Etymology
The name "Camry" derives from the Japanese word kanmuri (ja:冠, かんむり), meaning "crown". This follows Toyota's naming tradition of using the crown name for primary models starting with the Toyota Crown (1955), continuing with the Toyota Corona (1957) and Corolla (1966); the Latin words for "crown" and "small crown", respectively. Maintaining this theme was the Toyota Tiara (1960) named after the "tiara" form of crown. The Atara trim level name used on the Camry in Australia since 2011 means "crown" in Hebrew. The rebadged Camry variant for Japan, the Toyota Scepter (1991)—took its name from "scepter", a royal accessory to a crown.

The rear trailing arm body mounts rust to a point that I feel the structural integrity is compromised. At first glance the mount appears intact but after tapping lightly with a small hammer pieces of the mount fall off leaving a large portion of the mount missing. I have attached pictures of the mount before checking the mount and after to show how much of the mount is left. If this mount were to fail it could cause loss of control of the vehicle and a crash.

Unfortunately, I was not made aware of their extended warranty until it was too late. This vehicle has the melting dash problem which has gotten to a "dangerous" level. The glare on the windshield makes it unsafe for drivers and pedestrians who may be in an area which causes them to be obscured. I know this car is older, but my son who is using this as a cheaper method of transportation doesn't drive it much. It only now has 95,000 miles on it and has always been well maintained. The local dealer gave me a price of $2,500.00 to replace this dash. Also, in addition to the vision issue, I assume there will soon be problems with all the electronics contained in the dash area. I'm asking that the Federal Safety Board force Toyota to do the right thing, since they have told me they will not stand behind the produce. One of their representatives told me that with my history ( 8 or 9 new vehicles since 1990), they may make an exception since their extended warranty expired. They declined my request.

- Summary: I was driving on the highway and I smelled something burning towards my left. I looked at my door panel and saw the window switch on fire. I immediately pulled over to the side of the freeway. I opened the door, got out, and attempted to put out the fire. If I did not react fast enough I could have easily have got trapped on the driver side and would have to try to rush out of the passenger side as I wouldn’t have any control of opening the driver door or window. I had no success of extinguishing the fire and then called 911. I answered their questions and they were dispatched. I got lucky and a good samaritan had a fire extinguisher and extinguished the fire. Five minutes later the firefighters showed up. Eventually, the door panel melted to the ground from the heat. Firefighters went through the car to determine if the fire was out. They gave the okay, took my information, and left me with an inspection number. CHP also came by to check on me. He didn’t leave any inspection numbers. The car is available for inspection if need be. The was no warning lamps, messages, etc. I’m not sure if the problem has been reproduced the dealer or independent shop.

This car is fantastic! I have driven it through snow storms, off-road, desert sand, and unpaved roads up and down the west coast of Hwy 1 from Mexico to Canada and back. The JBL sound system is amazing, with plenty of bass and clarity, and the leather seats are very comfortable. The ABS braking system required me to replace the rotors every 2 to 3 years, but I did drive thousands of miles each year to waterfalls and seascapes. I always put premium gas in it, not because it was required, but because I liked how it performed with premium gas. The V6 engine had great power and the automatic transmission shifted very well. The trunk space was good, and the car still drove great with passengers and a full trunk of gear. The radio and CD player are great, and it plays MP3 CDs. The cruise control never failed and worked even up hills with no lag. I would definitely buy this car again, especially with the V6 engine!

This car has a smooth ride, plenty of power, and great fuel economy for a six-cylinder engine. I am really impressed with this car, especially since it's my first Toyota. I had no trouble transitioning from an SUV to this car, and it's easy to drive with a luxurious feel. I feel safe and not overwhelmed with all the SUVs on the road. I'm averaging 23mpg on regular fuel with mixed driving, which is even more power than my BMW.

I absolutely love my 08 Camry! It has been incredibly reliable, especially compared to my previous Chevys. I have owned several brand new Chevys in the past, but none of them came close to the reliability of my Camry. Unlike my Chevys, which needed major service before 30k, my Camry has never given me any trouble. I follow the owner's manual and service it myself with synthetic oil from day 1. I have driven this car hard and make regular trips to FLA and NC 2 to 3 times a year with it. The factory brakes have lasted 100k, which is amazing! The only major component I have had to replace was the water pump. Toyota really got it right with this car and I couldn't be happier with my purchase!

You made a great choice buying this car! It has already taken you on some amazing journeys with its impressive 82000 miles. For the money, it has been an exceptional car that averages around 25 mpg. Although it is the base model and lacks some of the more refined features, it still gets the job done. Of course, there are some minor annoyances such as a slight steering shutter at highway speeds and a short delay when pressing the accelerator, but these are easily overlooked. It uses around a 1/2 qt of oil between changes (5000 miles with Mobil 1), which is not too bad. The base model can be a little noisy at highway speeds, but the new Goodyear's have made a significant improvement. Overall, this car has been a reliable and trustworthy companion on your journeys.

I purchased a used 2008 Camry last October and I absolutely love it! The Toyota Camry has always been a car that I've wanted. I noticed in a recent review that someone had to replace their water pump, and unfortunately, I had to do the same. Luckily, it was caught during my oil change because my coolant reservoir tank was empty. I am grateful for my warranty. Recently, I have been hearing a loud scraping noise. At first, I thought it was my brakes, but it turns out that I need a center exhaust pipe. I am hoping that it will be covered under my warranty, but I won't know until tomorrow. I have had some issues with customer service, but that's a story for another time. Overall, I am still very happy with my Camry!

My family has always owned Toyotas and while reliability was never perfect, it was always okay. When it came time to pick a car for myself after graduating, I thought the sensible thing would be to buy a Camry. However, my experience with this car has been less than ideal. In less than a year of ownership, I have had to visit the dealer service desk multiple times. First, there were transmission problems that have never been completely resolved. Then, a dead battery caused by electrical issues (not my fault) left me stranded. The radio also died after only 3 months. Additionally, the exterior paint has not held up well through the first winter, and there have been other minor issues, including a tail-light bulb that keeps going out. Despite these issues, I remain hopeful that the car will improve with time and proper maintenance.

I expressed my disappointment with my Toyota 2008 Camry. Despite only having 25,000 miles and being driven infrequently due to my close proximity to work, I encountered an issue with the brake booster. The repair cost of $1,500 was unexpected and frustrating. Although I have regularly taken my car to the dealer, they deemed it as 'wear and tear'. While I agree with others who have had similar experiences, I still believe in the quality of Toyota cars. However, I am disappointed with the current situation. The dealer offered to cover the labor cost, but I still had to pay $972 for the part. Overall, I hope Toyota can improve their customer service and address these issues more effectively in the future.

I loved the looks of this car, but soon after buying it, I began to regret it. What a nightmare! The car does not shift correctly, it jerks and hesitates. It downshifts when it shouldn't and flares up and accelerates. This can be very dangerous!

This car has a defect in the software governing the transmission, which causes a 3-4 second delay when rapid acceleration is needed. As a concerned driver, I strongly advise considering a different car manufacturer due to this safety hazard. Although I did not test drive this specific car before signing the paperwork, I did drive a test model 'just like it' which did not have the glitch. Unfortunately, Toyota has not yet addressed this issue, and both the dealership and corporate office have shown an indifference to my concerns. Please take this into consideration when making your decision.
