Chevrolet Impala problems

The Chevrolet Impala (/ɪmˈpælə, -ˈpɑːlə/) is a full-size car that was built by Chevrolet for model years 1958 to 1985, 1994 to 1996, and 2000 to 2020. The Impala was Chevrolet's popular flagship passenger car and was among the better-selling American-made automobiles in the United States.
For its debut in 1958, the Impala was distinguished from other models by its symmetrical triple taillights. The Chevrolet Caprice was introduced as a top-line Impala Sport Sedan for model year 1965, later becoming a separate series positioned above the Impala in 1966, which, in turn, remained above the Chevrolet Bel Air and the Chevrolet Biscayne. The Impala continued as Chevrolet's most popular full-sized model through the mid-1980s. Between 1994 and 1996, the Impala was revised as a 5.7-liter V8–powered version of the Chevrolet Caprice Classic sedan.
In 2000, the Impala was reintroduced again as a mainstream front-wheel drive car. In February 2014, the 2014 Impala ranked No. 1 among Affordable Large Cars in U.S. News & World Report's rankings. When the 10th generation of the Impala was introduced for the 2014 model year, the 9th generation was rebadged as the Impala Limited and sold only to fleet customers through 2016. During that time, both versions were sold in the United States and Canada. The 10th-generation Impala was also sold in the Middle East and South Korea.

Common Chevrolet Impala problems
The Chevrolet Impala has been a popular choice for many drivers, but like any vehicle, it is not without its common problems. One of the most frequently reported issues is transmission failure, which has been reported in some units of the 2011 Chevy Impala, as well as some 2005 and 2006 models. Owners have reported hearing a loud noise from the transmission before it failed, as well as stuttering and jerking as their vehicles slowed down. This issue can be costly to repair, with repair work potentially costing up to $2,970.
Another common problem reported by Impala owners is power lock problems, which have been reported in some units of the 2008 Chevy Impala. The locks may work intermittently or fail to operate completely. Replacing faulty components like the lock assembly, actuator, or sensor appeared to solve the issue in most affected vehicles.
Heater issues have also been reported in some units of the 2007 Chevrolet Impala. One owner said his heater suddenly stopped working because of clogged lines. Mechanics speculate that low-quality antifreeze may have caused the issue. Several owners also noticed cold air blowing from the heater vents while their vehicles were on idle. There are many possible causes for heater malfunction, including a faulty thermostat or head gasket leak.
Passlock problems have been reported in some units of the 2002 Impala. Owners were upset about getting locked out of their vehicle, their car not starting, and the security light being on.
In addition to these issues, some 2006 Impala owners have had problems with their engine's excessive oil consumption. Drivers report not noticing any visible oil leaks, which suggests that the engine was burning it. Replacing the oil pan is a common fix for this issue.
The headlights of Chevy Impalas manufactured after 2014 have also been reported as a common problem. In a design overhaul, General Motors attempted to improve its lights. However, these changes shortened the distance they cover, decreasing the overall visibility they provide. These designs also don't allow for proper ventilation, which allows condensation to build up. Too much condensation can cloud the housing unit, further reducing your headlights' performance.
These are just a few of the common problems reported by Chevrolet Impala owners. While these issues can be frustrating, it is important to note that many Impala owners have reported positive experiences with their vehicles. Regular maintenance and addressing issues as they arise can help ensure a longer lifespan for your Impala.
What is the common problem with Chevy Impala?
Some of the most common complaints about the Chevrolet Impala include transmission failure, power lock problems, heater issues, and excessive oil consumption.
Is the Chevy Impala a reliable car?
In fact, Impalas rank as the 5th most reliable vehicle out of 12 in its class, according to RepairPal. Some later model-year Impalas may still benefit from Chevy's original factory warranty, which provides three years/36,000 miles of bumper-to-bumper coverage or five years/60,000 miles of powertrain protection.
What year is bad for Chevy Impala?
On average, you should try to stay away from used Chevy Impalas that were built before 2013. Indeed, the ninth generation Impala's first three years of production from 2006-2008 were the least reliable years of this vehicle. However, other less reliable model years of the Chevrolet Impala include: 2009 Chevrolet Impala.
What year did Impala have transmission problems?
Transmission. Many early 2000s Chevy Impala transmissions are known to fail as they approach 100,000 miles. Drivers have reported heavy jerking and hesitation accompanied with loud noises before their transmission failed completely.

- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-18
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-18
- VIN: 2G1WB5EN0A1
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: I started my vehicle in the morning to let it warm up. I come back out to get myself and my son in the vehicle to go to work and take him to school. My dash upon entry had a check engine light on, and the message it displayed was "engine power reduced." I put my car into reverse, having no choice but to drive it and the traction control went out. My father in law pulled the code and it said something about the accelerator sensor. This is a known issue and recall in other models and I wanted to report it is also happening in my model.

- Date Complaint: 2024-10-13
- VIN: 2G11Z5SA9K9
- Components: SUSPENSION,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: Several different instances I've had my parking brake release as soon as I go to move after being parked for a long period of time. (I never set my parking brake to begin with so I don't understand why it keeps telling me it's released) Once it tells me it's been released, it's followed by a rough jersey of the car and then I'm able to move. Ever since I bought the car, there was a small shake. The dealer had to cover the front strut assemblies that were going out at the time of purchase; but since then the shake is unbelievable. I've put tires on, checked all parts of the chassis, and don't see any visible defects that would cause the shake. They have no answers or ideas of how to fix it for me. The faux metal ring around the cupholders on the center console has been cracking since the date of purchase and it finally caught on a cup and broke and has cut myself and my child several times. I had to end up ripping the trim off just to be able to use the cupholders. Lastly, the car seems like it's not gaining enough power sometimes. I keep up on services and general maintenance, and nothing seems to help. It sounds like the exhaust is leaking, and again, there are no visible defects when looking under the car.

- VIN: 2G1105S38H9
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: I have had this car for a few years and the evaporator core has failed, the car will blow air but it is very VERY hot air. The faulty evaporator core is a direct result of GM using cheaply made parts not inspected to the standard prior to installation into the vehicle. having previously owned this car in Hawaii and still owning it in a hot climate, the interior temperature exceeds well over 150 degrees Fahrenheit. This presents a serious safety hazard due to the potential for heat stroke, heat exhaustion and heat cramps which can effect the ability of the driver to control the vehicle appropriately. Children in the back seat, the elderly and even competent adults ARE AT RISK. NO ONE should be expected to pay to repair a safety hazard that GM has known about and ignored other than a bulletin the left many owners without a repair. This issue is clearly a serious safety concern and should be handled appropriately by GM.

Chevrolet Impala 2011
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-19
- Date Complaint: 2024-08-31
- VIN: 2G1WC5EM4B1
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: After getting into my parked car and starting it, the Stabilitrak warning message came on my display. This is the 2nd tike that this occurred. The first time it occured, my mechanic diagnosed it as a failed throttle body, which I replaced myself, (easy removal/installation). Now, a couple of months later, it occurred again. After doing some online research, it seems as though the position sensor on the accelerator pedal may be at fault. A lot, if not most cars today have a "fly-by-wire" system which replaces cables and such with sensors and motors. So, the accelerator, (gas), pedal controls the movement of the butterfly valve on the throttle body by sending a signal to the motor. I'm going to replace that... about $140 or so. I saw a YouTube video and the removal/installation is fairly easy. A lot of people are having this issue; maybe a recall is needed?

I have driven my car for about 50,000 miles now and I am generally satisfied with it. I believe that with any mechanical item you own, it is important to have some basic skills to perform minor repairs and avoid costly dealership or garage visits. So far, I have replaced the gas pedal ($80), the vent door blend control ($40), and the rear power door lock ($75) myself. I also had a friend replace the head gasket (about $300 including parts, as I heard other owners had the same issue) and had the transmission fluid changed ($100, which I highly recommend after 50K miles). These are all the repairs I have completed to date and overall, I am happy with my car. Only time will tell if my satisfaction remains. :)

If you're considering the 2013 Impala, you might have come across a review on Edmunds that could make you think twice. However, don't be fooled - this is actually a great large vehicle! It's definitely on the larger side for today's standards, but not overwhelmingly so. With an 18 cu trunk and the back seat folded down, it's able to carry a lot of cargo. The 3.6 twin overhead cam V-6 pulls like a modern V-8, and the ride is firm. I personally bought the LTZ and it reminds me of my 1996 Cadillac Eldorado, except the Impala has some extra features like a sunroof and heated seats. The gas mileage is good, averaging 21 mpg in traffic and 28 mpg on the highway with regular gas - which is impressive for a high power V-6 that doesn't require high test gas thanks to its direct injection (no turbo). Plus, with a $4000 rebate, it's an unbeatable deal!

I really appreciate the 28 to 30 MPG, especially since it's a real MPG at 80 mph. Living in West Texas, where the speed limit is 80 mph on I-10 west of Odessa, this is a great feature. Although I am a Chevy fan, I am considering trading in my Impala due to the high road noise and vinyl seats. However, I must say that it is a quick and nimble vehicle and fairly comfortable on long trips. I am disappointed in the road noise, but overall it's a decent car.

I purchased my car from the dealer less than two years ago. Unfortunately, it has not been a great experience as I have had to replace the engine due to financial constraints. When I first got the car, I noticed some issues with the transmission, which I had to replace within a few months. Despite keeping up with regular maintenance, I have had to replace several other parts such as the brakes, battery, water pump, radiator, steering rack, and thermostat. Although there was a recall on the airbags, I never received a letter to bring it in for repair. Overall, it has been a frustrating experience, and I would not recommend this car to anyone. However, I am now looking into purchasing a used Mercury or Ford, which seem to have better reviews even when buying older models than my 2010 Chevy.
Giovanni Fadel 2025-05-05
Vehicle year: 2005
I have a 2005 base model Impala with 210k miles on it. I've only had three minor issues with it: a fuel pressure regulator ($50), a catalytic converter ($250), and my cruise control hasn't worked in approximately three weeks. I also own two other vehicles, an Expedition and a 2011 convertible Camaro SS with all the bells and whistles imaginable. This may sound a bit crazy, but I actually prefer the Impala. The ride is so much more comfortable, not to mention it gets 29mpg. I drive it every day and it hasn't given me any problems (it's well maintained). I expect it to last at least another 130k. If you've had issues with this vehicle, it's possible that it wasn't cared for as well as it could have been.

The left front drive module was experiencing chattering issues, which were unsuccessfully addressed by three repairs costing $1500 at Banning Chevrolet and a $700 repair at an independent repair shop in Banning. Unfortunately, the problem resulted in a loss of trade-in value. As a result, I opted to purchase a Dodge Charger instead.
German Kreiger 2025-05-04
Vehicle year: 2001
This car has been a complete disappointment. In just 24k miles, I have had to replace the brakes and rotors twice, the thermostat twice, and the temp gauge keeps malfunctioning, causing issues with the air/heat. Even after installing a new exhaust system, I found out that it was recalled and GM only reimbursed me 60% of the cost. The car rattles between 55-65 and the performance is subpar. Additionally, the gas mileage is nowhere near what GM claims. Unfortunately, this week the transmission failed, leaving me with no choice but to purchase a new car. I strongly advise against even test driving this car. I have incurred significant negative equity as a result of this purchase and will be switching to Japanese cars from now on.

If you're looking for a car that will last you a long time, it might be worth investing in something of higher quality. While I've owned my Chevrolet for eight years now, I've had a few issues with it. The door locks have failed, the heat door actuators have stripped their gears and caused a knocking sound, and the electronic accelerator sensor has gone out. I've also had some oil leaks from various gaskets failing on the engine. While these issues have cost me a fair amount in repairs, I'm still grateful for the time I've had with my car.
