toyota logo

The Toyota Camry (/ˈkæmri/; Japanese: トヨタ・カムリ Toyota Kamuri) is an automobile sold internationally by the Japanese auto manufacturer Toyota since 1982, spanning multiple generations. Originally compact in size (narrow-body), the Camry has grown since the 1990s to fit the mid-size classification (wide-body)—although the two widths co-existed in that decade. Since the release of the wide-bodied versions, Camry has been extolled by Toyota as the firm's second "world car" after the Corolla. As of 2022, the Camry is positioned above the Corolla and below the Avalon or Crown in several markets.

In Japan, Camry was once exclusive to Toyota Corolla Store retail dealerships. Narrow-body cars also spawned a rebadged sibling in Japan, the Toyota Vista (トヨタ・ビスタ)—also introduced in 1982 and sold at Toyota Vista Store locations. Diesel fuel versions have previously retailed at Toyota Diesel Store. The Vista Ardeo was a wagon version of the Vista V50.

Etymology

The name "Camry" derives from the Japanese word kanmuri (ja:冠, かんむり), meaning "crown". This follows Toyota's naming tradition of using the crown name for primary models starting with the Toyota Crown (1955), continuing with the Toyota Corona (1957) and Corolla (1966); the Latin words for "crown" and "small crown", respectively. Maintaining this theme was the Toyota Tiara (1960) named after the "tiara" form of crown. The Atara trim level name used on the Camry in Australia since 2011 means "crown" in Hebrew. The rebadged Camry variant for Japan, the Toyota Scepter (1991)—took its name from "scepter", a royal accessory to a crown.

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2006-03-19
  • VIN: JT2SV21E9L0
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
  • Summary: TOYOTA CAMRY - SITUATION WHERE THE REAR BRAKE LINES (COVERED AND CANNOT BE SEEN) HAVE CORRODED THROUGH. MY CAMRY RECENTLY HAD ONE OF THE LINES FAIL (BOTH BRAKE LINES AND 3 FUEL LINES HAVE SEVERE CORROSION UNDER THE SHIELD) AND I'M LUCKY I WAS ABLE TO STOP WITHOUT HITTING ANYTHING OR ANYBODY. THIS IS A VERY POOR DESIGN FOR SUCH AREAS AS MINE (SYRACUSE, NY) WHERE THERE IS SIGNIFICANT SALT USE DURING THE WINTER MONTHS. THE SHIELD ACTUALLY PROMOTES CORROSION BY RETAINING WINTER SLUSH, MUD AND SALT. TOYOTA SHOWS A COMPLETE OF CONCERN OVER SUCH A POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS SITUATION THAT IS NOT COVERED BY EITHER A SERVICE BULLETIN OR BY A RECOMMENDED INSPECTION PER THE MAINTENANCE BOOK. TOYOTA DESIGNED SUCH AN INADEQUATE BRAKE LINE SYSTEM FOR THIS MODEL FOR ANY AREA THAT USES SALT DURING THE WINTER MONTHS WITHOUT EVEN A WARNING TO CHECK UNDER THE PLASTIC GUARDS FOR CORROSION, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A FAILURE OR INABILITY TO STOP. *JB

Negative 1990 Toyota Camry car reviews

  1. Thaddeus VonRueden 2024-11-18

As a first-time Toyota buyer, I purchased a vehicle with 88,000 miles on it. The car was in near-perfect condition, with a clean interior, exterior, and engine. Although I experienced a vibration in the steering wheel, replacing the tires resolved the issue. I also encountered a high cold idle problem, which I addressed by cleaning the idle control valve. While the engine light does come on for a minute as the engine warms up, I believe it's a common issue with the EGR Temp Sensor in California Camrys. I attempted to clean it, but it didn't work. I plan to try putting a resistor in the connector, as others have done, to see if that resolves the issue. Overall, I am impressed with the quality of the car and am hopeful that it will last as long as others have claimed. Only time will tell.

  2. Clyde Rippin 2024-09-14

I had a bit of a rough start with the little car my father made me buy, but it grew on me eventually. Unfortunately, it had some issues over the years, including problems with the radiator, starter, overdrive, brake lines, and cruise control. It also had a gas leak if filled over 9 gallons. Despite all of this, it managed to get me where I needed to go and I only ended up spending about as much money on repairs as I did on the car itself. With 200k miles on it, it wasn't a bad first car at all. I just wish I could have taken it with me to college.

  3. Rowan Hammes 2024-06-06

Overall, it sounds like you had a pretty good experience with the car! While you mentioned that the engine and brakes could have been stronger, and the interior could have used a little more room, it's great to hear that the reliability was good. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

Positive 1990 Toyota Camry car reviews

  1. Bill Bode 2024-11-15

Your car is amazing! It has incredible reliability and gas mileage. I'm impressed that you once got 42 mpg on a trip from DC area to Albany, NY. It's great that very little maintenance is required to keep this car at its peak. I'm amazed that this car has been driven over 25k mi a year, has been stolen and recovered, and has almost 240k mi on the odo. It's only now showing signs of age, which is a testament to how well you've taken care of it.

  2. Terrence Hettinger 2024-11-13

Your parents bought this Camry brand new in 1990, fully loaded. When I graduated high school in 1994, they passed it on to me. Since then, I've owned 5 cars, but none of them have lived up to the Camry. It's been great! The original engine and transmission have 320k miles on them and it still runs like a champ! While the gas mileage could be better, it's a V6 from the 1990s, so I can't complain too much. There are no paint problems or rust. This car is definitely going to stay with me until it stops running. Toyota surely made this vehicle to last and last and last. Props to them!

  3. Urban Simonis 2024-10-26

It's great to hear that it's already December 2003 and your Camry just passed the 217,000 mileage marker and still runs great!

  4. Christian Feil 2024-09-20

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share a story with you about my trusty old car. I bought it brand new back in 1990 and it lasted forever without ever having anything wrong with it! Can you believe it? I drove that car for 168,000 miles before I slid off the road into a tree. Luckily, I was only going about 30 mph and didn't sustain any major injuries, just a minor bruise. The only issue I ever had with the car was that the AC went out at around 140,000 miles. Despite that, the car was still super comfortable and I even drove it from NY to Florida a bunch of times without any problems. I miss that car a lot and I really wish Toyota would bring back the Camry wagon. Thanks for listening to my story!

  5. Jeramie Schinner 2024-09-05

Great car! It requires very little maintenance.
