The Toyota Camry (/ˈkæmri/; Japanese: トヨタ・カムリ Toyota Kamuri) is an automobile sold internationally by the Japanese auto manufacturer Toyota since 1982, spanning multiple generations. Originally compact in size (narrow-body), the Camry has grown since the 1990s to fit the mid-size classification (wide-body)—although the two widths co-existed in that decade. Since the release of the wide-bodied versions, Camry has been extolled by Toyota as the firm's second "world car" after the Corolla. As of 2022, the Camry is positioned above the Corolla and below the Avalon or Crown in several markets.

In Japan, Camry was once exclusive to Toyota Corolla Store retail dealerships. Narrow-body cars also spawned a rebadged sibling in Japan, the Toyota Vista (トヨタ・ビスタ)—also introduced in 1982 and sold at Toyota Vista Store locations. Diesel fuel versions have previously retailed at Toyota Diesel Store. The Vista Ardeo was a wagon version of the Vista V50.

Etymology

The name "Camry" derives from the Japanese word kanmuri (ja:冠, かんむり), meaning "crown". This follows Toyota's naming tradition of using the crown name for primary models starting with the Toyota Crown (1955), continuing with the Toyota Corona (1957) and Corolla (1966); the Latin words for "crown" and "small crown", respectively. Maintaining this theme was the Toyota Tiara (1960) named after the "tiara" form of crown. The Atara trim level name used on the Camry in Australia since 2011 means "crown" in Hebrew. The rebadged Camry variant for Japan, the Toyota Scepter (1991)—took its name from "scepter", a royal accessory to a crown.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2011-10-25
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • VIN: 4T1SK12E7NU
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: ON THE AFTERNOON OF OCTOBER 25, 2011, I DECIDED TO RUN THE ENGINE OF MY TEENAGE DAUGHTER?S 1992 TOYOTA CAMRY. THE CAR HAD BEEN STORED IN A COVERED AREA, AND NOT DRIVEN, SINCE AUGUST 15, 2011. BECAUSE THE BATTERY WAS CONNECTED, I FELT I SHOULD RUN THE ENGINE FOR A SHORT PERIOD. I UNLOCKED AND OPENED THE DRIVER DOOR AND SAT ON THE EDGE OF THE DRIVER SEAT WITH THE DOOR OPEN. MY INTENTION WAS TO START THE PARKED CAR AND LET IT RUN FOR A SHORT PERIOD (SEVERAL MINUTES) IN ORDER TO CHECK AND CHARGE THE BATTERY. IN ORDER TO PLACE THE KEY IN THE IGNITION, I PLACED MY LEFT ARM ACROSS THE TOP OF THE STEERING WHEEL, AND LEANING ACROSS THE FRONT OF THE STEERING WHEEL, INSERTED THE KEY IN THE IGNITION. UPON TURNING THE KEY IN THE IGNITION (1/4 TURN-THE ENGINE DID NOT TURN OVER), THE DRIVER AIR BAG EXPLODED AND THE CAR FILLED WITH BLACK SMOKE. THE IMPACT OF THE BAG HIT ME IN THE STERNUM, ACROSS THE CHEST AND LEFT CLAVICLE WITH THE FORCE OF THE BAG EXPANSION HITTING ME IN THE SOFT TISSUE OF MY NECK, THROAT AND UNDER MY JAW. I WAS THROWN BACK AGAINST THE SEAT AND MY GLASSES WERE THROWN INTO THE BACK SEAT OF THE CAR. THE FORCE OF THE IMPACT BROKE THE BUTTONS ON THE FRONT OF MY POLO SHIRT AND CAUSED THE NECKLACE I WAS WEARING TO CUT MY THROAT. I SUFFERED CHEMICAL BURNS ON MY FACE AND CHEST FROM THE SODIUM AZIDE. I HAVE A PERMANENT SCAR ON MY NECK. INITIALLY MY HEARING AND SWALLOWING WERE ADVERSELY AFFECTED. THE IMPACT HAD A BLAST AND ?STUNNING? EFFECT. I HAVE HAD CORRESPONDENCE WITH TOYOTA CORPORATE SEVERAL TIMES OVER THE LAST FEW MONTHS. THEY ARE REFUSING TO OFFER ANY COMPENSATION FOR INJURIES AND HAVE ADMITTED FAULT BASED ON THE REPORT OF THEIR ENGINEER, WHO EXAMINED THE VEHICLE. THEY HAVE OFFERED TO "BUY BACK" THE CAR ($2500) IN EXCHANGE FOR A HOLD HARMLESS AGREEMENT SIGNED BY ME. I FIND THEIR OFFER UNACCEPTABLE. *TR

Negative 1992 Toyota Camry car reviews

  1. Peyton Fahey 2024-10-18

This car has been magnificent in reliability!

  2. Nigel Langosh 2024-06-20

After only 7 and a half days, the car caught on fire and caused a lot of inconvenience, including towing fees and registration costs. Despite my attempts to get a refund, I was unsuccessful. This experience has left me with serious concerns about Toyota's safety standards. I cannot help but think about what could have happened if my daughter was in the car. While some may argue that this was an isolated incident, I have decided that I will not be purchasing a Toyota again.

I bought this car over a year ago for $2,500, and it has been the best car I have ever owned. It had 113,000 miles on it when I bought it. Now it has about 135,000 miles on it, and it is still going strong. I have driven it all the way to Texas and back (from Alabama), and I would trust it to take me anywhere. I have only had to replace the front struts and an O2 sensor. Other than that, I've only had to perform routine maintenance on it. The total amount of money spent on maintenance is less than $500. I'll take that over a monthly car payment any day. It rides great, is super comfortable, and I wouldn't trade it for most anything. And no, it's not for sale. :)

You're going to love this story! We bought this car for my teenage son as his first car, and it's been such a great ride. It had 217K miles on it when we got it, but the lady we bought it from had bought it new and put three teenage girls through it as their first car. She even had all of the maintenance records, and was so sad to see it go when we drove away. Since then, I've done some work on it, like putting on new brakes, struts, and stabilizer links, but nothing major. And you know what? It just keeps on ticking!

Your 92 Camry SE V6 sounds like an amazing car! With 130,000 miles and still in great shape, it's clear that it's been well taken care of. The SE body style is very sporty and the paint job is fantastic. It's great to hear that it's been extremely reliable and provides a fantastic ride on the open road. It's understandable that you wish Toyota still made them like this. It's a shame that your '97 Camry doesn't quite live up to the quality of your 92 Camry SE V6.

I've owned 15 cars in 30 years, ranging from Minis to Mercedes, but this one beats them all. This is my second V6 Toyota, and the first one lasted for 245,000 miles. The comfort is superb, the V6 power is effortless, the ride is smooth, and it's always reliable. In my opinion, this is the best body shape of all the models, and it's a shame they changed it.
