Toyota Camry problems

The Toyota Camry (/ˈkæmri/; Japanese: トヨタ・カムリ Toyota Kamuri) is an automobile sold internationally by the Japanese auto manufacturer Toyota since 1982, spanning multiple generations. Originally compact in size (narrow-body), the Camry has grown since the 1990s to fit the mid-size classification (wide-body)—although the two widths co-existed in that decade. Since the release of the wide-bodied versions, Camry has been extolled by Toyota as the firm's second "world car" after the Corolla. As of 2022, the Camry is positioned above the Corolla and below the Avalon or Crown in several markets.

In Japan, Camry was once exclusive to Toyota Corolla Store retail dealerships. Narrow-body cars also spawned a rebadged sibling in Japan, the Toyota Vista (トヨタ・ビスタ)—also introduced in 1982 and sold at Toyota Vista Store locations. Diesel fuel versions have previously retailed at Toyota Diesel Store. The Vista Ardeo was a wagon version of the Vista V50.

Etymology

The name "Camry" derives from the Japanese word kanmuri (ja:冠, かんむり), meaning "crown". This follows Toyota's naming tradition of using the crown name for primary models starting with the Toyota Crown (1955), continuing with the Toyota Corona (1957) and Corolla (1966); the Latin words for "crown" and "small crown", respectively. Maintaining this theme was the Toyota Tiara (1960) named after the "tiara" form of crown. The Atara trim level name used on the Camry in Australia since 2011 means "crown" in Hebrew. The rebadged Camry variant for Japan, the Toyota Scepter (1991)—took its name from "scepter", a royal accessory to a crown.

Common Toyota Camry problems

The Toyota Camry is known for its reliability and durability, but like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues based on the search results:

  • AC and heater issues: A musty smell coming from the air conditioning vents has been reported by owners of 2012, 2013, and 2014 Camry models. This issue is caused by condensation buildup inside the A/C system, which leads to mold growth. A class-action lawsuit was even filed against Toyota due to the prevalence of this problem.
  • Malfunctioning door locks: The door locks of the 2011 Camry have been reported to malfunction at around 85,000 miles. This safety issue is often resolved by replacing the door lock actuator.
  • Brake problems: Brake issues have been reported in various Camry models. These problems can range from brakes not responding well, leading to collisions, to the brake light coming on randomly. Regular maintenance and inspection of the braking system can help prevent these issues.
  • Excessive oil consumption: This issue is particularly prevalent in 2007, 2008, and 2009 Camry models. It is a result of poorly designed piston rings, which can lead to engine failure if oil levels aren't monitored closely. Regularly checking the oil level is the best solution to prevent engine failure.
  • Leaking head gasket: This problem affects 2002-2006 Camry models and can cause smoke to come out from under the hood, dirty coolant, white smoke from the tailpipe, and engine failure. Regular inspection and maintenance of the coolant and oil can help prevent this issue.
  • Power window failure: Power window failure is a common issue in 7th generation Toyota Camry vehicles. This problem can be caused by off-track windows, bad fuses, or malfunctioning window regulators.
  • Melting dashboard: The main symptom of this issue is a sticky dashboard, which can create a dangerous glare from the sun. Toyota extended dashboard warranty coverage for melted dashboards in January 2015, but it lasted only until May 31, 2017. A dashboard cover can be a solution for this problem.
  • Starter failure: This is a common problem in various Camry models, and it can be caused by a dead battery, a potential alternator problem, or a starter issue. Replacing the battery, alternator, or starter is usually the solution to this problem.
  • Deteriorating rear speaker covers: This issue affects 2002-2006 Camry models and is caused by the plastic Toyota used to manufacture the rear speaker covers cracking or crumbling after prolonged exposure to the elements. Replacing the speaker covers as soon as possible is the best solution to prevent this problem.

While these problems can be frustrating for Camry owners, it's important to note that Toyota is known for its reliability and durability. Regular maintenance and inspection can help prevent many of these issues, and Toyota dealerships and repair centers are equipped to diagnose and repair any problems that may arise.

Toyota Camry 2007
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-07
  • Date Complaint: 2024-11-07
  • VIN: 4T4BE46K77R
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: Because of the sticky dash’s glare on the driver side windshield, I could not see the car ahead of me at all. I almost hit a car that was in front of me not because he had braked because we were both still in motion but the glare was directly in my line of vision. I just happened to put my hand up over the glare and saw there was actually a silver car in front of me and I was way to close to it. No accident occurred but it almost did and certainly could have injured me and/or my passengers. This has to be fixed! That scared me to death! I truly had no idea there was a car in front of me as I could NOT see it from the dash’s glare off the windshield.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-26
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-26
  • VIN: 4T1BE46K97U
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: The problem that I have is the same as the one I years ago. There was a recall on 2007 Toyota Camrys for oil consumption. At the time I waws never getting the maintenance indicator because the engine would run low on oil before I needed an oil change. I am having the same problem again. The car is not leaking oil. It's consuming oil. I now must drive around with extra oil in the trunk in case the oil is low. I have been a Toyota owner since 1986. I have always thought of Toyota as being one of the most reliable cars on the road. I have taken the car to the dealer near me (Toyota South Morrow, GA). Of course they do not want to further investigate this problem further. But I am sure is the problem. My mechanic also agrees that this is likely the problem.? What component failed? Engine / Oil How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? The car could stop at any time with engine failure, blown gaskets, etc. The problem is easily reproduce every oil change. Toyota Dealership has reviewed the problem. Now the consumption is so bad I have to check the oil every 2 weeks. The low oil indicator does not come on. Is there another recall possible if this first recall doesn't fix the problem permanently.

Toyota Camry 2016
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-29
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-20
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • VIN: 4T1BF1FKXGU
  • Components: STRUCTURE,LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES
  • Summary: While loading groceries in my trunk, the torsion bar sheared off and broke (the hook part). It fell hard on my shoulder (fortunately not my neck or head). I have never seen steel actually break rather than bend. I tried to fix it but could not. Trunk is heavy and unstable (falls easily), as is part of car in back. Went to Toyota dealer and found out no recall, and "iffy" fix. They wanted $488.50 to try and fix. My body shop estimated $164. and purchased correct Toyota parts, followed their instructions. The bars only held for a few minutes, then they failed to hold up the trunk again. I was almost injured again with this failure, but managed to catch it in time. They refunded me $100. since they said there was no more "play" to work with. Went on social media only to find that many Toyota Camry 2016 and 2015s had torsion bar failures, with no recall. Some said that they spent over $1000. trying to fix it, but never could, no matter what dealership or body shop repaired it. Others gave up and sold it. It is not something that I can "live with". the trunk is heavy to life and unstable. Have to hold it while trying to put things in trunk. I have had 6 Toyotas in my life and 3 cars with Auto Nation, but have never had the lack of integrity, follow-through and non-solutions that I have experienced with the purchase of this car. Unlike others, I can't afford to sell/replace my car at this time, and can't live with it as is. I truly love my car, but do not feel safe using it and am totally frustrated. All I want is for Toyota and/or its mfr.) to own up to the design flaw and either fix or replace it. Note: I have photos of broken part, failure, and estimates, but couldn't get them to download onto your form. (It just kept deleting the form and having me start over). Please advise if I can send another way.

  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-17
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 4T1K61AK4PU
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,LANE DEPARTURE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: The smart stop system, the vehicle stability control system, the electrical power steering system, the blind spot monitoring system, the secondary collision brake system, and the lane keeping assistance all malfunctioned while traveling home one night. My made a really loud continuous beeping sound as I was driving the vehicle sensed it was departing its lane and the lane keeping assistance over steered left. This caused my vehicle to scrape the curb, causing cosmetic damage, mess up the wheel alignment , and crack front drivers side rim, because I physically tried to turn away to prevent any impact with the curb. I also had this vehicle stop in the middle of the road MULTIPLE TIMES DETECTING an object or obstruction was in the road when nothing was there! This almost caused rear end collisions multiple times when it happened. I actually turned this feature down to the lowest possible setting to prevent it from happening. If you are asking is it available for inspection by me it is not. This vehicle had an extremely high monthly car note. Once I took it to the dealership for inspection, they were not willing to honor my new car warranty. Even though I brought this car with 10 miles on the odometer. The dealership was negligent, & as was Toyota corporation. when I called to have it inspected and got their upper management involved. They sent out a 3rd party inspector to look at my car at Jerry’s Toyota inc, located in Baltimore Maryland where it was purchased. Upon inspection nothing was said or noted at all about any of the malfunctioned systems to my vehicle, they used it having exterior damage from impacting the curb to say, the problem was my fault & to get insurance to fix it because it’s not their problem. Yes my safety and other safety were put at risk because of this vehicle. Yes it was inspected by a 3rd party inspector Toyota hired to look at the vehicle. It has since been repossessed because I could not drive it safely. No their were no warning lamps prior

    Vehicle year: 2024

This is my 5th Toyota Camry and I'm disappointed with my recent purchase. I've noticed some road noise and the front end seems to scrape easily. Additionally, I find the seats to be uncomfortable and the car sounds hollow when I close the doors. I'm considering trading it in for a different car, but I loved my 2017 Camry. I hope Toyota can improve the quality of their newer models. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

    Vehicle year: 2020

I recently traded in my 2015 Camry, which had less than 100k miles and no issues, for a brand new 2020 Camry as a graduation present to myself. I was so excited to drive off the lot with only 13 miles on it! Unfortunately, within just two months, the battery randomly died. Despite knowing for a fact that no lights were left on and no doors were left open, the battery still died. My boyfriend was coming to pick me up from the airport in my car and texted me to say that it was dead. I thought it was a joke until he showed up in his car! When I took it to the dealership, they didn't take me seriously and laughed, saying that I must have forgotten to turn off a light. It was really frustrating to be belittled like that. They tested the battery and it came back fine, but today, when I went to start my car, the starter was shot! In a car with less than 7k miles! I'm really disappointed with the customer service and how they've handled this issue. I've never had a car with so many issues in such a short time span, and it's been really frustrating to have so many people not take me seriously. Unfortunately, I wouldn't recommend this car to anyone and I wish I could get rid of it!

After reading every review on this thread, it seems that I am one of about 20 fellow 2004 Camry owners who have experienced similar, if not the same, issues with acceleration and/or rattling noises near the driver side firewall area. It's a shame, because prior to this Camry, which I purchased used from Carsense in 2014 w/76K miles on it, I was a devoted Toyota owner. However, my experience with this model has changed my opinion of Toyota. If you are considering this model, my advice would be to move onto another option. Don't take your chances. Make sure to research EVERYTHING prior to signing the dotted line. Also, don't pass on the extended warranty (even though that's not a 100% guaranteed safety net either).

Hey there! Have you had a chance to look up the issues with these cars? Unfortunately, many of them seem to have a torque converter shudder under light throttle. I've actually had to replace two torque converters and even a whole transmission, but the shuddering still persists. It's a shame that Toyota seems to be cutting costs these days, unlike in the 90s when their cars were top-notch. Interestingly, this transmission doesn't even come with a dipstick! Have you considered trading it in? Personally, I've had great experiences with Honda. Just a thought!

    Vehicle year: 2013

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with our 2nd Toyota Camry. Our first one was a 2004 model with 150k miles and it's still running great! However, we've been having some trouble with the radio in our 2013 Toyota Camry. Whenever we use the rear defrost, there's a lot of static. We took it to the dealer last winter, but they didn't think it was an issue. We've noticed it mostly in the cooler months. I was wondering if any other 2013 Toyota Camry owners have experienced this problem? Thanks for your help!

  1. Jerrold Dare 2025-10-22

    Vehicle year: 2009

The V-6 engine in this car is impressively quick, boasting more horsepower than most muscle cars from the 60s. From day one, I have personally put 2652k on the clock and have only needed to make a few repairs, such as wheel bearings and struts at 150K. Surprisingly, the brakes didn't need replacing until 90K! I make sure to change the oil every 5K and get 25mpg in mixed driving and 31mpg on long trips. Even with four kids, the interior has held up well. While the paint has chipped a bit easily, I have taken this car on many 500 mile plus trips through the NW in winter. I have no intention of replacing this car before 300K. Although changing the spark plugs was a bit of a pain as the intake had to be removed, it only took about 4.5 hours. While the engine is getting a little noisy at start up, it quiets down to normal at temperature, which seems to be common. I recently replaced the original serpentine belt, which looked fine and had 250k on it. This car is awesome in the snow. Although the A/C pump has begun to tick a little, it still functions fine. I just replaced the failed alternator at 172000.

    Vehicle year: 2006

Hi there! I recently purchased a Lunar Mist 2006 Camry SE 6cyl auto. As someone who has previously owned 4 new Accords (90, 94, 98, 03), I can confidently say that the Camry is a great choice. It's much quieter, roomier, and smoother on the road than the Accord. The dash layout is better, and even the steering wheel audio controls are lighted! While the 03 Accord quality was not up to my expectations, the Camry SE is sportier and handles much better. Both V6s have plenty of power, and while the Accord did get a MPG or so better, the Camry more than makes up for that in everyday driving pleasure. It's very easy to live with! Thanks for reading.

    Vehicle year: 2005

I bought my 2005 Camry LE brand new in August 2005 and it now has about 140,000 miles on it, 13 and a half years later. This car is simply amazing, it never breaks down! Other than routine maintenance such as oil changes, tire rotations, fluid changes, and new shocks, I have only spent about $300.00 on repairs. Yes, you read that right, only $300.00 in 13 and a half years, and that repair was for something that wasn't even that important and was more of a precaution (I can't even remember what it was). Everything still works perfectly, from the A/C and heat to the power windows, transmission, and electrical. I have had no problems at all. This car just keeps on going and going. It has great gas mileage because it's a 4 cylinder. Sure, it's not the most visually exciting car or the most thrilling to drive, but who cares when it's this cheap to operate? I paid around 17k for this car and it's the best money I've ever spent on a vehicle by far!

  4. Oswald Medhurst 2025-10-21

    Vehicle year: 2010

I've owned my 2010 Camry LE I4 for 2.5 years and have put 51K miles on it. This car is perfect for what it is - a comfortable daily commuter that's easy to maintain. I've taken lots of road trips in the Camry and it's perfect for the open roads. I've even gotten as much as 36 mpg if I keep it at 70 mph, but on average I get around 32 mpg going 80. Some negative reviews about the transmission keep popping up, but I've never had a problem with mine since I drive the car gently to keep the wear and tear down. So far, the reliability has been perfect. I haven't had to go to the dealer once for warranty repair. If you're looking for a commuter car, the Camry is a great choice that won't disappoint. Just don't expect BMW handling.

  5. Clint Quigley 2025-10-20

    Vehicle year: 2021

I've only had the car for 4 months, but it's quickly becoming one of my all-time favorites. It's very smooth and quiet around town, comfortable on long trips, and consistently gets 40+ mpg on the highway! My family and I went on three 5+ hour road trips with no complaints from the kids (thanks to internet subscriptions and iPads). While it's not a sports car (and I've owned a few of those), I find it plenty quick for a 4-cylinder Camry. Handling isn't amazing either, but what you give up in handling, you gain in comfort and ride quality, which is a happy trade-off, in my opinion. I'm looking forward to testing the AWD come winter and will likely add snow tires as I live in the north. Time will tell as far as reliability is concerned, but as someone who's owned many domestic-made vehicles (with a myriad of mechanical issues from the start), I'll go out on a limb and take my chances with the Toyota.
