Toyota Camry problems

The Toyota Camry (/ˈkæmri/; Japanese: トヨタ・カムリ Toyota Kamuri) is an automobile sold internationally by the Japanese auto manufacturer Toyota since 1982, spanning multiple generations. Originally compact in size (narrow-body), the Camry has grown since the 1990s to fit the mid-size classification (wide-body)—although the two widths co-existed in that decade. Since the release of the wide-bodied versions, Camry has been extolled by Toyota as the firm's second "world car" after the Corolla. As of 2022, the Camry is positioned above the Corolla and below the Avalon or Crown in several markets.
In Japan, Camry was once exclusive to Toyota Corolla Store retail dealerships. Narrow-body cars also spawned a rebadged sibling in Japan, the Toyota Vista (トヨタ・ビスタ)—also introduced in 1982 and sold at Toyota Vista Store locations. Diesel fuel versions have previously retailed at Toyota Diesel Store. The Vista Ardeo was a wagon version of the Vista V50.
Etymology
The name "Camry" derives from the Japanese word kanmuri (ja:冠, かんむり), meaning "crown". This follows Toyota's naming tradition of using the crown name for primary models starting with the Toyota Crown (1955), continuing with the Toyota Corona (1957) and Corolla (1966); the Latin words for "crown" and "small crown", respectively. Maintaining this theme was the Toyota Tiara (1960) named after the "tiara" form of crown. The Atara trim level name used on the Camry in Australia since 2011 means "crown" in Hebrew. The rebadged Camry variant for Japan, the Toyota Scepter (1991)—took its name from "scepter", a royal accessory to a crown.

Common Toyota Camry problems
The Toyota Camry is known for its reliability and durability, but like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues based on the search results:
- AC and heater issues: A musty smell coming from the air conditioning vents has been reported by owners of 2012, 2013, and 2014 Camry models. This issue is caused by condensation buildup inside the A/C system, which leads to mold growth. A class-action lawsuit was even filed against Toyota due to the prevalence of this problem.
- Malfunctioning door locks: The door locks of the 2011 Camry have been reported to malfunction at around 85,000 miles. This safety issue is often resolved by replacing the door lock actuator.
- Brake problems: Brake issues have been reported in various Camry models. These problems can range from brakes not responding well, leading to collisions, to the brake light coming on randomly. Regular maintenance and inspection of the braking system can help prevent these issues.
- Excessive oil consumption: This issue is particularly prevalent in 2007, 2008, and 2009 Camry models. It is a result of poorly designed piston rings, which can lead to engine failure if oil levels aren't monitored closely. Regularly checking the oil level is the best solution to prevent engine failure.
- Leaking head gasket: This problem affects 2002-2006 Camry models and can cause smoke to come out from under the hood, dirty coolant, white smoke from the tailpipe, and engine failure. Regular inspection and maintenance of the coolant and oil can help prevent this issue.
- Power window failure: Power window failure is a common issue in 7th generation Toyota Camry vehicles. This problem can be caused by off-track windows, bad fuses, or malfunctioning window regulators.
- Melting dashboard: The main symptom of this issue is a sticky dashboard, which can create a dangerous glare from the sun. Toyota extended dashboard warranty coverage for melted dashboards in January 2015, but it lasted only until May 31, 2017. A dashboard cover can be a solution for this problem.
- Starter failure: This is a common problem in various Camry models, and it can be caused by a dead battery, a potential alternator problem, or a starter issue. Replacing the battery, alternator, or starter is usually the solution to this problem.
- Deteriorating rear speaker covers: This issue affects 2002-2006 Camry models and is caused by the plastic Toyota used to manufacture the rear speaker covers cracking or crumbling after prolonged exposure to the elements. Replacing the speaker covers as soon as possible is the best solution to prevent this problem.
While these problems can be frustrating for Camry owners, it's important to note that Toyota is known for its reliability and durability. Regular maintenance and inspection can help prevent many of these issues, and Toyota dealerships and repair centers are equipped to diagnose and repair any problems that may arise.

Toyota Camry 2007
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-07
- Date Complaint: 2024-11-07
- VIN: 4T4BE46K77R
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: Because of the sticky dash’s glare on the driver side windshield, I could not see the car ahead of me at all. I almost hit a car that was in front of me not because he had braked because we were both still in motion but the glare was directly in my line of vision. I just happened to put my hand up over the glare and saw there was actually a silver car in front of me and I was way to close to it. No accident occurred but it almost did and certainly could have injured me and/or my passengers. This has to be fixed! That scared me to death! I truly had no idea there was a car in front of me as I could NOT see it from the dash’s glare off the windshield.

- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-26
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-26
- VIN: 4T1BE46K97U
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: The problem that I have is the same as the one I years ago. There was a recall on 2007 Toyota Camrys for oil consumption. At the time I waws never getting the maintenance indicator because the engine would run low on oil before I needed an oil change. I am having the same problem again. The car is not leaking oil. It's consuming oil. I now must drive around with extra oil in the trunk in case the oil is low. I have been a Toyota owner since 1986. I have always thought of Toyota as being one of the most reliable cars on the road. I have taken the car to the dealer near me (Toyota South Morrow, GA). Of course they do not want to further investigate this problem further. But I am sure is the problem. My mechanic also agrees that this is likely the problem.? What component failed? Engine / Oil How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? The car could stop at any time with engine failure, blown gaskets, etc. The problem is easily reproduce every oil change. Toyota Dealership has reviewed the problem. Now the consumption is so bad I have to check the oil every 2 weeks. The low oil indicator does not come on. Is there another recall possible if this first recall doesn't fix the problem permanently.

Toyota Camry 2016
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-29
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-20
- Number Of Injuries: 1
- VIN: 4T1BF1FKXGU
- Components: STRUCTURE,LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES
- Summary: While loading groceries in my trunk, the torsion bar sheared off and broke (the hook part). It fell hard on my shoulder (fortunately not my neck or head). I have never seen steel actually break rather than bend. I tried to fix it but could not. Trunk is heavy and unstable (falls easily), as is part of car in back. Went to Toyota dealer and found out no recall, and "iffy" fix. They wanted $488.50 to try and fix. My body shop estimated $164. and purchased correct Toyota parts, followed their instructions. The bars only held for a few minutes, then they failed to hold up the trunk again. I was almost injured again with this failure, but managed to catch it in time. They refunded me $100. since they said there was no more "play" to work with. Went on social media only to find that many Toyota Camry 2016 and 2015s had torsion bar failures, with no recall. Some said that they spent over $1000. trying to fix it, but never could, no matter what dealership or body shop repaired it. Others gave up and sold it. It is not something that I can "live with". the trunk is heavy to life and unstable. Have to hold it while trying to put things in trunk. I have had 6 Toyotas in my life and 3 cars with Auto Nation, but have never had the lack of integrity, follow-through and non-solutions that I have experienced with the purchase of this car. Unlike others, I can't afford to sell/replace my car at this time, and can't live with it as is. I truly love my car, but do not feel safe using it and am totally frustrated. All I want is for Toyota and/or its mfr.) to own up to the design flaw and either fix or replace it. Note: I have photos of broken part, failure, and estimates, but couldn't get them to download onto your form. (It just kept deleting the form and having me start over). Please advise if I can send another way.

- Date Complaint: 2024-10-17
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 4T1K61AK4PU
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,LANE DEPARTURE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: The smart stop system, the vehicle stability control system, the electrical power steering system, the blind spot monitoring system, the secondary collision brake system, and the lane keeping assistance all malfunctioned while traveling home one night. My made a really loud continuous beeping sound as I was driving the vehicle sensed it was departing its lane and the lane keeping assistance over steered left. This caused my vehicle to scrape the curb, causing cosmetic damage, mess up the wheel alignment , and crack front drivers side rim, because I physically tried to turn away to prevent any impact with the curb. I also had this vehicle stop in the middle of the road MULTIPLE TIMES DETECTING an object or obstruction was in the road when nothing was there! This almost caused rear end collisions multiple times when it happened. I actually turned this feature down to the lowest possible setting to prevent it from happening. If you are asking is it available for inspection by me it is not. This vehicle had an extremely high monthly car note. Once I took it to the dealership for inspection, they were not willing to honor my new car warranty. Even though I brought this car with 10 miles on the odometer. The dealership was negligent, & as was Toyota corporation. when I called to have it inspected and got their upper management involved. They sent out a 3rd party inspector to look at my car at Jerry’s Toyota inc, located in Baltimore Maryland where it was purchased. Upon inspection nothing was said or noted at all about any of the malfunctioned systems to my vehicle, they used it having exterior damage from impacting the curb to say, the problem was my fault & to get insurance to fix it because it’s not their problem. Yes my safety and other safety were put at risk because of this vehicle. Yes it was inspected by a 3rd party inspector Toyota hired to look at the vehicle. It has since been repossessed because I could not drive it safely. No their were no warning lamps prior

Vehicle year: 2013
We purchased our newest Camry seven months ago and have already driven it 13,000 miles. This is our third Camry, so it's safe to say we're big fans. The 2013 V6 is incredibly fast, and the 2013 XLE feels lighter and more nimble than our 2002 XLE. The gas mileage is great, and the car is definitely comfortable. The steering is quicker than prior models, and this model feels better balanced than previous year models too. Overall, it's a fantastic car that provides comfort and safety while getting you from Point A to Point B in style. The only downside is that Toyota should make it easier and less expensive to update the maps. We've had no issues with the car even after driving over 90K miles. It just keeps running without any problems. We're now over 94K miles and still going strong!

Vehicle year: 2014
My first car was a new bare bones Civic. It set the standard for what I expect from a new car. Fast forward to 2014 and I chose the Camry SE V6 as it checked all the boxes for a larger, comfortable, more powerful car. The Camry is a master of most trades and is, for the most part, a no-brainer. However, in less than a year, I have found a few things that make me question Toyota's quality. Despite this, the Camry is still the perfect interstate cruiser and an overall good value, checking all the boxes. If you want a spacious 4-door, efficient, and quick ride with a sporty flair in your daily driver, the Camry is a great option and easily matches the V6 Accord in that quest.

Vehicle year: 1998
This car may not be the most sporty or visually appealing, but I have to give Toyota all the credit for making a reliable and strong running vehicle! In fact, this Camry has been the BEST car I've ever owned. I purchased it with 235k miles on it, so it was already well-broken in. Now, with 284k miles on it, it has never failed me. Other than regular maintenance like changing the timing belt, tires, brakes, and oil, I have had no major issues with this car. Everything still works perfectly. It does consume a little oil, but considering the car is almost 18 years old, that's not surprising. I would highly recommend anyone to buy a Camry. The build quality is amazing, and everything is still intact inside and out. It is also very comfortable to drive on long trips. I have driven this car from Ohio to Indiana, Michigan, West Virginia, Kentucky, and even all the way to Arizona with absolutely no problems! I hope this car lasts for a long time to come, even with almost 300k miles on it. I will definitely be buying another Camry for my next car. Toyota has me sold, especially compared to other brands of cars that consistently have problems and don't even last to see the day of 200,000+ miles.

Vehicle year: 1997
I absolutely adore this car! It has clocked over 225,000 miles and yet it still runs like a dream. The paint is still shiny and looks as good as new. I have been the proud owner of this car for 3 years now and all I have done is regular maintenance. It averages about 15,000 miles a year and has never let me down. I often see other Camrys from this era missing hubcaps or being dirty, which is a shame. Hubcaps are inexpensive and can really make a difference in the car's appearance. Nevertheless, I still love my car and plan to drive it until either it dies or I do. :)

Vehicle year: 1999
From 2005 to ~2011, I drove a 1991 Toyota pickup. After that, I was given my grandmother's 1999 Toyota Camry, which only had around 43k miles on the odometer. Since then, I've put around 30k on the odometer, driving to and from work/school in Connecticut, as well as driving from South Carolina to CT and back 5 times. Despite being 3 years old, the engine air filter is miraculously still clean and in good shape. The only problem I've been having lately is the motors for both the front driver and passenger windows dying, although that's likely due to age. All in all, it's a great car, and I'm confident it will last for years to come.

Vehicle year: 2008
The Toyota Camry is a reliable car for everyday transportation. It is quiet, comfortable and dependable. Although it may not be the most exciting car to drive, it gets the job done. It is important to note that some parts, such as the struts, may need to be replaced around 40k and there may be small leaks. However, with proper maintenance, the Camry can still run great even at high mileage. It is unfortunate that the author experienced some issues with their Camry, but it is important to remember that every car is different and may have its own unique issues. Overall, the Camry is a great car and has been a popular choice for many drivers.

It seems that there may be some issues with the acceleration of this particular Toyota model. Some drivers have reported hesitation when pressing on the gas while moving, which can be dangerous. Additionally, there have been reports of sluggish acceleration. It's important to prioritize safety on the road, so it's worth considering these concerns before making a purchase. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

I really like the appearance of my new Camry, but I have noticed that the ride can be a bit bumpy and there is a lot of roll and pitch. I feel every bump in the road. Although the test drive models seemed fine, the one I purchased does not ride as well. Additionally, I find the headrest to be leaning too far forward, making it difficult to sit in a comfortable ergonomic position without having my head pushed forward. It would be great if all car manufacturers could incorporate repositionable headrests, similar to the 1994 Camry. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

I've been a Toyota Camry owner for over 16 years. Recently, I upgraded to the 2016 model. While I love the exterior styling, I have some concerns about the interior. The seats are not as comfortable as I had hoped and cause my leg to go numb while driving. Additionally, the car tends to bounce on the highway, which can be a bit unsettling. I brought my car back to the dealer several times, but was told that it was a common issue. I added some weight to the trunk, which helped, but you can still feel every bump in the road. The infotainment system could use some improvement, as the Bluetooth works intermittently and the voice commands don't work at all. However, the car is still reliable and perfect for short commutes. I'm considering my options for long road trips, but overall, I'm still a loyal Toyota customer.

The Camrys produced between 1997 and 2002 had a design flaw that required more frequent oil changes than the manual suggests. While the manual recommends changing the oil between 5,000 and 7,500 miles, it is advisable to change it at 2,500 miles to prevent oil gelling. This is because the Camry runs at a higher temperature to achieve good fuel economy, which can cause the oil to lose its lubrication ability faster. If you search for 'Toyota oil gelling' on Google, you can learn more about this issue. Overall, the Camry is a good vehicle, but it is important to change the oil more frequently for models produced between 1997 and 2002.
