2018 Toyota Camry problems

The Toyota Camry (/ˈkæmri/; Japanese: トヨタ・カムリ Toyota Kamuri) is an automobile sold internationally by the Japanese auto manufacturer Toyota since 1982, spanning multiple generations. Originally compact in size (narrow-body), the Camry has grown since the 1990s to fit the mid-size classification (wide-body)—although the two widths co-existed in that decade. Since the release of the wide-bodied versions, Camry has been extolled by Toyota as the firm's second "world car" after the Corolla. As of 2022, the Camry is positioned above the Corolla and below the Avalon or Crown in several markets.
In Japan, Camry was once exclusive to Toyota Corolla Store retail dealerships. Narrow-body cars also spawned a rebadged sibling in Japan, the Toyota Vista (トヨタ・ビスタ)—also introduced in 1982 and sold at Toyota Vista Store locations. Diesel fuel versions have previously retailed at Toyota Diesel Store. The Vista Ardeo was a wagon version of the Vista V50.
Etymology
The name "Camry" derives from the Japanese word kanmuri (ja:冠, かんむり), meaning "crown". This follows Toyota's naming tradition of using the crown name for primary models starting with the Toyota Crown (1955), continuing with the Toyota Corona (1957) and Corolla (1966); the Latin words for "crown" and "small crown", respectively. Maintaining this theme was the Toyota Tiara (1960) named after the "tiara" form of crown. The Atara trim level name used on the Camry in Australia since 2011 means "crown" in Hebrew. The rebadged Camry variant for Japan, the Toyota Scepter (1991)—took its name from "scepter", a royal accessory to a crown.

Common 2018 Toyota Camry problems
The 2018 Toyota Camry has been known for several common problems based on complaints from owners, which include transmission issues, brake problems, and engine-related concerns.
Transmission problems are one of the most prevalent issues, with many owners experiencing rough shifting, hesitation during acceleration, and a sluggish response when trying to pick up speed. These problems seem most noticeable at low speeds and in stop-and-go traffic. Despite some dealerships attempting software updates, the issues persist for many drivers, leaving them frustrated and concerned about safety.
The 2018 Camry has also received numerous NHTSA complaints regarding its service brakes, leading to a potential safety hazard for drivers. Numerous owners have reported a "Low Braking Power" warning message on their dashboards, often accompanied by a significant reduction in braking performance. Sometimes, the brakes have failed to respond adequately, even when the pedal is fully depressed, resulting in collisions. Despite a recall addressing the brake assist problem, many vehicles still face issues.
Engine-related problems have also troubled the 2018 Camry, causing frustration and worry for many owners. Problems include stalling and hesitation during acceleration, rough idling, and excessive smoke, all of which have affected the vehicle's performance and safety. Some owners have even experienced loss of power while driving, putting them at risk of accidents.
In addition to these issues, the 2018 Camry has had recalls related to a faulty fuel pump, which could cause the engine to stall while driving, and transmission software glitches that can lead to stalling and rough shifting. These issues can potentially pose safety risks, particularly if they occur at high speeds on crowded highways.
While the 2018 Toyota Camry has faced these common problems, it is still considered a reliable car with a solid reputation. However, it is essential for potential buyers to be aware of these issues and consider them when making a purchasing decision.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

- VIN: 4T1B31HK9JU
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: On hot days, fuel vapor escapes from the gas tank's filler pipe and condenses and pools inside the fuel access door. The area around the car smells of gas. Sometimes it runs down the side of the car and drips on the ground. This has ruined the paint. We can't put the car in the garage because of the smell, and we are concerned that in an accident there could be a fire. We don't know what part has failed. Toyota installed an upgraded gas cap, but leak is still happening. The safety risks are breathing of gas fumes in and around the car, and the increased risk of fire in an accident. We kept a detailed log of the conditions under which this happens, and shared the log and also video recordings with Freeman Toyota near us in Santa Rosa California. We left the car with them for two hot days (XXX 2024) and they were able to reproduce the problem. The leakage is noticeable only in hot weather, so we first observed the problem in the summer of 2020. Below I have entered the most recent date when we observed the problem (with the upgraded gas cap): [XXX]. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

We bought this car in September of this year, and it was a bit of a random purchase. We were at the dealership for my wife's 2013 Corolla maintenance service when we saw the car and fell in love with it. Toyota really outdid themselves with this model of the Camry. It's a very comfortable ride, and the 4-cylinder engine is surprisingly powerful. The handling is great on tight corners, and the cabin noise is minimal, although it can be a bit loud when speeding on the freeway. Unfortunately, the Toyota App can be quite annoying. It asks you to connect to your cellphone every single time you start the car, and the Bluetooth connection is poor. You also have to register for every single music app, and I'm not sure why it keeps logging me off. I can't use Pandora directly from the app, so I just use the app on my phone. The GPS app requires a USB connection, which is very inconvenient and feels outdated. The center console material is a dust magnet and looks quite cheap. I have OCD, so I have to wipe it off every single time to keep it from getting dusty and smudged. Unfortunately, the car is currently in the dealership to check the moon roof, which keeps squeaking and can be quite distracting while driving.

I'm currently in the process of replacing my leased 2016 Camry SE Special Edition with a 4cyl auto. I test drove the Camry LE 4cyl with an 8 speed auto and while the ride was comfortable and quiet, I found the shifting and drive ability of the 8 speed transmission to be not to my liking. The acceleration was fine, but cruising on the highway seemed dead with throttle response slow unless you mashed it to the floor. I reset the MPG display to zero and the car did obtain 31mpg. However, on the same highway, at the same speed, my 2016 gets 42mpg. Also, the throttle response is far superior on my 2016. Further, I found the Entune radio system to be terrible. On my 2016, the Scout GPS could not be made to work and it is still the same on the 2018 I tested. My 2016 Camry is the very best car that I've ever had in over 50 years of driving. However, although the 2018 is a nice car overall, I won't be getting one. I like it, but I don't love it. UPDATE 5/18/18: I test drove an LE 4cyl and reviewed it here. I was somewhat critical of the 8 speed transmission and gas mileage. I was replacing my 2016 Camry SE and in the review said that I liked the 2016 better. However, after driving and pricing much of the competition, I just couldn't pull the trigger on any of them. So, I decided to take another look at the 2018 Camry. This time I drove the SE version with a 4 cyl. I took it for a very long test drive on the interstate as well as in the town where I live. After that drive, I concluded that I was too hasty in my evaluation/review and that my objections about the transmission being sluggish, was more of my getting used to the 8 speed over my old 6 speed. In this test drive, I found that driving the 8 speed wasn't as objectionable as I previously thought. Yes, on the highway it did downshift frequently when going up an incline, but that's what transmissions are supposed to do to keep up the car's speed. I also found that in town it shifted out of 1 fairly quickly. To me, after driving for an extended time, it wasn't bothersome at all.Hey there! I just wanted to share an update on my review of the car. In my original review, I mentioned that I was critical of the gas mileage and that my 2016 car obtained higher mpg. However, I made a mistake and didn't clear out the old mpg information. This time, I found that the car actually averaged as high as 49 mpg on LEVEL interstate @ 70mph! Of course, the mpg dropped when I encountered hilly sections of highway. Overall, the indicator shows an average of 32.2 mpg with my city driving included. I decided to get the 2018 SE and so far, I have not been disappointed. I've noticed some complaints about noisy engines, uncomfortable seats, poor interior materials, etc. but I personally have not experienced those issues. So, my recommendation is to take a longer test drive under the conditions you normally experience. Hope this helps!

I recently purchased a 2028 Camry XSE with all the options and overall, I'm really happy with it! The only downside is that the Scout navigation requires a bit of setup. To use it, you'll need to have the Scout app on your smartphone and link it to your car. Once you're in the car, simply plug your phone into a USB port and start the app on Entune. If you go out of network, the functionality may be limited until you're back in network. Just remember to unplug your phone and take it with you when you leave the car. If you have a V6 with integrated navigation, you'll be able to see the navigation on the heads-up display. While the app itself may have some room for improvement, it's still a useful tool. It's worth noting that after three years, there will be a subscription fee to continue using it.

I recently purchased this car last month and it has been wonderful! The gearing has been really smooth, although the transmission can be a bit jumpy if you are too quick on the gas upon take off (being an 8 speed auto). I absolutely love the style of the SE (mine is black so it hides those black plastic fins well) and the overall layout. With only 700 miles, I can't comment on long-term reliability but I expect it to be great being a Toyota. The gas mileage has been 25.3 mpg combined so far and I only expect that number to increase. I also love all the safety features including radar cruise and auto high-beams along with RCTA and BSM. For those of you looking at the panoramic sunroof, I wasn't that impressed as it only leaves a 12 inch or less opening if you are actually wanting to open the sunroof. So far the ride and handling has been great on the new TNGA platform and I hope to have this Camry for many trouble-free years to come!

If you're experiencing transmission problems, there's good news! A simple software update to the ECM (Engine Control Module) can fix the issue. The TSB-0330-17 update specifically addresses the problem of 'Shift Shock on Initial Startup or Reacceleration'. The TSB document explains that some 2018 model year Camry vehicles may exhibit a shift shock when shifting from Park to Reverse on initial startup or a delay/shock when reaccelerating quickly after slowing down to a stop or near stop. The Engine Control Module (ECM) (SAE term: Powertrain Module [PCM]) logic has been updated to address this condition. I visited the dealer and had the updated firmware re-flashed to my car, and the difference is noticeable! After a 600 mile one-day trip, my car is now zippy and delivers full power. If you're experiencing jerky transmission or slow acceleration, I highly recommend trying the firmware re-flash to fix the problem at zero cost. You can find the TSB document by googling it. Thanks!

I see that you purchased a 2018 XSE 4-cylinder. It seems like you're experiencing some rough shifts in the morning and low fuel economy. Additionally, it appears that you're not satisfied with the infotainment system, as it's slow and the Entune app is not meeting your expectations. Have you considered updating to Android Auto?

They Crippled Entune 3.0 radio/infomation system in the name of safety. All 3 audio system models have been crippled in more than one way or another. Really love this car except for the entune 3.0 suite. It has been stripped of features. Will not display music grace-note album pics except in park - now feature is worthless. Toyota salesman said it was broken. Could not believe it was now blocked while moving. They specifically restricted pic from phone book except when stopped or in park. It has restricted receipts of emails and text while the car is moving. Now you must spend more time poking on the screen. If you had previous Camrys then you miss these features instantly. Bad move on Toyota's part. See lots of complaints on different boards. Have bought 12 Toyotas in the past 15 years. Now looking at Honda Accord.Toyota is trying to hide this info in its literature and responses to complaints with vague phrases like “some feature are restricted while vehicle is in motion”. The manuals is hard to read so it is hard to find where it states what will actually be “restricted.”

It seems that the transmission in this year's Camry is new. Unfortunately, I found that about 80% of the time, I felt like I was driving in the wrong gear. For example, the car felt like it was in second gear when it should have been in third, and in third gear when it should have been in fourth, and so on. To illustrate this, the tachometer dropped quite a bit after taking my foot off the gas. The shifts were also quite rough, and I have never had a car shift gears on me while on the Interstate. I brought the car in to the dealer to have it looked at when it had around 2500 miles on it, but was told that nothing was wrong. Overall, I was not a fan of the experience. On 4/2/18, I wrote a second review: I ended up trading the car in with only 6000+ miles. I felt unsafe in the vehicle and with the transmission. Although I took a loss, my well-being is more important. That is all I will say...

The Entune 3.0 system could benefit from some improvements, as well as the JBL audio quality. Additionally, the build quality could be better, and the front doors could sound more solid when closing. Unfortunately, my XSE has a loose roof, which requires a complete replacement. The parts alone are close to $4k. However, the car looks great, has excellent fuel economy, and rides and handles well. It's important to note that lifting the driver side wiper to clean or remove snow may cause damage to the paint due to the design. Overall, this purchase has raised some concerns, but the car still has many positive features worth considering.
