The Toyota Camry (/ˈkæmri/; Japanese: トヨタ・カムリ Toyota Kamuri) is an automobile sold internationally by the Japanese auto manufacturer Toyota since 1982, spanning multiple generations. Originally compact in size (narrow-body), the Camry has grown since the 1990s to fit the mid-size classification (wide-body)—although the two widths co-existed in that decade. Since the release of the wide-bodied versions, Camry has been extolled by Toyota as the firm's second "world car" after the Corolla. As of 2022, the Camry is positioned above the Corolla and below the Avalon or Crown in several markets.

In Japan, Camry was once exclusive to Toyota Corolla Store retail dealerships. Narrow-body cars also spawned a rebadged sibling in Japan, the Toyota Vista (トヨタ・ビスタ)—also introduced in 1982 and sold at Toyota Vista Store locations. Diesel fuel versions have previously retailed at Toyota Diesel Store. The Vista Ardeo was a wagon version of the Vista V50.

Etymology

The name "Camry" derives from the Japanese word kanmuri (ja:冠, かんむり), meaning "crown". This follows Toyota's naming tradition of using the crown name for primary models starting with the Toyota Crown (1955), continuing with the Toyota Corona (1957) and Corolla (1966); the Latin words for "crown" and "small crown", respectively. Maintaining this theme was the Toyota Tiara (1960) named after the "tiara" form of crown. The Atara trim level name used on the Camry in Australia since 2011 means "crown" in Hebrew. The rebadged Camry variant for Japan, the Toyota Scepter (1991)—took its name from "scepter", a royal accessory to a crown.

Common 1995 Toyota Camry problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the 1995 Toyota Camry, several common problems have been identified:

  • Transmission Linkage and Gear Shifting Problems: Some owners have experienced difficulties with gear shifting, where the car only goes in reverse but fails to accelerate in forward gears. This issue could be related to problems with the transmission linkage or the intake boot. Checking the transmission linkage and intake system components, like the intake boot, can help diagnose and potentially resolve this issue.
  • Engine Misfiring and Rough Idle: Another common problem reported by owners is engine misfiring, rough idle, and missing at both idle and higher RPMs. This issue can be caused by various factors, including a faulty Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) or bad motor mounts. Unplugging the TPS can sometimes help smooth out the engine at idle, indicating a potential issue with this sensor.
  • Coolant Sensor and Starting Issues: Issues related to the Engine Coolant Sensor have been reported, leading to starting problems and abnormal idling. Replacing the Engine Coolant Sensor has been a successful fix for many owners, restoring normal idling and resolving starting issues. This sensor plays a crucial role in regulating the engine's temperature and performance.
  • Oil Leaks and Engine Oil Consumption: Some owners have faced challenges with oil leaks, which can be caused by issues like a faulty rocker cover gasket. Oil leaks can lead to oil consumption and engine performance issues. Regularly checking for oil leaks and addressing them promptly can help maintain the engine's health and prevent excessive oil consumption.

These common problems with the 1995 Toyota Camry highlight the importance of regular maintenance, timely sensor replacements, and addressing issues like stalling, transmission problems, and oil leaks to ensure the smooth operation and longevity of the vehicle.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-05-27
  • VIN: 4T1SK12E7SU
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary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

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-04-16
  • VIN: 4T1SK12C1SU
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: PROBLEM: MY 1995 CAMRY SUDDENLY ACCELERATED. WHILE ATTEMPTING TO INCREASE SPEED FROM 32 TO 35 MPH IN THE THIRD LANE DURING RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC, MY VEHICLE ACCELERATED AS IF I HAD FLOORED THE GAS PEDAL (THE PEDAL WAS MINIMALLY DEPRESSED.) I IMMEDIATELY STEPPED ON THE BRAKES, THEN TURNED OFF THE ENGINE. I PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL AND GLIDED TO A STOP. AFTER WAITING 2 MINUTES I RESTARTED THE VEHICLE. WITHOUT TOUCHING THE GAS PEDAL THE ENGINE REVED UP PAST 7,000 RPM. I TURNED OFF THE CAR IMMEDIATLY. I TRIED PUSHING THE PEDAL UP AFTER WAITING 3 MINUTES. ONCE AGAIN THE VEHICLE RACED IN NEUTRAL TO 7,000 RPM. I OPENED THE HOOD AND (USING A PAIR OF PLIERS) ROTATED THE THROTTLE ASSEMBLY. WHILE ROTATING THE ASSEMBLY I FELT THE ASSEMBLY HIT AND GO THROUGH SOME KIND OF BARRIER. I RESTARTED MY VEHICLE. THIS TIME IT STARTED NORMALLY. I TOOK THE CAR TO A REPAIR TECH WHO SAID HE THINKS THE SPARK PLUG WIRE CAUGHT ON THE ASSEMBLY. HE WIRE TIED THE SPARK PLUG WIRES TO A SMALL RUBBER HOSE TO SECURE IT. THERE IS ENOUGH PLAY IN WHERE THE CABLES ARE ROUTED (EVEN THOUGH THE WIRES ARE TIGHT) FOR THE SPARK PLUG WIRES TO TOUCH THE ASSEMBLY WHILE DRIVING. THE TECH SAID THAT THAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN THE PROBLEM AND TO CALL HIM IF I HAD ANY MORE PROBLEMS. HE ALSO REMINDED TO TURN OFF THE ENGINE (AGAIN) IF I HAD ANY FURTHER ACCELERATION PROBLEMS. ANY OTHER CAUSES? I ALMOST HIT THE VEHICLE IN IN FRONT OF ME. HAD I NOT TURNED OF THE ENGINE THE BRAKES (EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE NEW) WOULD NOT HAVE STOPPED THE ACCELERATION. I REACTED QUICKLY. FROM SUDDEN ACCELERATION TO ENGINE OFF WERE LESS THAN 3 SECONDS AND THE ENGINE WAS REALLY RACING. THE DEPRESSION I PLACED UPON THE PEDAL SHOULD HAVE TAKEN 10 SECONDS TO BRING ME TO 35 FROM 32. INSTEAD, IN LESS THAN 3 SECONDS I WAS GOING 40 AND ACCELERATING. THE BRAKES ALONE COULD NOT HAVE STOPPED THE ACCELERATION OF THE CAR. *TR

Negative 1995 Toyota Camry car reviews

I purchased my 95 Camry LE with 120K miles in 2008 for $3,000 and recently had to part with it due to an accident. The engine was still running like new at 146K and I had every intention of driving it for another 150K miles. At 140K, the transmission required a rebuild, which was a minor expense of $200, including labor and parts, and came with a lifetime warranty from my trusted mechanic. Although the windshield wash pump never worked, it did not affect the car's overall performance. This car is the epitome of reliability, affordability, and comfort. Even the insurance was less expensive than my other vehicles. It is one of the last cars with actual steel bumpers instead of plastic

Camrys usually have a great reputation, but unfortunately, mine didn't live up to it. I experienced some issues with the motor mounts at 95,000 miles, and later on, the car started leaking oil at about 120,000 miles, which led to the replacement of all the seals. Additionally, the driver's side front power door lock seized at 130,000 miles, which meant that I couldn't open the driver's side door. I went to the Toyota dealership, but unfortunately, they couldn't figure out how to fix it or even get the door open, and they charged me $50 for the service. However, I managed to get it open with a coat hanger and got a local mechanic to diagnose the problem and replace it with used parts.

Positive 1995 Toyota Camry car reviews

My 1995 Toyota Camry has been my trusty companion for years, taking me from place to place with absolute joy. It's clear that this car just wants to be on the road and it truly feels at home there. The suspension articulates every detail of the surface to your hands, allowing you to truly understand what is happening. If the ride is rough, then you're driving somewhere the Camry doesn't want to go. With this being said, I have indulged in a little dirt road rallying and the suspension is tremendous for handling. There is a true feeling of being glued to whatever you are gliding across. In tarmac situations, there is just enough roll to make you avoid pushing the car too hard, but since it has a 5-year-old child's center of gravity, you really have to be pushing it to begin to feel this. I have the front-wheel-drive 4-cylinder LE model with a V6 version available, but I have never felt underpowered in this car. Of course, you will not be beating anyone off the line. The automatic transmission is solid 90% of the time, although it can be a little sluggish. The steering is light and responsive, yet I would say it causes a slight disconnect with the drive, like you would be able to throw the car into a barrel roll while steering with one finger. While for day-to-day driving, this feature is wonderful, the lack of feedback from the steering will allow you to oversteer if not concentrating on where the traction is. Throttle is very responsive and braking is wonderful until you really need them. The AntiLock system loves to engage at opportunities when a fast controlled stop would be possible, so in emergency situations, go ahead and floor it to avoid having the antilock system pulse you right into the back of someone. High MPG and a decent tank make this perfect for commuting. Features are not plentiful, but instead of having a billion buttons that do little, every knob produces a noticeable outcome. The A/C is one of the quickest I have ever experienced. After sitting in the 90-degree Georgia heat, this car will blow cold air within 30 seconds of running, which is something that most new cars can't manage to do. The wiper controls may not be perfect, but they work well enough for most wet weather trekkers. The interior is comfortable and spacious despite the car's size. The only real issue I've had is that the steering wheel blocks the gauges when in the perfect driving position. However, the first impression of this car is a lasting one. It feels the same as the first day I drove it, which I assume varied little from when it drove off the assembly line. I've had no mechanical issues and see nothing happening anytime soon, as is the story for many Toyotas of this time. If you enjoy the test drive, then I promise you will enjoy the car as long as you own it.

You're going to love this car! It's been incredibly reliable for me, even after 160,000 miles. Plus, the gas mileage is fantastic at 28.73 mpg. While the tracking could be improved and the power could be better, overall it's a great choice.

When I was seventeen, I owned a 95 Camry in dark green. Although it wasn't my first choice in cars, my parents strongly recommended it and I eventually gave in. I bought my car with 165xxx miles and I have had absolutely NO problems with it. There was only one other owner of the car and he said the only thing he had done to the car was realign the front wheels. I fell in LOVE with my Camry because I could always trust it, even though it was almost an 18 year old car. It survived the Minnesota summers and winters flawlessly. Although my baby got totaled at 173xxx, I would buy another 95 Camry in a heartbeat!

I have to admit, I was skeptical about this car when my father first started sharing it with me. But since this summer, I've really enjoyed the driving experience. Even though I'm only 16 and pay for my own insurance, I'm already covered for the rest of the year, so I need to get a job. Oh, and I have an orientation this Saturday! Anyway, the functions of this car are simply astonishing and it feels absolutely wonderful.

I'm so glad to hear that you've had such a positive experience with your Camry! It's impressive that it's still running strong even after passing the 200,000 mile mark. Maintaining a car is so important, and it's great to hear that you've been taking good care of it. The power button option sounds like a great feature, and it's awesome that you're getting close to 30 miles per gallon. Your interior design sounds really cool too - it's amazing how you can make a car look expensive with just a few touches. Thanks for sharing your experience with the Camry!
