The Toyota Camry (/ˈkæmri/; Japanese: トヨタ・カムリ Toyota Kamuri) is an automobile sold internationally by the Japanese auto manufacturer Toyota since 1982, spanning multiple generations. Originally compact in size (narrow-body), the Camry has grown since the 1990s to fit the mid-size classification (wide-body)—although the two widths co-existed in that decade. Since the release of the wide-bodied versions, Camry has been extolled by Toyota as the firm's second "world car" after the Corolla. As of 2022, the Camry is positioned above the Corolla and below the Avalon or Crown in several markets.

In Japan, Camry was once exclusive to Toyota Corolla Store retail dealerships. Narrow-body cars also spawned a rebadged sibling in Japan, the Toyota Vista (トヨタ・ビスタ)—also introduced in 1982 and sold at Toyota Vista Store locations. Diesel fuel versions have previously retailed at Toyota Diesel Store. The Vista Ardeo was a wagon version of the Vista V50.

Etymology

The name "Camry" derives from the Japanese word kanmuri (ja:冠, かんむり), meaning "crown". This follows Toyota's naming tradition of using the crown name for primary models starting with the Toyota Crown (1955), continuing with the Toyota Corona (1957) and Corolla (1966); the Latin words for "crown" and "small crown", respectively. Maintaining this theme was the Toyota Tiara (1960) named after the "tiara" form of crown. The Atara trim level name used on the Camry in Australia since 2011 means "crown" in Hebrew. The rebadged Camry variant for Japan, the Toyota Scepter (1991)—took its name from "scepter", a royal accessory to a crown.

Common 2021 Toyota Camry problems

Based on complaints from owners of the 2021 Toyota Camry, several common problems have been reported:

  • Transmission Problems: Reports indicate an increase in transmission issues with recent models of the Toyota Camry. Symptoms include shifting delays, stalling, grinding or jumping during low gear acceleration, shaking while in motion, burning smells, and whistling sounds from under the hood. Decreased fuel economy can also be a sign of transmission problems, necessitating a thorough diagnosis and repair by certified professionals.
  • Starter Failure: Starter failure has been a common issue reported by owners, with instances where the car simply wouldn't start. This problem is often linked to a dead battery, alternator issues, or starter malfunctions. Proper diagnosis and repair, which may involve replacing the battery, alternator, or starter, are essential to address no-start issues effectively.
  • Powertrain Problems: Powertrain issues have caused accidents with the 2021 Camry, with reports of cars lurching unexpectedly, leading to collisions. Engine problems, such as engine leaks due to porous casting leading to oil leaks, have also been highlighted. These issues underscore the importance of thorough inspections and maintenance to ensure the safety and reliability of the vehicle.
  • AC and Heater Issues: Complaints have been raised about musty smells from the air conditioning vents in 2012, 2013, and 2014 Camry models. Some owners have faced problems with the AC compressor not working or the heater failing to blow hot air. While these issues are relatively easy to fix by replacing the affected components, they can impact the comfort and functionality of the vehicle.

These common problems reported by owners of the 2021 Toyota Camry highlight the importance of regular maintenance, prompt repairs, and thorough inspections to address issues promptly and ensure the safety, reliability, and performance of the vehicle.

  • VIN: 4T1G31AK3MU

At times it does compensate but it causes the car to go back and forth in the lane without settling out. There have been times when the car is steered to the right with no compensation and without my correction would have gone off the road. The lane warning system doesn't always work. If I did not have diligence when using the system I would no doubt have gone off the road and crashed. The dealer has not checked the car, they say this is how it works even on their personal Toyotas. These problems have been prominent and have existed since the purchase of the car in 2021.

Negative 2021 Toyota Camry car reviews

  1. Augustus Kerluke 2025-06-16

We recently rented a 2021 Camry and, as someone who has owned Toyotas in the past, I was disappointed with the fit and finish of the car. Unfortunately, the cabin was quite noisy and the controls and surfaces felt cheap, especially the door handle. Additionally, the seat cushions were too short for taller drivers. While I understand that Toyota may have been trying to cut costs, it was disappointing to see such a departure from their previous engineering standards. Although we won't be choosing Toyota for our next car purchase, I'm sure they still offer reliable vehicles. Overall, our experience with the Camry left much to be desired.

  2. Jaylon Rau 2025-06-02

The 2021 Camry Se has an acceleration delay issue that needs to be addressed. Despite being a newer model, it seems to be affected by a problem that was previously present in older models. The dealership has acknowledged the issue and has assured that it has been fixed in models after 2020. However, it is important to note that this issue can be dangerous and should not be taken lightly. If you have experienced this problem, it is recommended to seek assistance from the dealership. It is crucial to prioritize safety and take necessary measures to avoid any potential risks.

  3. Janick Luettgen 2025-04-16

The 2013 model was a great car, but unfortunately, the newer model did not meet my expectations. After driving it for 6-8 weeks, I started experiencing pain in my arms and hips, and my hands would go numb while driving. The design of the steering wheel forces your hands to be at 10 and 2, which can be uncomfortable for shorter drivers like myself. The seat design also caused discomfort, as it forces your spine into a c-shape and your chin to your chest. However, I understand that safety is a top priority for car manufacturers. I have found ways to make the seat more comfortable for myself, such as using pillows. Additionally, the legroom is not ideal for me, but this may not be an issue for everyone. I recommend taking a long test drive and ensuring that the car is comfortable for you, especially if you have back or hip problems. It is important to note that the car has some differences from the 2013 model, such as a smaller trunk and Sirius XM instead of a CD player. Overall, I suggest thoroughly testing the car before making a purchase decision.

  4. Merritt Zulauf 2025-01-29

I recently purchased a beautiful white Camry and had it accessorized with window tint, black alloy wheels, black rear view mirrors and door handles, black rear spoiler and black bumper guard. Unfortunately, the tires that were put on the car were cheap and resulted in a loud, bumpy, and vibrating ride. As a loyal Toyota customer with a 700 credit score, I was disappointed to receive an interest rate of 7%. This has forced me to not only deal with a bumpy ride but also to refinance. I hope Toyota can work on enhancing their loyalty incentives in the future. Thank you.

  5. Marley Botsford 2025-01-25

The suspension on this car was unstable and potentially dangerous. Despite the 'bumper to bumper' warranty, the dealer was of little help. As a result, I made the decision to cut my losses and sell the car. This was a disappointing experience, especially considering how fantastic my previous Camry SE was.

Positive 2021 Toyota Camry car reviews

  1. Lonny Hyatt 2025-06-23

I bought my 2021 Camry LE one week ago and have already driven around 400 miles. I'm happy to report that this car handles excellently and is very smooth over bumps. Even though I'm still in the break-in process, I can already tell that this car will easily get 40+MPG on the highway going 80MPH. Additionally, this car has plenty of power for a 4-cylinder. As someone who is 6'2

  2. Brown Feest 2025-06-22

I've been driving my Camry for over a year now and have clocked up 15.5k miles. Here are some pros and cons I've noticed. On the plus side, the fuel mileage is excellent, with the trip mileage on the highway sometimes reaching near 40mpg, and even over 40mpg on rare occasions. The acceleration is very good, especially up hills, and the naturally aspirated engine is a plus for those who keep their cars for a long time. Passengers have commented that the interior is comfortable and suitable for long trips, and the Radar Cruise Control is decent, although not perfect. The LE model has a soft suspension and handles okay. So far, I've had no mechanical issues. On the downside, the Radar Cruise Control cancels out when the traffic slows down between 18mph to 20mph, which can be frustrating in rush hour traffic. The fenders and quarter panels are almost pop can thin, and the paint is paper-thin and scratches easily. I would recommend getting a Camry that has a color like Gun-Metal grey that doesn't show off paint problems. The transmission is mostly smooth but sometimes it fumbles between gears, doesn't shift into the correct gear right away, and other times it downshifts or upshifts an extra gear too far. The driver's seat is uncomfortable, and I have to use a wedge-type seat cushion because the bucket seat setup is at too much of an angle, even if I set it as flat as can be. The driver's side blind spot is hard to see, and fuel economy decreases if the cabin air is set too high or if you go past 65mph. However, you should still get 32-34mpg if you have the air on full blast and you're driving at 75mph. You'll see fuel mileage at its best if the air is off and you're driving at 60-65mph. Lastly, I find the 10k oil change to be ridiculous.I always change my oil before reaching 5k, even if I have to do it myself. While some people may argue about the effectiveness of Blackstone labs, I am confident that the oil in my Ford F-150 with the 5.4l 3v Triton engine will pass the Blackstone lab test with flying colors. The truth is, some engines do not handle dirty oil well, and I do not want to take any chances with the untested A25A engine that uses light oil. The A25A engine has low-tension rings that are more prone to gumming up with dirty oil, which can lead to oil consumption and, in the worst case, cylinder wall wear. Compared to its predecessor, the 2AR engine, the A25A engine is more complex and expensive to fix. Therefore, I believe that it is better to change the oil regularly than to risk costly repairs. Additionally, I would not recommend the Bridgestone Ecopia tires as they do not handle well and are prone to going flat after 20k.

  3. Jordyn Prohaska 2025-06-05

Styling is great. Toyota quality is great. Engine needs more power. AWD plus all the safety technology is very impressive. The touch screen display is slow and outdated. The interior and trunk offer tons of room. I’m 6’3” and have plenty of room. Overall, it's a decent value with top-notch reliability.

  4. Jadon Heathcote 2025-05-07

Great handling and acceleration! I recently upgraded from a 2000 Corolla and, even though I was a little weary of all the new gadgets in current cars, the Camry made it very easy to adapt and get the most out of the driving experience.

  5. Eldred Olson 2025-03-06

We recently purchased the 2021 Camry with the inline 4cy after owning a Corolla for 16 years. Let me tell you, when you turn it on, it purrs! The performance of this car is what really sold me. It corners tight and is easy to control, with handling like a luxury sports car. The acceleration is beautiful and really packs a punch! The Camry also boasts many luxury features and comforts, a great sound system, and tons of safety features. It's an excellent buy that will hopefully last us another 16 years, just like our Corolla did. And to top it off, Toyota even threw in 6 years of free maintenance! How amazing is that?
