  • Summary: I was driving my 2006 Toyota Camry on a level residential road at 35 mph and stopped at a red light. Upon turning left, the car unexpectedly accelerated at a high speed. I stepped on the brakes but the car did not stop nor slow. I was driving towards a very busy intersection. I tried to shift the gear to park, but the car was still running out of control. I turned left onto a side street in order to avoid the intersection. I was going too fast and jumped the curb, crashed into a Toyota Tundra truck parked on the driveway, and ricocheted into the retaining wall of the neighboring property. I was wearing my set belt, the airbag deployed and hit my chest. There were long tire marks on the street and a witness reported the squealing sound of brakes. Paramedics and police arrived immediately. My blood pressure was checked and I was advised to go to the ER. In the hospital, I was checked for reflexes, stroke and heart problems and got a X-ray of my chest. Everything was ok and I was sent home after 5 hours, although my chest was severely bruised and painful for about 2 weeks. It took me a month to drive again. I kept thinking about what caused the accident. I am certain that mine was a case of sudden unintended acceleration. While there were over 7 million Toyota cars subject to unintended acceleration recalls from 2005-2012, my 2006 Toyota Camry was not included in these recalls.

  • Summary: Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC (SET) is recalling certain 2005-2011 4Runner, Highlander, Sequoia, and Sienna, 2005-2010 Avalon and Tundra, 2006-2008 Camry Solara, 2006-2010 Highlander hybrid, 2006-2011 Rav4 and Tacoma, 2007-2010 FJ Cruiser, 2007-2011 Camry hybrid, 2009-2010 Venza, 2010-2012 Prius, 1988-1990 and 2005-2010 Camry, and 1989 and 2009-2010 Corolla vehicles equipped with aftermarket accessory seat heaters with a copper strand heating element. The electrical wiring in the seat heaters may be damaged when the seat cushion is compressed.
  • Consequence: If damaged, the copper strand heating element may short circuit, increasing the risk of a fire.
  • Remedy: SET will notify owners, and dealers will disconnect the seat heaters, free of charge, and refund the purchase price of the seat heater accessory. The recall began on July 14, 2016. Owners may contact SET customer service at 1-866-405-4226. SET number for this recall is SET16B.

  • Consequence: Damage to the seat heater wiring could cause the wires to short, increasing the risk of the seat burning and causing personal injury to the occupant.

    Hey there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share some thoughts with you before you make a purchase. Firstly, the car looks great and drives like a dream. The build quality is top-notch too! However, there are a few things that I think you should know about. For instance, I found it hard to get comfortable while driving as I was always reaching for the wheel. Additionally, the blinkers are not loud enough, so I often forget to turn them off. The speedometer is also a bit tricky to read as it's marked at 20, 40, 60, 80 etc. To see 55 or 45mph, you've got to mentally interpolate. Lastly, the gas mileage is not as advertised. It's supposed to be 24/34, but I've never gotten over 23mpg. I know these may seem like small things, but they can really add up. I just wanted to make sure you were aware of them before making a decision. Let me know if you have any questions!

    The car's transmission can be a bit jerky at low speeds. If you slow down to 8-10 mph, like at a yield, and press the gas normally, the car may jerk hard as it downshifts from second to first. It's similar to a young kid learning to drive a clutch. However, the bigger issue arises when passing on the freeway. Sometimes, when you see a gap and floor it, nothing happens for 3-5 seconds. This may be due to the fact that the gas pedal is no longer connected to the engine by a cable, but rather controlled by a computer. Interestingly, my 99 Camry with 160,000 miles had better throttle response and shifted smoother than this car does!

Before purchasing, I compared it to 4 other cars, including a newer version of a model I had previously owned and loved. So far, the mileage has exceeded my expectations, and I'm still breaking it in. The interior is spacious, although headroom is a bit tight due to the moon roof in this model. The car is just as quiet as my wife's Lexus ES 330, but the ride is slightly stiffer. The instrument layout is well-designed, and the leather interior is fantastic.     I'm only 18, but I've already owned three cars in my life: a 1993 300zx, an '07 Rav4, and my most recent car, an '06 Toyota Camry. All of them are awesome cars in their own right, but the Camry is the most comfortable and probably the best-built car that 2006 had to offer. With 80,000 miles on it, this is the only car I plan on keeping until it dies (which, at the rate this car is going, will probably be long after my children have passed away from old age). The car drives just as well as it did when I drove it off the showroom floor, and it doesn't rattle or make any noises whatsoever. This car will happily cruise at 90 all day long. =)

With my family's history of owning Toyota's and Toyota's reputation for quality, I'm confident that it will be a great investment.

With its peppy V6 and good handling, it's no surprise that you're getting gas mileage in the high 20's. This top of the line XLE is so well equipped that it could have been a Lexus!
