Mercedes-Benz (German pronunciation: ⓘ), commonly referred to as Mercedes and sometimes as Benz, is a German luxury and commercial vehicle automotive brand established in 1926. Mercedes-Benz AG (a Mercedes-Benz Group subsidiary established in 2019) is headquartered in Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Mercedes-Benz AG produces consumer luxury vehicles and light commercial vehicles badged as Mercedes-Benz. From November 2019 onwards, Mercedes-Benz-badged heavy commercial vehicles (trucks and buses) are managed by Daimler Truck, a former part of the Mercedes-Benz Group turned into an independent company in late 2021. In 2018, Mercedes-Benz was the largest brand of premium vehicles in the world, having sold 2.31 million passenger cars.
The brand's origins lie in Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft's 1901 Mercedes and Carl Benz's 1886 Benz Patent-Motorwagen, which is widely regarded as the first internal combustion engine in a self-propelled automobile. The slogan for the brand is "the Best or Nothing".
History
Mercedes-Benz traces its origins to Karl Benz's first internal combustion engine in a car, seen in the Benz Patent Motorwagen – financed by Bertha Benz's dowry and patented in January 1886 – and Gottlieb Daimler and their engineer Wilhelm Maybach's conversion of a stagecoach, with the addition of a petrol engine, introduced later that year. The Mercedes automobile was first marketed in 1901 by Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft (DMG).
Emil Jellinek-Mercedes, a Jewish-Austrian automobile entrepreneur who worked with DMG, registered the trademark in 1902, naming the 1901 Mercedes 35 hp after his daughter Mercedes Jellinek. Jellinek was a businessman and marketing strategist who promoted "horseless" Daimler automobiles among the highest circles of society. At the time, it was a meeting place for the haute volée of France and Europe, especially in winter. His customers included the Rothschild family and other wealthy clients, but as early as 1901, he was selling Mercedes cars in the "New World" as well, including to billionaires Rockefeller, Astor, Morgan, and Taylor. At the Nice race he attended in 1899, Jellinek drove under the pseudonym "Monsieur Mercédès". Many consider that race the birth of Mercedes-Benz as a brand. In 1901, the name "Mercedes" was re-registered by DMG worldwide as a protected trademark. The first Mercedes-Benz branded vehicles were produced in 1926, following the merger of Karl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler's companies into the Daimler-Benz company on 28 June of the same year.
Gottlieb Daimler was born on 17 March 1834 in Schorndorf. After training as a gunsmith and working in France, he attended the Polytechnic School in Stuttgart from 1857 to 1859. After completing various technical activities in France and England, he started working as a draftsman in Geislingen in 1862. At the end of 1863, he was appointed workshop inspector at a machine-tool factory in Reutlingen, where he met Wilhelm Maybach in 1865.
Throughout the 1930s, Mercedes-Benz produced the 770 model, a car that was notably popular throughout Germany's Nazi period. Adolf Hitler was known to have driven in a model of this car during his time in power, with modified custom bulletproof windshields. Most of the currently surviving 770 models were sold at auctions to private buyers. One of the cars is currently on display at the War Museum in Ottawa, Ontario.
From 1937 onward, Daimler Benz focused increasingly on military products such as the LG3000 lorry and the DB600 and the DB601 aero engines. To build the latter, in 1936, it built a factory hidden in the forest at Genshagen around 10 km south of Berlin. By 1942, the company had mostly stopped producing cars, and was now devoted to war production. According to its statement, in 1944, almost half of its 63,610 employees were forced labourers, prisoners of war, or concentration-camp detainees. Another source quotes this figure at 46,000. The company later paid $12 million in reparations to the labourers' families.
In 1958, the two companies began a partnership to sell their cars in the United States with Studebaker. A few American-based Daimler Benz dealerships were converted into Mercedes-Benz dealerships when Daimler's non-Mercedes-partnered company closed in 1966.
Over the decades, Mercedes-Benz has introduced many electronic and mechanical innovations and safety features that later became common. Currently, Mercedes-Benz is one of the best-known and longest-standing automotive brands in the world. The pontiff's Popemobile has often been sourced from Mercedes-Benz.
In November 2019, Daimler AG announced that Mercedes-Benz, until that point a company marque, would be spun off into a separate, wholly owned subsidiary called Mercedes-Benz AG. The new subsidiary would manage the Mercedes-Benz car and van business. Mercedes-Benz-badged trucks and buses would be part of the Daimler Truck AG subsidiary.

In May 2022, Mercedes-Benz announced that it has recently sold the most expensive car at the price of $142 million (€135 million). The car is a very rare 1955 Mercedes-Benz SLR that has been kept in the German automaker's collection and bought by a private owner. Mercedes in an announcement said that the sale will be used to establish the Mercedes-Benz Fund.
In June 2022, Mercedes-Benz recalled almost one million vehicles built between 2004 and 2015, due to potential problems with their braking system, caused by possible "advanced corrosion".

Also Active Brake Assist functions limited - see operators Manual To reset: follow another vehicle for 5 minutes. This is Very Very Very frustrating and UNSAFE. This function should not automatically shut off. I paid a lot of money to try and figure out the problem. This is VERY UNSAFE for this feature of instantly shut off for no reason and is dangerous. Please fix this with a software update and allow me to download it at my dealer for no charge. Not happy as I use my cruise control on long trips in the USA.

- Summary: September 8th, 2024 @ approximately 3pm My Mercedes EQE 350+ accelerated to a high speed when the front tire touched a curb. The car ran over the curb and into the parking lot. I was able to steer the car but the brakes didn't work. The car kept going through a stop sign and into the intersection. Luckily there were no cars in the intersection and I finally thought to turn the car off. It then stopped. The whole rubber covering over the battery was destroyed from the rocks on the curb. The battery was severely damaged also. The car was at the dealership from Friday Sept 13th until around Oct 9th. They finished their testing and sent the info to corporate Mercedes on Wed Sept. 18th. I finally heard back from Mercedes corporate on Oct 3rd, 2024. They said that they didn't find any malfunctions. During this waiting period I was pressured by the Mercedes dealership to file an Insurance Claim. I said I wasn't filing a claim until I heard back from Mercedes Corporate. There have been several cases online where the same issue has occurred by other Mercedes owners. One was almost exactly the same as mine. The only difference was that the car stopped when the tires were flattened. I have been driving for 50 years and have never experienced anything like this. My nephew was in the car with me and I repeatedly said to him the brakes aren't working. The car was a write off. I had to file an insurance claim.

- Summary: On several occasions the vehicle aggressively stopped and jerked as if someone hit my car from behind. I took it to the dealership and they thought it was a software malfunction issue, since there were recalls on the vehicle. I received my car back from the dealership and in a week of receiving my car, the issue happened twice. This has been extremely scary especially because on two occasions a car almost hit me in the back and both times my son was in the car. The car has done this where there were not any cars around and the car falsely believes there is a car around a collision will occur. Today , the car did it twice. The first was while I was taking my son to school going slowly. The second time this happened was while I was stopped at a red light. The dashboard then had a red triangle with an exclamation mark inside. Every time the car stops it caused my neck and back to hurt and I am afraid a car will actually hit me from behind.

I swerved, but thankfully did not leave the road. Shattered glass was contained in the cover of the sunroof as I didn’t have it open at the time. A huge hole is in my roof of my car! I called the dealership who said it was not covered under any warranty although I just got the vehicle in Feb of this year. He said I would have to contact corporate. I contacted corporate who said bring it in for an inspection. At the conclusion of the inspection on 10/8/24, they could not determine if it was a manufacturer defect or outside sources since they could not find a point of impact, because the glass was nearly all gone. I had to get my insurance involved. There was no warning whatsoever. The dealership said no recalls. It just exploded all of a sudden!

- Summary: At 0820 AM on Monday, 23 SEP 24 while traveling South on interstate 95/495 in rush hour traffic the vehicle lost complete power and 3-4 messages appeared in the display. I recall one saying the rear differential is inoperable. I turned on the emergency flashers and was fortunate to allow the car to coast to the highway’s left shoulder without causing an accident. I don’t remember the other warnings as I was preoccupied trying to get the car safely off the highway. I was able to restart the vehicle after allowing it to sit for a minute or two. I have an appointment to have it inspected on Thursday at Mercedes of Annapolis, MD. This is the second time the vehicle has lost power while traveling on the beltway. A recall was eventually issued a few weeks after the first incident. I convinced my wife to purchase this vehicle to replace her 20 year old car thinking it would provide safe, reliable transportation. To the contrary the car has had to be towed twice, has lost power on the highway and was in the shop almost a month for a noise complaint. I was told the noise issue was due to 3 bad tires, likely due to potholes, and charged $1741 to replace them. I am totally convinced the issue was not related to potholes but had no recourse other than to pay the $1741. My wife feels totally unsafe driving the car, particularly when I am out of town for work.

- Summary: On Mon, [XXX], my father was involved in a single car accident in the family's Mercedes-Bens EQE 350 (all electric) vehicle. When he was in driveway, he claims he was on the brake when the car suddenly accelerated on its own. It destroyed the garage door and then went through the garage destroying property, the attic staircase, and the frame of an interior wall into a bedroom. We have pictures of the damage. Emergency repairs were required to stabilize the frame of the house with more 2x4s. The insurance company says he likely confused the brake and gas pedals, but he's convinced that he was on the brake when it suddenly accelerated on its own. Importantly, no auto-emergency braking occurred, no airbag deployed, and no other emergency systems engaged. We received no indication that the system reported an accident. I was able to source an online forum where individuals recounted identical fact patterns about being on the brake and the Mercedes EQ vehicle accelerating dangerously on its own. We believe that the issue was a electrical computer malfunction and yes, the car is available for inspection. It is currently being repaired at a collision shop in Edison, NJ. I have sent a general service request to Mercedes Benz to encourage an inspection from them. The problem has not yet been sourced or reproduced and no warning lamps or messages appeared prior, during, or after the accident. - Consequence: An axle that moves out of position can cause a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.
