The Toyota Camry (/ˈkæmri/; Japanese: トヨタ・カムリ Toyota Kamuri) is an automobile sold internationally by the Japanese auto manufacturer Toyota since 1982, spanning multiple generations. Originally compact in size (narrow-body), the Camry has grown since the 1990s to fit the mid-size classification (wide-body)—although the two widths co-existed in that decade. Since the release of the wide-bodied versions, Camry has been extolled by Toyota as the firm's second "world car" after the Corolla. As of 2022, the Camry is positioned above the Corolla and below the Avalon or Crown in several markets.

In Japan, Camry was once exclusive to Toyota Corolla Store retail dealerships. Narrow-body cars also spawned a rebadged sibling in Japan, the Toyota Vista (トヨタ・ビスタ)—also introduced in 1982 and sold at Toyota Vista Store locations. Diesel fuel versions have previously retailed at Toyota Diesel Store. The Vista Ardeo was a wagon version of the Vista V50.

Etymology

The name "Camry" derives from the Japanese word kanmuri (ja:冠, かんむり), meaning "crown". This follows Toyota's naming tradition of using the crown name for primary models starting with the Toyota Crown (1955), continuing with the Toyota Corona (1957) and Corolla (1966); the Latin words for "crown" and "small crown", respectively. Maintaining this theme was the Toyota Tiara (1960) named after the "tiara" form of crown. The Atara trim level name used on the Camry in Australia since 2011 means "crown" in Hebrew. The rebadged Camry variant for Japan, the Toyota Scepter (1991)—took its name from "scepter", a royal accessory to a crown.

Common 2000 Toyota Camry problems

The Toyota Camry 2000 is a popular car, but it has some common problems based on complaints from owners. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues:

  1. Hesitation on acceleration: This problem is often caused by a software issue, and Toyota has released a software update to address it. However, if the car has high mileage, it may be a mechanical issue. In this case, the first step is to check the transmission fluid for dirt, rust, or chunks of metal, which could indicate a leak. If there is a leak, it will need to be fixed and the transmission fluid replaced.
  2. Oxygen sensor: The oxygen sensor in the 2000 Toyota Camry can malfunction, causing rough idle, hesitation under acceleration, and poor overall engine performance. This issue can be resolved by replacing the oxygen sensor.
  3. Power steering leak: The power steering system in the 2000 Toyota Camry can develop leaks, which can cause the power steering fluid to leak out. This issue can be resolved by replacing the power steering hose or the power steering pump.
  4. Valve cover gaskets: The valve cover gaskets in the 2000 Toyota Camry can develop oil leaks over time, especially in the V6 engine. This issue can be resolved by replacing the valve cover gaskets.
  5. Taillight harness: The taillight harness in the 2000 Toyota Camry can become damaged or corroded, which can cause the taillights to malfunction. This issue can be resolved by replacing the taillight harness.
  6. Heater blower motor resistor: The heater blower motor resistor in the 2000 Toyota Camry can malfunction and fail prematurely. This issue can be resolved by replacing the heater blower motor resistor.
  7. Water pump: The water pump in the 2000 Toyota Camry can develop cooling leaks, especially in four-cylinder engines. This issue can be resolved by replacing the complete timing component kit.
  8. Starter motor: The starter motor in the 2000 Toyota Camry can malfunction when the vehicle reaches or exceeds 150,000 miles. This issue can be resolved by replacing the starter motor.
  9. Interior door handles: The interior door handles in the 2000 Toyota Camry are made of plastic and can break over time. This issue can be resolved by replacing the interior door handles.
  10. Alternator: The alternator in the 2000 Toyota Camry can develop charging problems between 150,000 and 200,000 miles. This issue can be resolved by replacing the alternator.

These are some of the most common problems reported by owners of the 2000 Toyota Camry. If you own one of these cars and are experiencing any of these issues, it's important to have the car inspected by a qualified mechanic to determine the cause and the best course of action. Regular maintenance and inspections can also help prevent these issues from occurring in the first place.

Negative 2000 Toyota Camry car reviews

  1. Roberto Kovacek 2024-09-06

Although my car has some limitations, I believe it has a lot of potential. The power seat adjusts in 4 ways, which may not be ideal for everyone, but it is still a useful feature. The power is adequate for my needs, and while the fuel economy could be better, it is still acceptable for a 4-cylinder car. The road noise can be a bit loud at highway speeds, but this can be easily remedied by turning up the radio. Overall, I am satisfied with my car and believe it has a lot to offer.

We all know the history of the Camry - solid, if unexciting, performance coupled with legendary Toyota reliability. However, I'm disappointed to say that my confidence in Toyota has been shaken. Unfortunately, at just over 80,000 miles, the engine on our Camry seized, and it's likely that 'oil gel' or sludge is the culprit. Even following the manufacturer's recommendation of 7,500 miles between oil changes was insufficient. So, we're left with a car that we thought had another 100,000 miles in her, but now it's essentially a junk car. I suppose I'm a Honda man now.

I leased the car for 2 and a half years. Unfortunately, on the very first day, it broke down on me. However, the dealership was able to replace the back suspension unit, although they accidentally cut the wire on my speaker, which put me in an awkward situation. While I tried to declare it as a lemon, I had no such luck. Since then, my experience with the car has been less than pleasant. Although the customer service is good when it comes to changing the oil, they refuse any responsibility when it comes to more serious issues. They turn you down with a smile. The car is quite noisy and has been giving me trouble, making me feel unsafe at times. I had to replace both front struts 5000 miles ago. Additionally, the MPG is an exaggeration, as I have never been able to achieve the promised amount.

This car has been with me for almost six years and it has been a great ride. As my college car, it has probably endured more abuse than most, especially in the scorching Nevada desert with temperatures exceeding 115 degrees. I appreciate its reliability and with regular maintenance, it still runs like new even at 140k miles. Although it's at the age where more problems tend to arise (such as bad cam/crank seals, timing belt, transmission, power window regulator, and brakes), I believe any car would experience the same. The fuel economy does worsen with the age of the car, but that's to be expected. Unfortunately, they don't make Camrys like this anymore, or else I would buy a 2010 model. My next purchase will be a 2010 Ford Fusion; I hope it will be as good to me as my Camry has been.

I can say that we bought one good car. We purchased the car certified in April of 2003 for just under 13,000, and 36,000 miles. After a year and a half, we have not had a single problem. The car is reliable, but we are looking for a bit more excitement. The V6 was probably the fastest in its class for 2000. The suspension is a little bouncy, and the interior is a little ugly compared to the Celica. Toyota could have a better car than the Passat all around. However, I would definitely buy another one. It is the best car I have ever bought when it comes down to the money. The sound system is awesome, even though it is not the JBL version.

Your Toyota Camry has been incredibly reliable, requiring no repairs other than regular maintenance until now, at nearly 170,000 miles. Not many other car manufacturers can boast that level of dependability. Although the transmission finally went out, you were able to replace it with a low mileage transmission from a wrecked model and now it's running like new again. Even though the engine light has been on for nearly 6 years, there have been no problems. It's great to hear that you're looking forward to driving your Camry until it reaches 300,000 miles. When the time comes, you'll definitely be buying another Toyota Camry!

I love driving my Camry. I've owned a Rav4 and a Celica, and while sporty is my style, the Camry has been the best for me. I gave up sporty for reliability, but I still have my sporty Volvo convertible. I'm happy with both car choices!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my Toyota. I bought it brand new and it's been such a reliable car. I only had to put in a new set of brakes at 75000 miles and an oxygen sensor at 72000. Other than that, it's just been regular service intervals and one set of tires. It doesn't even use any oil! I'm so impressed with the quality of Toyota's manufacturing. This is actually my 8th Toyota and I have to say, it's one of the best ones I've owned. By the way, I also have a 2006 Avalon. Take care!

I bought the car used with more than 70,000 miles, and it has been a very reliable and trouble-free car. The powerful V6 engine delivers a lot of power even when climbing hills and mountains--lots of torque.

This is my first Toyota, but it definitely won't be my last. I absolutely love my Camry! It was a tough decision between the Camry and the Accord, but I'm so happy I went with the Camry. I'm really glad I got all the options because I use them all!
