Etymology
The name "Camry" derives from the Japanese word kanmuri (ja:冠, かんむり), meaning "crown". This follows Toyota's naming tradition of using the crown name for primary models starting with the Toyota Crown (1955), continuing with the Toyota Corona (1957) and Corolla (1966); the Latin words for "crown" and "small crown", respectively. Maintaining this theme was the Toyota Tiara (1960) named after the "tiara" form of crown. The Atara trim level name used on the Camry in Australia since 2011 means "crown" in Hebrew. The rebadged Camry variant for Japan, the Toyota Scepter (1991)—took its name from "scepter", a royal accessory to a crown.

AS SOON AS I REALIZED WHAT HAD HAPPENED I JIGGLED THE SHIFTER (IT WAS IN D2) AND THE GEAR SEEMED TO RE-ENGAGE AND I CONTINUED DRIVING WITHOUT ANY PROBLEM. THIS HAS HAPPENED A HALF DOZEN TIMES.

- Summary: EVERY TIME THAT THE PASSENGER SEAT IS MOVED FORWARD TO ALLOW PASSENGERS IN OR OUT THE AIR BAG LIGHT IN THE VEHICLE STARTS BLINKING. THE LIGHT WILL BLINK FOR AROUND 15 DAYS BEFORE IT SHUTS OFF IF THE PASSENGER SEAT IS NOT MOVED FORWARD FOR PASSENGERS DURING THAT TIME. THE NEXT TIME THE PASSENGER SEAT IS MOVED FORWARD FOR PASSENGERS, THE CYCLE STARTS OVER AGAIN.

IN ADDITION, ALL THE WARNING LIGHTS ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL ILLUMINATED AND ONLY THE CHECK ENGINE WARNING LIGHT REMAINED ILLUMINATED. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT THE STEERING WHEEL SEIZED. AS A RESULT, THE CONTACT WAS INVOLVED IN A CRASH. THE DETAILS OF THE CRASH WERE NOT AVAILABLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED UNKNOWN INJURIES THAT REQUIRED MEDICAL ATTENTION. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 109,000.

THE ACCELERATOR CABLE HOUSING COULD BE DEFORMED AT THE CRUISE CONTROL ACTUATOR-TO-THROTTLE BODY CONNECTION. THE ACCELERATOR INNER-CABLE COULD WEAR AWAY AND EVENTUALLY BREAK.
- Consequence: THIS COULD ALLOW THE THROTTLE TO RETURN TO IDLE OR REMAIN IN ITS MOST RECENT POSITION REGARDLESS OF ACCELERATOR PEDAL OPERATION, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE ACCELERATOR CABLE. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN FEBRUARY 23, 2001. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-800-331-4331.

I came across my 1999 v6 American Edition Camry in early 2007 with 88k and it was a deal I couldn't resist. Before that, I had never considered a Toyota. Since then, I have put 110k of my own miles on it and it has been with me through college, marriage, and the birth of our two kids. Despite its boring looks, I absolutely LOVE my Camry. The v6 engine keeps driving interesting and the reliability is unbeatable. It gets an acceptable 26 mpg no matter what I do - highway, city, pedal to the floor, or with my wife and kids in the car.

Hi there! I wanted to share with you that my 1999 Toyota Camry with a 6-cylinder engine and manual transmission has been an absolute joy to own. It has already clocked over 302,000 miles and I'm confident it will keep going strong. Interestingly, my previous Toyota Camry, a 1987 model, managed to reach an impressive 387,000 miles before it was unfortunately involved in an accident. I'm hoping to surpass that milestone with my current car and reach over 400,000 miles! Thanks for listening.

Superb quality! Everything in the interior is where it should be and works very easily. The power is adequate (4 cyl), but I have to say, the seats... Did anybody actually sit in one for several hours before finalizing the seat design? I love the car, but unfortunately, I won't be able to take it on a long trip because of the seat.

Back in 2003, my dad purchased this car with only 10,000 miles on it. Over the years, we have taken care of the basics and it still runs like new, maybe even better! I recently added some performance parts, such as a cold air intake, racing plugs, and new struts. This car has never let us down and even with 218,000 miles on the odometer, anyone driving or riding in it would think it's a brand new car.
