The Toyota Camry (/ˈkæmri/; Japanese: トヨタ・カムリ Toyota Kamuri) is an automobile sold internationally by the Japanese auto manufacturer Toyota since 1982, spanning multiple generations. Originally compact in size (narrow-body), the Camry has grown since the 1990s to fit the mid-size classification (wide-body)—although the two widths co-existed in that decade. Since the release of the wide-bodied versions, Camry has been extolled by Toyota as the firm's second "world car" after the Corolla. As of 2022, the Camry is positioned above the Corolla and below the Avalon or Crown in several markets.

In Japan, Camry was once exclusive to Toyota Corolla Store retail dealerships. Narrow-body cars also spawned a rebadged sibling in Japan, the Toyota Vista (トヨタ・ビスタ)—also introduced in 1982 and sold at Toyota Vista Store locations. Diesel fuel versions have previously retailed at Toyota Diesel Store. The Vista Ardeo was a wagon version of the Vista V50.

Etymology

The name "Camry" derives from the Japanese word kanmuri (ja:冠, かんむり), meaning "crown". This follows Toyota's naming tradition of using the crown name for primary models starting with the Toyota Crown (1955), continuing with the Toyota Corona (1957) and Corolla (1966); the Latin words for "crown" and "small crown", respectively. Maintaining this theme was the Toyota Tiara (1960) named after the "tiara" form of crown. The Atara trim level name used on the Camry in Australia since 2011 means "crown" in Hebrew. The rebadged Camry variant for Japan, the Toyota Scepter (1991)—took its name from "scepter", a royal accessory to a crown.

Common 1997 Toyota Camry problems

The 1997 Toyota Camry is a popular midsize sedan known for its refined engine, standard anti-lock braking system, and traction control system. However, like any vehicle, it is prone to certain problems that owners should be aware of.

One common issue with the 1997 Toyota Camry is engine failure, particularly overheating. This can be caused by a low engine coolant level, clogged hoses, burnt-out radiators, broken thermostats, a cracked head gasket, a faulty water pump, or oil leaks. Regular oil changes and using quality engine oil can help prevent some of these issues.

Electrical problems are also common in the 1997 Toyota Camry. These can manifest as faulty spark plugs, dimming lights, the car failing to start, and frequent burning out of fuses. It is essential to monitor the car for these warning signs to avoid interruptions in your commute.

Transmission issues are another common problem with the Toyota Camry model, including transmission slipping, unexpected gear shifts, rattling noises when shifting gears, timing belt failure, transmission fluid leaks, and flashing of the transmission warning light. Upgrading the transmission system can improve car performance and retain resale value.

Suspension problems are also prevalent in the 1997 Camry model, primarily due to faulty strut mounts, control valve defects, and shock absorber flaws. These issues can affect driving by causing the car to ride roughly or begin to drift or pull when turning. Suspension repairs should be performed by a reliable car maintenance company.

Fuel system flaws are another concern raised by 1997 Toyota Camry car buyers. The leading causes are defective throttle bodies, clogged fuel filters, a failed fuel pump, and malfunctioning fuel injectors. If your vehicle gives you trouble starting or running, it is recommended to call your local auto dealer for proper maintenance.

Brake problems are a crucial safety feature that should not be neglected. Camry owners should not ignore the brake warning light whenever it comes on in the dashboard. The major brake failure signs are rattling noises when applying the brakes, brake pedal wear, and leaking brake fluid. A brake check-up before any road trip can help identify these flaws in time and have them fixed.

Exhaust system issues are also prevalent in the 1997 Toyota Camry, primarily due to faulty oxygen sensors, exhaust manifold defects, and defective intake. These issues can affect the car's performance and should be addressed promptly.

In summary, the 1997 Toyota Camry is a reliable and popular midsize sedan, but it is prone to certain problems that owners should be aware of. Regular maintenance and monitoring can help prevent or address these issues, ensuring the car's longevity and performance.

Negative 1997 Toyota Camry car reviews

  1. Quinn Terry 2024-11-27

I bought this car with high hopes, but unfortunately, I've had a few issues with it. I've had to replace the power steering rack, and even had to get a new engine due to sludge. Additionally, my window is starting to go out and the car rattles quite a bit. Despite these setbacks, I'm still hopeful that I can get it fixed up and running smoothly again. While I may consider other options in the future, I won't let this experience discourage me from exploring all my options.

  2. Marques Kassulke 2024-11-22

I purchased this car after my previous one was totalled by a teenager. I was drawn to it based on the positive reviews I read here and elsewhere. While I was hoping for a safe and reliable commuter, unfortunately, it has not lived up to those expectations. I have experienced some issues such as a broken steering rack, rattling strut mounts, and the need to replace the rotors and brake pads which have been quite frustrating. In my opinion, Toyota's reputation for quality may be based solely on their indestructible cars of the '80s and very early '90s. However, I still believe that this generation of Camry is a decent car overall.

  3. Vito Feest 2024-10-07

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my car. I've had it for a while now and it's been through a lot with me. It has some wear and tear, like a cracked woodgrain and a rear door handle that doesn't work from the inside, but it's never broken down on me and has taken me many miles. Recently, I've noticed some issues like the key not turning in the ignition and some oil leaks in the front and back of the engine. The radiator is also cracked and the timing belt needs to be replaced. I'm not sure if it's worth spending the money to get it repaired since it's worth less than the cost of repairs. It's a tough decision because I really like this car. Interestingly, my mom has a car that's one year newer and she's never had any of these problems. Thanks for listening!

  4. Charles O'Reilly 2024-09-02

Before purchasing my Camry, I had heard many good things about it. However, I was disappointed with the car's performance. With only 136 Hp, it felt underpowered compared to my 93 Nissan Altima, which has 156 Hp. I also experienced some issues with the brakes and suspension shortly after purchasing the car. Additionally, the electrical system started acting up around 92K miles, causing my battery to drain. While I have had some negative experiences with this car, I understand that everyone's experience may differ. Thank you for considering my perspective.

  5. Eldon Prosacco 2024-06-13

Despite the roomy and comfortable interior design, the ride quality of the Camry is far less than expected. The handling is woefully inadequate and every bump, divot, and imperfection in the road can be felt. Even after replacing all four struts, the issue persists. However, the thoughtfully laid out controls and well-controlled cabin noise showcase the car's attention to detail. While I had originally planned to drive this car for 6-10 years, I am already considering a replacement after less than 3 years.

Positive 1997 Toyota Camry car reviews

  1. Brook Botsford 2025-01-08

I've owned two Camrys, a '99 and a '97, and both have been extremely reliable. However, I have experienced a couple of quirks with mine. I'm not sure if anyone else has had the same problem, but the starter wouldn't engage on either one from time to time. Luckily, it was a quick fix - just tighten the cables on the starter. The other issue I've had is with the flex exhaust coming right off the headers, which tends to burn out. But again, both of these issues were easily and cheaply fixed. I'm currently in the market for a new Camry because the previous owner left my '97 sitting for over 2 years, causing the seals to rot (which could happen to any car). I've been pouring money into fixing the seals here and there, but I know that my cars have just been a bit unlucky. Camrys have a reputation for going 300,000+ miles, and I just wish my car was as well-maintained as others I've seen on the road.

  2. Oda Klocko 2025-01-06

I bought my 1997 Camry brand new in '97 and it's still going strong today, even in 2016! I've only had a few minor issues, such as replacing the spark plug wires at 110,000 miles (which is impressive considering they were the original wires), and replacing the intermittent wiper control bar at around 105,000 miles. I also had to repaint the paint on both side mirrors and replace the driver side inside door latch. But other than that, I've had no problems at all, just normal maintenance. It still runs like new at 120,000 miles! I plan on keeping this car until it falls apart, but I don't see that happening. Since I'm retired now and don't do a lot of driving, I know it will last longer than I will. I absolutely love my Camry!

I received this car from my parents during high school and now I have it with me in college. I have been waiting for it to break down so that I can get a less 'Mom Car', but it has never had any major problems. The only repair it needed in the past 9 years was a strut replacement. The interior quality is impeccable, and the ride and cab noise are as good as my dad's Lexus. Additionally, the spoiler, moon roof, and surprisingly powerful V6 engine do take away some of the 'Mom Car' edge. I have honestly driven it up to 130mph, which is not me bragging about being an idiot, but rather a testament to this car's transcendence above the typical family sedan stereotype. All in all, it is a fantastic car that is worth more than its cost.

Hey there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share something with you. Since March, we've been on the lookout for a new car to replace our 10-year-old Camry. However, after months of searching, we decided to keep it until it breaks. This car has been unbelievably reliable! After 10+ years and 100K miles, the V6 is still running strong, just like the day I drove it off the dealer lot. The front brake pads are still the original ones, and there are still no rattles or squeaks. It even has better interior material than the '07 Camry. I'm still getting approximately 23-25 MPG, which is in line with the old EPA estimate. We only had to pay for one unexpected repair for the leaking rack and pinion. It's going to take a miracle for its replacement to beat this record!

Hi there! I just wanted to share that I absolutely love my 1997 Camry! It's actually my second one, and I drove my first Camry for seven years before passing it on to my son. Even after it got caught in a hail storm, it still ran like a dream! For me, reliability and quality are the most important factors when it comes to transportation, and both of my Camrys have delivered on that front. I'm already looking forward to buying my third one in another year or two!
