Toyota Camry problems

The Toyota Camry (/ˈkæmri/; Japanese: トヨタ・カムリ Toyota Kamuri) is an automobile sold internationally by the Japanese auto manufacturer Toyota since 1982, spanning multiple generations. Originally compact in size (narrow-body), the Camry has grown since the 1990s to fit the mid-size classification (wide-body)—although the two widths co-existed in that decade. Since the release of the wide-bodied versions, Camry has been extolled by Toyota as the firm's second "world car" after the Corolla. As of 2022, the Camry is positioned above the Corolla and below the Avalon or Crown in several markets.

In Japan, Camry was once exclusive to Toyota Corolla Store retail dealerships. Narrow-body cars also spawned a rebadged sibling in Japan, the Toyota Vista (トヨタ・ビスタ)—also introduced in 1982 and sold at Toyota Vista Store locations. Diesel fuel versions have previously retailed at Toyota Diesel Store. The Vista Ardeo was a wagon version of the Vista V50.

Etymology

The name "Camry" derives from the Japanese word kanmuri (ja:冠, かんむり), meaning "crown". This follows Toyota's naming tradition of using the crown name for primary models starting with the Toyota Crown (1955), continuing with the Toyota Corona (1957) and Corolla (1966); the Latin words for "crown" and "small crown", respectively. Maintaining this theme was the Toyota Tiara (1960) named after the "tiara" form of crown. The Atara trim level name used on the Camry in Australia since 2011 means "crown" in Hebrew. The rebadged Camry variant for Japan, the Toyota Scepter (1991)—took its name from "scepter", a royal accessory to a crown.

Common Toyota Camry problems

The Toyota Camry is known for its reliability and durability, but like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues based on the search results:

  • AC and heater issues: A musty smell coming from the air conditioning vents has been reported by owners of 2012, 2013, and 2014 Camry models. This issue is caused by condensation buildup inside the A/C system, which leads to mold growth. A class-action lawsuit was even filed against Toyota due to the prevalence of this problem.
  • Malfunctioning door locks: The door locks of the 2011 Camry have been reported to malfunction at around 85,000 miles. This safety issue is often resolved by replacing the door lock actuator.
  • Brake problems: Brake issues have been reported in various Camry models. These problems can range from brakes not responding well, leading to collisions, to the brake light coming on randomly. Regular maintenance and inspection of the braking system can help prevent these issues.
  • Excessive oil consumption: This issue is particularly prevalent in 2007, 2008, and 2009 Camry models. It is a result of poorly designed piston rings, which can lead to engine failure if oil levels aren't monitored closely. Regularly checking the oil level is the best solution to prevent engine failure.
  • Leaking head gasket: This problem affects 2002-2006 Camry models and can cause smoke to come out from under the hood, dirty coolant, white smoke from the tailpipe, and engine failure. Regular inspection and maintenance of the coolant and oil can help prevent this issue.
  • Power window failure: Power window failure is a common issue in 7th generation Toyota Camry vehicles. This problem can be caused by off-track windows, bad fuses, or malfunctioning window regulators.
  • Melting dashboard: The main symptom of this issue is a sticky dashboard, which can create a dangerous glare from the sun. Toyota extended dashboard warranty coverage for melted dashboards in January 2015, but it lasted only until May 31, 2017. A dashboard cover can be a solution for this problem.
  • Starter failure: This is a common problem in various Camry models, and it can be caused by a dead battery, a potential alternator problem, or a starter issue. Replacing the battery, alternator, or starter is usually the solution to this problem.
  • Deteriorating rear speaker covers: This issue affects 2002-2006 Camry models and is caused by the plastic Toyota used to manufacture the rear speaker covers cracking or crumbling after prolonged exposure to the elements. Replacing the speaker covers as soon as possible is the best solution to prevent this problem.

While these problems can be frustrating for Camry owners, it's important to note that Toyota is known for its reliability and durability. Regular maintenance and inspection can help prevent many of these issues, and Toyota dealerships and repair centers are equipped to diagnose and repair any problems that may arise.

Toyota Camry 2007
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-07
  • Date Complaint: 2024-11-07
  • VIN: 4T4BE46K77R
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: Because of the sticky dash’s glare on the driver side windshield, I could not see the car ahead of me at all. I almost hit a car that was in front of me not because he had braked because we were both still in motion but the glare was directly in my line of vision. I just happened to put my hand up over the glare and saw there was actually a silver car in front of me and I was way to close to it. No accident occurred but it almost did and certainly could have injured me and/or my passengers. This has to be fixed! That scared me to death! I truly had no idea there was a car in front of me as I could NOT see it from the dash’s glare off the windshield.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-26
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-26
  • VIN: 4T1BE46K97U
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: The problem that I have is the same as the one I years ago. There was a recall on 2007 Toyota Camrys for oil consumption. At the time I waws never getting the maintenance indicator because the engine would run low on oil before I needed an oil change. I am having the same problem again. The car is not leaking oil. It's consuming oil. I now must drive around with extra oil in the trunk in case the oil is low. I have been a Toyota owner since 1986. I have always thought of Toyota as being one of the most reliable cars on the road. I have taken the car to the dealer near me (Toyota South Morrow, GA). Of course they do not want to further investigate this problem further. But I am sure is the problem. My mechanic also agrees that this is likely the problem.? What component failed? Engine / Oil How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? The car could stop at any time with engine failure, blown gaskets, etc. The problem is easily reproduce every oil change. Toyota Dealership has reviewed the problem. Now the consumption is so bad I have to check the oil every 2 weeks. The low oil indicator does not come on. Is there another recall possible if this first recall doesn't fix the problem permanently.

Toyota Camry 2016
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-29
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-20
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • VIN: 4T1BF1FKXGU
  • Components: STRUCTURE,LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES
  • Summary: While loading groceries in my trunk, the torsion bar sheared off and broke (the hook part). It fell hard on my shoulder (fortunately not my neck or head). I have never seen steel actually break rather than bend. I tried to fix it but could not. Trunk is heavy and unstable (falls easily), as is part of car in back. Went to Toyota dealer and found out no recall, and "iffy" fix. They wanted $488.50 to try and fix. My body shop estimated $164. and purchased correct Toyota parts, followed their instructions. The bars only held for a few minutes, then they failed to hold up the trunk again. I was almost injured again with this failure, but managed to catch it in time. They refunded me $100. since they said there was no more "play" to work with. Went on social media only to find that many Toyota Camry 2016 and 2015s had torsion bar failures, with no recall. Some said that they spent over $1000. trying to fix it, but never could, no matter what dealership or body shop repaired it. Others gave up and sold it. It is not something that I can "live with". the trunk is heavy to life and unstable. Have to hold it while trying to put things in trunk. I have had 6 Toyotas in my life and 3 cars with Auto Nation, but have never had the lack of integrity, follow-through and non-solutions that I have experienced with the purchase of this car. Unlike others, I can't afford to sell/replace my car at this time, and can't live with it as is. I truly love my car, but do not feel safe using it and am totally frustrated. All I want is for Toyota and/or its mfr.) to own up to the design flaw and either fix or replace it. Note: I have photos of broken part, failure, and estimates, but couldn't get them to download onto your form. (It just kept deleting the form and having me start over). Please advise if I can send another way.

  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-17
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 4T1K61AK4PU
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,LANE DEPARTURE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: The smart stop system, the vehicle stability control system, the electrical power steering system, the blind spot monitoring system, the secondary collision brake system, and the lane keeping assistance all malfunctioned while traveling home one night. My made a really loud continuous beeping sound as I was driving the vehicle sensed it was departing its lane and the lane keeping assistance over steered left. This caused my vehicle to scrape the curb, causing cosmetic damage, mess up the wheel alignment , and crack front drivers side rim, because I physically tried to turn away to prevent any impact with the curb. I also had this vehicle stop in the middle of the road MULTIPLE TIMES DETECTING an object or obstruction was in the road when nothing was there! This almost caused rear end collisions multiple times when it happened. I actually turned this feature down to the lowest possible setting to prevent it from happening. If you are asking is it available for inspection by me it is not. This vehicle had an extremely high monthly car note. Once I took it to the dealership for inspection, they were not willing to honor my new car warranty. Even though I brought this car with 10 miles on the odometer. The dealership was negligent, & as was Toyota corporation. when I called to have it inspected and got their upper management involved. They sent out a 3rd party inspector to look at my car at Jerry’s Toyota inc, located in Baltimore Maryland where it was purchased. Upon inspection nothing was said or noted at all about any of the malfunctioned systems to my vehicle, they used it having exterior damage from impacting the curb to say, the problem was my fault & to get insurance to fix it because it’s not their problem. Yes my safety and other safety were put at risk because of this vehicle. Yes it was inspected by a 3rd party inspector Toyota hired to look at the vehicle. It has since been repossessed because I could not drive it safely. No their were no warning lamps prior

Latest negative Toyota Camry car reviews

    Vehicle year: 2020

This is the LE with the convenience package. The dashboard is made of shiny plastic that reflects every piece of dust, and the rear window as well as the side windows and windshield give a claustrophobic feeling. The technology is woefully inadequate, and the air conditioning is slow to become effective on a hot day. Additionally, the car hesitates when the accelerator is pressed hard. While the front seats are supportive, they do not provide the cushy comfort needed for a long drive.

  2. Connor Kemmer 2025-08-20

    Vehicle year: 2010

I would love to share my thoughts on driving the 2010 Camry LE 4 cylinder, 6 speed auto for approximately 3 months and 2500 miles. I am extremely pleased with the gas mileage, which is great for everyday use, including mixed driving, freeway commutes to work, and city driving for errands. The car gets an impressive 30.8 mpg, which is fantastic for its size and space. During the first week or two, the transmission seemed to be 'learning' my driving style, but it has since smoothed out beautifully. This is typical of most modern transmissions. I am also very pleased with how secure the car feels when driving in the rain, and the wipers are the best of any vehicle I have driven. This may seem like a small detail, but it could be important to someone considering purchasing this vehicle who often drives in the rain.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2004 Camry that I purchased new. Unfortunately, I had to get the brakes repaired during my 3-day check-up and now I'm on my third throttle body replacement, which cost me $1400. I also had to replace an oxygen sensor. In comparison, my previous vehicle, a 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix, lasted 140,000 miles with the original throttle body and oxygen sensor. I was hoping for a more reliable and dependable vehicle, as advertised, but it seems like I got a bit of a clunker. Take care!

  4. Ibrahim Green 2025-08-16

    Vehicle year: 2018

I really appreciate the handling and performance of the car. It's quite roomy for a mid-size and very comfortable. The safety features are also top-notch. However, I have had some issues with the infotainment system. Unfortunately, Toyota has decided to develop its own system called Entune 3.0 instead of offering Android Auto and Apple Carplay. While I understand that Toyota is not a technology company, I do wish they would consider offering these options. If I had known about the limitations of Entune 3.0, I may have reconsidered my purchase. I also have a 2017 VW with Android Auto and the difference is significant. Entune appears to be several years behind. Android Auto is much easier to use and supports many more apps. I have encountered some problems with Entune 3.0, such as it not auto-starting and not supporting as many apps as Android Auto. Additionally, Scout for GPS navigation is not as capable as either Google Maps or Waze. I hope Toyota will consider offering Android Auto and Apple Carplay in the future, as it would greatly improve the driving experience. In the meantime, I would suggest enabling running Android Auto and Apple Carplay under Entune 3.0.At the moment, Toyota owners cannot use Android Auto or Apple Carplay natively. However, we are working on an update that will be available to both current and future Toyota owners.

I am sorry to hear about your negative experience with your 2017 Camry XSE. It seems like the automatic transmission has been causing some issues for you, which is definitely not what you expected when you made the purchase. It is understandable that you are disappointed with Toyota's response, and I can imagine how frustrating it must be to have to deal with these problems. It is good to know that you are considering other options, such as the Mazda 6. Thank you for sharing your experience, and I hope that you are able to find a car that meets your needs and expectations.

Latest positive Toyota Camry car reviews

  1. Dudley Grady 2025-08-21

    Vehicle year: 2014

So here is my story...I am a home health nurse and do a lot of driving. I had a 2012 Fusion with less than 30,000 miles on it, but unfortunately, it had transmission problems that couldn't be fixed. So, I decided to trade it in for a Camry and I couldn't be happier with my decision! I test drove the Camry LE and XLE, but they felt underpowered and boring. However, when I test drove the SE, I fell in love! The power in this 4 cylinder is remarkable, I thought I was driving a 6 cylinder! I am getting 30 mpg in mixed driving and upwards of 40+ mpg on the highway. This is one solid car and just quality built. You just can't beat a Toyota! Update 2016 - I have over 30,000 miles on the Camry and, of course, being a Toyota, not a single problem. I have changed jobs and don't drive as far these days, so my plan is to have this car for many years. It is a true pleasure to drive and handles so well, I feel safe even in rain and mountainous roads, this SE grips the road. The SE Camry is an awesome car, you do lose the softer ride you get in the more luxury XLE on bumps, but the handling is worth it. I love the half leather half cloth seats and styling of my Camry too. I have had many compliments on this car. The only negative I can say is that the exterior dents very easily, so I try to park far away from other cars. Update March 2017 - I was asked to update my review: Nothing has changed, still the best car in its class in my opinion. No problems mechanically at all. I have 41,500 miles on the odometer and the overall mileage is around 34 mpg mixed driving! Love that! I really need an SUV as I can't haul as much in a car, but because I love this car so much, I can't bring myself to trade it. Oh, there is one issue, it seems Toyota made so many of these cars and flooded the market, the resale value is terrible!I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with you. I recently test drove a Highlander and was offered a trade-in value that was about half of what I initially paid for my Camry three years ago. It was definitely a bit of a shock, but I wanted to let you know in case you're in the market for a Camry. You might be able to find a slightly used one for a great price! Of course, as an owner, it's not the best news, but I hope this information helps you out. Take care!

    Vehicle year: 2000

Toyota is known for its reliability, not flashy gadgets. If you're looking for a dependable, efficient, and safe car, Toyota is the way to go. Unlike other brands, Toyota prioritizes your safety over entertainment systems on wheels. In March 2018, I gave my Toyota to my daughter and son-in-law, and it's still going strong at 200K! Although a few things don't work, like the power mirrors and an instrument dash light, I have no qualms about its dependability and safety. I chose a Toyota sedan as my main trip car for long trips because it's fun to drive with the V6, and I didn't sacrifice too much in mileage. As of this writing, Honda has dropped the V6 in the Accord, leaving the Camry and Altima as the best options for family sedans that are fun to drive. The most recent Toyota Camry commercial featuring a family, a deer, and a camper perfectly captures the essence of Toyota's target market.

  3. Leopoldo Mueller 2025-08-21

    Vehicle year: 1998

You've had this car for 14 years and it's been problem-free. It's super quiet and surprisingly fast for a 4-cylinder car. The stock speakers sound great and it's a great car for anyone. You're interested in how the new Camrys have improved since yours, but you're impressed with how reliable and well-built your car is. Even with 291,003 miles on it, it still drives like new!

  4. Keshawn Bernhard 2025-08-18

    Vehicle year: 1993

Your 1993 Camry sounds like a great car! With 130,000 miles and no rust, it's clear that it's been well taken care of. Even with minimal maintenance, it's still running beautifully. It may not be the flashiest car on the road, but it's definitely a reliable one. And the fact that it's paid for means you're getting even more value out of it. Here's to a couple more years of happy driving!

  5. Filiberto Ortiz 2025-08-18

    Vehicle year: 2016

You won't find many cars with as many features at such a reasonable price. I've owned this car for three months and I can vouch for its quality. The gear changes are fast, so the pick-up is good and the power is impressive. While it may not feel as smooth on the highway as I would like, it's definitely less noisy than other cars I've driven. The headlights could use some improvement, but overall, I get 21-22 MPG in the city, even though I live in a congested area. The overall MPG is 3 to 4 miles less than stated, but you can't expect great pick-up without paying for the gas. I own the LE model, but I would recommend the XLE or SE models for their better aesthetics. Overall, I would recommend this car to anyone over the pricier Honda, which now has a noisy CVT that I hate. The Altima also has a CVT, and I hate Nissan cars overall due to their poor build quality. The closest competitor could be the Hyundai Sonata, but I fell in love with the Camry's look and Toyota's reliability. I am happy with my car, and my family loves it too.
