2016 Toyota Camry problems
The Toyota Camry (/ˈkæmri/; Japanese: トヨタ・カムリ Toyota Kamuri) is an automobile sold internationally by the Japanese auto manufacturer Toyota since 1982, spanning multiple generations. Originally compact in size (narrow-body), the Camry has grown since the 1990s to fit the mid-size classification (wide-body)—although the two widths co-existed in that decade. Since the release of the wide-bodied versions, Camry has been extolled by Toyota as the firm's second "world car" after the Corolla. As of 2022, the Camry is positioned above the Corolla and below the Avalon or Crown in several markets.
In Japan, Camry was once exclusive to Toyota Corolla Store retail dealerships. Narrow-body cars also spawned a rebadged sibling in Japan, the Toyota Vista (トヨタ・ビスタ)—also introduced in 1982 and sold at Toyota Vista Store locations. Diesel fuel versions have previously retailed at Toyota Diesel Store. The Vista Ardeo was a wagon version of the Vista V50.
Etymology
The name "Camry" derives from the Japanese word kanmuri (ja:冠, かんむり), meaning "crown". This follows Toyota's naming tradition of using the crown name for primary models starting with the Toyota Crown (1955), continuing with the Toyota Corona (1957) and Corolla (1966); the Latin words for "crown" and "small crown", respectively. Maintaining this theme was the Toyota Tiara (1960) named after the "tiara" form of crown. The Atara trim level name used on the Camry in Australia since 2011 means "crown" in Hebrew. The rebadged Camry variant for Japan, the Toyota Scepter (1991)—took its name from "scepter", a royal accessory to a crown.

STRUCTURE,LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-29
- Number Of Injuries: 1
- VIN: 4T1BF1FKXGU
- Components: STRUCTURE,LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES
- Summary: While loading groceries in my trunk, the torsion bar sheared off and broke (the hook part). It fell hard on my shoulder (fortunately not my neck or head). I have never seen steel actually break rather than bend. I tried to fix it but could not. Trunk is heavy and unstable (falls easily), as is part of car in back. Went to Toyota dealer and found out no recall, and "iffy" fix. They wanted $488.50 to try and fix. My body shop estimated $164. and purchased correct Toyota parts, followed their instructions. The bars only held for a few minutes, then they failed to hold up the trunk again. I was almost injured again with this failure, but managed to catch it in time. They refunded me $100. since they said there was no more "play" to work with. Went on social media only to find that many Toyota Camry 2016 and 2015s had torsion bar failures, with no recall. Some said that they spent over $1000. trying to fix it, but never could, no matter what dealership or body shop repaired it. Others gave up and sold it. It is not something that I can "live with". the trunk is heavy to life and unstable. Have to hold it while trying to put things in trunk. I have had 6 Toyotas in my life and 3 cars with Auto Nation, but have never had the lack of integrity, follow-through and non-solutions that I have experienced with the purchase of this car. Unlike others, I can't afford to sell/replace my car at this time, and can't live with it as is. I truly love my car, but do not feel safe using it and am totally frustrated. All I want is for Toyota and/or its mfr.) to own up to the design flaw and either fix or replace it. Note: I have photos of broken part, failure, and estimates, but couldn't get them to download onto your form. (It just kept deleting the form and having me start over). Please advise if I can send another way.

STEERING,AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-11
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 4T1BF1FK1GU
- Components: STEERING,AIR BAGS
- Summary: Vehicle- 2016 Toyota Camry As I was making a slight turn on the highway, my steering wheel began to sparatically veering left and right, which resulted in me hitting a curb, not once but twice. Due to the heavy impact and harsh involuntary, out of control steering the airbag should have deployed. However, it failed to do so. Instead, only the "airbag light" came on my dashboard along with warning lights that had not been there prior to accident.
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-01
- VIN: 4T1BF1FK5GU
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: Erratic steering issue related to weak car battery. I have a 2016 Toyota Camry XLE. The car began pulling to the left then to the right while driving down a straight and even road. The car would then resume normal steering for a minute or two, then the erratic steering behavior would resume for several minutes. In addition, the steering wheel would not return to center after making left or right turns. This steering issue would begin 1 - 5 minutes from the start of a trip a continue throughout the journey. This issue has been reported by many other Camry owners in several online automotive related repair sites with each person describing these same steering issues. They stated that the problem was resolved when they replaced their car battery. I decided to replace my 4-year-old True Start battery with a new DieHard Platinum battery from Advance Auto Parts and had them install it a week ago. Since then, the steering issue has not returned, and I consider this issue resolved.
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-20
- VIN: 4T4BF1FK3GR
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: I was on the highway during traffic hour going approximately 40 mph at 2 rpm and when I tried to accelerate to keep up with the flow of traffic, the car did not accelerate and actually slowed down and suddenly shifted down below 1 rpm which caused the oncoming cars behind me to hit their brakes hard. After it slowed down and did not accelerate, even though I pressed the gas pedal further, it suddenly shifted to 3.5 rpm and bolted forward towards the vehicle slowing down in front of me causing me to slam the brakes. It felt as if there was a disconnect between the transmission and the engine. Nothing popped up on the dashboard. This continued twice more before I pulled over and restarted the car to see if would help and it sort of did for about 10 miles before occurring once more before I reached my destination, so I pulled over and checked it on my OM126p and it showed no faults in the system. I then took it to the mechanic the next day and the car was fine the mechanic cleared the vehicle and said it was probably due to a clogged fuel filter and I have an appointment with them in hopes of fixing this problem. Now I’ve read into the problem and it seems to be a recurring problem and there’s been countless situations like mine in which the safety of both I and others on the road have been put at great risk. Please look into the problem on the off chance it isn’t a problem with filters. Please look after the safety of everybody on the road. Thank you.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-06-16
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 4T1BD1FK6GU
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: I parked my Toyota Camry Hybrid on my sloped driveway, and it wouldn't turn off, change gears, no response when gas pedal pressed. I called my insurance to tow it and while I was waiting, I tried to open the trunk to remove items. It wouldn't open, but somehow, I was able to get it into neutral thinking perhaps I could open the trunk. Not so. The car started rolling down the drive, bottomed out at the end, rolled across the street into a ditch. Fortunately, the ditch stopped it form hitting the 2 cars across the street and their house. It was still running. The neighbors all arrived to see me sobbing. The men tried to turn it off, but no luck. The insurance company totaled it because the frame was bent. I hadn't had my car very long and I was devastated. It was still drivable and I had to keep driving it even though the mechanic I took it to told me not to. The mechanic looked it over and could find no reason for the issue. I eventually found a used Toyota Avalon in silver, but not the beautiful sparkly red of the Camry. It made it onto America's Funniest Videos, but it's not funny. I tried to attach the video my Ring took, but I can't get it to attach. If you'd like to see me running down the driveway chasing it I can send you the video another way. It's on TikTok. Fortunately, I wasn't able to get into the car or the door would have flattened me. Sorry the pics are sideways. That's the way they loaded.

STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-24
- VIN: 4T4BF1FK2GR
- Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: This 2016 Toyota Camry LE developed a steering problem. Initially, the steering pulled mildly to the left when the car was cold. This resolved after 5 minutes of driving. My mechanic could find no problem with the steering. Eventually (2 weeks) the steering would additionally intermittently pull moderately to the right. This was not reproducible. If I did not hold the wheel firmly, the car would turn off the road or across the lane to the right. Within one week the car would became difficult to start. Two days later the battery failed completely. Replacing the battery totally corrected the steering problems. I conclude that the failing battery could not adequately power the electric motors in the power steering. This was the first sign of a failing battery. I had never heard of this before. There was no warning light. I believe that such an unusual sign of a failing battery should be publicized as an important warning for all cars with electrically controlled power steering.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-06-16
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 4T1BD1FK6GU
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: My car would not turn off, change gears out of park into drive or reverse, no reaction when the gas pedal was pushed. It was part way into the garage on an inclined driveway. I called my insurance company to have a tow truck help. I got out of the car to try and open the trunk and get my shopping out of it, but the trunk would not open either. I thought perhaps if I put the car in neutral it might open, but instead it rolled down the driveway, bottomed out at the end of the driveway, rolled across the street and crashed into the ditch. Thank goodness it hit the ditch because it was headed toward the neighbor's cars and house. It was still running when it stopped in the ditch! The neighbors all came out and tried to turn it off without success. The frame was bent, the rear end of the car was smashed and the insurance company said it was totaled. My car had been in perfect condition. I have since spoken with others who know of friends who have had the same issue. One person left their car running all night until it ran out of gas.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-02-13
- VIN: 4T1BD1FK3GU
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Just at 70,000 miles a service light came on. After checking I found the oil was very low, about 2 quarts. I took it to the dealer for the oil change on 10/17/2022 and the service tech said that the hybrids use (burn) a little oil. That seems excessive to me. I just check my oil and it is a quart low with 3800 miles after the last oil change. Could have been burning oil for some time and didn't know it due to the fact I always took it to the dealer for the oil changes. They never said anything about the car burning or using oil, There is no leak as no oil in my driveway and on the engine. I'm afraid it might lock up on me when I on the road and could cause me to wreak.

- Summary: My car when I driving lose power and in seconds the rpm come highly and make my car dangerous because accelerated when I don’t use the gas pedal
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-09-10
- VIN: 4T1BK1FK7GU
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: Roof and sunroof structures began making continuous loud "popping" noises, very startling and distracting to driver and passengers. Toyota is aware of the problem, it involves the structure of the sunroof mating to the structure of the vehicle roof. This defect has existed since at least the 2007 model year, and Toyota published official guides for Toyota dealer repair procedures. Toyota refused the procedure due to my vehicle being out of its 3 year/36,000 mile warranty, instead quoting around $1600 for the repair. The popping noises are very loud, similar to a rock hitting the windshield. This startles the driver and causes the driver to jump and lose focus. This is a very well-known defect and Toyota is hiding behind the fact that it usually begins after the warranty period is expired. Toyota should cover its repair.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-11-01
- VIN: 4T1BF1FK3GU
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: I have taken my car into the dealership twice now to be looked at for transmission issues. There’s a delay in acceleration and shifting gears. It struggles to move quickly when needing to get out of the way of any potential danger. This lack of responsiveness is dangerous and reported on many Toyotas as something “normal” and as such, the dealership says they can not replicate the problem.
SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-04-30
- VIN: 4T1BD1FK9GU
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
- Summary: I was stopped at a traffic light, on an uphill grade, for roughly thirty seconds when my 2016 Toyota Camry Hybrid just started slowly accelerating. I looked down and my foot was still on the brake. The car then accelerated quickly. I turned into the left hand turn lane in order to avoid hitting the vehicle in front of me. The car then jumped the center divider and slam in the curb on the other side of the street before it stopped. At no time did I take my foot off the brake. There was only minor damage to the front bumper, but I destroyed two plants in the center divide. (I do not know, as of yet, if there was any damage to underneath of car.) As I was less than two miles from home, I drove the vehicle home. The next business day I had the vehicle towed to the Toyota dealership in San Juan Capistrano, CA. I told them of the problem and they immediately notified corporate. Corporate TOOK possession of the car and did not issue its report until June 1, 2022 (31 days after the incident).

Negative 2016 Toyota Camry car reviews
Positive 2016 Toyota Camry car reviews

This is the third edition of my review after 21 months with the car. Few of my opinions and experiences with the car have changed. It's mostly great: a Camry with probably good reliability, overall cost management, decent comfort and perks, and fine driveability. There's a lot to like. I don't regret buying the car and I'm sure it will serve us well for a long time. However, I owned a 2003 Camry and at 185000 miles gave it to my son. It's now well over 200 K and I recently drove it, which only verified my impressions of the new car. Here's what I miss/don't care for in the new one. Firstly, the six-speed transmission shifts all the time, even at the slightest hill, which can be irritating and may shorten the life of the transmission. If you live in a place with rolling hills, it's going to drive you a little crazy. Secondly, the front seats aren't quite as comfortable, but the back seat is more comfortable. At the time of purchase, Accord seats felt bad from the beginning. But had I known this would be a problem in the Camry on long trips, I would have shopped a couple of other equivalents. Otherwise, it's just fine. (UPDATE - at around 4 years I thought the power steering was going out. The car pulled to one side and steered erratically. While I was preparing to spend big money, I saw a post that low battery voltage could cause this. I replaced the battery and the problem was solved. I'm glad for that, but that's a pretty lame engineering and safety issue. And it's a setup for someone to be taken advantage of by some unscrupulous mechanic and/or Toyota Dealer service dept.)It can be difficult to find a comfortable position in the driver's seat, especially on long trips. Additionally, the interior storage spaces are not as spacious or well-designed as in previous models. The double center console, roomy open tray in front of the shifter, large glove box, large door pockets, and pull-out drawer to the left of the steering wheel have been replaced with a cheaper-feeling alternative. The instrument panel can also be challenging to adjust, as the button to brighten or darken it is located behind the steering wheel. While the car now has a cartridge filter instead of a spin-on oil filter, this will require a new tool once the warranty expires. The foot pedal handbrake is not as useful as the previous handbrake for extra control in bad weather. The extra info screen between the tach and speedometer is a great addition, but it can make the current instrument panel feel cramped and busy. The lighting from the touchscreen and shift lever can also be glaring at night. Lastly, while the They presented this perk in a way that didn't match reality or the owner's manual. However, to their credit, the service manager came back out to say they would cover it, still justifying a longer interval. But in the end, they did cover it. Additionally, there is a 1-2 MPH discrepancy between the speed on the speedometer and the speed on the info screen. Lastly, the seat fabric shows dirt and stains easily.

The Camry has been a very impressive car. Although I have a 2.5 simpler motor SE without the Entune, I have found the radio to be very good along with a decent Bluetooth. It rides smooth and very quiet. I have to admit, I am impressed. I traded in an E 350. I miss the weight and AWD security option, but other than that, it is simple, reliable, and impressive.
-
I've owned eleven Camry's since 1990. My family and friends often ask me why I keep choosing the Camry. Don't you want to try something new? But my answer is always the same: the Camry fits my lifestyle perfectly in terms of looks, reliability, and value. It's simply the best. I must also say that my new 2016 Camry SE is one of my all-time favorites. So while some people might think I'm a bit boring and predictable, I like to think I'm very wise.
-
I've been driving my Camry SE for nearly a year and 3 months now, and I must say I'm impressed with the fit and finish. It's very quiet, with no rattles, squeaks, or road noise, unlike my previous Prius. However, I do have a few suggestions for improvement. At $26K, I feel that blind spot and rear air vents should come standard. Additionally, I wish the back lights had more lights, such as LED stripes, to give it a more modern look. It's a shame that the SE no longer has fog lamps, and the halogen DRL looks dated on a modern car. They should come standard on all models, and the SE needs fog lights. I've noticed that the ride is harsher on the SE model than the LE or XLE, and my Bridgestone tires have worn out faster than expected. The dealer said they had to replace early 2015's because the tires were wearing too fast, but he didn't mention the brand. If I get the 2018 model, I'm considering upgrading to the XLE for the softer ride, since I mostly drive in the city. I'm not sure if I want a hybrid again, it depends on gas prices in 2018. Overall, I really like the car for its room, comfort, and non-hybrid mpg (averaging 26.2mpg).
-
I'm thrilled to share that this is my third Toyota Camry! My first one was a '91 Camry V6 LE, which remained in perfect condition even after a major accident. The second one was a '98 Camry LE, which I drove for over 200K miles and it's still in working condition. Unfortunately, when I tried to trade it in at Arlington Toyota, IL, they only offered me $200, so I decided to give it to my sister-in-law instead. This new Camry is for my daughter and she absolutely loves it! Our family now owns three Toyotas: an '06 4Runner for my wife, an '06 Solara for me, and the new Camry for my oldest daughter. I also want to give a shoutout to Edmunds for their excellent service. I brought my Edmunds quote to the dealer and most of them welcomed it, except for Grossinger Toyota of Licolnwood, IL. However, I believe this was just an isolated incident with a single salesperson. Overall, I give Toyota and Edmunds an A++ for their outstanding services!

Hi there! I noticed that you purchased a 2016 LE about 2 months ago and have driven 3000 miles since then. It sounds like you've had a mixed experience with it so far. While it seems to provide basic transportation and good room for 4 adults, it's a shame to hear that the stereo isn't up to par and the rear doors sound cheap when closed. On the bright side, it's great that you're getting 32 mpg, at least according to the computer! I understand that you were used to Hondas before and may be disappointed with the CVTs. It's interesting to hear that several of your co-workers have the same car. Overall, it seems like your experience has been less than thrilling. Is there anything else you'd like to share about your experience with the car?

You've got a nice car at a reasonable price! However, I noticed that the front seats don't raise enough for me at 5'9. Also, the stereo system in the LE model sounds like a portable radio. I had a Camry LE years ago, and the stereo system sounded like it belonged in a midsize car with a nice sound. Unfortunately, the sound on this system is not very good with the radio and CD player.

Driving in the sunshine can be a challenge in this car as the visors are too short to block the sunlight effectively. Additionally, the console is pushed back, making it difficult to access while driving. However, the safety features such as multiple airbags are reassuring. While the car may not be perfect, it still has its merits. Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

It's great to hear that you're considering this car! While it may not be the most impressive car out there, it's definitely dependable and comes at a great price. We think it's a solid choice!

Hello! As a Toyota fan who has owned three Toyotas in the past, including a 4Runner and two Camrys from 1995 and 2005, I recently purchased a 2016 Camry SE. Unfortunately, I have not been very satisfied with my purchase. The car is quite noisy and doesn't drive as smoothly as my older models. I can feel every little bump on the road, and my traction control constantly comes on. Additionally, the horsepower is lower than in previous models, and the carpet and door handle feel cheap. Overall, I feel like I'm driving a 2008 Scion TC (which I used to own), with the only difference being that the Scion had more power. I'm disappointed in the quality of this Toyota. I'm already looking into trading in the 2016 Camry for something that drives smoother. I should also mention that the steering wheel feels slippery and not as tight and firm as my older Camry, and the car shifts from right to left on windy days. However, I'm hopeful that I'll find a car that better suits my needs. Thank you for listening to my experience!
