2000 Chevrolet Impala problems
The Chevrolet Impala (/ɪmˈpælə, -ˈpɑːlə/) is a full-size car that was built by Chevrolet for model years 1958 to 1985, 1994 to 1996, and 2000 to 2020. The Impala was Chevrolet's popular flagship passenger car and was among the better-selling American-made automobiles in the United States.
For its debut in 1958, the Impala was distinguished from other models by its symmetrical triple taillights. The Chevrolet Caprice was introduced as a top-line Impala Sport Sedan for model year 1965, later becoming a separate series positioned above the Impala in 1966, which, in turn, remained above the Chevrolet Bel Air and the Chevrolet Biscayne. The Impala continued as Chevrolet's most popular full-sized model through the mid-1980s. Between 1994 and 1996, the Impala was revised as a 5.7-liter V8–powered version of the Chevrolet Caprice Classic sedan.
In 2000, the Impala was reintroduced again as a mainstream front-wheel drive car. In February 2014, the 2014 Impala ranked No. 1 among Affordable Large Cars in U.S. News & World Report's rankings. When the 10th generation of the Impala was introduced for the 2014 model year, the 9th generation was rebadged as the Impala Limited and sold only to fleet customers through 2016. During that time, both versions were sold in the United States and Canada. The 10th-generation Impala was also sold in the Middle East and South Korea.

Common 2000 Chevrolet Impala problems
The Chevrolet Impala, particularly the 2000 model, is known for its dependability and functionality. However, as with any vehicle, there are certain common problems that owners have reported.
One of the most common issues with the 2000 Chevrolet Impala is related to the Passlock system, which is designed to prevent thefts by disabling fuel distribution to the engine when the wrong key is used. However, the Passlock system in older Impalas is known to have issues. Owners have reported being locked out of their cars, experiencing flashing engine and security lights, and not being able to start their vehicles. Resetting the vehicle computer or using a bypass module can help in the short term, but the problem usually requires checking the condition of the Passlock sensor, replacing the body control module, or installing a new ignition switch. This can cost upwards of $500.
Another issue that has been reported is related to the headlights in Chevy Impalas manufactured after 2014. In an attempt to improve the lights, General Motors made design changes that shortened the distance they cover and decreased overall visibility. These designs also don't allow for proper ventilation, which can lead to condensation build-up and cloudy headlight housings. Replacements may be necessary if the problem is caused by faulty wires, blown fuses, or bad bulbs.
The 2000 Chevrolet Impala's transmission is also known to have issues, particularly as the vehicle approaches 100,000 miles. Drivers have reported heavy jerking, hesitation, and loud noises before the transmission fails completely. Premature wear or leaking fluid lines are often the culprit. Transmission pressure control solenoids can fail prematurely, making it difficult and unpredictable to shift gears. If caught early, a simple patch-up might be all that's needed, but if left unchecked, the solenoid or even the entire transmission may need to be replaced, costing anywhere from $500 to over $3,000.
Chevy Impalas also tend to use excessive amounts of oil, requiring more to be added quite regularly. Rather than oil leaking out of their systems, most Impalas have been seen to burn oil, going through it much quicker than other vehicles. Impalas approaching or exceeding the 100,000-mile mark are particularly susceptible to burning oil.
In summary, while the 2000 Chevrolet Impala is known for its dependability, there are common problems that owners have reported, including issues with the Passlock system, headlights, transmission, and oil consumption. Regular maintenance and checks can help prevent or address these issues.

- VIN: 2G1WH55K2Y9
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: WHILE DRIVING, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY LOSES ALL POWER WHILE IN MOTION ON CITY STREETS AND STALLS. ON OCCASION, THE VEHICLE WILL STALL WHILE AT A STOP LIGHT DURING THE DAILY DRIVE. SOMETIMES, THE CAR CAN RESTART NORMALLY, SOMETIMES THE RESTART IS ROUGH AND THE CAR SHAKES, AND SOMETIMES THE CAR WILL NOT START IMMEDIATELY (ONE OCCASION REQUIRED A WAIT TIME OF APPROXIMATELY 30 MINUTES). THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN MAINTAINED OVER THE YEARS AND WHEN IT RUNS, IT RUNS FINE. ONCE THE INTERMITTENT STALLING BEGAN, THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO TWO DIFFERENT SHOPS, NEITHER OF WHICH COULD DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM (THE VEHICLE DID NOT STALL WHILE IN PARK, ENGINE RUNNING, VEHICLE NOT IN MOTION). ERROR CODES DID INDICATE THAT THE MAP SENSOR SHOULD BE REPLACED, AND IT WAS REPLACED, BUT THE STALLING PROBLEM PERSISTS. THE STALLING PROBLEM OCCURRED ONCE IN 2017, AND HAS BECOME MORE FREQUENT IN 2018, OCCURRING AT LEAST ONCE PER DAY. THE STALL MAY OCCUR IN THE FIRST FEW MINUTES OF DRIVING, OR AT 15 MINUTES INTO THE DRIVE, OR AT 45 MINUTES INTO THE DRIVE: THE TIMING OF THE STALL AND THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE STALL BEING INCONSISTENT. THERE IS NO SUGGESTIVE PATTERN. AS IT STANDS TODAY, THE CAR IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE, AND THE REPAIR TO RETURN THE VEHICLE TO SAFE OPERATION IS UNKNOWN.

2000 Chevrolet Impala recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 10 recalls for different components of the 2000 Chevrolet Impala.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE
- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 1998-1999 Chevrolet Lumina and Oldsmobile Intrigue, 1997-2004 Buick Regal and Pontiac Grand Prix, 2000-2004 Chevrolet Impala, and 1998-2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo vehicles. The affected vehicles were previously repaired under recalls 08V-118, 09V-116, and 15V-201 to address the possibility that engine oil may drip onto the hot exhaust manifold.
- Consequence: Engine oil that drips onto the hot surface of the exhaust manifold may result in a fire.
- Remedy: The remedy applied under recalls 08V-118, 09V-116, and 15V-201 did not adequately remove the safety risk. Under the improved remedy, dealers will replace the engines front valve cover and gasket. Vehicles that are covered by recalls 08V-118, 09V-116, or 15V-201 that have not yet received the original remedy will instead receive the improved remedy under the original recall number. The recall began on February 19, 2016. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300, Oldsmobile customer service at 1-800-442-6537 and Pontiac customer service at 1-800-458-8006. GM's number for this recall is 15757. Note: Until the improved remedy has been applied, owners are advised to park their vehicle outside since the fire risk exists even when the vehicle is unattended.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
- Summary: This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on July 3, 2014, that they are recalling 5,877,718 model year 2000-2005 Chevrolet Impala and Monte Carlo, 1997-2003 Chevrolet Malibu, 2004-2005 Malibu Classic, 1999-2004 Oldsmobile Alero, 1998-2002 Oldsmobile Intrigue, 1999-2005 Pontiac Grand Am and 2004-2008 Pontiac Grand Prix vehicles. In these models, the weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine.
- Consequence: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will install two key rings and an insert in the key slot or a cover over the key head on all ignition keys, free of charge. The recall began on September 9, 2014. GM's number for this recall is 14350.

I'm so glad to hear that you got the Impala when it was 3 years old with 24k miles off a lease and that it has been a solid performer ever since. It's great to know that no major repair work has been necessary, just regular maintenance. Additionally, it has decent fuel economy for its size/weight. You made a great choice with this one and have no regrets!

Hey there! I wanted to let you know that I was in an accident yesterday. We were going about 60 miles an hour when we hit a mini van, but thankfully we hit the brakes and skidded about 60 feet before coming to a stop. The best part is that no one was injured! I just wanted to share that I think my car is really safe. :)

As a realtor, I spend a lot of time driving with my customers. I have found that this automobile is particularly nice to drive in the winter, especially on icy and snow-packed roads. It holds the road well, which imparts a feeling of safety for my passengers. Additionally, it is very comfortable and easy to get in and out of. I really like my Impala and am even considering purchasing the 2003 model. The only downside is the road noise, but overall it's a great car!

It's so great to hear that you're enjoying your Impala! It sounds like it's been a reliable and efficient car for you, with great gas mileage and a spacious trunk for all your trips. It's a shame about the radio, but it's good to know that it was easily replaced. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!

I bought my Impala June of 1999. Ive had the car for almost 5 years only very minor problems. About 4 months into having the car my O2 sensor went out. I brought it into the dealership and they fixed it same day no problem. I didnt have another problem until 3 years later when my front driver side window stopped working. Just needed a new switch. Other than standard maintenance (new rotors and struts on the front after 50,000 miles) Ive had no problems in 87,000 miles. The mileage includes 3 trips from CA to OK and lots of trips from So Cal to Vegas. One time I made it from L.A. to Vegas in 3 hours doing 100mph on a single tank of gas!

I strongly recommend purchasing an extended warranty for this 2000 Impala LS. Since I purchased it, the car has had numerous issues, including frequent trips to the garage, complete replacement of the front suspension, and replacement of the brakes, rotors, and pads at only 15,000 miles. Based on my experience, an extended warranty would provide valuable coverage for potential future repairs.

I experienced some issues with the vehicle such as Tranny problems, seal failures, and constant electrical problems with the windows, blower motor, and wiper arms. Additionally, there were manifold gasket leaks. As a result, I decided to trade it in for a Ford Explorer. This experience has led me to choose not to purchase GM vehicles in the future.

i brought the car with 17,900 miles,,,,at 19000 miles the engine coolant came on, and loud metallic noise started while making turns, the dealer replaced the engine coolant sensor, and found no cause for the noise. at 20420 the engine coolant light came on, thank god i check when these lights come on, the coolant leaked in with the engine oil. it is now 15 days and counting, and the car is still at the dealer with the heads out, and still no clue as to why this happened, i truely will not waste my time with another domestic car, no wonder there are so many people buying toyotas!

The vehicle experienced several issues from the beginning, including problems with keyless entry, receiver replacement, and two computer replacements. Despite these efforts, the issues persisted. After consulting with GM, it was determined that the circuit board behind the instrument panel was the root cause of the problem. Additionally, a creaking noise was present when turning sharply to the left and right. The steering rack was replaced, but this did not resolve the issue. GM advised that the flex in the engine cradle was the cause of the problem. Further investigation is required to address the remaining issues.

Hi there! We've been experiencing some transmission issues since day one. The dealer initially suggested that we needed a new transmission, but after reaching out to GM headquarters, we miraculously discovered that it was actually an electrical or computer-generated problem. We were informed of this by someone other than the GM dealer. Unfortunately, we're still experiencing some problems - for example, when we give it gas at a stop light, the vehicle feels like we ran over a railroad track. It's been a bit frustrating, but we're hopeful that we can find a solution soon. This issue was reported on 6/23/2009.
