1993 Toyota Camry problems

toyota logo

The Toyota Camry (/ˈkæmri/; Japanese: トヨタ・カムリ Toyota Kamuri) is an automobile sold internationally by the Japanese auto manufacturer Toyota since 1982, spanning multiple generations. Originally compact in size (narrow-body), the Camry has grown since the 1990s to fit the mid-size classification (wide-body)—although the two widths co-existed in that decade. Since the release of the wide-bodied versions, Camry has been extolled by Toyota as the firm's second "world car" after the Corolla. As of 2022, the Camry is positioned above the Corolla and below the Avalon or Crown in several markets.

In Japan, Camry was once exclusive to Toyota Corolla Store retail dealerships. Narrow-body cars also spawned a rebadged sibling in Japan, the Toyota Vista (トヨタ・ビスタ)—also introduced in 1982 and sold at Toyota Vista Store locations. Diesel fuel versions have previously retailed at Toyota Diesel Store. The Vista Ardeo was a wagon version of the Vista V50.

Etymology

The name "Camry" derives from the Japanese word kanmuri (ja:冠, かんむり), meaning "crown". This follows Toyota's naming tradition of using the crown name for primary models starting with the Toyota Crown (1955), continuing with the Toyota Corona (1957) and Corolla (1966); the Latin words for "crown" and "small crown", respectively. Maintaining this theme was the Toyota Tiara (1960) named after the "tiara" form of crown. The Atara trim level name used on the Camry in Australia since 2011 means "crown" in Hebrew. The rebadged Camry variant for Japan, the Toyota Scepter (1991)—took its name from "scepter", a royal accessory to a crown.

Common 1993 Toyota Camry problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the Toyota Camry 1993, several common problems have been reported. Here is a detailed list of these issues:

  1. Engine Shakes: Owners have reported engine shaking when the car is in Drive. This problem is often related to worn motor mounts or vacuum hoses. Replacing the motor mounts and cleaning the throttle body can help alleviate this issue. Additionally, addressing any faulty emission components can contribute to reducing engine shaking.
  2. AC Issues: Some owners have experienced problems with the air conditioning system, including musty smells from the vents. This issue may be due to mold growth in the AC system. Replacing the AC compressor or addressing mold growth can resolve this problem.
  3. Faulty Door Locks: Malfunctioning door locks have been a common complaint among owners. The door locks may stop working suddenly, posing a safety risk. Replacing the door lock actuator is a common fix for this issue.
  4. Interior Parts and Accessories: Reports have highlighted problems with melting dashboards and faulty sun visors. While these issues are not critical, they can be resolved by replacing the affected parts.
  5. Braking System: Some owners have faced issues with unresponsive brakes, leading to potential collisions. Problems with the brake light randomly coming on have also been reported. Regular maintenance of the braking system and addressing any issues promptly can help prevent accidents related to brake malfunctions.

By addressing these common problems reported by owners of the Toyota Camry 1993, car owners can ensure the longevity and reliability of their vehicles. Regular maintenance, prompt repairs, and attention to these issues can help mitigate potential problems and keep the Toyota Camry running smoothly.

Negative 1993 Toyota Camry car reviews

  1. Jabari Nitzsche 2024-08-24

At 125,000 miles, the car required a new engine, new tires, and multiple trips to the dealer. Despite paying $1400 for a comprehensive review, the steering mechanism has now broken and requires an estimated $500 repair. However, I believe that Toyota should provide a refund for these issues.

  2. Jaylan Witting 2024-08-11

This car has required a significant amount of repairs, including a transmission replacement at 103,000 miles, two cv axle replacements at 67,000 miles, a water pump and timing belt replacement at 71,000 miles, and a radiator replacement at 91,504 miles. Currently, the car has developed an oil leak at 113,000 miles, which is believed to be from the head gasket, with an estimated cost of $900. Despite these challenges, I have learned a lot about car maintenance and feel confident in my ability to handle any future issues. While I may consider other car brands in the future, I appreciate the reliability and durability that Toyota has provided me thus far.

  3. Jacinto Parker 2024-07-13

I have had a very negative experience with this car. It has had issues with oil leaks, door handles falling off, and windows not functioning properly. In contrast, I have had consistently positive experiences with Ford vehicles and will continue to choose them in the future.

  4. Anastacio Kohler 2024-05-02

When I got my first car at 16, it was an SL-1 Saturn 1995. After a couple of years, I decided to try out an older Toyota to test its dependability on my own. I must say, this car has been unstoppable. I bought it at 129,000 miles, and now it has 160,000 miles on it. In two years, the only things I've had to replace were a new distributor, an engine mount, and the timing belt.

  5. Julio Pouros 2024-02-26

I bought my 1993 Toyota Camry back in April of 2005 with 125,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, I had some issues with it, including having to replace two head gaskets, two oxygen sensors, a wheel bearing, and two CV shafts. While these problems didn't occur all at once, they did happen within the 15,000 miles I've driven it since purchasing it. Additionally, I found that it wasn't as peppy as I had hoped and the gas mileage wasn't great. However, it did run smoothly. Despite my past experiences, I have decided to trade it in. I have owned many cars in the past, but this one just wasn't the right fit for me.

Positive 1993 Toyota Camry car reviews

  1. Madyson VonRueden 2024-10-26

This Camry has been amazing! It has saved my life twice in desperate situations with its agility and power, and kept me out of many potential problems. It has only required normal maintenance, with the exception of the axle boots. These tore, probably from one of the desperate moves. If you have a shimmy (between 50mph and 55, and widening with time) that's hard to diagnose, and the front end is tight, look to the boots. This car should make it to 300,000 now.

  2. Tyler Christiansen 2024-10-23

I owned a 91 Camry LE V6 wagon for a decade, and it served me well with approximately 190,000 miles on it. As it was my only car, I drove it every day and had to replace a few things over the years, spending around $2,000 in total. However, considering the length of time I had it, the cost was spread out and reasonable. Unfortunately, it was totaled in an accident a few months ago, but I'm grateful to have come out unharmed. While searching for a replacement, I came across a 1993 Camry LE V6 deluxe wagon with only 125,000 miles, which feels like a new car to me. I'm thrilled to have it as my new ride!

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my car that I bought last year with 130K on it. I absolutely love this car and I wish more cars were still made with this level of quality and stability. With Shell Vpower, I can get 34 MPG with 40% city and 60% highway driving. The best part is that it never needs anything but oil changes, which are a snap to do yourself. While it may not be the most exciting car to drive, the manual transmission makes it more enjoyable than most Camrys. Thanks for listening!

This car has been in my family since it was new. I recently purchased it for my wife, from my parents. Fortunately, there have been no major problems with the car, just regular maintenance. It passes emissions with no problem and still looks and runs like the day they purchased it new.

I'm so glad to hear that you've had such a positive experience with your Camry over the past 9 years! It's great to hear that you've had no major issues, and that you've been able to enjoy your car for so long. It's a testament to the quality of Toyota's vehicles that they can last for so many miles. While it's always tough to say goodbye to a beloved car, I'm sure that you'll be able to find another Toyota that you'll love just as much. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!
