The Toyota Camry (/ˈkæmri/; Japanese: トヨタ・カムリ Toyota Kamuri) is an automobile sold internationally by the Japanese auto manufacturer Toyota since 1982, spanning multiple generations. Originally compact in size (narrow-body), the Camry has grown since the 1990s to fit the mid-size classification (wide-body)—although the two widths co-existed in that decade. Since the release of the wide-bodied versions, Camry has been extolled by Toyota as the firm's second "world car" after the Corolla. As of 2022, the Camry is positioned above the Corolla and below the Avalon or Crown in several markets.

In Japan, Camry was once exclusive to Toyota Corolla Store retail dealerships. Narrow-body cars also spawned a rebadged sibling in Japan, the Toyota Vista (トヨタ・ビスタ)—also introduced in 1982 and sold at Toyota Vista Store locations. Diesel fuel versions have previously retailed at Toyota Diesel Store. The Vista Ardeo was a wagon version of the Vista V50.

Etymology

The name "Camry" derives from the Japanese word kanmuri (ja:冠, かんむり), meaning "crown". This follows Toyota's naming tradition of using the crown name for primary models starting with the Toyota Crown (1955), continuing with the Toyota Corona (1957) and Corolla (1966); the Latin words for "crown" and "small crown", respectively. Maintaining this theme was the Toyota Tiara (1960) named after the "tiara" form of crown. The Atara trim level name used on the Camry in Australia since 2011 means "crown" in Hebrew. The rebadged Camry variant for Japan, the Toyota Scepter (1991)—took its name from "scepter", a royal accessory to a crown.

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-04-26
  • VIN: 4T1BE32K23U
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
  • Summary: Having purchased w 2003 Toyota Camry 2.4l, (with good paint, no rust, great interior, and new clear headlights) 3 days prior, the previous owner reported no current issues. The check engine light come on the 3 rd day as I drove away from the DMV having just titled it. AC was blowing cold, no other dash lights were on and I couldn't feel any apparent issues driving, so I proceed to my place of employment, where a friend whom is an independent mechanic had the machine to read check engine codes. I never made it. Had driven approximately 25 miles and came to a full stop for a red light. Upon turning green and beginning to accelerate, my Camry's engine died and would not start. When the key was turned it made no noise at all. Towed to a mechanic shop, I was asked if it had overheated, it had not. Without investing further and me acquiring a diagnostics charge, he said one apparent issue was the fact that there was absolutely no coolant in the engine. Dumfounded I had ittowed home where another Mechanic friend (licensed) was going to see about reapiring it. One of the code//errors read, was that the was no combustion, the radiator was full, but there was no traces of coolant in the engine, when took of the engine mainfold right away he noticed 3 cool packs that were damaged, as well as what appeared to be a used head gasket poorly installed, and worse if all the timing chain had jumped and made a mad mesh nightmare to the engine...so previous owners obviously sold me their night mare, I now am stuck with either replacing the engine (not) or bring carless once again.?? Note: Contacted the acclaimed christian, God fearing sellers, whom I paid $4000 and they kindly refunded me $1000, as they stated it was no fault of theirs ..

Negative 2003 Toyota Camry car reviews

  1. Braulio Mitchell 2024-09-18

I bought the car from a dealer. Unfortunately, the car needed the starter and fan system replaced just 2 days after purchase. Additionally, the car runs really hot and oil is seeping out of the engine. Although this Toyota has 103,000 miles on it, I expected better quality. It's worth noting that there is a known issue with Camrys from 2002-2006 with the headbolts stripping off the engine block, causing the engine to overheat and potentially blow at any given time. While Toyota has not been very supportive, I still believe in the brand and hope for a resolution. If I could go back in time, I would have considered other options. Overall, my experience with this car has been frustrating, but I remain hopeful for a positive outcome.

  2. Marcelino Herzog 2024-05-14

This car is a great choice for families, with plenty of space and a comfortable ride. While it may not be the most exciting car on the road, its reliability is top-notch. The seats could be a bit more comfortable, but overall it's a solid choice.

Positive 2003 Toyota Camry car reviews

  1. Deon Marquardt 2025-01-04

I've had this car for 3 years and drive 70 miles a day to work. All I've needed to do is regular oil changes and general maintenance. I haven't experienced any breakdowns, and the car runs just as well as it did when it was new. I did have to check the brake linings again recently, but even after 100,000 miles, there was still 1/3 of the original pads left. I've never had this happen with any other car, so I'm really impressed with this one!

  2. Kade Parker 2024-11-22

After 205,000 miles, I am still amazed every day by how great this car is. It's comfortable for long trips, and the 4-cylinder engine provides plenty of power for any situation. Plus, it consistently gets 25-27+mpg in the city and 35-38mpg on the highways. I do need to replace a valve gasket and I'm about due for struts, but other than that, it's been trouble-free driving. I fully expect it to easily make it to 300,000 miles.

  3. Marc Haag 2024-11-18

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your car! It sounds like it's a dream to drive, and reliability, ride comfort, and safety are all top priorities for you. It's interesting that you find it to be a better fit for you than the Honda, which seems to be more of a sports car wannabe.

  4. Brenden Gusikowski 2024-11-15

This car is amazing! Even after 60,000 miles, it still runs and looks great. The leather interior shows no signs of wear and tear. I get an impressive 29 miles per gallon, which is a great mix of city and highway driving. The V

engine delivers exactly what I want, when I want it, without any delays. Whenever I think about trading it in, I get in the car and end up asking myself, 'Are you crazy?' I've looked at other cars like the 2007 Lexus, Camry XLE, and Avalon, but none of them compare to this one. The design of the interior, especially the dash and consoles, is top-notch. Plus, it's super low cost to maintain - just change the oil and filter and you're good to go. The paint is in excellent condition and the seats are exceptionally comfortable. It truly rides like a dream!

  5. Dereck Renner 2024-11-06

I owned the car from 2003 until 2009 and put about 80000 miles on it. It was always fun to drive, and I enjoyed the experience. However, I did have some concerns about the tires and suspension, which could cause the steering column to shake if the tires weren't perfectly inflated or the weight on the axles wasn't great. Additionally, the suspension was a bit loose, causing some scratching. Despite these issues, I generally felt safe in my Camry. Although, there were some stubborn moments, possibly due to a bad mechanic at the dealership.
