Toyota Camry problems

The Toyota Camry (/ˈkæmri/; Japanese: トヨタ・カムリ Toyota Kamuri) is an automobile sold internationally by the Japanese auto manufacturer Toyota since 1982, spanning multiple generations. Originally compact in size (narrow-body), the Camry has grown since the 1990s to fit the mid-size classification (wide-body)—although the two widths co-existed in that decade. Since the release of the wide-bodied versions, Camry has been extolled by Toyota as the firm's second "world car" after the Corolla. As of 2022, the Camry is positioned above the Corolla and below the Avalon or Crown in several markets.

In Japan, Camry was once exclusive to Toyota Corolla Store retail dealerships. Narrow-body cars also spawned a rebadged sibling in Japan, the Toyota Vista (トヨタ・ビスタ)—also introduced in 1982 and sold at Toyota Vista Store locations. Diesel fuel versions have previously retailed at Toyota Diesel Store. The Vista Ardeo was a wagon version of the Vista V50.

Etymology

The name "Camry" derives from the Japanese word kanmuri (ja:冠, かんむり), meaning "crown". This follows Toyota's naming tradition of using the crown name for primary models starting with the Toyota Crown (1955), continuing with the Toyota Corona (1957) and Corolla (1966); the Latin words for "crown" and "small crown", respectively. Maintaining this theme was the Toyota Tiara (1960) named after the "tiara" form of crown. The Atara trim level name used on the Camry in Australia since 2011 means "crown" in Hebrew. The rebadged Camry variant for Japan, the Toyota Scepter (1991)—took its name from "scepter", a royal accessory to a crown.

Common Toyota Camry problems

The Toyota Camry is known for its reliability and durability, but like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues based on the search results:

  • AC and heater issues: A musty smell coming from the air conditioning vents has been reported by owners of 2012, 2013, and 2014 Camry models. This issue is caused by condensation buildup inside the A/C system, which leads to mold growth. A class-action lawsuit was even filed against Toyota due to the prevalence of this problem.
  • Malfunctioning door locks: The door locks of the 2011 Camry have been reported to malfunction at around 85,000 miles. This safety issue is often resolved by replacing the door lock actuator.
  • Brake problems: Brake issues have been reported in various Camry models. These problems can range from brakes not responding well, leading to collisions, to the brake light coming on randomly. Regular maintenance and inspection of the braking system can help prevent these issues.
  • Excessive oil consumption: This issue is particularly prevalent in 2007, 2008, and 2009 Camry models. It is a result of poorly designed piston rings, which can lead to engine failure if oil levels aren't monitored closely. Regularly checking the oil level is the best solution to prevent engine failure.
  • Leaking head gasket: This problem affects 2002-2006 Camry models and can cause smoke to come out from under the hood, dirty coolant, white smoke from the tailpipe, and engine failure. Regular inspection and maintenance of the coolant and oil can help prevent this issue.
  • Power window failure: Power window failure is a common issue in 7th generation Toyota Camry vehicles. This problem can be caused by off-track windows, bad fuses, or malfunctioning window regulators.
  • Melting dashboard: The main symptom of this issue is a sticky dashboard, which can create a dangerous glare from the sun. Toyota extended dashboard warranty coverage for melted dashboards in January 2015, but it lasted only until May 31, 2017. A dashboard cover can be a solution for this problem.
  • Starter failure: This is a common problem in various Camry models, and it can be caused by a dead battery, a potential alternator problem, or a starter issue. Replacing the battery, alternator, or starter is usually the solution to this problem.
  • Deteriorating rear speaker covers: This issue affects 2002-2006 Camry models and is caused by the plastic Toyota used to manufacture the rear speaker covers cracking or crumbling after prolonged exposure to the elements. Replacing the speaker covers as soon as possible is the best solution to prevent this problem.

While these problems can be frustrating for Camry owners, it's important to note that Toyota is known for its reliability and durability. Regular maintenance and inspection can help prevent many of these issues, and Toyota dealerships and repair centers are equipped to diagnose and repair any problems that may arise.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-07
  • Date Complaint: 2024-11-07
  • VIN: 4T4BE46K77R
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: Because of the sticky dash’s glare on the driver side windshield, I could not see the car ahead of me at all. I almost hit a car that was in front of me not because he had braked because we were both still in motion but the glare was directly in my line of vision. I just happened to put my hand up over the glare and saw there was actually a silver car in front of me and I was way to close to it. No accident occurred but it almost did and certainly could have injured me and/or my passengers. This has to be fixed! That scared me to death! I truly had no idea there was a car in front of me as I could NOT see it from the dash’s glare off the windshield.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-26
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-26
  • VIN: 4T1BE46K97U
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: The problem that I have is the same as the one I years ago. There was a recall on 2007 Toyota Camrys for oil consumption. At the time I waws never getting the maintenance indicator because the engine would run low on oil before I needed an oil change. I am having the same problem again. The car is not leaking oil. It's consuming oil. I now must drive around with extra oil in the trunk in case the oil is low. I have been a Toyota owner since 1986. I have always thought of Toyota as being one of the most reliable cars on the road. I have taken the car to the dealer near me (Toyota South Morrow, GA). Of course they do not want to further investigate this problem further. But I am sure is the problem. My mechanic also agrees that this is likely the problem.? What component failed? Engine / Oil How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? The car could stop at any time with engine failure, blown gaskets, etc. The problem is easily reproduce every oil change. Toyota Dealership has reviewed the problem. Now the consumption is so bad I have to check the oil every 2 weeks. The low oil indicator does not come on. Is there another recall possible if this first recall doesn't fix the problem permanently.

Toyota Camry 2016
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-29
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-20
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • VIN: 4T1BF1FKXGU
  • Components: STRUCTURE,LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES
  • Summary: While loading groceries in my trunk, the torsion bar sheared off and broke (the hook part). It fell hard on my shoulder (fortunately not my neck or head). I have never seen steel actually break rather than bend. I tried to fix it but could not. Trunk is heavy and unstable (falls easily), as is part of car in back. Went to Toyota dealer and found out no recall, and "iffy" fix. They wanted $488.50 to try and fix. My body shop estimated $164. and purchased correct Toyota parts, followed their instructions. The bars only held for a few minutes, then they failed to hold up the trunk again. I was almost injured again with this failure, but managed to catch it in time. They refunded me $100. since they said there was no more "play" to work with. Went on social media only to find that many Toyota Camry 2016 and 2015s had torsion bar failures, with no recall. Some said that they spent over $1000. trying to fix it, but never could, no matter what dealership or body shop repaired it. Others gave up and sold it. It is not something that I can "live with". the trunk is heavy to life and unstable. Have to hold it while trying to put things in trunk. I have had 6 Toyotas in my life and 3 cars with Auto Nation, but have never had the lack of integrity, follow-through and non-solutions that I have experienced with the purchase of this car. Unlike others, I can't afford to sell/replace my car at this time, and can't live with it as is. I truly love my car, but do not feel safe using it and am totally frustrated. All I want is for Toyota and/or its mfr.) to own up to the design flaw and either fix or replace it. Note: I have photos of broken part, failure, and estimates, but couldn't get them to download onto your form. (It just kept deleting the form and having me start over). Please advise if I can send another way.

  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-17
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 4T1K61AK4PU
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,LANE DEPARTURE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: The smart stop system, the vehicle stability control system, the electrical power steering system, the blind spot monitoring system, the secondary collision brake system, and the lane keeping assistance all malfunctioned while traveling home one night. My made a really loud continuous beeping sound as I was driving the vehicle sensed it was departing its lane and the lane keeping assistance over steered left. This caused my vehicle to scrape the curb, causing cosmetic damage, mess up the wheel alignment , and crack front drivers side rim, because I physically tried to turn away to prevent any impact with the curb. I also had this vehicle stop in the middle of the road MULTIPLE TIMES DETECTING an object or obstruction was in the road when nothing was there! This almost caused rear end collisions multiple times when it happened. I actually turned this feature down to the lowest possible setting to prevent it from happening. If you are asking is it available for inspection by me it is not. This vehicle had an extremely high monthly car note. Once I took it to the dealership for inspection, they were not willing to honor my new car warranty. Even though I brought this car with 10 miles on the odometer. The dealership was negligent, & as was Toyota corporation. when I called to have it inspected and got their upper management involved. They sent out a 3rd party inspector to look at my car at Jerry’s Toyota inc, located in Baltimore Maryland where it was purchased. Upon inspection nothing was said or noted at all about any of the malfunctioned systems to my vehicle, they used it having exterior damage from impacting the curb to say, the problem was my fault & to get insurance to fix it because it’s not their problem. Yes my safety and other safety were put at risk because of this vehicle. Yes it was inspected by a 3rd party inspector Toyota hired to look at the vehicle. It has since been repossessed because I could not drive it safely. No their were no warning lamps prior

Latest negative Toyota Camry car reviews

  1. Jesus Dach 2025-03-29

    Vehicle year: 2007

The car's response time at speeds of 40 mph and above can be concerning, especially in situations where sudden acceleration is needed. It may take several attempts for the car to respond, which could potentially lead to severe injuries or even death. Despite this issue, the Camry is still a great car. The dealer attempted to recalibrate the ECU, engine, and transmission, but the improvement was negligible. Another dealer test drove an identical Camry and experienced the same hesitation in the transmission at speeds of 40 mph or higher.

I recently replaced my 2011 Camry LE with over 205,000 miles on it with a new 2018 Camry LE from Toyota of Slidell, LA. The dealership offered a great price and I was excited to get behind the wheel. Although it's a nice car, I've noticed a few things that bother me on a daily basis. One of my biggest concerns is the Entune 3.0 system and its interface with my Android device. Unfortunately, it requires me to uninstall and reload apps, un-pair and re-pair my device several times a month, and re-enter all of my data. In this day and age, phones and cars should interface with one another seamlessly. It's frustrating to have to hold my phone in my hand to make a call most days, especially with so many states having hands-free laws. Additionally, the Scout GPS system is not up to par. I have friends with KIAs whose in-car systems virtually duplicate their phone on their dashboard, and it works flawlessly. When I first paired my phone to the car, I was able to use the microphone button to speak to the car microphone and get Google to give me an answer through the car sound system. However, after getting a software update for the Entune 3.0 App, the microphone button now produces a high-pitched feedback squeal. Toyota Care informed me that earlier builds of the 2018 Camry fully supported Android and Google, but that they dropped their support in later builds. Regardless, the Entune 3.0 App and the vehicle interface with my Android device is not up to par. I hope that future versions of Entune will address these issues.A couple of other downsides - the passenger side glove box is too small and the center console storage compartment is too large and deep without storage segregation/shelving requiring that I use large plastic cups to organize its contents. Additionally, I have noticed that the headlights are too bright. Virtually every time I'm in the car at night on a two-lane road, someone flashes me indicating I have my brights on. I end up flashing my actual brights on to let them know that - no, those are my regular lights. When passing a car on the interstate, I've had them get in behind me and light me up with their brights as if to say

When my car was totaled, I started looking for another car. Since I've owned 5 other Camrys in the past (86, 90, 96, 2000, 2005), I didn't consider any other cars except for the Camry. However, I should have listened to my wife and bought a Rav4 or 4Runner. Unfortunately, this car has been nothing but a headache. I only drive around 5k miles per year, yet I've had to change the brakes and rotors at 25k, axle boots at 30k, 4 tires at 36k, and finally spent $2k on changing all the oxygen sensors and catalytic converter. Now, the steering column makes noise, the AC makes noise, and the car makes a clicking noise in turns. It's a shame that dealerships are not like what they used to be. Their mission is to sell cars cheaply but make tons of money on repairs. Unfortunately, this will be my last Camry, and I can't wait to get rid of it.

I really liked the car's appearance and enjoyed the test drive. However, I was disappointed with the Entune 3.0 system and regretted my purchase after only a week. In my opinion, it's important to have a phone paired to the car and test the technology before making a decision. I've heard that Toyota will be transitioning to CarPlay in their 2019 models, which is great news. I also heard that an upgrade to Apple CarPlay may be available for the 2018 models, but I'm not sure about the cost. Overall, I would recommend doing your research before making a purchase.

    Vehicle year: 2010

The 2010 Toyota Camry XLE is 10 years old but looks brand new on the inside and outside. It has lots of extra features, all of which work perfectly. With only 122,000 miles on it, and considering my wife and I are in our 70s and 80s respectively, this car will probably outlive us both. Additionally, it drives just fine.

  2. Darryl Mills 2025-03-29

Your car sounds amazing! It's great to hear that it has been so reliable and safe for you, even in a near head-on situation. With 345,000 miles on it, it's clear that your car has been a faithful companion through all of life's responsibilities.

Hi there! I'll be focusing on maintenance in this text. Just wanted to share some of my experiences with my car. At 76k miles, my O2 Sensor was on and I had to replace the Catalytic Converter. Luckily, it was covered by the company warranty, which normally lasts up to 80k miles for Catalytic Converters. The Toyota bill was around $2000. At 80k and 135k miles, I had to replace the front brake shoes and disc, which cost me around $250. At 139k miles, I had to replace the starter, which cost me $300. At 90k miles, I had a coolant tank leak, which cost me $200. I also had to replace all four tires at 70k and 125k miles, which cost me around $600. At 105k miles, I found out that both the front and back struts were leaking and needed to be replaced. The Toyota estimate for this was around $1600. At 100k miles, I noticed that the engine oil was leaking. Lastly, I had to replace the battery at 80k and 125k miles. Hope this helps!

    Vehicle year: 1990

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to let you know about a car that I have available. It's a white car with golden tan upholstery that I purchased back in May of 1990. It was a new 3000 mi Demo at the time. Since then, I've made sure to keep up with regular service every 3000 miles, so it's been well-maintained. It drives really nicely, too! I do want to mention that there are a few things to note. The cruise control works great, but the driver's window and the two lowest levels of the heater are the only things that work. Unfortunately, the AC fan isn't operating at the moment. Additionally, there is some rust on the car, especially on the right rear fender, and there are touches of rust on the front fenders as well as the left rear fender. Despite these things, I've used it daily for local driving and it's been a very dependable car. Let me know if you're interested!

All the people writing bad things about this car are out of their minds. For the money, you can't find a better car. I've owned 6 Accords and 2 Sonatas, and they don't compare to the Camry. It's a great car! My Camry now has 63,000 miles and hasn't had any issues. I only put Shell V-Power gas in it and use Sea Foam once a month. I change the oil every 5,000 miles.
