Toyota Camry problems

The Toyota Camry (/ˈkæmri/; Japanese: トヨタ・カムリ Toyota Kamuri) is an automobile sold internationally by the Japanese auto manufacturer Toyota since 1982, spanning multiple generations. Originally compact in size (narrow-body), the Camry has grown since the 1990s to fit the mid-size classification (wide-body)—although the two widths co-existed in that decade. Since the release of the wide-bodied versions, Camry has been extolled by Toyota as the firm's second "world car" after the Corolla. As of 2022, the Camry is positioned above the Corolla and below the Avalon or Crown in several markets.
In Japan, Camry was once exclusive to Toyota Corolla Store retail dealerships. Narrow-body cars also spawned a rebadged sibling in Japan, the Toyota Vista (トヨタ・ビスタ)—also introduced in 1982 and sold at Toyota Vista Store locations. Diesel fuel versions have previously retailed at Toyota Diesel Store. The Vista Ardeo was a wagon version of the Vista V50.
Etymology
The name "Camry" derives from the Japanese word kanmuri (ja:冠, かんむり), meaning "crown". This follows Toyota's naming tradition of using the crown name for primary models starting with the Toyota Crown (1955), continuing with the Toyota Corona (1957) and Corolla (1966); the Latin words for "crown" and "small crown", respectively. Maintaining this theme was the Toyota Tiara (1960) named after the "tiara" form of crown. The Atara trim level name used on the Camry in Australia since 2011 means "crown" in Hebrew. The rebadged Camry variant for Japan, the Toyota Scepter (1991)—took its name from "scepter", a royal accessory to a crown.

Common Toyota Camry problems
The Toyota Camry is known for its reliability and durability, but like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues based on the search results:
- AC and heater issues: A musty smell coming from the air conditioning vents has been reported by owners of 2012, 2013, and 2014 Camry models. This issue is caused by condensation buildup inside the A/C system, which leads to mold growth. A class-action lawsuit was even filed against Toyota due to the prevalence of this problem.
- Malfunctioning door locks: The door locks of the 2011 Camry have been reported to malfunction at around 85,000 miles. This safety issue is often resolved by replacing the door lock actuator.
- Brake problems: Brake issues have been reported in various Camry models. These problems can range from brakes not responding well, leading to collisions, to the brake light coming on randomly. Regular maintenance and inspection of the braking system can help prevent these issues.
- Excessive oil consumption: This issue is particularly prevalent in 2007, 2008, and 2009 Camry models. It is a result of poorly designed piston rings, which can lead to engine failure if oil levels aren't monitored closely. Regularly checking the oil level is the best solution to prevent engine failure.
- Leaking head gasket: This problem affects 2002-2006 Camry models and can cause smoke to come out from under the hood, dirty coolant, white smoke from the tailpipe, and engine failure. Regular inspection and maintenance of the coolant and oil can help prevent this issue.
- Power window failure: Power window failure is a common issue in 7th generation Toyota Camry vehicles. This problem can be caused by off-track windows, bad fuses, or malfunctioning window regulators.
- Melting dashboard: The main symptom of this issue is a sticky dashboard, which can create a dangerous glare from the sun. Toyota extended dashboard warranty coverage for melted dashboards in January 2015, but it lasted only until May 31, 2017. A dashboard cover can be a solution for this problem.
- Starter failure: This is a common problem in various Camry models, and it can be caused by a dead battery, a potential alternator problem, or a starter issue. Replacing the battery, alternator, or starter is usually the solution to this problem.
- Deteriorating rear speaker covers: This issue affects 2002-2006 Camry models and is caused by the plastic Toyota used to manufacture the rear speaker covers cracking or crumbling after prolonged exposure to the elements. Replacing the speaker covers as soon as possible is the best solution to prevent this problem.
While these problems can be frustrating for Camry owners, it's important to note that Toyota is known for its reliability and durability. Regular maintenance and inspection can help prevent many of these issues, and Toyota dealerships and repair centers are equipped to diagnose and repair any problems that may arise.

Toyota Camry 2007
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-07
- Date Complaint: 2024-11-07
- VIN: 4T4BE46K77R
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: Because of the sticky dash’s glare on the driver side windshield, I could not see the car ahead of me at all. I almost hit a car that was in front of me not because he had braked because we were both still in motion but the glare was directly in my line of vision. I just happened to put my hand up over the glare and saw there was actually a silver car in front of me and I was way to close to it. No accident occurred but it almost did and certainly could have injured me and/or my passengers. This has to be fixed! That scared me to death! I truly had no idea there was a car in front of me as I could NOT see it from the dash’s glare off the windshield.

- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-26
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-26
- VIN: 4T1BE46K97U
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: The problem that I have is the same as the one I years ago. There was a recall on 2007 Toyota Camrys for oil consumption. At the time I waws never getting the maintenance indicator because the engine would run low on oil before I needed an oil change. I am having the same problem again. The car is not leaking oil. It's consuming oil. I now must drive around with extra oil in the trunk in case the oil is low. I have been a Toyota owner since 1986. I have always thought of Toyota as being one of the most reliable cars on the road. I have taken the car to the dealer near me (Toyota South Morrow, GA). Of course they do not want to further investigate this problem further. But I am sure is the problem. My mechanic also agrees that this is likely the problem.? What component failed? Engine / Oil How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? The car could stop at any time with engine failure, blown gaskets, etc. The problem is easily reproduce every oil change. Toyota Dealership has reviewed the problem. Now the consumption is so bad I have to check the oil every 2 weeks. The low oil indicator does not come on. Is there another recall possible if this first recall doesn't fix the problem permanently.

Toyota Camry 2016
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-29
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-20
- Number Of Injuries: 1
- VIN: 4T1BF1FKXGU
- Components: STRUCTURE,LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES
- Summary: While loading groceries in my trunk, the torsion bar sheared off and broke (the hook part). It fell hard on my shoulder (fortunately not my neck or head). I have never seen steel actually break rather than bend. I tried to fix it but could not. Trunk is heavy and unstable (falls easily), as is part of car in back. Went to Toyota dealer and found out no recall, and "iffy" fix. They wanted $488.50 to try and fix. My body shop estimated $164. and purchased correct Toyota parts, followed their instructions. The bars only held for a few minutes, then they failed to hold up the trunk again. I was almost injured again with this failure, but managed to catch it in time. They refunded me $100. since they said there was no more "play" to work with. Went on social media only to find that many Toyota Camry 2016 and 2015s had torsion bar failures, with no recall. Some said that they spent over $1000. trying to fix it, but never could, no matter what dealership or body shop repaired it. Others gave up and sold it. It is not something that I can "live with". the trunk is heavy to life and unstable. Have to hold it while trying to put things in trunk. I have had 6 Toyotas in my life and 3 cars with Auto Nation, but have never had the lack of integrity, follow-through and non-solutions that I have experienced with the purchase of this car. Unlike others, I can't afford to sell/replace my car at this time, and can't live with it as is. I truly love my car, but do not feel safe using it and am totally frustrated. All I want is for Toyota and/or its mfr.) to own up to the design flaw and either fix or replace it. Note: I have photos of broken part, failure, and estimates, but couldn't get them to download onto your form. (It just kept deleting the form and having me start over). Please advise if I can send another way.

- Date Complaint: 2024-10-17
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 4T1K61AK4PU
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,LANE DEPARTURE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: The smart stop system, the vehicle stability control system, the electrical power steering system, the blind spot monitoring system, the secondary collision brake system, and the lane keeping assistance all malfunctioned while traveling home one night. My made a really loud continuous beeping sound as I was driving the vehicle sensed it was departing its lane and the lane keeping assistance over steered left. This caused my vehicle to scrape the curb, causing cosmetic damage, mess up the wheel alignment , and crack front drivers side rim, because I physically tried to turn away to prevent any impact with the curb. I also had this vehicle stop in the middle of the road MULTIPLE TIMES DETECTING an object or obstruction was in the road when nothing was there! This almost caused rear end collisions multiple times when it happened. I actually turned this feature down to the lowest possible setting to prevent it from happening. If you are asking is it available for inspection by me it is not. This vehicle had an extremely high monthly car note. Once I took it to the dealership for inspection, they were not willing to honor my new car warranty. Even though I brought this car with 10 miles on the odometer. The dealership was negligent, & as was Toyota corporation. when I called to have it inspected and got their upper management involved. They sent out a 3rd party inspector to look at my car at Jerry’s Toyota inc, located in Baltimore Maryland where it was purchased. Upon inspection nothing was said or noted at all about any of the malfunctioned systems to my vehicle, they used it having exterior damage from impacting the curb to say, the problem was my fault & to get insurance to fix it because it’s not their problem. Yes my safety and other safety were put at risk because of this vehicle. Yes it was inspected by a 3rd party inspector Toyota hired to look at the vehicle. It has since been repossessed because I could not drive it safely. No their were no warning lamps prior

Vehicle year: 2006
I test drove both the Chevy Impala and the Ford 500, but despite the employee pricing gimmicks, I ultimately found the Camry V6 LE to be the better car. I was able to easily obtain below-invoice quotes from the big three US dealers, and Toyota even had a year-end rebate which I was able to take advantage of. I paid just around $23K for a brand new Lunar Silver Camry with polished alloy wheels and a comfortable grey cloth interior. It looks great in any setting, whether it's in the company parking lot or at the country club. I haven't had the chance to give it full throttle yet since it's still in brake-in mode, but the 4-wheel disc brakes are a nice feature. The Bridgestone tires do tend to pick up road noise, but overall I'm very happy with my purchase. After shopping around, I'm confident that I made the right choice with Toyota.

Vehicle year: 2006
I've owned three 4 cylinder Camrys - an '89, '98, and now a 2006. All of them have been incredibly reliable, with the previous ones reaching 200k miles with ease. What sets the 2006 apart is that it has a timing chain instead of a belt, which is a great feature for those of us who put a lot of miles on our Camrys. This car is simply a joy to own - it's fun, safe, and reliable. Plus, the spark plugs are platinum, so you don't have to change them unless you're experiencing performance issues. In fact, when I traded in my '98 Camry, it still had the original plugs and wires and ran as smooth as ice. As someone who needs a reliable vehicle for commuting to work, I can confidently say that this car fits the bill. Just make sure to keep the fluids changed and fresh!

Vehicle year: 2004
I'm not the best driver out there, but I'm definitely not the worst either. My Toyota has been through a lot, surviving a collision during harsh winter conditions and still managing to last on the highway for an hour and a half, five days a week. Before my accident, I was able to drive it all the way from Detroit, MI to St. Louis, MO, up to Chicago, IL, and back to Detroit within a weekend. The best part? I only paid $140 in gas for the whole trip! Sure, the oil tank has a slight leak, but my trusty Toyota still managed to run on only a quarter of a tank of black oil for a couple of weeks before I finally had my mechanic change the oil. TL;DR, if you're looking for a reliable car without all the flashiness, or if you're just looking for a first car for your teenager, the 2004 Toyota Camry is definitely the way to go!

Vehicle year: 2018
I recently purchased a 2018 Toyota Camry XSE V6 after considering other luxury car brands such as Lexus ES, Audi S, and BMW 4. I must say, the pictures do not do this car justice. In person, it is a stunningly beautiful vehicle that has caught the attention of many passersby. People are often incredulous when I tell them it's a Camry. The Cockpit Red interior is a real standout feature that complements the car's exterior perfectly. As a larger person at 6'/280#, I find the car to be very comfortable, even more so than my previous 2008 Toyota Avalon XLS. The technology layout and functionality are impressive, although the interior storage space could be a bit more generous. The engine provides just enough power to get you where you need to go without being too fuel-hungry. The 8-speed transmission takes some getting used to, but the handling and ride quality are excellent, as expected with 19

Vehicle year: 1995
This car was fantastic! My parents bought it brand new in 1995 and it served us well. It had a powerful V6 engine and great fuel economy, achieving 22 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. As with any car, it needed some maintenance as it aged, such as a new timing belt every 60,000 miles and occasional repairs like the head gasket and axle boots. However, I found the repairs to be reasonable given its age. It was a very comfortable car to drive with excellent visibility. I eventually sold it at 189,600 miles, but it was still running perfectly. I could have easily kept it for longer!

Vehicle year: 2024
I recently purchased a 23 Camry SE from Toyota of Romeoville. While driving, I noticed a humming noise coming from the back and there seems to be something rattling near the passenger seat belt. Additionally, the car navigation system cost extra to install. The interior is not as high quality as I expected, and the leather on the seats is not very durable. However, the car is great on gas. Although it is a bit slow on first gear, the 2.5L 4 cylinder engine is fuel-efficient. While I have decided to trade this car in for a Honda Accord, I must say that older Toyota models were better. The new models may look good, but they do not meet my expectations. The car can be quite loud while driving, and there is no noise cancellation feature. The dealer may say that this is normal, but I disagree.

The transmission hesitation issue is a common problem that many Camry owners have experienced. It is important to note that this issue does not affect the safety of the vehicle. The Camry is a reliable car that has been trusted by millions of drivers for decades. While the tires may be noisy on rough roads, they are designed to provide excellent performance and handling. The front end design is sleek and modern, but it is important to take precautions to prevent paint chips. Overall, the Camry is a great choice for anyone looking for a dependable and stylish vehicle.

I recently purchased this car and unfortunately experienced some issues with the ABS, traction control and brake lights coming on. I took it to the dealership and although the chief technician suggested turning the rotor, I insisted on a replacement along with new pads and brake control module. After speaking with the service manager, they agreed to replace all 4 rotors and pads on all 4 corners. However, the brake warning lights returned shortly after the repair. I plan to return to the dealership to address the issue, and I suspect that the brake control module may be the culprit. As someone who used to work as a Cadillac technician at a dealership, I have a good understanding of how these things work. In the end, I decided to trade the car in due to poor support and purchased a new 2017 model. While I have had some issues getting in and out of the driver's side, I am confident that I will be able to find a solution. I do wish that the headlights were brighter, as they are not as effective as the HID lights in my previous vehicle. Perhaps Toyota could consider upgrading to LED lights in future models.

If you don't drive a distance daily you will have problems with a dead battery. I have had my battery replaced twice and I purchased my car in 2014 brand new. Apparently because I work very close to home my battery gets drained and when the weather turns cold my battery dies. I was told because of the electronics the car needs to run more to keep the battery charged. I had an Avalon for many years and never had this issue because it didn't have all the sophisticated electronics. So the solution drive around more to avoid this problem. Crazy!!

I've had several Toyota's in the past, but unfortunately, I had to trade in my new 2020 Camry back to the dealership with less than 500 miles on it due to a battery drain issue that Toyota has yet to acknowledge. The battery went completely dead three times, and I had to jump-start it to get to the dealership. Despite having it checked, the dealership found nothing wrong with the battery. While the 2020 Camry is an excellent vehicle in terms of styling, ride, and function, this battery drain issue is a major problem that affects the vehicle's reliability, which is something Toyota is known for.
