The Toyota Camry (/ˈkæmri/; Japanese: トヨタ・カムリ Toyota Kamuri) is an automobile sold internationally by the Japanese auto manufacturer Toyota since 1982, spanning multiple generations. Originally compact in size (narrow-body), the Camry has grown since the 1990s to fit the mid-size classification (wide-body)—although the two widths co-existed in that decade. Since the release of the wide-bodied versions, Camry has been extolled by Toyota as the firm's second "world car" after the Corolla. As of 2022, the Camry is positioned above the Corolla and below the Avalon or Crown in several markets.

In Japan, Camry was once exclusive to Toyota Corolla Store retail dealerships. Narrow-body cars also spawned a rebadged sibling in Japan, the Toyota Vista (トヨタ・ビスタ)—also introduced in 1982 and sold at Toyota Vista Store locations. Diesel fuel versions have previously retailed at Toyota Diesel Store. The Vista Ardeo was a wagon version of the Vista V50.

Etymology

The name "Camry" derives from the Japanese word kanmuri (ja:冠, かんむり), meaning "crown". This follows Toyota's naming tradition of using the crown name for primary models starting with the Toyota Crown (1955), continuing with the Toyota Corona (1957) and Corolla (1966); the Latin words for "crown" and "small crown", respectively. Maintaining this theme was the Toyota Tiara (1960) named after the "tiara" form of crown. The Atara trim level name used on the Camry in Australia since 2011 means "crown" in Hebrew. The rebadged Camry variant for Japan, the Toyota Scepter (1991)—took its name from "scepter", a royal accessory to a crown.

Common complaints include radio rebooting, Bluetooth connectivity problems, and issues with the car's electrical system.

Addressing these issues promptly is essential for the comfort and safety of the vehicle occupants.
  8. Engine Electrical: Engine electrical problems have been reported by some Camry owners. These issues may include problems with the engine's electrical components, wiring, or sensors, leading to issues with starting, performance, or overall engine function.

By addressing these common problems promptly and proactively, Camry owners can ensure the longevity and reliability of their vehicles. Regular maintenance, timely repairs, and attention to warning signs can help mitigate these issues and keep the 2017 Toyota Camry running smoothly.

Negative 2017 Toyota Camry car reviews

  1. Cristina Wisozk 2024-11-17

I purchased a 2017 Toyota Camry SE brand new, but soon realized that the seats were uncomfortable and hard. As a result, I made the decision to sell the car. I am confident in my choice and have no regrets. The material used for the seats did not meet my expectations.

  2. Monserrate Schiller 2024-10-22

I recently purchased a Toyota Camry XLE 2017 with leather seats. Unfortunately, after driving it for only 25K miles, I noticed that the driver's side leather seat was cracking along the stitching. I took it to the dealership (Nalley Toyota Roswell, GA) and they took pictures and sent them to the factory. However, I did not receive a call back from them for a week. When I called back, the dealership did not allow me to speak to the service advisor who handled my case. They simply informed me that the issue was not covered under warranty. I requested a call back, but over a week later, I am still waiting for it. I contacted Toyota directly, but they could not find the claim because it was filed by the dealership under 'Misc bodywork'. I requested someone to review the case, but they informed me that it needs to be initiated by the dealership. Unfortunately, the dealership has not called me back yet. I would advise others to be cautious before getting upgrades since no one takes responsibility once it's time to fix things!

  3. Branson Hansen 2024-09-03

I used to believe that Toyota made cars that were reliable and of good quality. However, I have recently experienced some issues with my Toyota Camry. For instance, the temperature control seems to be malfunctioning as I have to set it to 77F to get the temperature to be in the low 70s in the car. Additionally, I have noticed a vibration that has developed, which I later found out is a common problem on the 2015 - 2017 Toyota Camry, all trims. Although I have been in contact with Toyota about this issue, they have not been very helpful. I have read other people's experiences with Toyota on the same issue and they have received similar responses. Toyota has tried replacing the tires, rebalancing, etc. but nothing seems to fix the problem. Therefore, I would advise you to stay away from the Camry unless you enjoy driving a car that vibrates all the time.

  4. Pietro Connelly 2024-08-02

After owning the 2016-2017 Camry for 1-1/2 years, I can say that it is on par with other cars in its class. However, there are some annoyances that are present in many present-day car designs, such as poor rear visibility and blind spots due to large headrests and steep windows, as well as cheaper materials used in some areas. The electronic steering can also feel slippery and unstable. On the positive side, Toyota uses a timing chain instead of a belt for the engine, which is more reliable. However, this can make the engine noisy, especially in the Corolla. The Camry is generally less noisy, but it can still be loud in some cases. Additionally, it can take some time for the car to warm up in cold weather due to the use of a timing chain. Despite these issues, I have found that the Camry is a reliable car overall. When I brought my concerns to Toyota service, they explained that these issues were within normal operating standards and parameters. The lessons here are that there seems to be considerable Camry car-to-car variability, and whether a manufacturer gives you a one day or a lifetime warranty, they can get out of fixing a problem by simply claiming that an issue is 'within normal operating standards'. Heading into the cabin, you'll find that the seats are uncomfortable and not suitable for long trips. The cloth seats are actually made of slippery polyester, with extended sections of plain vinyl, which makes using seat covers unsafe. Additionally, Toyota's headrests are far wider than those used by other manufacturers, making it difficult to see over your left shoulder. However, the headrests do provide 10% more whiplash protection than a 1976 Bonneville would. On really cold days, the heat duct for your feet isn't oriented low enough, so your feet will still be cold even with the heat blowing full on. The stock radio and sound system are not great, so if you buy a Camry, it's worth considering an audio system upgrade. The ignition switch on the steering column is poorly machined and of low quality, which can make starting your car clumsy. The leather covering the steering wheel is thin and of low quality, but this is the same as in other cars. Additionally, only the top third of the steering wheel is actual leather, with the rest being 'pleather', although it seems to be of high quality. The Camry's electronic power steering has as much unit-to-unit variation as its timing chain characteristics.Out of the Camrys I test drove, three had reasonably weighted steering. However, the one I ended up getting has steering that feels crazy slippery, like hydroplaning on sheer ice. It's especially unsettling at highway speeds, feeling unstable and veering out of control. Despite these issues, and any potential new ones that may arise, I would advise anyone considering a Camry to thoroughly inspect it before making a purchase. If you do decide to get one, you may be better off with one from the dealer's stock, since you can test it out beforehand. It's worth noting that the Camry does have a real transmission, unlike some of its competitors that only offer CVTs. Unfortunately, none of the competition is all that different or better.

Hello! I have been a loyal Toyota customer since 1984, when I purchased my first new car, a Tercel. Since then, I have owned multiple Toyotas and have generally been very satisfied with their quality. However, I have noticed a decline in quality since my 2008 Avalon. The paint quality on my 2017 Camry is not as good as my 2004 Camry, and the interior plastic surfaces are easily scratched. Additionally, there is quite a bit of road and wind noise on the highway. Unfortunately, the Scout GPS connected nav app on my 2017 Camry does not work, and Toyota has not been able to offer a solution. While some may consider this a minor issue, it has led me to question the direction Toyota is heading in. As a result, my family and I decided to try a new Honda three years ago, and we have been very happy with its quality, fit and finish, as well as the dealer and service experience. Thank you for listening to my feedback!

I recently had to replace my Chrysler 300c hemi v8, which was extremely reliable, but unfortunately totaled. Since my partner and I are planning to purchase a house in 20 months, we wanted to keep costs contained and stay on budget. Although I would have loved another 300c, I decided to go for the Camry SE. I must say, the Camry SE is exceptionally quiet and smooth riding. The 2.5 4 cylinder provides decent acceleration, which is more than adequate for my needs. While the interior materials could be better in my opinion, the seats are far and away much improved over my grandparents' 2011. During my search for a new car, I looked at a ton of cars, rented them, and spent a few days with each. To my surprise, the Camry was the best at almost everything, except for ride and sound isolation. The other car that came close was the new Malibu, but I trust Toyota more, so I bought the Camry.

I hope you're doing well! I noticed that you recently purchased a car and I'm glad to hear that you're impressed with it. It's always great to have a positive experience with a new vehicle. I remember when I traded in my Hyundai Sonata for a new car, it was a big change but I was happy with my decision. Thanks for sharing your experience!

I also have a Toyota Avalon XLE, but I recently bought a Camry SE about three weeks ago. I must say, my Camry is better than the Avalon in terms of gas mileage.

I just bought a 2017 Toyota Canry and I am absolutely in love with it! It's the LE model, but it's fully loaded with features like a back-up camera, power seats, touch screen, and Blue-tooth. The gas mileage is also amazing, I'm seeing 34 mpg which is twice as good as my old car. I couldn't be happier!

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my new 2017 CAMRY. I've only had it for a little over a week, but I'm already really impressed with it! I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a great car.
