The Chevrolet Impala (/ɪmˈpælə, -ˈpɑːlə/) is a full-size car that was built by Chevrolet for model years 1958 to 1985, 1994 to 1996, and 2000 to 2020. The Impala was Chevrolet's popular flagship passenger car and was among the better-selling American-made automobiles in the United States.

For its debut in 1958, the Impala was distinguished from other models by its symmetrical triple taillights. The Chevrolet Caprice was introduced as a top-line Impala Sport Sedan for model year 1965, later becoming a separate series positioned above the Impala in 1966, which, in turn, remained above the Chevrolet Bel Air and the Chevrolet Biscayne. The Impala continued as Chevrolet's most popular full-sized model through the mid-1980s. Between 1994 and 1996, the Impala was revised as a 5.7-liter V8–powered version of the Chevrolet Caprice Classic sedan.

In 2000, the Impala was reintroduced again as a mainstream front-wheel drive car. In February 2014, the 2014 Impala ranked No. 1 among Affordable Large Cars in U.S. News & World Report's rankings. When the 10th generation of the Impala was introduced for the 2014 model year, the 9th generation was rebadged as the Impala Limited and sold only to fleet customers through 2016. During that time, both versions were sold in the United States and Canada. The 10th-generation Impala was also sold in the Middle East and South Korea.

Common 2016 Chevrolet Impala problems

The 2016 Chevrolet Impala has been praised for its serene and quiet ride, satisfying V6 engine, sleek, feature-rich cabin, big backseat and trunk, and excellent crash test scores. However, there are a few common problems reported by owners that are worth noting.

One of the most common problems with the 2016 Chevrolet Impala is related to its transmission. According to RepairPal, the three most common problems reported by owners are erratic shifting due to a faulty transmission pressure control solenoid, shifter failure leading to a stuck ignition key, and jerky or jolting operation.

Another issue reported by owners is related to the engine. Some components, such as the intake manifold gasket, can leak at higher mileage, leading to an oil leak.

The interior of the 2016 Chevrolet Impala has also received some criticism. Some owners have reported issues with the 8-inch MyLink touchscreen for audio, navigation, and phone functions, citing slow response times and an unpredictable interface.

It is worth noting that the 2016 Chevrolet Impala has received generally positive reviews from other sources. For example, it has received a 4.0 out of 5.0 reliability rating from RepairPal, indicating that it is above-average in terms of dependability in its segment.

In summary, the 2016 Chevrolet Impala has received some criticism from owners regarding transmission problems, engine issues, and interior materials. However, it has also received positive reviews from other sources, indicating that it is a reliable and dependable option for those in the market for a large sedan.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-04-04
  • VIN: 2g1145s39g9
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: 2016 Chevy Impala with 3.6L V6 has a design fault that causes failure of the evaporator core including leak of freon and inoperative Air Conditioning. Leak of freon and lack of air conditioning in 100 degree plus outside temps endangers the driver and passengers. Local auto service and local dealership both confirm failure of evaporator core. Issue has been identified by Chevy manufacturer and TSB issued N182186881 to cover repair/replacement at no cost to the vehicle owner. However, database is intentionally exclusive of VINs without cause or rationale. There is documented history of Chevy/GM declining to authorize service to affected vehicles on online forums and even at my local dealership. No warning. issue is Air Conditioning failure. upon first warm day in the spring, the AC blew hot air. This suggests legal dodging of addressing the issue by manufacturer. Manufacturer should honor their bulletin and verify all applicable 2016-2018 Impala with V6 are added to the database. Owners and potential owners must be informed of this issue that manufacturer has admitted to already.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-08-21
  • VIN: 2G1145S32G9
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: For approximately 2 months, my 2016 Impala LTZ, would display a message on the small screen in front of the driver in the dash, stating for the driver to, "press ignition button again to turn vehicle off." The worst part about it was this would happen very randomly whether I would be driving in city traffic, or be sitting in a parking lot at a local store. I took it to my local Chevrolet dealership. Five different times, because they were not able to get the occurrence to duplicate for them. They replaced the ignition, as well as other suspected parts with no resolution. Resolution. Ended up costing me over $1,200. That was the first time I took it in for this issue. The other four times didn't cost me anything because they hadn't fixed the issue. Come to find out it was a wire on the body control module that had some of the insulation sheathing removed, which then in turn caused the wire to ground out on the car's frame. Just thought I would put this out there in case anybody else goes through it because it wasn't real inconvenience.

  • Summary: On Fb 08 2022, at app 5:30 in the evening my 2016 Impala had a non-driver directed surge of speed. As I was slowing down to enter a driveway, the vehicle surged forward powerfully. I was able to press the brakes forcefully engaging the antilock mechanism. The vehicle shook as I continued to apply breaking force. It came to stop barely missing another vehicle parked in the driveway. I have no explanation for this dangerous episode. I had not used any type of automatic speed control. The car is serviced by authorized dealership: Hampton Chevrolet in Hampton VA. I was in the car with two of my grandaughters when the incident occurred. I was able to drive the car back without any problem, but I'm scared to drive it.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-01-18
  • VIN: 2G1115S35G9
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: I was driving down the road at night and attempted a right hand turn when my power steering quit. The warning light on the dash came on. I almost got rear ended by cars coming from behind. I called the previous owner to see if they had ever had this happen. They stated it had happened once. They said they turned off the ignition and waited about 1/2 hour then cranked the car and the problem was solved. That’s what I did and it worked. Since this is an intermittent problem the service tech could not help.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,LANE DEPARTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-06-12
  • VIN: 2g1145s34g9
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,LANE DEPARTURE
  • Summary: All instruments failed. After a couple restarts they came back on. Lane departure alert doesn’t work now. From a web search, I’m afraid it’s just the beginning. No, I haven’t taken it to the dealer; they charge for diagnosis. And it hasn’t been inspected. The problem doesn’t act up all the time. There are no warning lights, the system just fails. I have 50,600 miles on it. If you find what I’ve found in my web search, the cost of repair is staggering, especially for retirees. I hope you look into Chevrolet’s problem they’ve been having with the Impala.

  • Summary: I parked my car at work and worked a full day Saturday the 13th of November. I go out to start my vehicle and 3 warnings appear all at once. Stabilitrak, ABS, and power steering. Reading online I’m not the only one but with only 109,xxx miles it’s kind of BS that there’s obviously an engineering flaw with these vehicles and I probably will give a few car payments worth to get this fixed. I’ve owned this vehicle since 17,xxx miles

STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-08-21
  • VIN: 2G1145S38G9
  • Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: After starting car (and sometimes put in reverse), steering appears locked and message says to get power steering serviced. After putting back in park, power steering starts working. This happened multiple times last few weeks. Took car in to Joe Johnson Chevorlet (Troy OH) for scheduled next morning service. After 2 full days of excusses why they couldn't get to our car, we picked it up and took it to independent service shop. He test drove it and steering was fine. Got car back and next day it happened multiple times again. Took it back to independent to run code, which did not give exact problem. Drove car 1 block and power steering went out turning. Then again 1 block later. It is now parked and afraid to drive it. Chevy seems not to want to work on it and independent does not know what is wrong, said it could take him up to a week to trouble shoot entire system. He hasn't got back to me yet. HELP! Also, parking brake seems to engage by itself overnight. When starting car, sometimes it is on. We never use it. This may be related.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-05-11
  • VIN: 1G1145S33GU
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON OVER A YEAR NOW AND THE PLACE THAT I JUST HAD AN OIL CHANGE SAID THAT I SHOULD FILE A COMPLAINT. I BELIEVE MY AIRBAG SYSTEM IS DEFECTIVE. SPECIFICALLY WITH THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. I SEE MANY SIMILAR ISSUES ONLINE AND SOME HAVE BEEN RECALLED AND FIXED FOR FREE BY THE MANUFACTURER. THE CHEVY DEALER I WENT TO SAID THAT CHEVY SAID IT IS NOT PART OF A RECALL AND THAT I AM RESPONSIBLE FOR THE FULL COST OF REPLACEMENT. OVER $2000.00. I THINK THAT CHEVY NEEDS TO FIX THIS ISSUE AND COVER IT IN FULL. THE AIRBAG SYSTEM GOES ON AND OFF AT WILL. WORKS AND DOESNT WORK. ESPECIALLY ANY CHANGE IN TEMPERATURE OR A PERSON MOVING AROUND IN THE SEAT MAKES THE WARNING LIGHT GO ON AND OFF. THERE IS DEFINETLY A PROBLEM WITH THEIR SYSTEM AND/OR WIRING.

WHILE ATTEMPTING TO STOP THE BRAKE PEDAL SEIZED AND FAILED TO STOP THE CAR BEFORE HITTING ANOTHER VEHICLE. I AM CONCERNED WITH THIS ISSUE BECAUSE I ALSO HAVE A 2016 TAHOE THAT WAS RECALL (N192261050) FOR A BRAKE ISSUE. ACCOUNTS OF THE VEHICLES ACTIONS AT TIME OF INCIDENT ARE EXACTLY THE SAME AS WHAT WAS HAPPENING WITH 2016 TAHOE. WHILE THE 2016 TAHOE HAS UNDERWENT RECALL REPAIR, ITS STILL NOT BRAKING NORMALLY BUT IT DOES STOP ALTHOUGH ROUGHLY. THE DRIVER OF 2016 IMPALA WAS A PASSENGER IN TAHOE THIS PAST WEEKEND AND DURING A ROUGH STOP THE PASSENGER INDICATED "THAT'S WHAT MY CAR SOUNDED LIKE WHEN BRAKES DIDN'T WORK." I'VE REPORTED THE ISSUE TO INSURANCE COPY ASKING THEY THOROUGHLY INSPECT THE VEHICLE AND ALSO REPORTED TO MANUFACTURER.

Negative 2016 Chevrolet Impala car reviews

  1. Cameron Sanford 2024-11-28

Hi there! I recently rented this car and wanted to share my experience. While I found the car to be comfortable and handle well on back roads, I did encounter a few issues. The car was a bit difficult to get into and had poor visibility due to the rear view mirror and narrow rear window. Additionally, I found the engine lacked power and the transmission was constantly shifting. However, I did find a solution by driving in manual mode. There were also a few minor issues such as the center console cover being difficult to open and the drink holders being too small. Lastly, I accidentally changed gears a few times due to the electronic manual shifter being located on top of the gear shift. Overall, while I wouldn't personally buy this car, it may still be a good fit for others depending on their needs. Thanks for reading!

  2. Madison Sporer 2024-10-25

The Impala may not be the best car for snowy weather, as it tends to slip on the roads. It is recommended to use winter tires, which may be an added expense, especially if you live in the Midwest. However, the car is very fast and looks terrific. It is important to note that the front tires are too far forward on such a large car, which may make it harder for the car to pull its weight around. Additionally, the fuel pump has failed twice, leaving me stranded both times. The paint has also chipped away at the front end, leaving an unsightly black mark the size of my fist. It is unfortunate that the GM dealership did not want to pay for paint repair under warranty, as the car has very cheap paint. Despite these issues, the Impala is still a great car. However, if you are looking for a car that performs better in snowy weather, you may want to consider a Honda Accord.

  3. Afton Gislason 2024-09-06

The 2016 Impala has experienced multiple issues, including the replacement of the rack and pinion twice. Currently, it has gone into limp mode and is displaying a transmission trouble code. Additionally, the catalytic converter rattles quite loudly at start-up, which my mechanic believes is abnormal despite the dealer's claim that it is normal. Despite being in the garage 6-7 times in the past 6 months, these issues persist.

  4. Manley Hartmann 2024-06-24

I found this car to be quite uncomfortable to drive due to several ergonomic issues. The headrests are positioned too far forward, which can cause neck strain and headaches after driving for just half an hour. Additionally, the center console is too tall and far forward, making it difficult to turn right without having to contort your elbows, which is not only uncomfortable but also unsafe in case of an emergency. The rear view mirror also provides a limited view due to the high rear parcel shelf. While the interior materials are not of the highest quality, it is understandable given that it is a rental car. However, for a car that costs $30,000, it would be reasonable to expect a leather-wrapped steering wheel instead of one made of foam rubber.

  5. Kristian Walsh 2024-05-13

When considering purchasing a car, it's important to do your research and compare different makes and models. While this car may not come equipped with all the latest safety features like auto start, rear view camera, and safety warning systems, there are other brands that offer these features. It's important to take the time to carefully consider your options and choose a car that meets your needs. Additionally, it's important to be aware that some car dealerships may try to rush you into a purchase, so it's best to take your time and make an informed decision. Best of luck with your car search!

Positive 2016 Chevrolet Impala car reviews

  1. Arvel Dibbert 2024-11-26

I would like to give the car a 4.5 because it's almost perfect. The car is very roomy and fun to drive, especially in manual mode. I purchased the car with 31k miles on it and now I am at 96k. The most costly thing I have had to do to it is replace the tires and brakes, along with resurfacing the rotors. Other than that, the car has been fantastic. This car has seen mostly highway miles because of my route to and from work. It has also been on plenty of road trips, mostly across the west coast and southwest parts of the country. The car has many great features, including charging ports for smartphones inside the armrest and below where the cigarette lighter sits. Some have mentioned blind spots, and I have to agree, especially when looking over my right shoulder and looking all the way back out the rear window. The back seats sit high, making it a bit hard to see out the back window. Overall, the car is packed with many great features and plenty of power, with 305 horses making passing easy and moving quickly a breeze. For the price I paid for the car, I certainly feel that I have been given my money's worth. The car continues to perform well and strong, with no transmission issues or major problems. It really has been a great car, and I try my best not to drive it hard. It has been a very good car to own, and I continue to enjoy driving it daily. Thanks for reading my review. Enjoy...

  2. Noble Okuneva 2024-11-22

I recently purchased an Impala LTZ after experiencing constant transmission problems with my Chrysler 300. Although I have only owned the Impala for two months, I am pleased with its performance so far. I was able to get it fully loaded for a fantastic price, which was a great deal. While I have always owned Mopars, I decided to try something new and bought a Camaro last year for Christmas. When the transmission went out on my 2014 Chrysler 300, the Impala seemed like a logical choice. The only thing I wish was different is the name - I think they should have brought back the name Caprice instead of continuing to call it an Impala. However, I am aware that the Impala name has some negative connotations associated with it. I will have to wait and see how it handles in the rain and snow, as I have read there may be some issues with traction. I have also had some problems with the service department at my dealer, but I have since changed where I will get it serviced. Overall, I am very satisfied with the power and luxury of this car. I will write more if my opinion changes. One thing I have noticed while doing a lot of highway driving is that the paint does not seem to hold up well against rock chips. I never had this problem with my Chryslers. I also own a 2015 Camaro that I 3Md with clear plastic on the spots prone to rock chips, and I wish I had done the same for my Impala. I recently discovered that the back seat map lights do not work properly - only one of them works and they cannot be seen from the front seat. I will be taking it to the dealer to have it repaired, as well as for a recall on the incorrect fuse determination for the auto trunk release. Let's see how this goes!

This is an excellent vehicle overall. The exterior design is attractive and the engine is strong, paired with a solid 6-speed transmission. One major plus is the excellent interior room, as I am 6'7The mechanic replaced the master drive belt while the engine was open, costing about $1,700. Despite the early repair expense, the Impala still drives smoothly. Unfortunately, in August 2020, there was a major repair needed for the AC system, which cost approximately $1,800. The issue was caused by several coins slipping through the vent holes on top of the driver's side dashboard and short-circuiting the electrical wiring for the engine compartment area air conditioning. While this was not the fault of the car, it was the result of careless storage of pocket change. Perhaps a different design for the vents, such as a screen covering, could have prevented this issue. It is worth noting that this was originally a program car, so the coins may have been there since 2016. Due to these issues, I have downgraded the reliability rating to a

In the three weeks since purchasing the car, we have had the Bluetooth and side detection right side mirror fixed. Although the navigation panel was blank for three times in one day, we were able to resolve the issue. While cleaning the interior dash area, the CD info screen appeared on the info screen and we are currently working on restoring the original display. We have noticed some blind spots when going around corners and are taking steps to address this issue.

Don't worry about the name Impala waking you up! This new generation of Impala is stunning and high-tech! It has all the bells and whistles, as well as every comfort feature you could ask for in a luxury car. In fact, it's the best car I've ever owned!
