2002 Chevrolet Impala problems
The Chevrolet Impala (/ɪmˈpælə, -ˈpɑːlə/) is a full-size car that was built by Chevrolet for model years 1958 to 1985, 1994 to 1996, and 2000 to 2020. The Impala was Chevrolet's popular flagship passenger car and was among the better-selling American-made automobiles in the United States.
For its debut in 1958, the Impala was distinguished from other models by its symmetrical triple taillights. The Chevrolet Caprice was introduced as a top-line Impala Sport Sedan for model year 1965, later becoming a separate series positioned above the Impala in 1966, which, in turn, remained above the Chevrolet Bel Air and the Chevrolet Biscayne. The Impala continued as Chevrolet's most popular full-sized model through the mid-1980s. Between 1994 and 1996, the Impala was revised as a 5.7-liter V8–powered version of the Chevrolet Caprice Classic sedan.
In 2000, the Impala was reintroduced again as a mainstream front-wheel drive car. In February 2014, the 2014 Impala ranked No. 1 among Affordable Large Cars in U.S. News & World Report's rankings. When the 10th generation of the Impala was introduced for the 2014 model year, the 9th generation was rebadged as the Impala Limited and sold only to fleet customers through 2016. During that time, both versions were sold in the United States and Canada. The 10th-generation Impala was also sold in the Middle East and South Korea.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-07-12
- VIN: 2G1WH55K229
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: I was driving along when out of no where my trunk opened. I got off the highway and closed it. At that time I was puzzled wondering who had been in my truck to have not closed it correctly. I knew I hadn't been in it in awhile. It wasn't until a few weeks later when the "Service Vehicle Soon" light on my dash came on. I went and had my vehicle scanned and was told about the TrapAlert system in the trunk and that is why my trunk popped open. I realize there was a post about this like a decade ago. But this is happening to me now and I can't find help for this issue anywhere. I've contacted both Chevrolet and GM support online as well as repair shops and no one seems to know what I'm talking about. GM told me they don't keep info on Vehicles older than 10 years. All the information online would suggest there is an actual sensor somewhere in the trunk although extremely vague on where it actually is and that it has a disable switch. Well, we've tore this thing apart only to find out it's some looped wiring that goes into the stereo amp in the trunk. I've yet to see a sensor yet for some reason my vehicle is still giving a single that someone is trapped in the trunk thus, popping the trunk whenever it wants. I've been searching high and low for information and already spent $1100 to repair issues to clear the dash light and nothing seems to work. Just a waste of time and money and considering this happened while I was driving 55mph I would think it obvious that its dangerous. Could we at least get some actual information without having to spend more than the Vehicle is worth. Smh

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-04-09
- VIN: 2G1WH55K029
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: ON APRIL 9TH OF 2017, OUR 2002 IMPALA LS WAS BROUGHT IN TO HAVE THE VEHICLE SERVICED DUE TO THIS RECALL: THESE VEHICLES HAVE A CONDITION IN WHICH DROPS OF ENGINE OIL MAY BE DEPOSITED ON THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD THROUGH HARD BRAKING, WHICH MAY RESULT IN AN UNDER HOOD FIRE. THIS WORK WAS DONE IN APRIL 2017: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE ENGINES FRONT VALVE COVER AND FRONT-VALVE-COVER GASKET WITH NEW PARTS OF AN IMPROVED DESIGN AND REMOVE THE ENGINES PLASTIC COVER AND PLASTIC OIL-FILL-TUBE EXTENSION. SUMMER OF 2017 WE HAD THE OIL AND FILTER REPLACED, AND AFTERWARDS LOTS OF SMOKE CAME FROM ENGINE. WE THOUGHT THE MECHANIC HAD SIMPLY SPILLED SOME OIL ON THE ENGINE. SUMMER OF 2018 OIL AND FILTER WAS CHANGED AND SMOKE FROM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT, WE AGAIN THOUGHT THE MECHANIC HAD SPILLED SOME OIL ON THE ENGINE. IN MARCH OF 2019 THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED, FACING DOWNHILL AT AN ABOVE AVERAGE ANGLE, AND OIL BEGAN TO SEEP OUT OF THE ENGINE AND BURN OF ON THE HOT EXHAUST MANIFOLD LOTS OF SMOKE AND POTENTIAL FIRE HAZARD. THE VEHICLE WAS RETURNED TO BOB MCCOSH, WHO HAD PERFORMED THE ORIGINAL GASKET REPLACEMENT IN 2017, TO HAVE THE ORIGINAL RECALL WORK INSPECTED. UPON INSPECTION A PIECE OF GASKET, ABOUT 2 TO 3 INCHES LONG, WAS FOUND TO BE PROTRUDING FROM BETWEEN THE VALVE COVER AND THE ENGINE. UPON FURTHER INSPECTION OF THIS GASKET, THE EDGE OF THE GASKET VISUALLY APPEARED TO HAVE BEEN CAUGHT BY THE BOLT AS IT WAS TIGHTENED AND THIS EITHER TORE THE GASKET OR WEAKENED IT SUFFICIENTLY SO THAT THE GASKET FAILED. SAID GASKET IS CURRENTLY IN MY POSSESSION. WE KNOW IT FAILED BEFORE THE OIL/FILTER CHANGE IN THE SUMMER OF 2017, BECAUSE OF THE AMOUNT OF SMOKE THAT ISSUED FROM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT AFTERWARDS. THIS RECALL REPAIR LASTED FAR LESS THAN THE 12MONTH/12,000 MILE WARRANTY. THE VEHICLE, TODAY APRIL 2019, STILL HAS LESS THAN 10,000 MILES SINCE THE ORIGINAL RECALL WORK WAS DONE IN MARCH 2017.

2002 Chevrolet Impala recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 7 recalls for different components of the 2002 Chevrolet Impala.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE
- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 1998-1999 Chevrolet Lumina and Oldsmobile Intrigue, 1997-2004 Buick Regal and Pontiac Grand Prix, 2000-2004 Chevrolet Impala, and 1998-2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo vehicles. The affected vehicles were previously repaired under recalls 08V-118, 09V-116, and 15V-201 to address the possibility that engine oil may drip onto the hot exhaust manifold.
- Consequence: Engine oil that drips onto the hot surface of the exhaust manifold may result in a fire.
- Remedy: The remedy applied under recalls 08V-118, 09V-116, and 15V-201 did not adequately remove the safety risk. Under the improved remedy, dealers will replace the engines front valve cover and gasket. Vehicles that are covered by recalls 08V-118, 09V-116, or 15V-201 that have not yet received the original remedy will instead receive the improved remedy under the original recall number. The recall began on February 19, 2016. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300, Oldsmobile customer service at 1-800-442-6537 and Pontiac customer service at 1-800-458-8006. GM's number for this recall is 15757. Note: Until the improved remedy has been applied, owners are advised to park their vehicle outside since the fire risk exists even when the vehicle is unattended.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
- Summary: This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on July 3, 2014, that they are recalling 5,877,718 model year 2000-2005 Chevrolet Impala and Monte Carlo, 1997-2003 Chevrolet Malibu, 2004-2005 Malibu Classic, 1999-2004 Oldsmobile Alero, 1998-2002 Oldsmobile Intrigue, 1999-2005 Pontiac Grand Am and 2004-2008 Pontiac Grand Prix vehicles. In these models, the weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine.
- Consequence: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will install two key rings and an insert in the key slot or a cover over the key head on all ignition keys, free of charge. The recall began on September 9, 2014. GM's number for this recall is 14350.

SOME OF THESE VEHICLES HAVE A CONDITION IN WHICH DROPS OF ENGINE OIL MAY BE DEPOSITED ON THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD THROUGH HARD BRAKING.
- Consequence: IF THE MANIFOLD IS HOT ENOUGH AND THE OIL RUNS BELOW THE HEAT SHIELD, IT MAY IGNITE INTO A SMALL FLAME AND MAY SPREAD TO THE PLASTIC SPARK PLUG WIRE CHANNEL AND BEYOND INCREASING THE RISK OF AN ENGINE COMPARTMENT FIRE.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE ENGINES FRONT VALVE COVER AND FRONT-VALVE-COVER GASKET WITH NEW PARTS OF AN IMPROVED DESIGN AND REMOVE THE ENGINES PLASTIC COVER AND PLASTIC OIL-FILL-TUBE EXTENSION, FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING MAY 2016. I really love this car! My family and I searched for 6 months and seriously considered the new Nissan Altima, but the sticker price was $8,000 more than the look I wanted, which this LS was able to provide. The Honda Accord was my next choice, but the 4-door look was blah and the 2-door, although more jazzy looking, would not have served my family's needs. Additionally, the interior was smaller than what I was comfortable with. The LS met all my needs and desires for a reasonable price compared to the competition. I previously drove a Continental and I am just as happy with this vehicle. It drives almost as cushiony as the Continental but with a sportier feel.

This is a great car overall, but the ride quality could be improved. While it's comfortable and responsive on short trips, it can be a bit bumpy on longer journeys. I've noticed that I need to be careful when entering driveways, as the car tends to bottom out frequently. However, it gets impressive fuel economy (30 mpg) on the highway for its engine size. The car handles very well and the brakes are responsive and reliable. Inside, the car feels safe and the seats are comfortable. There's also plenty of room for three six-foot adults in the back, and the trunk is spacious. My family loves the car's safety features.

I've only had this car for four days and I drove 220 miles, but unfortunately my right knee and leg were hurting all night. It seems that this car is not designed for people who are 5'7

The Edmunds reviewer's experience with the Impala seems to differ from mine. In my opinion, this car is fantastic. It handles great, has plenty of room, and comes with all the options you could imagine, all for under 23k. I was impressed with how little body roll it had and how firm the steering was, while still being very quiet and smooth. If you take the time to do your research and take it for a test drive, I'm sure you'll be sold too. What's not to love? It's as safe as a Volvo, almost as spacious as a Crown Vic inside, has the gas mileage of a compact car, and the styling of a BMW/Saab/Volvo, all while being 10k less than a mid-sized SUV. Plus, it has a better ride than a 500 series Mercedes SEL.

I purchased this car with 162,000 kms on it, and it has now clocked almost 300,000 kms. I must say, this car handles corners like a sports car and brakes as well as, if not better than, most cars on the road. It's important to note that it was previously used and abused by the Ontario Provincial Police. This car can easily surpass the speed limit without any hesitation. I have taken it on three trips to Florida from Ontario, and it has never let me down. I have only had to replace the battery, two front wheel bearings, and a set of control arm bushings. I change the transmission oil and filter every spring to keep it in top condition. I probably drive it harder than the police did, but I still love it even though it's a plain Jane. This car never fails to surprise me, especially when it comes to acceleration from a stop.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2006 Impala. I bought it with 48k miles and have been driving it for quite some time now. It has been a reliable car for me, but I have had to replace a few things along the way. I've replaced my struts, and my driver side mirror is a bit wobbly. I also had to replace my headlights due to moisture in the lamps. Unfortunately, I recently discovered that my transmission is going out at 135k miles, which is a bit disappointing. I was hoping to drive it well into the 160k mile range, but it looks like it's time for a new car. My husband is trying to convince me to get another Impala, but I'm considering other options as well. I've been reading reviews and I may be turning to Toyota, but I'm definitely not considering a Ford at this point. Thanks for listening!

The ride and handling are very good, making it a comfortable choice even for very long trips. The interior is also very roomy, providing ample space for rear seat passengers, and the trunk is quite spacious. However, it may not perform as well in wet or snowy conditions. While there have been some mechanical problems despite meticulous maintenance, the cosmetic issues I have experienced are not due to abuse or over-use. Overall, my experience with this automobile has been mixed, and it has been more expensive to maintain than expected. I would not consider purchasing another one. Some items that have been replaced include a new computer, catalytic converter, rear exterior door handles, wiring, and trim items, and there are still several problems that need to be addressed.

Although I have experienced some issues with my car, such as the security system, service traction system, window motor, and catalytic converter, I believe that these are isolated incidents. It is important to note that these issues were resolved promptly and efficiently. While I understand that some may have had negative experiences with this car, I remain confident in its overall quality and performance.

I had the 3.8 LS with Leather interior, fully loaded. Although the motor was strong and had good acceleration, I found the ride to be too soft, especially with 4 adults in the car. Unfortunately, I experienced some issues with the interior parts breaking easily and some unsightly gaps in the panels. Additionally, the car did not perform well in the snow, and the traction control only made matters worse. While the Leather seats were comfortable around town, they left my legs numb on long trips. When I traded the car in, I noticed the transmission felt like it was slipping with only 70,000 miles on the car. Despite these issues, the exterior of the car was nice, but I did have some trouble with the headlight seals. Overall, my experience with the car was mixed, but I appreciated its strengths.
