Toyota Camry problems

The Toyota Camry (/ˈkæmri/; Japanese: トヨタ・カムリ Toyota Kamuri) is an automobile sold internationally by the Japanese auto manufacturer Toyota since 1982, spanning multiple generations. Originally compact in size (narrow-body), the Camry has grown since the 1990s to fit the mid-size classification (wide-body)—although the two widths co-existed in that decade. Since the release of the wide-bodied versions, Camry has been extolled by Toyota as the firm's second "world car" after the Corolla. As of 2022, the Camry is positioned above the Corolla and below the Avalon or Crown in several markets.
In Japan, Camry was once exclusive to Toyota Corolla Store retail dealerships. Narrow-body cars also spawned a rebadged sibling in Japan, the Toyota Vista (トヨタ・ビスタ)—also introduced in 1982 and sold at Toyota Vista Store locations. Diesel fuel versions have previously retailed at Toyota Diesel Store. The Vista Ardeo was a wagon version of the Vista V50.
Etymology
The name "Camry" derives from the Japanese word kanmuri (ja:冠, かんむり), meaning "crown". This follows Toyota's naming tradition of using the crown name for primary models starting with the Toyota Crown (1955), continuing with the Toyota Corona (1957) and Corolla (1966); the Latin words for "crown" and "small crown", respectively. Maintaining this theme was the Toyota Tiara (1960) named after the "tiara" form of crown. The Atara trim level name used on the Camry in Australia since 2011 means "crown" in Hebrew. The rebadged Camry variant for Japan, the Toyota Scepter (1991)—took its name from "scepter", a royal accessory to a crown.

Common Toyota Camry problems
The Toyota Camry is known for its reliability and durability, but like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues based on the search results:
- AC and heater issues: A musty smell coming from the air conditioning vents has been reported by owners of 2012, 2013, and 2014 Camry models. This issue is caused by condensation buildup inside the A/C system, which leads to mold growth. A class-action lawsuit was even filed against Toyota due to the prevalence of this problem.
- Malfunctioning door locks: The door locks of the 2011 Camry have been reported to malfunction at around 85,000 miles. This safety issue is often resolved by replacing the door lock actuator.
- Brake problems: Brake issues have been reported in various Camry models. These problems can range from brakes not responding well, leading to collisions, to the brake light coming on randomly. Regular maintenance and inspection of the braking system can help prevent these issues.
- Excessive oil consumption: This issue is particularly prevalent in 2007, 2008, and 2009 Camry models. It is a result of poorly designed piston rings, which can lead to engine failure if oil levels aren't monitored closely. Regularly checking the oil level is the best solution to prevent engine failure.
- Leaking head gasket: This problem affects 2002-2006 Camry models and can cause smoke to come out from under the hood, dirty coolant, white smoke from the tailpipe, and engine failure. Regular inspection and maintenance of the coolant and oil can help prevent this issue.
- Power window failure: Power window failure is a common issue in 7th generation Toyota Camry vehicles. This problem can be caused by off-track windows, bad fuses, or malfunctioning window regulators.
- Melting dashboard: The main symptom of this issue is a sticky dashboard, which can create a dangerous glare from the sun. Toyota extended dashboard warranty coverage for melted dashboards in January 2015, but it lasted only until May 31, 2017. A dashboard cover can be a solution for this problem.
- Starter failure: This is a common problem in various Camry models, and it can be caused by a dead battery, a potential alternator problem, or a starter issue. Replacing the battery, alternator, or starter is usually the solution to this problem.
- Deteriorating rear speaker covers: This issue affects 2002-2006 Camry models and is caused by the plastic Toyota used to manufacture the rear speaker covers cracking or crumbling after prolonged exposure to the elements. Replacing the speaker covers as soon as possible is the best solution to prevent this problem.
While these problems can be frustrating for Camry owners, it's important to note that Toyota is known for its reliability and durability. Regular maintenance and inspection can help prevent many of these issues, and Toyota dealerships and repair centers are equipped to diagnose and repair any problems that may arise.

Toyota Camry 2007
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-07
- Date Complaint: 2024-11-07
- VIN: 4T4BE46K77R
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: Because of the sticky dash’s glare on the driver side windshield, I could not see the car ahead of me at all. I almost hit a car that was in front of me not because he had braked because we were both still in motion but the glare was directly in my line of vision. I just happened to put my hand up over the glare and saw there was actually a silver car in front of me and I was way to close to it. No accident occurred but it almost did and certainly could have injured me and/or my passengers. This has to be fixed! That scared me to death! I truly had no idea there was a car in front of me as I could NOT see it from the dash’s glare off the windshield.

- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-26
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-26
- VIN: 4T1BE46K97U
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: The problem that I have is the same as the one I years ago. There was a recall on 2007 Toyota Camrys for oil consumption. At the time I waws never getting the maintenance indicator because the engine would run low on oil before I needed an oil change. I am having the same problem again. The car is not leaking oil. It's consuming oil. I now must drive around with extra oil in the trunk in case the oil is low. I have been a Toyota owner since 1986. I have always thought of Toyota as being one of the most reliable cars on the road. I have taken the car to the dealer near me (Toyota South Morrow, GA). Of course they do not want to further investigate this problem further. But I am sure is the problem. My mechanic also agrees that this is likely the problem.? What component failed? Engine / Oil How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? The car could stop at any time with engine failure, blown gaskets, etc. The problem is easily reproduce every oil change. Toyota Dealership has reviewed the problem. Now the consumption is so bad I have to check the oil every 2 weeks. The low oil indicator does not come on. Is there another recall possible if this first recall doesn't fix the problem permanently.

Toyota Camry 2016
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-29
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-20
- Number Of Injuries: 1
- VIN: 4T1BF1FKXGU
- Components: STRUCTURE,LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES
- Summary: While loading groceries in my trunk, the torsion bar sheared off and broke (the hook part). It fell hard on my shoulder (fortunately not my neck or head). I have never seen steel actually break rather than bend. I tried to fix it but could not. Trunk is heavy and unstable (falls easily), as is part of car in back. Went to Toyota dealer and found out no recall, and "iffy" fix. They wanted $488.50 to try and fix. My body shop estimated $164. and purchased correct Toyota parts, followed their instructions. The bars only held for a few minutes, then they failed to hold up the trunk again. I was almost injured again with this failure, but managed to catch it in time. They refunded me $100. since they said there was no more "play" to work with. Went on social media only to find that many Toyota Camry 2016 and 2015s had torsion bar failures, with no recall. Some said that they spent over $1000. trying to fix it, but never could, no matter what dealership or body shop repaired it. Others gave up and sold it. It is not something that I can "live with". the trunk is heavy to life and unstable. Have to hold it while trying to put things in trunk. I have had 6 Toyotas in my life and 3 cars with Auto Nation, but have never had the lack of integrity, follow-through and non-solutions that I have experienced with the purchase of this car. Unlike others, I can't afford to sell/replace my car at this time, and can't live with it as is. I truly love my car, but do not feel safe using it and am totally frustrated. All I want is for Toyota and/or its mfr.) to own up to the design flaw and either fix or replace it. Note: I have photos of broken part, failure, and estimates, but couldn't get them to download onto your form. (It just kept deleting the form and having me start over). Please advise if I can send another way.

- Date Complaint: 2024-10-17
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 4T1K61AK4PU
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,LANE DEPARTURE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: The smart stop system, the vehicle stability control system, the electrical power steering system, the blind spot monitoring system, the secondary collision brake system, and the lane keeping assistance all malfunctioned while traveling home one night. My made a really loud continuous beeping sound as I was driving the vehicle sensed it was departing its lane and the lane keeping assistance over steered left. This caused my vehicle to scrape the curb, causing cosmetic damage, mess up the wheel alignment , and crack front drivers side rim, because I physically tried to turn away to prevent any impact with the curb. I also had this vehicle stop in the middle of the road MULTIPLE TIMES DETECTING an object or obstruction was in the road when nothing was there! This almost caused rear end collisions multiple times when it happened. I actually turned this feature down to the lowest possible setting to prevent it from happening. If you are asking is it available for inspection by me it is not. This vehicle had an extremely high monthly car note. Once I took it to the dealership for inspection, they were not willing to honor my new car warranty. Even though I brought this car with 10 miles on the odometer. The dealership was negligent, & as was Toyota corporation. when I called to have it inspected and got their upper management involved. They sent out a 3rd party inspector to look at my car at Jerry’s Toyota inc, located in Baltimore Maryland where it was purchased. Upon inspection nothing was said or noted at all about any of the malfunctioned systems to my vehicle, they used it having exterior damage from impacting the curb to say, the problem was my fault & to get insurance to fix it because it’s not their problem. Yes my safety and other safety were put at risk because of this vehicle. Yes it was inspected by a 3rd party inspector Toyota hired to look at the vehicle. It has since been repossessed because I could not drive it safely. No their were no warning lamps prior

Vehicle year: 2017
After test driving several competitors to the Camry (Altima, Fusion and Accord), I decided to purchase a 2017 XLE with the 2.5L 4cyl engine. Although it may not be as thrilling to drive as the Fusion with the 2.0 eco boost, the price difference (31K vs 38K MSRP for similarly equipped models) more than makes up for it, especially in a segment where most of us need the car for commuting to work and family road trips. While the Camry may not be the most exciting car to drive or the most stylish, I ultimately decided to trade in my 2012 Passat for the Camry due to its affordability and expected reliability. Some of the pros that I see include its price, reliability, and easy-to-use navigation system, which is more functional than those of the Accord or Altima. On the other hand, some of the cons include its styling and driving dynamics.

Vehicle year: 2015
I've had my car for three weeks now and I'm really enjoying it, except for one thing - the tires. Unfortunately, I noticed a bounce at low speeds almost as soon as I drove it out of the dealership. I took it back to the shop at 375 miles on the odometer and they spent 4 hours trying to balance the tires, but the problem only got worse. I had to take it back again at 560 miles and this time they had to replace two of the tires. While the ride is a little smoother now, there is still a noticeable tire balance problem, especially at city driving speeds and speeds of 60 plus. These tires are the Turanza Bridgestone and I don't think they're suitable for a luxury vehicle. I'm not sure why Toyota decided to use them. I've had to go back to the dealership several times to try and fix the problem, and they finally recognized that the tires were defective. They worked with me to put new Michelins on the car, and now it rides like it should. I'm really happy with the end results. Even after 35,000 plus miles, I still love the car with Michelin Tires. However, I still think Toyota should reconsider using Bridgestone Tires.

Congratulations on your new Camry! It's great to hear that you've had such positive experiences with Toyota vehicles in the past. The 2021 Camry sounds like an excellent choice, and it's wonderful to hear that it's smooth and easy to drive. The multimedia system also sounds fantastic, especially with its easy connectivity to both iPhone and Android phones. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!

Vehicle year: 1995
I work for a pizza shop in the suburbs of Philadelphia. My boss has three company cars for deliveries: two Prius's and a '95 Camry. The Camry has been through a lot, with over 172k miles on it and driven by many different drivers each night. It's been crashed and driven off the road, but it has never left a pizza stranded. Despite all of this, every time you turn the key, it fires right up! I always smile when my boss hands me the key to it when I come in for my shift. It's truly a remarkable car!

Vehicle year: 1997
Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my '97 Camry that I bought from a lovely old lady a year ago. It only had 35k on it, so I thought it would be a smart investment. So far, it's been a great car with no major issues. It does blow blue smoke after sitting for a while, but it clears up quickly. It also burns oil, but I've heard that's a common issue with these cars. The metallic paint still looks glossy and shiny, almost like new! The only downside is that the 2.2 liter engine doesn't have much power. I've heard that the V6 version of the Camry is much better in that regard. Thanks for listening!

This car has been a complete disappointment since the day of purchase. Despite multiple visits to the dealership, the knocking noise in the rear persists, and the interior constantly rattles. The heated seats are also barely functional. Despite being under warranty, Toyota has refused to address these issues. As a result, I have lost faith in the brand and will not be purchasing any Toyota products in the future. This experience has taught me that they definitely don't build them like they used to. I urge others to consider alternative options.

Vehicle year: 2009
I leased a 2009 Camry Le back in the summer of '08. Unfortunately, I have had some issues with the car, such as accelerator and brake pedals that seem to have a mind of their own. In the past year, the car has developed a problem where the tension of the gas pedal seems to be constantly changing, which can be frustrating and even dangerous. At times, it responds with just the slightest amount of pressure, while other times, applying the same amount of force results in no acceleration at all. It's like the car encounters dead spots where it simply refuses to accelerate, which can be inconvenient when you need a burst of power to pass or get out of someone's way.

Vehicle year: 1991
My uncle gave me a base model 1991 Camry for my first car, and it was a great first car! It got me from point A to point B, and even survived three separate car accidents with only body damage. Luckily, my dad was able to fix the car every time. I even gave it a name, Cameron. Sadly, one day on my way to class, the steering locked up while I was turning and the engine shut off completely. Every time I turned the engine back on, it would only run for a few minutes before shutting off again. We had to tow it to the mechanic, and that was the end of my little Camry. I cried like I had lost a person, but it was a wonderful year and a half, and I would highly recommend this car to anybody!

Hello! I've been the proud owner of this SE since June 2014. I mainly use it for commuting to work and for weekend duties, such as following my two HS athletes. On a few occasions, I've even driven the car all the way to the Carolina coast from Ohio! However, I have noticed that the front seats can be quite uncomfortable, which is a shame. After driving for more than two hours, I find myself needing to stop and stretch. I never experienced sciatic pain until I owned this car, which I think might be due to the low seat position and the thickness of the seating materials. Perhaps Toyota had to thin the lower seat to accommodate the power seat mechanicals. Another issue I've encountered is that if I adjust the seat upward to achieve a more comfortable seating position, I sometimes bump my head getting in and out of the car. I'm not very tall (5'10

I have owned 7 Toyotas, including 3 Camrys, and I am confident in Toyota's reliability. However, I experienced discomfort with the acceleration of the 2010 model, which was practically unusable in stop-and-go traffic. After consulting with the shop manager, I discovered that the pedal assembly from Toyota's US vendor was the cause of the recalls, while the Japanese Nippon Denso made pedals were recall-free. I made a special order for the latter and the problem was solved. Overall, I remain confident in Toyota's quality and reliability.
