2005 Chevrolet Impala problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet Impala (/ɪmˈpælə, -ˈpɑːlə/) is a full-size car that was built by Chevrolet for model years 1958 to 1985, 1994 to 1996, and 2000 to 2020. The Impala was Chevrolet's popular flagship passenger car and was among the better-selling American-made automobiles in the United States.

For its debut in 1958, the Impala was distinguished from other models by its symmetrical triple taillights. The Chevrolet Caprice was introduced as a top-line Impala Sport Sedan for model year 1965, later becoming a separate series positioned above the Impala in 1966, which, in turn, remained above the Chevrolet Bel Air and the Chevrolet Biscayne. The Impala continued as Chevrolet's most popular full-sized model through the mid-1980s. Between 1994 and 1996, the Impala was revised as a 5.7-liter V8–powered version of the Chevrolet Caprice Classic sedan.

In 2000, the Impala was reintroduced again as a mainstream front-wheel drive car. In February 2014, the 2014 Impala ranked No. 1 among Affordable Large Cars in U.S. News & World Report's rankings. When the 10th generation of the Impala was introduced for the 2014 model year, the 9th generation was rebadged as the Impala Limited and sold only to fleet customers through 2016. During that time, both versions were sold in the United States and Canada. The 10th-generation Impala was also sold in the Middle East and South Korea.

2005 Chevrolet Impala recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 4 recalls for different components of the 2005 Chevrolet Impala.

2014-07-03
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
  • Summary: This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on July 3, 2014, that they are recalling 5,877,718 model year 2000-2005 Chevrolet Impala and Monte Carlo, 1997-2003 Chevrolet Malibu, 2004-2005 Malibu Classic, 1999-2004 Oldsmobile Alero, 1998-2002 Oldsmobile Intrigue, 1999-2005 Pontiac Grand Am and 2004-2008 Pontiac Grand Prix vehicles. In these models, the weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine.
  • Consequence: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will install two key rings and an insert in the key slot or a cover over the key head on all ignition keys, free of charge. The recall began on September 9, 2014. GM's number for this recall is 14350.

Negative 2005 Chevrolet Impala car reviews

  1. Guiseppe Barton 2024-07-20

I recently purchased one of the last 2005 models available at my local dealer, which happened to be on the showroom floor. I am really enjoying this car so far. It is very comfortable, runs exceptionally well (thanks to its 3.8L V-6 engine), and returns exceptional gas mileage. Although I rarely get this car on the highway, my 100% city commute consistently averages 19 m.p.g., which is impressive for a large 5-passenger sedan. While the dash may be a bit dated, the exterior still has a lot of appeal. One of my favorite things about the exterior is that it is instantly recognizable as a Chevy, especially at night when the taillamps are lit!

  2. Johan Abernathy 2024-07-03

I purchased this car used in 2005 when it was only a few months old. However, I have noticed a few issues that may have contributed to its rapid depreciation of $10,000 in just a few months. The A/C emits a musty smell, the bottom scrapes every time I turn into a driveway, and my brakes make a strange chirping noise (although the dealer says it's normal). Additionally, the transmission makes a strange grinding noise (also deemed normal), the dash pieces are separating, and the carpet pulls away from the lower trim due to being cut too short. Unfortunately, GM has refused to fix any of these issues. The interior noise is also quite loud, which concerns me as I fear it may be damaging my 20-month-old son's hearing. Furthermore, the car lacks ABS, which can be problematic when driving in snowy conditions. Lastly, the heater tends to overheat my right foot while leaving my left foot frozen.

  3. Vaughn Bins 2024-05-29

Although my experience with this car has been challenging, it is important to note that every car has its own set of issues. This car may require more maintenance than others, but with proper care and attention, it can still provide reliable transportation. It is important to address any issues as soon as they arise to prevent further damage. Overall, I am confident that with the right care, this car can still serve its purpose.

  4. Toni Quigley 2024-05-12

I have experienced several issues with my car, requiring three repairs in the past year alone, with the most recent repair costing nearly $1000. It is worth noting that I purchased this vehicle as a 'Certified Used Car' from a reputable dealer.

  5. Kristoffer Bahringer 2024-03-24

Hey there! Just wanted to give you a heads up to be careful of transmission and stained carpet. It looks like the blower fan box may have leaked in some rain water. Take care!

Positive 2005 Chevrolet Impala car reviews

  1. Regan Parker 2024-11-23

Great car for the highway! I drove round trip to Maryland from Florida and averaged 35 MPG while maintaining a speed of 70 MPH. There's plenty of room for passengers and a large trunk for luggage. Plus, the 3.4 engine provides more power than my previous 3.8 Mustang.

This is the first car you've ever bought and you love it. It's such a smooth ride and it gets great gas mileage.

I've always bought Japanese cars, but I recently found a great deal on a used Impala and decided to take a chance. I'm so glad I did! The car has been trouble-free and drives like a dream. The seats are incredibly comfortable, and my daughter agrees that the rear seats are great too. The trunk is huge, and the best part is the phenomenal mileage. The Impala gets better mileage than our Subaru, but it's much more spacious. The engine has plenty of pep and a satisfying growl that makes it feel like a hot rod. It's really the perfect combination of size, performance, and fuel economy. I would definitely buy another one. It's truly a great car!

Replaced spark plugs, ignition coil, battery, and unfortunately the catalytic converter. Your car is very comfortable. It handles fairly well for a big car and the sound system is great. The MPG is ok, but the 3800 series 2 is a very reliable engine. Overall, it's a fantastic car!

I had my first Impala in 2003. It was such a stable ride, with great maneuvering, acceleration, and comfort. When it was time to get a new car (my lease was up), I test drove several other cars, but I just had to come back to the Impala. It's like a tiger on the road and I always feel safe!
