Toyota Camry 2013 problems
The Toyota Camry (/ˈkæmri/; Japanese: トヨタ・カムリ Toyota Kamuri) is an automobile sold internationally by the Japanese auto manufacturer Toyota since 1982, spanning multiple generations. Originally compact in size (narrow-body), the Camry has grown since the 1990s to fit the mid-size classification (wide-body)—although the two widths co-existed in that decade. Since the release of the wide-bodied versions, Camry has been extolled by Toyota as the firm's second "world car" after the Corolla. As of 2022, the Camry is positioned above the Corolla and below the Avalon or Crown in several markets.
In Japan, Camry was once exclusive to Toyota Corolla Store retail dealerships. Narrow-body cars also spawned a rebadged sibling in Japan, the Toyota Vista (トヨタ・ビスタ)—also introduced in 1982 and sold at Toyota Vista Store locations. Diesel fuel versions have previously retailed at Toyota Diesel Store. The Vista Ardeo was a wagon version of the Vista V50.
Etymology
The name "Camry" derives from the Japanese word kanmuri (ja:冠, かんむり), meaning "crown". This follows Toyota's naming tradition of using the crown name for primary models starting with the Toyota Crown (1955), continuing with the Toyota Corona (1957) and Corolla (1966); the Latin words for "crown" and "small crown", respectively. Maintaining this theme was the Toyota Tiara (1960) named after the "tiara" form of crown. The Atara trim level name used on the Camry in Australia since 2011 means "crown" in Hebrew. The rebadged Camry variant for Japan, the Toyota Scepter (1991)—took its name from "scepter", a royal accessory to a crown.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-28
- VIN: 4T1BF1FK8DU
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: My 2013 Camry shudders when I am accelerating, usually between 15-30 mph. It can be alarming since I expect the car to accelerate quickly but instead it shudders. I was making a right hand turn at a stop light, I went to accelerate and my car shuddered so badly and failed to accerelate so I was almost rear ended. This is a major safety concern when the gears do not properly change during operation. My local Toyota dealership diagnosed it as being a problem with the torque converter. I am aware that Toyota issued a Warranty Enhancement Notification - ZE5 to do three things, put in a new torque converter, additional transmission pan magnets, and update the software. I purchased my vehicle in 2019 and was not made aware of this by the Toyota dealership at the time of purchase nor did I receive anything in the mail. Now, Toyota refuses to correct this problem even though it continues to be an issue with owners of these vehicles.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

I had to let off the brake pedal and slam back on it and the car didn't stop in time and still hit the car in front of me. Very light impact but as a result led to the whole front of the car being out of shape (bumper, grille, headlights). Was aware of its deactivation but was not aware that the force of the brake pedal does not override the auto hold assist when the assist is deactivated.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-11-23
- VIN: 4T1BD1FK1DU
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: 2013 Toyota Camry Hybrid XLE, 2AR-FXE. 134,000 miles. The car burns a quart of oil every 2,000 miles. This issue is from the low-tension piston rings sticking up and leading to scarring of the cylinder walls, causing oil consumption. Toyota had this issue with the 2007 2AZ engine and fixed it, but hasn't done a thing about the 2AR engine with the same problem. Hundreds and thousands of owners have complained but Toyota does not care enough to solve the problem! TOYOTA DOESN'T CARE ABOUT YOU, they only care about themselves and the money they make for charging people thousands of dollars for short blocks out of the owner's pocket for an issue that is not the owner's fault. The car has had 5,000/6 month mile oil changes all its life. Don't buy a 1AR/2AR-equipped Toyota if you expect it to last. It also has a VVT-i rattle problem that is very common that Toyota doesn't bother to fix for their customers.
STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-20
- VIN: 4T4BF1FK7DR
- Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: This complaint has to do with Toyota's electrical steering. I will begin this complaint by explaining what I've learned about the new Toyota vehicles. I've been having electrical problems with my car for the past year. It started with the radio going in and out about eight months ago, and now it has been out completely for two months. The tire pressure sensor warning light cycled intermittently when the radio went out. When the radio finally quit working, the tire pressure warning light stays on constantly. When I researched replacing the radio with a non-Toyota radio, I had to replace all of the wiring harnesses (steering control and radio, and there is another harness that I can't remember -- this is from BestBuy). If you don't replace all of the wiring harnesses, you lose the functions of the electrical and warning system, for example, the tire pressure warning lights. In my research (on the internet), I found that the electrical steering can go out if the system receives a signal that the tires are out of alignment and tire pressure warnings. I check my tire pressure every week because the warning light is on. I do not have a tire pressure reset button on my car. The computer or the computer board on the radio periodically pings the sensors. I began hearing a humming noise from the front right side of my car. I originally thought it was a tension pully on the belt because of the cold weather and no warning light. I drove my car about ten miles with the humming noise. Then, the power steering came on, and the steering became almost impossible. (I learned to drive in vehicles without power steering.) Within minutes of the power steering light coming on, I had a catastrophic failure of all systems in my car. Every warning light on the dashboard was on. After about two minutes, the lights cycled off. About one minute later, they came back on. The difficulty driving without the power steering would have been a bad accident if I had been on the Interstate.
SEAT BELTS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-09
- VIN: 4T1BF1FKXDU
- Components: SEAT BELTS
- Summary: The contact owns a 2013 Toyota Camry. The contact stated while attempting to unbuckle the front passenger’s side seat belt, the seat belt failed to release from the buckle. After further attempts to release the buckle, the anchor assembly fractured. The contact was unable to be reassembled. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was 105,000.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-01
- VIN: 4T1BK1FK3DU
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The panel that controls the interior lights, garage door operation, moon window and an SOS button appeared to have an electrical malfunction and part of that control panel which is on the ceiling between the moon window and mirror melted due a heat source. I do not know what caused the problem but took the vehicle to a dealer and they would not advise on what made the plastic melt. In my opinion that could have caused a fire as the vehicle is in the garage when not in use.
TIRES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-28
- VIN: 4T4BF1FK5DR
- Components: TIRES
- Summary: I purchased a set of 4 Cooper Ultra Touring (235/45R18) Tires in 05/2022. Within 40,000 miles of purchasing the Tires, I was traveling on I-10 WB at approximately 70 MPH when the Vehicle started to shake violently. I pulled into the Right Lane and slowed down significantly and was able to make it to my residence safely. The very next day, I took the Vehicle to a local Goodyear Franchise and had a new Passenger Front Tire installed on 10/24/2022. The Service Tech advised that the Passenger Front Tire was on the verge of separating and that was the reason for the Vehicle Shaking. On 08/28/23, I was traveling on I-10 EB and the Driver's side of the Vehicle started to shake violently again. I traveled in the Right Lane at a slow speed until I came up on a Toyota Dealership in Daphne, Alabama. The Service Tech put the Vehicle up on a lift and advised me that the Driver's Side Rear Tire had separated and the Driver's side front tire had an uneven wear pattern on the inside edge. I had both tires promptly replaced. I have done my due diligence and have discovered many recalls on Cooper Tires as of late. The same descriptions I have read online are exactly what I have experienced with my two tires that have separated. I did check to see if these Tires were apart of any recalls and they are not. One thing I would like to point out is that these Cooper Tires were apart of a Promotion that Tire Choice Auto Service Centers were running in the Summer of 2020 to buy 3 tires and receive 1 free. For this reason, I do not know how many of these Tires were sold as it felt like they were just trying to get rid of them as they were heavily discounted. I do suspect that these tires were made in the same factories as many that were recalled. These Tires do have a 70,000 mile Warranty and I am currently in the process of trying to get the Tires from Toyota so Cooper can inspect them for a refund. Reference #: [XXX]. The contact stated after driving over a speed bump, the windshield wipers functioned as needed. The dealer was contacted and stated that the vehicle was not included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 13V505000 (Visibility). The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and stated that the VIN was not included in the recall. The contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was 180,000.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-01
- Fire: 1
- VIN: 4T1BF1FKXDU
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: We purchased Toyota Camry in 2013. Currently, it has a mileage of less than 100K. We regularly serviced it at Landers Toyota dealership, and the last maintenance was performed a week before the accident. Driving home from work, my wife heard a bang and felt a jolt after which she was forced to stop. There were no warning signs. The car was filled with smoke and seconds later the flames appeared from underneath the car (luckily, she managed to escape without injuries). I towed the car to the garage for inspection and a large (about 4-5 inches) and wide (about 1 inch) crack was found on the engine. I contacted my insurance rep and the adjustor will inspect the vehicle within 1-3 business days.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-03-13
- VIN: 4T1BF1FK8DU
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: The transmission malfunctioned during acceleration. Toyota acknowledged the defect torque converter was used for 2012 - 2014 Camry. However, the manufacturer refused to repair or replace it because the car haven't been driven during COVID pandemic, and warranty expired. During the acceleration after traffic light or lane merging, the car would shudder, stall, jerk and shake. This could get others or myself killed because the car suddenly slows down or stops. The defect torque converter has been inspected and confirmed by a local Toyota dealer (Bernardi Toyota), but they refused to address voluntarily. There was no warning, or error prior to the failure. It happened suddenly from a few months ago, with ~100,000 miles. So basically, the manufacturer (Toyota) is aware that they sold a defect product, which could get someone killed, but refused to repair or replace it. They just hoped customers didn't drive the cars and let the time lapse, then they are off the hook. I am attaching the documents issued by Toyota, where they acknowledged the defect parts.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-02-14
- VIN: 4T1BF1FK8DU
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: I am sending this msg in regards to my 2013 Toyota Camry SE that I leased and decided to purchase after the lease ended from Toyota Heritage in Catonsville. I am experiencing problems with my torque converter. This is an issue that Toyota knew that would happen to my car and now that I am experiencing this problem Toyota doesn’t feel that they are responsible for the fix since the warranty has expired. I notice this problem in February 2019 when driving to work every morning at the same spot it felt like I was driving on the edge of the road. I figured it was road damage, because it would happen at the same spot every morning curve in the road. On March 16, 2019 due to COVID-19 we were sent home to work from home until Feb 2022. I wasn’t driving my car much due to COVID. We are now back in the office 1 day a week. In July 2022, I had my brakes done by a licensed mechanic and I informed him about the issue I was experiencing and he told me it was my torque converter, his mother has the same issue with her 2013 Camry and Toyota is aware of the problem and not paying for the repair l. In Oct or Nov, I took my car to Heritage Toyota in OM for my usual maintenance and I informed the advisor of the issue and he stated it’s my torque converter and the warranty has expired and I will be responsible for the $2000 repair. I never received the letter they claimed was sent and no one can send me proof of the letter that they was sent to me. I can’t understand how Toyota is not responsible for this problem they knew would eventually would happen and when asked why didn’t they fixed it when I was bringing my car in for maintenance I was told because I did not report there was a problem. I told the advisor it wasn’t a problem then, I am experiencing the problem now. He didn’t have an answer. I even called Toyota Corp and getting the same reply. I am now thinking my transmission is going up due to this issue. Please help me!! Thank you.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-10-25
- VIN: 4T1BF1FK7DU
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: When starting the car in low temperatures, approximately less than 30 degrees Fahrenheit, the ABS, VSC, and BRAKE warning lights remain on after starting. subsequent reading with an OBD reader indicates a C1246 trouble code. Operation of the vehicle without working ABS and VSC systems makes the vehicle inherently less safe and stable. I experienced several episodes of poor braking and skidding when driving in snow or rain before the problem was successfully diagnosed and repaired. The vehicle was serviced by Orland Toyota several times before the problem was able to be reproduced and repaired. A complete replacement of the ABS controller was required.

The hood doesn't have a holder to keep the hood up on its own, the electrical sound blows out and I had to buy more wires and sound system to equip. The day it started tripping, first was when the car didn't start, it made an awful clicking noise. I got a jump it started. I decided to buy new battery; however, the check engine light is on, and check service soon light on. I checked to see if there was any oil, there's no oil. I have me and my friends with me along driving, my friend said, "C car is smoking", I looked in the mirror, oh my God I see white thick smoke from the back. I immediately pull over to look at the problem. I can't drive. I called my insurance to get the car tolled to my home. I called the dealers, I had no good help from him at all. He did the contract the way he wanted, and lenders company to continue to report a fraud contract on my credit report. I have less than time to turn the car back or continue to pay for a broken car. Toyota Camry 2013 recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the Toyota Camry 2013.
- Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
- Components: VISIBILITY:WINDSHIELD WIPER/WASHER:SWITCH/WIRING
- Summary: Toyota Motor Engineering & manufacturing North America, Inc. (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2013-2014 Camry and Camry HV, model year 2013 Avalon and Avalon HV and model year 2014 Corolla vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the windshield wiper switch assembly may short circuit. As such, these vehicles fail to conform to the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard, No. 104, "Windshield Wiping and Washing Systems."
- Consequence: A short circuit could cause inoperative windshield wipers, reducing driver visibility and increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the wiper switch assembly, free of charge. The recall began on November 8, 2013. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331.
- Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Toyota is recalling certain model year 2012-2013 Avalon, Avalon HV, Venza, Camry, and Camry HV vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the drain hose for the air conditioning condenser may become clogged causing water to accumulate at the bottom of the air conditioning condenser unit housing. The accumulated water may then leak through a seam in the housing onto the air bag control module potentially resulting in a short circuit of the module.
- Consequence: A short circuit may cause the air bags to become disabled or inadvertently deploy. An inadvertent airbag deployment can increase the risk of injury or the possibility of a crash. An inoperative airbag can increase the risk of injury in a severe crash. The power steering assist could also become inoperable resulting in increased steering effort and can increase the risk of a crash at low speeds.
- Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will seal the air conditioning condenser unit housing and install a protective cover on the airbag control module, free of charge. The recall began on February 5, 2014. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331.

I have experienced issues with my blindspot monitors twice within the first two years of owning the car. Despite the fact that I specifically chose this feature due to my limited range of motion caused by surgery, the dealer has been unable to resolve the issue. I was disappointed to find out that they did not even inform me of this before I picked up the car. I am curious to know if anyone else has encountered similar problems with their blind spot monitors.

Your 2013 SE V6 Camry is perfect! It's even better than your X5 BMW that consumes a lot of gas.
-
My 2013 Camry SE has only 61,000 miles and unfortunately, the audio system has suddenly stopped working. Despite this setback, I am confident in the quality of my vehicle and will take the necessary steps to address this issue promptly.
-
I was unable to edit my original review from 2013, so I'm adding a separate one for an update. I've had the car for almost 5 years now, with 107,000 km or 66,500 miles on it. Every time I get behind the wheel, it's still a pleasure to drive. Mind you, this is not a performance sedan, but the SE V6 is a great compromise between fun and practicality. I've had absolutely zero mechanical, electrical, or any other problems. I've only been following a maintenance schedule - oil and cabin filters, one transmission flush, just recently changed the rotors and pads, and I'm on my second set of tires. I'm averaging between 21 to 24 mpg in mostly city driving; the best I've had was 29 mpg on a highway trip. There are a few minor annoyances, such as the touchscreen/navigation/entertainment being a bit slow, the cost of a navigation update being ridiculously high (in Canada anyway), and finally, the voice recognition not being great. I have to keep repeating the destination or whatever it is I want to do. The car is very quiet on highways, and with good tires, winter tires are louder, but that's expected. This is absolutely one of the best purchases I've ever made, and I can't recommend this car enough!
-
The SE is a great car for a reasonable price.

We recently had an unpleasant experience with our car during a road trip to Nevada/Utah Canyon lands. Although we never had any issues while using it for short trips, the car struggled to navigate through the mountain ranges and hi desert. As a driver, I found it quite challenging and exhausting. We have decided to trade it in for a Honda Accord Touring, which we believe will be a better fit for our needs. We appreciate Honda's expertise in designing cars that are reliable and efficient.

I can confidently state that I purchased the SE 4 cyl with the expectation of achieving a higher fuel efficiency. However, despite my best efforts to drive with a light foot on the gas and fill it up with the highest octane, I have only been able to achieve an average of 21-22mpg. Even on a long drive from Las Vegas to Southern California, where I purposely filled up the tank and measured it, I was only able to achieve about 400 MPG on cruise control at midnight with no traffic. I have taken the car back to Toyota, but they have been unable to find any issues. Nevertheless, I will continue to follow up with them until we can find a solution to this issue.

This is my first Camry purchase. Although I was not impressed with the cheap carpet in the SE (it shines like cardboard after the first vacuum) and the sub-par seat material, I must say that I am satisfied with the price I paid. The gas mileage is 23.8 MPG, which is not as good as what many other folks are reporting, but it does have the ability to accelerate well for a 4 cyl. I live on a 50 MPH road and the car rarely sees a traffic light. I would caution buyers to be aware of the mileage and interior, but otherwise, it is a nice car. I am hoping it lasts as long as people say they do.

The middle dashboard looks like it was cheaply stuck on, and the upper deck interior/roof seems to be made from a low-quality material, which makes it look and sound hollow. The interior door sides and back mid-console box also appear to be made from cheap materials. Unfortunately, the overall texture of the interior seems to be downgraded compared to my previous Toyota vehicles. I am disappointed. Additionally, the gas mileage is not as advertised on the sticker (25/35..combined 28mpg), as I have only been getting 22.4MPG so far.

I recently purchased a 2013 Toyota Camry, but unfortunately, the car kept stalling out even while driving on the highway. This caused me to almost be involved in a serious accident. Despite my frustration with the situation, Toyota has been working to resolve the issue. After pursuing Lemon Law and having my car inspected by a Toyota Corporate mechanic, I was informed that the issue was due to a faulty design in the fuel tank. Toyota advised me not to fill my tank more than half until a solution to this problem is remedied. Although my claim was denied, I have since moved on and purchased a 2014 Honda Accord, which I am truly loving! I have shared my experience with coworkers, friends, and family members, many of whom have also switched over to the new Honda Accord and are thrilled with their decision. The Accord is a much smoother drive, hugs the road better, and has a plush interior design that makes the car feel very homey.Toyota's interior may feel cheap and have hard plastic, but the Accord offers a more comfortable ride with dual climate control and better fuel economy. Even the base model of the Accord includes numerous safety features, such as hill assist, which Toyota doesn't even offer as an upgrade. If you're considering purchasing a sedan, I highly recommend test driving the Accord before even looking at the Camry. The Camry had to be redesigned 2 years earlier than anticipated for a reason...
