The Toyota Camry (/ˈkæmri/; Japanese: トヨタ・カムリ Toyota Kamuri) is an automobile sold internationally by the Japanese auto manufacturer Toyota since 1982, spanning multiple generations. Originally compact in size (narrow-body), the Camry has grown since the 1990s to fit the mid-size classification (wide-body)—although the two widths co-existed in that decade. Since the release of the wide-bodied versions, Camry has been extolled by Toyota as the firm's second "world car" after the Corolla. As of 2022, the Camry is positioned above the Corolla and below the Avalon or Crown in several markets.

In Japan, Camry was once exclusive to Toyota Corolla Store retail dealerships. Narrow-body cars also spawned a rebadged sibling in Japan, the Toyota Vista (トヨタ・ビスタ)—also introduced in 1982 and sold at Toyota Vista Store locations. Diesel fuel versions have previously retailed at Toyota Diesel Store. The Vista Ardeo was a wagon version of the Vista V50.

Etymology

The name "Camry" derives from the Japanese word kanmuri (ja:冠, かんむり), meaning "crown". This follows Toyota's naming tradition of using the crown name for primary models starting with the Toyota Crown (1955), continuing with the Toyota Corona (1957) and Corolla (1966); the Latin words for "crown" and "small crown", respectively. Maintaining this theme was the Toyota Tiara (1960) named after the "tiara" form of crown. The Atara trim level name used on the Camry in Australia since 2011 means "crown" in Hebrew. The rebadged Camry variant for Japan, the Toyota Scepter (1991)—took its name from "scepter", a royal accessory to a crown.

Negative 1991 Toyota Camry car reviews

  1. Deshaun Von 2024-10-09

I purchased this car a year and a half ago. Despite encountering a strange intermittent problem where the car stalls at stops for no apparent reason and runs sluggishly, I have invested a significant amount of money to resolve the issue. Despite numerous visits to the mechanic, including the dealer, the problem remains unresolved. However, I remain confident that a solution will be found.

  2. Ross Hickle 2024-08-28

I've had some issues with this car. Firstly, it's designed for smaller people, and as someone who is 6'1

  3. Mac Altenwerth 2024-08-26

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share a story about my first car. My parents made me buy a car when I was young, and I didn't know anything about cars at the time. I ended up buying a Camry because everyone said it was the best, but it ended up being a nightmare. I spent thousands of dollars repairing it, even though it only had 56,000 miles on it. Now, I'm a big fan of sedans, and I've always loved Cressidas. Unfortunately, my parents didn't let me get a 6 cylinder when I was younger. Long story short, my Camry was stolen twice and crashed, but my parents still made me drive it. It wasn't just a very bland and baseline

  4. Zachary Boyle 2024-07-12

Although my experience with this vehicle was disappointing, I learned a valuable lesson. I had a gut feeling that something wasn't quite right during the test drive, but I still went ahead with the purchase. Unfortunately, the vehicle had a major electrical problem and the fuel pump died shortly after I bought it. Despite these issues, I am confident that I will make a better choice next time by having the vehicle thoroughly checked out before making a purchase. I will be more cautious in the future and only consider newer models from '92-'96.

  5. Keyshawn Kuphal 2024-07-12

I purchased this car back in February with 194,000 miles on it and it ran even better than a brand new car! Due to a lack of driveway space, I let my friend drive it for a month and then stored it at my house. Unfortunately, after sitting for 4 months, the battery and fuel pump died on me. Additionally, there was a serious electrical problem with the left blinker flashing on and off at random times. I decided to sell it for $200 and was relieved to be rid of this expensive-to-fix car. While I was disappointed with the '90 or '91 models, I might consider a '92-'96 body style in the future. Overall, I believe these cars are a bit overrated and I was disappointed that it didn't last until the 400,000 mile mark!

Positive 1991 Toyota Camry car reviews

  1. Hester Gleichner 2024-11-15

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my V6 Camry DX that I purchased brand new in 1991. It has 135,000 miles and I'm happy to say that I haven't had any problems with it. The engine runs like it's brand new and it's been very low maintenance. Overall, I'm very satisfied with my purchase!

  2. Columbus Hartmann 2024-11-03

We purchased our 1991 Camry from our in-laws when it had 83,000 miles on it in 1999. It has now clocked nearly 250,000 miles and still runs and drives great. Although the 4 cyl. isn't the quickest, especially with the A/C on, it still manages to get 33+ mpg on the highway regularly. There are no squeaks or rattles inside, and the cloth seats are holding up extremely well. However, what clinches it for me is the rock-solid auto-transmission. If only Toyota could have made the car bodies less prone to rust during these years, this would undoubtedly be one of the best cars we have ever owned. Period. I can only hope that one day we could put Toyota powertrains into Chevy car bodies!

  3. Ryder Brekke 2024-10-29

I purchased this car back in June when it had 147,000 miles on it. As of November 10th, it now has 160,500 miles. Although it comes from Ohio and has some rust, it has been a reliable vehicle for me here in California. I have only had to replace the tires, brakes, and get regular oil changes. The car runs quietly, smoothly, and gets great mileage. It is a tough car that has served me well. The only downside is that I need a valve adjustment, which can be expensive due to the special types of valves it requires. However, I plan to have a new timing belt, coolant flush, and transmission service done at the same time to get my Camry running like new again. Overall, I highly recommend this car to anyone looking for a reliable vehicle.

  4. Ramiro Cassin 2024-10-19

What a fantastic car! It has exceeded all of my expectations. It handled the toughest winter driving conditions with ease and feels like it was made just for me. I originally sold it to my son as a 'winter' car, and after two years of driving it, I am now buying it back as my second car for the summer. Although it has 125,000 miles on it, it still runs great, with the exception of an intermittent oil leak that only occurs on long, fast highways. I can't seem to locate the source of the leak, but everything else, apart from the A/C, is in perfect working order. Although I also own an '02 Honda, this Camry has proven to be far superior. I plan to keep it until it finally gives up the ghost!

  5. Kevin Hickle 2024-10-02

I own a base model Toyota Camry, and I love it! I purchased the car when it had 209k on it, and it ran like a champ. Now, with 255k on the clock, it still runs strong. The car is so easy to fix, everything is right there!
