The Toyota Camry (/ˈkæmri/; Japanese: トヨタ・カムリ Toyota Kamuri) is an automobile sold internationally by the Japanese auto manufacturer Toyota since 1982, spanning multiple generations. Originally compact in size (narrow-body), the Camry has grown since the 1990s to fit the mid-size classification (wide-body)—although the two widths co-existed in that decade. Since the release of the wide-bodied versions, Camry has been extolled by Toyota as the firm's second "world car" after the Corolla. As of 2022, the Camry is positioned above the Corolla and below the Avalon or Crown in several markets.

In Japan, Camry was once exclusive to Toyota Corolla Store retail dealerships. Narrow-body cars also spawned a rebadged sibling in Japan, the Toyota Vista (トヨタ・ビスタ)—also introduced in 1982 and sold at Toyota Vista Store locations. Diesel fuel versions have previously retailed at Toyota Diesel Store. The Vista Ardeo was a wagon version of the Vista V50.

Etymology

The name "Camry" derives from the Japanese word kanmuri (ja:冠, かんむり), meaning "crown". This follows Toyota's naming tradition of using the crown name for primary models starting with the Toyota Crown (1955), continuing with the Toyota Corona (1957) and Corolla (1966); the Latin words for "crown" and "small crown", respectively. Maintaining this theme was the Toyota Tiara (1960) named after the "tiara" form of crown. The Atara trim level name used on the Camry in Australia since 2011 means "crown" in Hebrew. The rebadged Camry variant for Japan, the Toyota Scepter (1991)—took its name from "scepter", a royal accessory to a crown.

The Toyota Camry 1994 is known for its reliability and durability, but like any car, it has some common problems that owners have reported.

One of the most common problems with the Toyota Camry 1994 is poor gas mileage. This issue can be caused by several factors, including a faulty oxygen sensor, a clogged fuel filter, or a malfunctioning mass air flow sensor. If the fuel injection system is not working correctly, it can also lead to poor gas mileage. The owner of the car in question reported that after taking the car to a local shop for major maintenance work, the gas mileage dropped from 22+ mpg to 15 mpg, which is a significant decrease.

Another common problem with the Toyota Camry 1994 is noise coming from the engine when accelerating. This issue can be caused by a variety of factors, including a faulty catalytic converter, a damaged exhaust manifold, or a malfunctioning ignition system. The owner of the car in question reported hearing a noise coming from the engine when accelerating after taking the car to a local shop for major maintenance work.

A third common problem with the Toyota Camry 1994 is noise coming from the rear (muffler side) when accelerating. This issue can be caused by a faulty muffler or a damaged exhaust pipe. A fourth common problem with the Toyota Camry 1994 is noticeable engine vibration when the car reaches 3000 rpm, especially in low gears. This issue can be caused by a variety of factors, including a faulty engine mount, a damaged drive shaft, or a malfunctioning transmission. The owner of the car in question reported experiencing noticeable engine vibration when the car reached 3000 rpm, especially in low gears, after taking the car to a local shop for major maintenance work.

A fifth common problem with the Toyota Camry 1994 is a faulty cooling system. This issue can be caused by a variety of factors, including a damaged radiator, a faulty thermostat, or a malfunctioning water pump. The owner of the car in question reported experiencing engine overheating and steam coming from the exhaust after using a temporary repair solution to seal a crack in the cooling system.

A sixth common problem with the Toyota Camry 1994 is a malfunctioning transmission. This issue can be caused by a variety of factors, including a faulty torque converter, a damaged transmission fluid line, or a malfunctioning transmission solenoid. The owner of the car in question reported experiencing a drop in fuel efficiency and a loss of overdrive and second gears after the transmission solenoids became damaged.

In summary, the Toyota Camry 1994 is known for its reliability and durability, but like any car, it has some common problems that owners have reported. VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2012-06-11
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: AT NOON ON 6/11/12, I WAS UNABLE TO SHIFT MY CAR'S GEARSHIFT OUT OF PARK. I REMOVED THE TAB THAT COVERS THE GEARSHIFT RELEASE BUTTON ON THE SHIFT PANEL AND UNLOCKED THE SHIFTER. I IMMEDIATELY DROVE THE VEHICLE TO MECHANICSVILLE TOYOTA (MECHANICSVILLE, VA) AND HAD THE PROBLEM ASSESSED BY THE SERVICE PERSON, [XXX]. SHE SAID SHE HAD SEEN THIS PROBLEM BEFORE AND THE CHANCES WERE PRETTY HIGH THAT THE BRAKE SWITCH (ABOVE THE BRAKE PEDAL) WAS DEFECTIVE. SHE SAID THAT CAUSES THE GEARSHIFT TO LOCK UP AND FOR THE BRAKE LIGHTS NOT TO WORK. INDEED MY BRAKE LIGHTS WERE NOT WORKING AT THAT TIME. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT COULD NOT REPAIR THE VEHICLE AT THAT TIME BECAUSE THEY DID NOT HAVE THE PART (BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH). I PAID FOR, AND ORDERED, THE SWITCH AND ARRANGED FOR THE REPAIR TO BE DONE ON WEDNESDAY, JUNE 13, 2012 AT 10AM. [XXX] WARNED ME TO BE CAREFUL AS I DROVE THE VEHICLE HOME SINCE THE BRAKE LIGHTS WERE NOT WORKING. MY HOUSE IS APRX. 7 MILES FROM THE DEALERSHIP SO I CAREFULLY DROVE TOWARDS HOME. AS I TURNED OFF OF THE MAJOR HIGHWAY ONTO THE SECONDARY ROAD THAT GOES TO MY HOUSE, MY RIGHT ANKLE WAS ACHING SO I USED THE CRUISE CONTROL TO TAKE ME TOWARDS MY HOUSE AT 45MPH. AS I APPROACHED MY TURNOFF, I DEPRESSED THE BRAKE, BUT THE CAR DID NOT SLOW DOWN AT ALL! QUICKLY THINKING ABOUT WHAT [XXX] HAD SAID ABOUT THE BRAKE SWITCH, I THOUGHT TO DISENGAGE THE CRUISE CONTROL. THERE WAS AN IMMEDIATE THUD SOUND FROM THE FRONT OF THE CAR AND THE BRAKE IMMEDIATELY ENGAGED AND STOPPED THE CAR. HAD I NOT DISENGAGED THE CRUISE CONTROL, I AM CERTAIN I WOULD HAVE EVENTUALLY LOST CONTROL OF THE CAR AS IT APPROACHED TRAFFIC, AHEAD. I HAVE MORE COMMENTS BUT THE SYSTEM WON'T ACCEPT THEM. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR

AFTER THE PUBLICITY REGARDING LATER YEAR MODELS, I FINALLY REMOVED THE FLOOR MAT ENTIRELY AND HAVE HAD NO FURTHER EPISODES. I AM CONCERNED THAT THIS HAPPENED IN MY 1994 TOYOTA CAMRY, BUT THE RECALL HAS INVOLVED ONLY 2007 AND LATER MODELS. THE FLOOR MAT SAYS "CAMRY" ON THE FRONT. ON THE BACK IT SAYS "LEFT HAND." UNDER THAT IT SAYS "00208" WITH A SPACE, FOLLOWED BY "32921". TO THE RIGHT OF THIS IS A GRID WITH YEARS 94, 95, AND 96 EACH FOLLOWED BY 12 SQUARES. THE YEAR 94 WITH THE FIRST BOX HAS A DOT IN THE MIDDLE, PRESUMABLY MADE IN JANUARY 1994. BELOW THIS IT SAYS "GB 6" THE MAT HAS BECOME STIFF OVER THE YEARS SO THAT THE RIGHT SIDE, INCLUDING THE AREA NEAR THE GAS PEDAL, DOES NOT LIE FLAT ON THE FLOOR, ALLOWING IT TO EASILY RIDE ON TOP OF AND PRESS DOWN ON THE GAS PEDAL. *TR

Negative 1994 Toyota Camry car reviews

I purchased this Camry from the original owner with approximately 85,000 miles on it. Despite my religious maintenance schedule, I encountered several issues after reaching 98,000 miles. The window motors required replacement, each costing around $250-$300. Additionally, the antenna and stereo malfunctioned, with repair costs totaling around $200-$250. Finally, the transmission failed, necessitating the replacement of the front and rear end seals, driver brake hoses, and shocks. While the repairs were costly, I have continued to drive the Camry due to financial constraints. Although I was surprised by the issues that arose after 98,000 miles, I remain confident in the overall reliability of the Camry.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it brand new back in 1994, and while it was under warranty, I had a few issues with the power windows and the side mirrors. The dealership was great and replaced them for me. I also had to replace all four GOODYEAR tires before 30000 miles due to some cracks that couldn't be fixed. After the warranty expired, I had a couple more issues with the windows, but I was able to get them fixed for a cost of 313.00 each. Overall, I've had a pretty good experience with my car. How about you? Have you had any issues with your car?

It sounds like you made a great choice with your first car! It's always exciting to have a reliable car that's ready to go whenever you need it. The peppy acceleration is a nice touch, especially for a family car. It's great to hear that the car handles well and looks good too. Overall, it sounds like an excellent car for anyone. And even with a V6, the fuel economy isn't too bad!

Your Toyota has been such a dependable car! It has never left you stranded, even though you have done oil changes and maintenance, including belt changes, regularly. You can really feel the quality from the factory in the way it drives and the confidence it gives you. It has treated your family so well!

Purchased a 4-cylinder car in the summer of 2006 with 67,000 miles. Currently, in the spring of 2007, it has 88,000 miles. The only issues I had were with the EGR and a minor distributor oil seep, but both were fixed. The car is reliable, quiet, comfortable, and requires low maintenance. It also has good gas mileage. I make sure to keep up with regular maintenance. The distributor did fry at 85,000 miles, but otherwise, there have been no issues. I plan on keeping and driving this car until the wheels fall off or the engine wears out, which will probably be at around 300,000 miles or so!!!

Update: Five days later, the thieves stole all the parking marker lights, the taillights, the headlights, the drive shifter and my dashcam, and other parts to make the car not street legal. This is the first and LAST time I buy a Toyota product for that very reason. I buy the car to drive, not to have a roving parts store in front of my job and apartment. The Camry is too high on the most-stolen list and I should have known better, but now my faith in humanity is very low and I will TRUST NO ONE. DO NOT BUY A USED CAMRY, YOU ARE ASKING TO HAVE IT STRIPPED OR STOLEN. ------------------------------------------ What a great car this 1994 Camry is. Once the lease was up on my new car, I decided to make a clean break and start over with a well running, older car without all the bells and whistles, without all the distracting gadgets. I encountered a really nice, white 1994 Toyota Camry with a fair amount of miles on it, but the price was fair for the condition and it drove beautifully. Unlike my other (new) car, visibility improved by 50%. No huge pillars blocking the side view. No sharp angle on the rear window blocking the rear view. Overall, the car is just that--a car--unremarkable, plain, simple and elegant in its uncomplication. It goes from A to B in all kinds of weather, I can see everything, so it feels like a well-insulated go-cart. Rain, cold, snow and ice are no problem, and unlike a new car, I can put snow cables on my Camry and chew up the snow and ice like butter, because the clearance is there between the wheel and the strut. 14

I recently traded in my '96 4Runner for a '94 Camry wagon. The fuel efficiency and monthly payment were much better, and I have to say, I don't miss my 4Runner as much as I thought I would. The Camry is an absolute joy to drive, especially with its zippy 6-cylinder engine. Surprisingly, the wagon still accommodates a large load without sacrificing any cargo space. I purchased it from a small used car dealership, and it had been well-maintained with only 81,000 miles on it. I'm excited to put another 2 or 3 hundred thousand miles on it, especially since I've read that the 6-cylinder engine in this model is one of the best ever made.
