The Chevrolet Impala (/ɪmˈpælə, -ˈpɑːlə/) is a full-size car that was built by Chevrolet for model years 1958 to 1985, 1994 to 1996, and 2000 to 2020. The Impala was Chevrolet's popular flagship passenger car and was among the better-selling American-made automobiles in the United States.

For its debut in 1958, the Impala was distinguished from other models by its symmetrical triple taillights. The Chevrolet Caprice was introduced as a top-line Impala Sport Sedan for model year 1965, later becoming a separate series positioned above the Impala in 1966, which, in turn, remained above the Chevrolet Bel Air and the Chevrolet Biscayne. The Impala continued as Chevrolet's most popular full-sized model through the mid-1980s. Between 1994 and 1996, the Impala was revised as a 5.7-liter V8–powered version of the Chevrolet Caprice Classic sedan.

In 2000, the Impala was reintroduced again as a mainstream front-wheel drive car. In February 2014, the 2014 Impala ranked No. 1 among Affordable Large Cars in U.S. News & World Report's rankings. When the 10th generation of the Impala was introduced for the 2014 model year, the 9th generation was rebadged as the Impala Limited and sold only to fleet customers through 2016. During that time, both versions were sold in the United States and Canada. The 10th-generation Impala was also sold in the Middle East and South Korea.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-08
  • VIN: 2G1WB57K091
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: Driving home one night, August 8th, 2023 (thank goodness it was night) took a turn and got a service traction control light with a ding ding ding noise (I assume to alert me that something is wrong) and then it said engine power reduced which I assume happens because if your traction control is bad, it doesn’t want you slipping. Immediately called my father and he said to just drive it home and we’ll check it out. Not 2 miles later, my engine just stopped and it went into ignition. I couldn’t steer, I couldn’t stop because the engine was no longer running. I’ve driven a time or 2 (more like backed up) when I didn’t turn my key all the way and it was in ignition and that’s how it felt because it wasn’t on. This was very scary because I thought the car had just gave out. The engine just stopped and I got warning saying "STARTING DISABLED, SERVICE ENGINE THROTTLE " this is my first car, and after reading the complaints on it, I thought it was a recall. We ended up changing out the gas pedal, which made the problem go away right away, and I haven’t had issues with it since. Failure Mileage: 175K

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-07-31
  • VIN: 2G1WS57M591
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: My car has started slowing down abruptly and displaying Engine Power has been Reduced at random times, but has become more frequent. I have had an independent service center tell me it was the throttle body, so they replaced it. That didn't fix it, so they replaced the accelerator pedal/sensor. It still is happening and when on the interstate, it is so dangerous to slow down with no warning because you can get rear ended quite easily. This first started August 2021 when my wife and I started on a vacation and had to turn around and go home and is still happening, only more frequent. This past Saturday 7/16, I was traveling on Interstate 77 and the engine power kept cutting down about every 10 minutes, so I had to pull over and cut the engine off for a while until it reset. I can't trust it to go anywhere.

  • Components: AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS,SEATS
  • Summary: The service airbag light comes on in the dash. Whether someone is in the passenger seat or not, the light came one and it stays on most of the time. I looked up recalls for my vin, and it wasn’t included in the previous recall. (recall number 36110 passenger presence sensor and instrument cluster) But it has the same issue as all of the other 2009 Chevrolet Impalas recalled for the same exact thing. I purchased this car in December 2020 from the state of Michigan so I am the second owner. My vin should be covered under the recall. I need it fixed and it’s no okay that as dealership won’t cover my vehicle and it has the same issue. Why didn’t Chevrolet just recall ALL of this year, regardless of vin? GM saving money at the cost of mine and my families safety is not okay!

2009 Chevrolet Impala recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 5 recalls for different components of the 2009 Chevrolet Impala.

2016-07-05
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: AIR BAGS:SENSOR:OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2009-2010 Chevrolet Impala vehicles manufactured April 25, 2008 through February 16, 2010. The front passenger seat frame may contact and damage the wires of the passenger presence sensor module.
  • Consequence: If the wires are damaged, the passenger presence sensory system may fail to recognize that the passenger seat is occupied, disabling the air bag. Damage may also cause the air bag fuse to short resulting in a loss of all air bags and seat belt pretensions. Both conditions increase the risk of injury during a crash.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will double wrap the wires with anti-abrasion tape and replace damaged wires as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on August 1, 2016. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-521-7300. GM's recall campaign number is 36110.
2014-06-23
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION

In the affected vehicles, the weight on the key ring and road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine.
  • Consequence: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury. Additionally, a key knocked out of the run position will cause loss of engine power, power steering, and power braking, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will install two key rings and an insert in the key slot or a cover over the key head on all ignition keys, free of charge. The recall began on September 23, 2014. Owners may contact General Motors customer service at 1-800-521-7300 (Buick), 1-800-458-8006 (Cadillac), and 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet). Negative 2009 Chevrolet Impala car reviews

  1. Erin D'Amore 2025-01-03

The electronics system has been performing poorly, with multiple failures in the Chinese actuators responsible for the door locks, HVAC system, seat belt alarm system, DIC system, and the tire pressure monitor. Additionally, there has been an issue with a leaky head gasket. Despite only driving 8000 miles a year since the 2011 purchase, the need for repairs has been frequent. GM has offered a 10% discount on repairs, which is not satisfactory.

  2. Garth Ullrich 2024-11-17

My grandmother gave me my 09 Impala as a graduation gift just a few months ago, and it was a great car until last week. I'm not sure if others have experienced these issues, but I have, and it's making me consider selling the car. Sometimes the key won't turn, and I have to physically move the steering wheel and push up in the shifter behind the steering wheel to start it. Additionally, if I'm waiting at a light or stop sign for more than 10 seconds and then press the gas, the brake pedal sticks, causing the car to rev up and burn gas. The check engine light comes on for a split second when this happens. Has anyone else experienced these issues?

  3. Jessie Mraz 2024-11-13

This car may not be for everyone, but it has its strengths. While it may not have the same fuel efficiency as my previous car, it still performs well on the highway. The steering may take some getting used to, but it provides a sense of control and stability. The high seats on the passenger side and interior trim at the rear may create some blind spots, but with proper adjustments and awareness, they can be managed. The seats may not be the most luxurious, but they still provide adequate comfort. Additionally, the car's sleek design is visually appealing. Overall, while it may not be perfect, this car has its merits and is worth considering for those who prioritize certain features over others.

  4. Brett Hayes 2024-11-09

Hello! As an educated consumer, I did a lot of research on mid-price sedans and decided that the Impala would be a good fit for my needs. While the interior is a bit cheaply made, it's still functional, and I feel safe while driving it. However, I have experienced some issues with reliability and GM's support. Unfortunately, my car has needed several repairs, including a new torque converter, turbine shaft, valve body in the transmission, and water pump. Additionally, the A/C is starting to put out warm air. Despite these issues, GM's support (located overseas) has not been very helpful and has not offered any warranty incentives. I just wanted to share my experience with other potential buyers. Thank you for reading!

I drove my 2009 Chevy Impala for over 250,000 miles and it was a reliable car. However, after the car turned 10 years old, I experienced a few electrical actuator failures. Unfortunately, three (3) of the remote door locks failed and the cost to fix them was more than the car was worth. It turns out that GM decided to use plastic gears which become brittle and break over time. Additionally, the HVAC actuator also had plastic gears that caused the vehicle to loudly tick, even after the keys were removed. I had to pay $160 to fix that defect. The car would go into limp mode due to a faulty Accelerator Actuator sensor, which took me another $100 and an afternoon to fix. Despite these avoidable actuator failures, I still think the car was overall mechanically reliable. However, I am hesitant to buy a GM again.

This is my favorite car that I have ever owned! The combination of comfort and performance is just perfect. The fuel mileage is very good, considering there is a 303 HP small block V-8 under the hood. I have significant back issues, and I am very comfortable after a couple of hours in the driver's seat.

It's so great to hear that you had no real problems with your car over the 11 years you had it! I'm glad to hear that your nephew, who is a mechanic, was interested in buying it when he heard you were replacing it.

  3. Conrad D'Amore 2024-09-06

This is the best car I've owned since 2009! I've had three Ford products, but the Chevy has outlasted them all!

  4. Devyn Greenholt 2024-08-19

This car is incredibly spacious and comfortable, even for someone as tall as me (over 6 feet!). It's one of the few cars I've been in where I can't even reach the pedals with the seat all the way back. The dealership was fantastic and the price, warranty, and dealer support are unbeatable.

I replaced my 2004 Pontiac Bonneville with this Impala on 1/13/09. This car is a fantastic value for the price, with lots of nice options. It handles very well in the snow or on dry pavement, and the build quality is high. This car provides roomy, comfortable, economical, and reliable transportation.
