1998 Toyota Camry problems

The Toyota Camry (/ˈkæmri/; Japanese: トヨタ・カムリ Toyota Kamuri) is an automobile sold internationally by the Japanese auto manufacturer Toyota since 1982, spanning multiple generations. Originally compact in size (narrow-body), the Camry has grown since the 1990s to fit the mid-size classification (wide-body)—although the two widths co-existed in that decade. Since the release of the wide-bodied versions, Camry has been extolled by Toyota as the firm's second "world car" after the Corolla. As of 2022, the Camry is positioned above the Corolla and below the Avalon or Crown in several markets.

In Japan, Camry was once exclusive to Toyota Corolla Store retail dealerships. Narrow-body cars also spawned a rebadged sibling in Japan, the Toyota Vista (トヨタ・ビスタ)—also introduced in 1982 and sold at Toyota Vista Store locations. Diesel fuel versions have previously retailed at Toyota Diesel Store. The Vista Ardeo was a wagon version of the Vista V50.

Etymology

The name "Camry" derives from the Japanese word kanmuri (ja:冠, かんむり), meaning "crown". This follows Toyota's naming tradition of using the crown name for primary models starting with the Toyota Crown (1955), continuing with the Toyota Corona (1957) and Corolla (1966); the Latin words for "crown" and "small crown", respectively. Maintaining this theme was the Toyota Tiara (1960) named after the "tiara" form of crown. The Atara trim level name used on the Camry in Australia since 2011 means "crown" in Hebrew. The rebadged Camry variant for Japan, the Toyota Scepter (1991)—took its name from "scepter", a royal accessory to a crown.

Common 1998 Toyota Camry problems

The Toyota Camry 1998 has been known for some common problems that owners have reported. Here are the most frequently mentioned issues:

  • Ignition Coil Failure: This problem is more common in higher mileage vehicles, typically after reaching 100,000 miles. The ignition coil is responsible for generating the high voltage needed to create a spark in the spark plugs. When it fails, it can cause the engine to misfire, stall, or have difficulty starting. Replacing the ignition coil can solve this problem, but it's essential to diagnose the issue correctly, as other factors can also cause engine misfires.
  • Power Steering Problems: Some Camry owners have reported issues with the power steering system, such as stiff or hard steering. This problem can be caused by low power steering fluid or a malfunctioning power steering pump. It's essential to diagnose the issue correctly, as driving with a malfunctioning power steering system can be dangerous.
  • Suspension and Brake Issues: Some Camry owners have reported issues with the suspension and brake systems, such as noisy brakes, uneven tire wear, or a vibrating steering wheel. These problems can be caused by worn-out brake pads, damaged rotors, or faulty suspension components. It's essential to diagnose the issue correctly, as driving with a malfunctioning suspension or brake system can be dangerous.

In summary, the Toyota Camry 1998 has some common problems that owners have reported. These issues include hesitation on acceleration, faulty blower motor resistor, ignition coil failure, power steering problems, and suspension and brake issues. It's essential to diagnose these problems correctly and address them promptly to ensure the safety and reliability of the vehicle.

SEAT BELTS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-02-17
  • VIN: JT2BG22K2W0
  • Components: SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: STARTING IN 2015, THREE OF THE 5 SEAT BELTS IN MY 1998 CAMRY DO NOT REMAIN LATCHED, OR FAIL TO INITIALLY LATCH. AS A (RETIRED) MECHANICAL ENGINEER, I DISASSEMBLED THEM TO UNDERSTAND THE PROBLEM. THE DEFECT IS IN THE ANCHOR MECHANISM WITH THE "PRESS" BUTTON ON IT. THE "PRESS" BUTTON HAS A METAL SPRING MOUNTED ON THE RED PLASTIC PART, AND THE PLASTIC HAS GRADUALLY CRACKED AT THE SPRING MOUNT. THIS METAL SPRING IS WHAT PUSHES THE METAL BLOCK THROUGH THE RECTANGULAR HOLE IN THE SHOULDER BELT COUPLER, WHEN IT IS PLUGGED INTO THE SEAT BELT ANCHOR AND LATCHED PROPERLY. EVENTUALLY, THE CRACK GROWS TO THE POINT THAT THE METAL SPRING CANNOT EXERT ENOUGH FORCE TO RELIABLY LATCH TO THE SHOULDER BELT. IT MAY INITIALLY LATCH AND FEEL SECURE, BUT CAN THEN COME LOOSE SEVERAL MINUTES LATER WHEN DRIVING THE CAR. I PLAN TO INCLUDE 3 PHOTOS OF THE PROBLEM PART, ONE SHOWING THE CRACK IN THE PLASTIC. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN IN ANY ACCIDENTS, SO THE SEAT BELT PROBLEM HAS NOT RESULTED IN ANY INJURIES TO MYSELF OR MY PASSENGERS. THE LOCAL TOYOTA SERVICE DEPARTMENT INFORMED ME THAT THERE WAS NO EXTENDED WARRANTY COVERAGE FOR SEAT BELTS, SO I BOUGHT NEW TOYOTA REPLACEMENT PARTS FOR THE DEFECTIVE BELT ANCHORS. WE LIVE IN THE DESERT, SO LONG-TERM HEAT AND COLD CYCLES COULD BE A CONTRIBUTING FACTOR. THE SPRING HAS ITS HEAVIEST LOAD ON THE PLASTIC MOUNT WHEN THE SEAT BELT IS NOT ENGAGED, SO THE CRACK COULD POSSIBLY START, OR GROW, EVEN WHEN THE SEAT BELT IS NOT BEING USED.

Negative 1998 Toyota Camry car reviews

  1. Dorian Emard 2024-09-01

Hello! We're sorry to hear that you've experienced some issues with your car. We understand that it can be frustrating to deal with problems like a faulty turn signal and a rattle in the front, especially when they seem to be common issues for this model and year. Additionally, we understand that the lack of driver's lumbar support, map lights, and a remote that doesn't open the trunk can be inconvenient. We appreciate your feedback and will do our best to address these concerns. Thank you for choosing our brand!

  2. Darius Krajcik 2024-08-25

After 5 years, I decided to sell it. Unfortunately, the paint had deteriorated, the gold emblems had peeled, the interior fake wood trim had also peeled, and the seats looked like they belonged to a 15-year-old car. Additionally, there was an oil sludge problem, so I decided to unload it before it died. Considering it was worth only 20 grand when new, it wasn't worth keeping.

  3. Janick Gorczany 2024-07-23

I really enjoyed my Camry when I first bought it, but unfortunately, I've had some issues with it since then. The driver's side door handle has broken off twice, and the driver's window doesn't always roll up smoothly. Additionally, the clear coat on the hood has chipped off. However, I'm grateful that I haven't had any major mechanical issues with the car, and have only needed to do scheduled maintenance work. Considering that it has 220,000 miles on it, I suppose I can't complain too much.

  4. Rowan Kreiger 2024-06-22

The Camry model in question does not meet the high standards set by previous and subsequent models. The brakes are unreliable and the interior is unattractive and prone to dirt. Additionally, there is significant roll in turns and issues with the air and heat system. These concerns are not in line with the quality expected of a Camry.

  5. Maximilian Altenwerth 2024-05-20

I've been driving my Camry for over 5 years now and it's been a reliable vehicle overall. However, I did experience 3 major defects that were unexpected for a Toyota (verified online): 1) Oxygen Sensor, 2) Engine Gel, and 3) ISC Valve. Fortunately, these repairs weren't too expensive, but they persisted despite following the recommended maintenance in the handbook. While the car isn't always reliable to start, it does run. Would I buy this car again? Probably not, as it seems to be from the worst generation. If you're looking to reduce body roll, upgrading to 16

Hi there! I'm excited to hear that you're considering purchasing a new car! I understand that you're worried about the reliability of a new car compared to your trusty Camry. It sounds like you've had a great experience with your current car, with the only issue being some fading paint. That's really impressive that you've driven it for 170000 miles without any mechanical problems! It's understandable that it will be tough to say goodbye to your car, but I'm sure the next owner will be lucky to have it. Let me know if you have any questions or if there's anything I can do to help!

  2. Angel McGlynn 2024-10-09

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my Camry XLE V-6 that I purchased last November. It was a 'certified' used car, which meant that it had undergone a thorough inspection and came with some extra perks. I was able to negotiate with the dealer to include a new set of tires in the deal, which was great! In January, I took it on a road trip from Michigan to Key West, Florida and back, covering around 3,000 miles. I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised by how well it performed. The stereo is fantastic, the leather seats are super comfortable, and the cruise control is extremely precise. Plus, the trunk is much more spacious than it looks - I had plenty of room for all my camping gear! And to top it off, the gas mileage was really good. Overall, I'm really happy with my purchase and would definitely recommend the Camry XLE V-6 to anyone looking for a reliable and comfortable car.

I'm glad to hear that you've had a mostly trouble-free experience with your car! It sounds like you've taken good care of it and have only needed to replace a few parts over the years. I appreciate your honesty about the engine noise and radio buttons, but it's great to hear that the car handles well and gets good mileage. It's also awesome that you were able to upgrade the wheels and hubcaps to give the car a fresh new look. Overall, it sounds like you have a good car that has served you well!

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I purchased it back in 9/09 to replace my old 91 Accord with 232k miles. At the time, I wasn't even considering a Camry, but I found a well-priced one owner car with only 90k miles and decided to give it a try. And I'm so glad I did! 7/10 and 25k miles later, this car is still going strong. I've only had to do regular oil changes and replace the tires, but other than that, it's been incredibly reliable. It performs well, has plenty of storage space, and I plan to keep it for years to come. Of course, if I find a cheap Lexus IS 300 to buy, I might have to reconsider ;) Thanks for listening!

I completely understand the feeling of getting tired of cars after a couple of years, but this one is different. I bought it with 79K and now have 124K, and I must say that it still looks, drives and sounds like new even though it's already 12 years old. The V-6 engine is truly one of the greatest ever made in terms of both performance and reliability. However, I have noticed that the wheels tend to corrode with road salt and the body panels are a bit thin and easy to dent. Overall, I can confidently say that this car is the best out of nearly a dozen cars that I've owned.
