1996 Toyota Camry problems

The Toyota Camry (/ˈkæmri/; Japanese: トヨタ・カムリ Toyota Kamuri) is an automobile sold internationally by the Japanese auto manufacturer Toyota since 1982, spanning multiple generations. Originally compact in size (narrow-body), the Camry has grown since the 1990s to fit the mid-size classification (wide-body)—although the two widths co-existed in that decade. Since the release of the wide-bodied versions, Camry has been extolled by Toyota as the firm's second "world car" after the Corolla. As of 2022, the Camry is positioned above the Corolla and below the Avalon or Crown in several markets.

In Japan, Camry was once exclusive to Toyota Corolla Store retail dealerships. Narrow-body cars also spawned a rebadged sibling in Japan, the Toyota Vista (トヨタ・ビスタ)—also introduced in 1982 and sold at Toyota Vista Store locations. Diesel fuel versions have previously retailed at Toyota Diesel Store. The Vista Ardeo was a wagon version of the Vista V50.

Etymology

The name "Camry" derives from the Japanese word kanmuri (ja:冠, かんむり), meaning "crown". This follows Toyota's naming tradition of using the crown name for primary models starting with the Toyota Crown (1955), continuing with the Toyota Corona (1957) and Corolla (1966); the Latin words for "crown" and "small crown", respectively. Maintaining this theme was the Toyota Tiara (1960) named after the "tiara" form of crown. The Atara trim level name used on the Camry in Australia since 2011 means "crown" in Hebrew. The rebadged Camry variant for Japan, the Toyota Scepter (1991)—took its name from "scepter", a royal accessory to a crown.

Negative 1996 Toyota Camry car reviews

This car has had excellent dealer care and we appreciate that, but unfortunately, we have experienced some issues with gross oil leaks. We would like to share our experience and suggest considering other used car options. The oil leaks can be quite serious and cause a lot of inconvenience. Thank you for your understanding.

I received this car as a graduation gift and it's been pretty good so far, considering how much I use it. I often go 95 on the thruway and it holds up well. While it's starting to have some problems, I don't mind because I put some 12 inch MA Audio subs in it and a Kenwood head unit. Everyone refers to it as my 'hoopdee', and even though it's salvaged, it's crazy fun on the thruway. The pickup isn't great unless you floor it, but it gets great gas mileage. I filled up and took a trip to Auburn from Buffalo and only used 1/4 of a tank of gas. I love it and will be using it as a backup until I find another one. My goal is to get it to 1 million miles, which would be amazing!

I bought this car back in July 2007 when it had 114k miles on it. Over the years, I had to replace a lot of parts, including the timing belt, water pump, fuel pump, rotors, tires, plugs, axles, and even the transmission. Although I had to replace other things as well, these were the major ones. Unfortunately, the paint job is in pretty bad shape and the door handles have a tendency to snap off. Yesterday, the car finally gave up and I'm not sure what the issue is this time. If you're considering a Toyota Camry, I would suggest looking elsewhere.

My wife purchased this car for $6000 with only 50K miles on it from an older woman before we were married. Since then, we have taken it on old forest service roads and through small streams, packed to the brim with camping gear and a canoe strapped on top. It has been a comfortable and reliable ride, and I never worry about breaking down or repair costs with this car. In the past 90K miles, we have done regular maintenance and service, including timing belt & water pump, spark plugs and wires, and oil changes. We only had to replace a seal on the final drive unit and both CV boots, which cost us a total of $1500 for 90K miles of hard driving. Overall, this is simply the best car we have ever owned.

In 2006, my mom gave me this car with around 140,000 miles on it. Recently, I started saving for a new car as the Toyota was getting old. However, this car just keeps going! It has reached 173K miles with no major mechanical repairs. Although I have had some minor issues, such as the trunk 'pop' mechanism breaking, I can still access it through the backseat. I hope my next car (hopefully another Camry!) will be as reliable as this one.

  3. Stan Robel 2024-11-20

Drive is very quiet but can be boring at times. The front seats may not be the most comfortable as they lack lumbar support. Unfortunately, I had to replace the axles and rack and pinion at 80K miles, and the cassette died at 70K miles. There were also some issues with engine oil and power steering leaks. Overall, my experience with the Camry was not great, but I would recommend considering a 4-cylinder Camry as it may be a better option with cheaper maintenance costs.

  4. Clemens Legros 2024-09-24

I see that you bought this car in 2005 with 148000 kms and it was in perfect condition. It's great to hear that it has been incredibly reliable and very well built, which is a testament to its quality. Although you mentioned that it may be a bit boring, the V6 engine is very smooth and quiet. However, it lacks low end torque and may bog down if you step on it. The ride is very smooth, but it could benefit from more controlled handling. The steering is not very sharp, but it still gets the job done. The transmission shifts well most of the time, but it may short shift in normal mode and hang on to revs too much in power mode. The quality of materials and build is awesome, especially the excellent quality leather. However, the front seat padding is hard and may pinch the thighs. Overall, it's a very good car with some minor shortcomings.

My 1996 Camry has definitely been the best car I have ever bought. Even though the 4 cyl. could use more power, everything else is perfect. I have 96,000 miles on my Camry and it still runs like the day I bought it. No major mechanical problems, just normal wear and tear. It's the perfect car! :)
