2002 Toyota Camry problems

The Toyota Camry (/ˈkæmri/; Japanese: トヨタ・カムリ Toyota Kamuri) is an automobile sold internationally by the Japanese auto manufacturer Toyota since 1982, spanning multiple generations. Originally compact in size (narrow-body), the Camry has grown since the 1990s to fit the mid-size classification (wide-body)—although the two widths co-existed in that decade. Since the release of the wide-bodied versions, Camry has been extolled by Toyota as the firm's second "world car" after the Corolla. As of 2022, the Camry is positioned above the Corolla and below the Avalon or Crown in several markets.

In Japan, Camry was once exclusive to Toyota Corolla Store retail dealerships. Narrow-body cars also spawned a rebadged sibling in Japan, the Toyota Vista (トヨタ・ビスタ)—also introduced in 1982 and sold at Toyota Vista Store locations. Diesel fuel versions have previously retailed at Toyota Diesel Store. The Vista Ardeo was a wagon version of the Vista V50.

Etymology

The name "Camry" derives from the Japanese word kanmuri (ja:冠, かんむり), meaning "crown". This follows Toyota's naming tradition of using the crown name for primary models starting with the Toyota Crown (1955), continuing with the Toyota Corona (1957) and Corolla (1966); the Latin words for "crown" and "small crown", respectively. Maintaining this theme was the Toyota Tiara (1960) named after the "tiara" form of crown. The Atara trim level name used on the Camry in Australia since 2011 means "crown" in Hebrew. The rebadged Camry variant for Japan, the Toyota Scepter (1991)—took its name from "scepter", a royal accessory to a crown.

Common 2002 Toyota Camry problems

The Toyota Camry is a popular vehicle known for its reliability, but like any car, it has its share of common problems. This article focuses on the 2002 Toyota Camry and its common issues based on complaints from owners.

  • Leaking Head Gasket: This generation of Camry sometimes has problems with a bad head gasket design that causes serious issues. Symptoms include smoke coming out from under the hood, dirty coolant, white smoke coming out of the tailpipe, and engine failure. Regular inspection of oil and coolant is advised to catch this problem early.
  • Hard Shifting: Many '02-'06 Camry owners report experiencing the transmission jerking while shifting gears. Reflashing the ECU may fix the problem, but if it doesn't, the transmission will need to be rebuilt or replaced.
  • Deteriorating Rear Speaker Covers: The plastic Toyota used to manufacture the rear speaker covers eventually cracks or crumbles after prolonged exposure. Replacing the speaker covers as soon as possible is the best solution.
  • Brake Issues: Some owners have reported issues with the braking system, including the brake pedal sinking all the way to the floor or becoming stiff, and the car shaking when brakes are applied. If you suspect a brake issue, it's crucial not to continue driving the vehicle and to take it to a repair shop for a proper diagnosis.
  • Starter Failure: One of the most reported Toyota Camry problems stems from starter failure. The majority of no-start issues can be resolved by replacing the battery, alternator, or starter. However, sometimes cleaning the connections or repairing the ignition system/fuel system will do the trick.

These common problems should be considered when purchasing a used 2002 Toyota Camry. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent or catch these issues early, ensuring the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-24
  • VIN: JTDBE32K520
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Toyota dealer contacted me; said my car will cost $15000 to fix. He said people at Toyota who has my exact car costed $15000 to fix! it’s known in automotive circles this year make model & engine size has this factory defect of the rear head studs stripping out and becoming loose. This causes combustion failure of the head gasket and engine block. The cylinder heads will be warped & cracked. Engine won’t hold coolant! Gauge jumps to H after brief attempt at combustion. Replacing the head g. Cylinder heads or engine block is insufficient due to the factory defect . only a total engine replacement has worked for past owners at $15000 if Toyota dies it. A mechanic said if u can fine like a 2006 lower miles engine & get mechanic to instal maybe $2000, that’s $4000. Bridgetown automotive in my area said at the very minimum in a discounted price it will be $8000. He said only a totally rebuilt engine or a new one put in will work. I’m seeking Toyota to give me a new car that doesn’t have this issue. People posting at blogs said they spent the $2200 to disassemble their engines as the auto places told them it was definitely their head gaskets causing coolant. once opened though, it was found their head gaskets were fine. The issue was , from factory, the head studs had stripped out and were loose. This, according to engine experts is total engine failure. Only replacing everything can fix this.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-05-15
  • VIN: 4T1BF30K62U
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: My passenger side dash airbag is bloating and tearing at the seam. It is available for inspection. I am concerned that it will continue to add pressure and eventually deploy. It seems unsafe for passengers -would it work properly in the case of an accident? And for myself as the driver, it would certainly startle me while driving if it deployed by itself. I took it in to get serviced and was told it would need to be replaced. The cost will be around $1600. I haven’t had my insurance inspect it, is that something that is recommended? I tried to contact Toyota but never heard back. I don’t have any warning lights on, and I noticed the issue starting in the past year. I have found threads of other Toyota Camry in the same car age range with owners that are having/had the same issue. These threads mentioned it happening around 40,000 miles, and that aligns with my car too. - I also have a friend that has the same issue with her Camry airbag!

Negative 2002 Toyota Camry car reviews

  1. Samson Schimmel 2024-10-11

I was disappointed with my recent purchase of a Camry as I experienced several issues within the first two months of ownership. Despite having to take it in for repairs eight times, the rear suspension, overhead light, and door handles continued to make noises. Although Toyota explained that the delay between pressing the accelerator and the car moving was due to signal processing by the central computer, I found this concerning in emergency situations. Additionally, the soft brakes required me to apply more pressure than expected. As a result, I have decided to sell my Toyota and explore other options in the future.

  2. Torrance Ryan 2024-09-07

This is the first Toyota I have owned. I have previously driven Honda, Chrysler, Dodge, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick, Mercedes, and Volvo. Unfortunately, I have not had a great experience with this car. There seems to be a defect with the driveline that the dealer refuses to fix, claiming that it meets factory specifications. Additionally, I find the styling to be bland and the handling to be mushy at highway speeds. I was also disappointed with the power output of the V6 engine, which was less than that of smaller engines I have driven. It's worth noting that Toyota does not offer roadside assistance unless you purchase the extended warranty. However, I remain hopeful that Toyota will address these issues in future models. I have been driving my Camry for 6 years without any major issues until I hit 90k miles. However, my check engine light came on due to an engine issue. Despite the dealership's reassurance that it was not a big deal and that the EVAP system was not an issue, I decided to have the whole engine drained and cleaned. Unfortunately, the light came back on just 50 miles later. I then took my car to an independent service provider who confirmed that something was not right. At 130k miles, the engine pistons shot through the casing into the combustion chamber, which could have easily started an oil fire that would have sparked into the gas chamber. Based on my mechanic's assessment, it appears that Toyota has a serious engine design problem. This issue is not isolated, and a quick Google search for 'Toyota engine issues' will confirm this. It is important for Toyota to address this issue before it causes any more harm.

I purchased this car brand new in 2002 and it currently has around 103,000 miles. Unfortunately, I have had some issues with it. The rotors had to be replaced under warranty due to warping and have had to be turned several times since. Additionally, I have gone through three batteries in less than seven years. Recently, the car has been running rough at around 40 mph. The dealership initially could not find any issues, but on the second visit they discovered a bent right front axle. On the third visit, the diagnosis was a problem with the transmission O/D. The radio has also been problematic and the keyfob sometimes unlocks the doors for only 15 seconds before locking them again. Despite these issues, I am hopeful that the car will continue to serve me well.

I recently purchased a used 2002 Toyota Camry with 130,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, the car had some issues, including burning oil frequently and needing a quart of oil every 600 miles. After only two months of ownership, the transmission failed and I had to junk the car. I was only able to get $500 for it. While this experience was frustrating, I have had better luck with other car brands in the past, such as my Chevy Cavalier which lasted me 13 years and over 200,000 miles.

Positive 2002 Toyota Camry car reviews

This Camry is the most reliable vehicle we have ever owned. We've had Ford, Chevrolet, and Chrysler vehicles before, but now I am completely convinced that Toyota is the best value. We purchased it new in 2002 and I still drive it every day. It has 210,000 miles on it and we just replaced the catalytic converter and an oxygen sensor. Our mechanic believes the car will run soundly for several more years. This car had absolutely no mechanical issues until it was over 12 years old. We did replace the timing belt when suggested, as per scheduled maintenance. Only once has it failed on the road, and that was due to the alternator in the 13th year, which is to be expected. If we have spent more than $5000 in repairs over the last 16 years, I would be surprised. We have replaced the brakes twice, the battery twice, replaced a chip in the air conditioning system once ($10.00 from Autozone), repaired (not replaced!) the exhaust system twice, replaced the alternator once, and now the catalytic converter and oxygen sensor. I generally still get about 24-25 mpg. I am considering shocks/struts, since I've decided to keep the car a few more years. I'd like to add that we are not good about vehicle maintenance and still the car performed well. The one thing I do not like about that car is that the seats are not deep enough, but for this kind of reliability, I will put up with that. Update 12/19/18...I am still driving this car. Last year, we replaced the catalytic converter because our mechanic assured me the car still had several years of life. Under that same advice, I replaced the shocks and ac/heater blower motor this year. The car has 220,000 miles on it and our mechanic feels I should be able to drive it for another 30 to 40,000 miles.

I purchased the car with 80k miles on it and have driven it for just over a year, adding 27k miles to the odometer. I am happy to report that I have had no issues with it whatsoever. I have only needed to perform standard maintenance such as oil changes, tire rotations, and replacing the front brake pads. This is actually my second Toyota car, as I had previously owned a long line of GM cars that were unfortunately plagued with issues. GM should take note - if they build reliable vehicles, customers will come. While this car may not be the most exciting to drive, it is incredibly dependable. It may not have all the bells and whistles, but it certainly delivers 100% reliability.

This car has been one of our all-time favorites, and we are now in our 70s. It's very comfortable on long or short trips.

When I first purchased the car, I wasn't too thrilled with the styling. I was hoping for something sportier and faster, but this was the best option within my budget. However, once I started driving it, I fell in love with the car. The vvti engine provides quick acceleration while also achieving 30+ miles per gallon. Everyone who has driven my car has really enjoyed it too. It has been a very reliable car, except for some transmission issues that started to arise around 120,000 miles. It seems that this is a common problem with this year's model, so it's something to be aware of. Overall, it's been a great car.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it back in 2013 with 114k miles on it, and now in 2016, it has 258k miles! I'm happy to report that I haven't had any major issues with it, except for having to replace the radiator about a year and a half ago. It's currently burning oil, but considering it's a 2002 and I drive a lot, I think it's holding up pretty well. Thanks for listening!
