The Chevrolet Impala (/ɪmˈpælə, -ˈpɑːlə/) is a full-size car that was built by Chevrolet for model years 1958 to 1985, 1994 to 1996, and 2000 to 2020. The Impala was Chevrolet's popular flagship passenger car and was among the better-selling American-made automobiles in the United States.

For its debut in 1958, the Impala was distinguished from other models by its symmetrical triple taillights. The Chevrolet Caprice was introduced as a top-line Impala Sport Sedan for model year 1965, later becoming a separate series positioned above the Impala in 1966, which, in turn, remained above the Chevrolet Bel Air and the Chevrolet Biscayne. The Impala continued as Chevrolet's most popular full-sized model through the mid-1980s. Between 1994 and 1996, the Impala was revised as a 5.7-liter V8–powered version of the Chevrolet Caprice Classic sedan.

In 2000, the Impala was reintroduced again as a mainstream front-wheel drive car. In February 2014, the 2014 Impala ranked No. 1 among Affordable Large Cars in U.S. News & World Report's rankings. When the 10th generation of the Impala was introduced for the 2014 model year, the 9th generation was rebadged as the Impala Limited and sold only to fleet customers through 2016. During that time, both versions were sold in the United States and Canada. The 10th-generation Impala was also sold in the Middle East and South Korea.

Common 2020 Chevrolet Impala problems

The 2020 Chevrolet Impala has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to the headlights, electrical system, steering, and airbags.

One of the issues reported is related to the headlights, with owners stating that the headlamps failed to produce adequate lighting while driving.

Another problem is related to the electrical system, specifically the air conditioner tube, which can cause massive leaking in the carpets, leading to mold growth and electrical issues. This issue can significantly impact the vehicle's interior and cause health concerns for the occupants due to mold exposure.

Steering problems have also been reported, with the "Power Steering - Drive with Care" message appearing on the instrument panel, requiring excessive force to steer the vehicle after parking. This issue can be inconvenient and potentially dangerous, especially during parking maneuvers.

Airbag issues have also been noted, with airbags failing to deploy during accidents, which can lead to increased injury risk for occupants during collisions. This problem can be a significant safety concern, and it is essential to address it promptly.

The 2020 Chevrolet Impala has not had any safety recalls issued from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, but it is backed by a three-year/36,000-mile limited warranty and a five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty.

It is essential to address these issues promptly to ensure the safety and reliability of the 2020 Chevrolet Impala. Owners are encouraged to contact their local dealership or the manufacturer to report any problems and seek resolution.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-19
  • VIN: 2G11Z5S32L9
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: As I was driving my car in the interstate the car started making noises and began to shake and then it stop driving normally. I did my best to move to the curve and then called a towing truck to get the car. The car transmission stopped working properly. I conducted an analysis on this car in the internet and it has been written that the transmission has a manufacturer's defect. Also, the car dealer did a diagnostics test on the vehicle and proved that the transmission is not responding. The car dealer said the repair is not covered. This car is less than 5 years old. I was driving with an unsafe car. Data indicates that the transmission defects with a transmission fluid leak. I was in a dangerous situation while driving the car in the interstate. There were no warning signs and I believe this can be a dangerous situation for other consumers who may have the same car. The dealer and manufacturer does not want to cover the repair of the transmission since they said there has not been any recalls with the car. I want to put this complaint because I was at risk for something I had no control of. I contacted the corporate office and they told me to take it back to get a second diagnostic. In my opinion I have already done the diagnostic and they will not accept it unless is recent. The diagnostic was done in March 2024. Dealer wants me to pay for the repair. The transmission fluid leak is a problem that appears to be from the manufacturer because a transmission's life should last longer. The car has been undriveable.

There is a compartment at the front of the console that contains a cell phone charger. While the vehicle is in motion, outside air comes in this compartment. If the vehicle is stationary and the fan (heater/ac) is running, this also blows outside air through this compartment. During the colder months, this may offset the heater with cold air coming in, and in the summer months, the hot outside air may offset the AC. I took my car back to the dealership service department, and they compared it to two other 2019 Impalas on their lot. Both of the other Impalas had the same issue, and the dealership declared this to be

Your Premier Impala looks and drives great! It has great handling with responsive steering and brakes, and the comfy seats make for a pleasant ride. The music and info system are also top-notch. However, it seems that the 20” tires come with very noisy high performance Firestone tires, which can be quite bothersome. It's unfortunate that you didn't receive any help from Firestone or the dealer. I hope your new Lexus 350ES provides a quieter and more enjoyable driving experience for you!

I purchased a 2019 Impala with 34,000 miles in September and it now has 39,000 miles. Although it looks great, I have to say it's not as responsive as my previous 2010 Impala with the 3.5 engine. I drive conservatively and unfortunately, this car doesn't respond well to light touches. However, I was able to sell it to my local Chevrolet dealer for $1000 more than what I paid for it, which was a great deal considering the current inventory shortage. I then purchased a black 2011 Impala with the 3.5 engine and I couldn't be happier!

You can save a lot of money by purchasing a used Impala of the model you are looking for, rather than buying a new one. The LTZ or Premier models should not cost more than $30,000 brand new. While it is a nice looking car, it may not be worth the high price that dealers are offering. It is worth noting that GM is discontinuing this car, along with a few other mid-size GM cars. When considering purchasing these types of cars, it is important to be cautious as many GM cars have the same engine.

I have been dreaming of driving an Impala since the 90s and finally got the chance to rent one for two weeks while my main vehicle was in the shop. The exterior of the car is absolutely stunning, as we all know. However, when I first sat in the car, I was a bit underwhelmed. While the leather seats were nice and adjustable, the infotainment system and in-dash display were quite outdated and looked like something you could buy and install yourself at Best Buy. Additionally, the headrest was quite hard and uncomfortable, and the limited driver assists, aside from the blind spot warning, made it difficult to see anything other than directly ahead. Despite these issues, the car was quick, although the transmission was a bit sluggish and the brakes would get rock hard if the car sat for more than three hours. These issues were unexpected for a car with only 23k miles. For comparison, my primary vehicle is a 2020 Honda minivan, which has standard lane keeping assistance and adaptive cruise control, as well as nicer displays and more accurate voice commands, all for a similar price.

When I think of Impalas, I used to picture a big boat of a grandma car. But the truth is, grandma could have beaten most of us over the finish line! And now that I've owned three Impalas, I can honestly say that I loved each and every one of them. They are incredibly comfortable and have all the power you need. And if you're smart enough to buy the V8 model, you definitely won't regret it!

  2. Nelson Kub 2025-11-01

I purchased a brand new 2019 Chevy Impala LS V-6 from a dealer's lot five months ago. I specifically wanted a car with a trunk that had almost 19 cubic feet of space, and the Impala met my requirements perfectly. During my test drive, I found the LS model to be very easy to handle and the overall ride was smooth. I've been thoroughly impressed with the car's electronic features, such as the Bluetooth feature that allows me to play music from my smartphone through the dashboard speaker and the hands-free feature that allows me to receive calls through a speaker near the instrument panel. The instrument panel even displays the caller's phone number. Additionally, I appreciate the folding down rear seats that provide extra cargo space, similar to the old station wagons. The Impala also boasts excellent handling, low noise levels on the road, and a quick and efficient heating system, as well as a very good air-conditioning system. I'm satisfied with the gas mileage, which is over 19mph combined city and highway driving. Although I haven't had the chance to take the Impala on a long road trip yet, I was informed that it can achieve 28mpg or more for straight highway driving. The backup camera is a useful feature for backing into tight spots, but I prefer to also look out the rear window when backing up. The only issue I have with the Impala is that the rear view window is designed too high, making it difficult to see who is behind the car or coming from the side. Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase and would highly recommend the Chevy Impala to anyone in the market for a new car.Regarding the backup camera, it becomes useless when it rains as the rain interferes with the rear camera. Additionally, there are some criticisms I have with the Impala's interior. For instance, the material used is cheap and the sun visors come off the attaching mounted hook device easily due to its flimsy make. The device which controls the outside left and outside right mirror is also cheaply made and lacks differentiation to inform the driver that it is in a neutral position. One time, when I was trying to position the left outside mirror with that device, first the left rear window, and then the right rear window started to open. To this day, I don't know how that control affected those windows, and I probably would not be able to duplicate that phenomenon again. Apropos to the two outside mirrors, it would have been better if the LS model had the heated outside mirror feature. Now, whenever it snows or rains, I have to be concerned with opening the driver window, and clearing the outside driver's mirror. The latter feature should have been standard on the LS model. Other concerns are the car radio. It is exceedingly difficult to ascertain how to switch from AM to FM and vice-versa. The controls are very confusing on the radio, and the car manual is even more confusing. The same holds true for the control on the steering wheel, which is accessed in order to see the percentage of remaining motor oil life. The latter control is very difficult to access. In that regard, I'd like to compliment the manufacturer for the display pertaining to the pounds per square inch of the tires. I always keep that control displayed, and I am very appreciative for it. Now, I no longer have to bend down, especially on a cold winter day, and check the air pressure on each tire.I can easily check the tire pressure on each tire, both when starting the car and while driving on the highway. However, I do have some criticisms of the Impala's design. Getting into the car can be difficult at times, and I have to be careful not to bump my head. Additionally, accessing the controls of an anytime bank from the car window is challenging. On the positive side, the dashboard controls are well-displayed, and the headlights are very good at night. The compartments inside the car are nice, although the glove compartment could have been larger and equipped with a light. The rear seating compartment is particularly spacious and comfortable, as are the front seats.

Hello! I'm so glad to hear that you love your big, smooth, and comfortable sedan! It sounds like you got a great deal on your 2020 Cajun red sedan from Avis with only 35000 miles on it. It's wonderful that you appreciate the long-lasting engine, back-up camera, and large trunk. I hope your Impala lasts just as long as your 2003 did. Thank you for sharing your experience!

High end American car. Buy it! Buy American when you can!

  5. Camren Hand 2025-09-20

It's a great looking car and an outstanding value for the money. I recently decided to switch from expensive German imports and repairs and opted for a new 2020 Impala Premier. I got a fantastic deal and I am absolutely thrilled with my decision. The interior is incredibly spacious and comfortable, and the car is loaded with features. I think it's much smarter to invest in a superb vehicle at a great value rather than paying extra for a prestigious badge. These cars are built to last and the 350 V6 engine is a GM legend that just keeps going and going. The car drives superbly and handles well, providing a comfortable ride. I've even received a lot of compliments on the road! It's a classy and classic car that I plan on keeping for a long time. I'm done wasting money every three years on an expensive import. Plus, the fold flat rear seats are a little secret that make this car an even smarter buy. Overall, I couldn't be happier with my purchase!
