The Chevrolet Impala (/ɪmˈpælə, -ˈpɑːlə/) is a full-size car that was built by Chevrolet for model years 1958 to 1985, 1994 to 1996, and 2000 to 2020. The Impala was Chevrolet's popular flagship passenger car and was among the better-selling American-made automobiles in the United States.

For its debut in 1958, the Impala was distinguished from other models by its symmetrical triple taillights. The Chevrolet Caprice was introduced as a top-line Impala Sport Sedan for model year 1965, later becoming a separate series positioned above the Impala in 1966, which, in turn, remained above the Chevrolet Bel Air and the Chevrolet Biscayne. The Impala continued as Chevrolet's most popular full-sized model through the mid-1980s. Between 1994 and 1996, the Impala was revised as a 5.7-liter V8–powered version of the Chevrolet Caprice Classic sedan.

In 2000, the Impala was reintroduced again as a mainstream front-wheel drive car. In February 2014, the 2014 Impala ranked No. 1 among Affordable Large Cars in U.S. News & World Report's rankings. When the 10th generation of the Impala was introduced for the 2014 model year, the 9th generation was rebadged as the Impala Limited and sold only to fleet customers through 2016. During that time, both versions were sold in the United States and Canada. The 10th-generation Impala was also sold in the Middle East and South Korea.

Common 2003 Chevrolet Impala problems

The Chevrolet Impala, introduced in 2003, has been a popular choice for consumers due to its spacious interior, solid crash test scores, and powerful V6 engines. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems.

One of the most frequently reported issues is related to the Passlock system, which has been a problem in the 2002 and 2003 models. Owners have reported getting locked out of their vehicles, their check engine and security lights going on and off, and experiencing difficulty starting their vehicle. Passlock system issues can be complicated, so it's best to have a professional diagnose the problem. Replacing the body control module or bypassing the ignition sensor appeared to solve the issue on most affected vehicles. Repairs for this type of issue can cost as much as $520.

Another common problem is coolant leaks due to a bad intake manifold gasket. This causes frequent overheating, which may result in more serious engine problems. This problem may recur, and some owners had to replace their intake manifold gasket more than once. You may spend as much as $820 to fix this type of issue.

The 2003 Impala has also been reported to have issues with the windshield wiper shaft being stripped, causing a windshield leak that may short out the radio. This issue can be particularly problematic in inclement weather, and repairs can be costly.

In addition to these issues, the 2003 Impala has been criticized for its low-rent interior and pronounced road noise, which can make for an uncomfortable driving experience. However, the vehicle's entertainment technology is decent for a car from 2003, with both models coming with a six-speaker sound system and a cassette player. Safety technology is also basic but not bad considering the age of the car, with features such as traction control, daytime running lamps, and four-wheel anti-lock brakes.

Despite these common problems, the 2003 Chevrolet Impala is still a reliable vehicle, with many owners reporting trouble-free driving experiences. With fair market prices starting as low as $2,310, it can be a good value for those in the market for a used vehicle. However, potential buyers should be aware of these common issues and factor in the cost of potential repairs when considering purchasing a 2003 Impala.

In conclusion, while the 2003 Chevrolet Impala is a reliable vehicle overall, it is not without its common problems. Issues such as Passlock system problems, coolant leaks, and windshield wiper shaft issues can be costly to repair and may impact the overall driving experience. However, with proper maintenance and awareness of these issues, the 2003 Impala can still be a good choice for those in the market for a used vehicle.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-01-01
  • VIN: 2G1WF52E839
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: I have a 2003 Chevrolet Impala! Look it up on the internet, and you will see that the failure rate of the GM passlock system is huge, and massively expensive to repair! In fact from a inside relative, says GM makes more money in parts, and repairs than on selling a new vehicle! This is without doubt a premeditated flow to rip off the public! This is in fact insensitive for GM to engineer a constant, and ongoing failure of the of its vehicles! This passlock defect can not be fixed by accessing the cars computer! It should be that easy but it is not a option. Being stranded by this defect is life threatening. The problem is the Passlock system that has failed for me, and hundreds of thousands owners of GM vehicles, and tens of millions of dollars in repairs that GM should be forced to repair, at no costs, past, and present to the owners, and including towing, and a rental car! The passlock defect, and failure completely locks up the cars entire electrical system, so the owner can not start, or even open the trunk of their car in a emergency! After it happens you can’t even access the car radio to reset back to the original factory functions! Even if you disconnect the battery, to get this accomplished, it will be a short while before it happens again! It is crazy expensive just to diagnose this problem! Please note that this is not just a Impala problem! This passlock defect falling involves dozens of Models of all types, old, and new. These vehicles number in the many hundreds of thousands over decades! Many tens of millions of dollars in repairs, and hundreds of thousands waiting to happen! This needs to be addressed at a government level! We won’t to see some consumer protection, and Justice! Thank you for your time, and consideration! VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-10-12
  • VIN: 2G1WH55K439
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: Traveling at 58 mph in Cruise Control for 10 minutes I increased speed with 4-6 rapid pushes of the Accelerate button in less than 1.5 seconds, Each push is 1 mph. I have never pushed it that rapidly. The engine acted as if I floored the accelerator & the transmission went from 4th to 3rd gear, speed went to 70+ and rapidly increasing. I stepped on the break pedal several times to disable CC but no help, I switched the CC button to the off position several times, no help. Now at 85+ and accelerating hard in wide open throttle (WOT). I shift to Neutral and turned the ignition to the ACC position to retain steering ability as the engine was RPM'ing out to destruction. I coasted off the highway and set ignition to off. After a few minutes I turned engine on and it rev'd out of control, still WOT. Ignition off did not reset the problem. I opened the hood to disconnected the battery & I observe that neither the CC or accelerator cables are not holding the throttle body (TB) in "WOT", it was closed in an idle position. It is not mechanical. I disconnected the battery for several minutes and then the system operated normally. I have used CC a million times but never have pushed that accel button that fast. I served 7 years as a Reactor Operation onboard US navy Fast attack Submarines, have torn apart and assemble mechanical and electrical reactor systems. I have been a Hardware Engineer for 40+ yrs and have 10 US patents in fault tolerant server design. I've been a car guy since 5 yrs old. This is a problem with the cars computer or its code. The rapid pushing of the CC accel button is key here as well as memory retaining this CC state after Key OFF. Its a good thing I experienced with many hard casualty life and death situations while serving, because my car was accelerating out of control, my experience and training in the US Military taught me to keep cool and think. You really should investigate this. I can tell you more specifics but I'm character limited.

2003 Chevrolet Impala recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 8 recalls for different components of the 2003 Chevrolet Impala.

2015-10-26
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 1998-1999 Chevrolet Lumina and Oldsmobile Intrigue, 1997-2004 Buick Regal and Pontiac Grand Prix, 2000-2004 Chevrolet Impala, and 1998-2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo vehicles. The affected vehicles were previously repaired under recalls 08V-118, 09V-116, and 15V-201 to address the possibility that engine oil may drip onto the hot exhaust manifold.
  • Consequence: Engine oil that drips onto the hot surface of the exhaust manifold may result in a fire.
  • Remedy: The remedy applied under recalls 08V-118, 09V-116, and 15V-201 did not adequately remove the safety risk. Under the improved remedy, dealers will replace the engine’s front valve cover and gasket. Vehicles that are covered by recalls 08V-118, 09V-116, or 15V-201 that have not yet received the original remedy will instead receive the improved remedy under the original recall number. The recall began on February 19, 2016. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300, Oldsmobile customer service at 1-800-442-6537 and Pontiac customer service at 1-800-458-8006. GM's number for this recall is 15757. Note: Until the improved remedy has been applied, owners are advised to park their vehicle outside since the fire risk exists even when the vehicle is unattended.
2014-07-03
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
  • Summary: This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on July 3, 2014, that they are recalling 5,877,718 model year 2000-2005 Chevrolet Impala and Monte Carlo, 1997-2003 Chevrolet Malibu, 2004-2005 Malibu Classic, 1999-2004 Oldsmobile Alero, 1998-2002 Oldsmobile Intrigue, 1999-2005 Pontiac Grand Am and 2004-2008 Pontiac Grand Prix vehicles. In these models, the weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine.
  • Consequence: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will install two key rings and an insert in the key slot or a cover over the key head on all ignition keys, free of charge. The recall began on September 9, 2014. GM's number for this recall is 14350.

  • Summary: GENERAL MOTORS IS RECALLING 1,497,516 MY 1997-2003 BUICK REGAL, MY 1998-2003 CHEVROLET LUMINA, MONTE CARLO AND IMPALA, MY 1998-1999 OLDSMOBILE INTRIGUE, MY 1997-2003 PONTIAC GRAND PRIX VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A 3.8L V6 NATURALLY ASPIRATED ENGINE. SOME OF THESE VEHICLES HAVE A CONDITION IN WHICH DROPS OF ENGINE OIL MAY BE DEPOSITED ON THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD THROUGH HARD BRAKING.
  • Consequence: IF THE MANIFOLD IS HOT ENOUGH AND THE OIL RUNS BELOW THE HEAT SHIELD, IT MAY IGNITE INTO A SMALL FLAME AND MAY SPREAD TO THE PLASTIC SPARK PLUG WIRE CHANNEL AND BEYOND INCREASING THE RISK OF AN ENGINE COMPARTMENT FIRE.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE ENGINE’S FRONT VALVE COVER AND FRONT-VALVE-COVER GASKET WITH NEW PARTS OF AN IMPROVED DESIGN AND REMOVE THE ENGINE’S PLASTIC COVER AND PLASTIC OIL-FILL-TUBE EXTENSION, FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING MAY 2016. Negative 2003 Chevrolet Impala car reviews

  1. Alek Jacobs 2024-11-26

I purchased the car brand new and have not put many miles on it. Despite this, I am extremely disappointed with the car's performance. While it initially rode nicely, it has since deteriorated. However, the car does have ample power and the drivetrain has not presented any issues. Unfortunately, the brakes are subpar and the steering shaft clunking, a common problem, has caused me to develop a strong dislike for this car. Additionally, the rotors are severely warped and the rear rotors are grooved and rusty, which may be affecting their functionality.

  2. Porter Hermann 2024-11-17

I purchased this car as a used fleet car that was well taken care of before it came into my possession. My step-mom's company sold it to me for a great deal, which I was thrilled about. While the car has been reliable for the most part, I have experienced some issues with the engine after hitting 125000 miles. The heads have come off the rocker arms several times, which has been a bit frustrating. Additionally, I have noticed that the plastic body parts don't hold up well in colder temperatures, as I had a door handle crack off on a particularly chilly morning. Despite these issues, I still believe that the car is a good choice overall.

  3. Godfrey Kessler 2024-10-08

We purchased this car brand new in November of 2002 as we required a spacious family sedan and the Impala offered the best value at that time. Although I was not a Chevy enthusiast, the car was too good to ignore given our financial situation at the time. It is equipped with the 3.4L motor. Later, I discovered that these motors have a design flaw that can cause significant engine damage if not addressed immediately. The repair cost for the lower intake is $850, but fortunately, GM covered it as the car was still under warranty. Looking back, I should have questioned the oily slime under my father's radiator cap in his Grand Am, which also had the same problem. However, I did not, and he paid the $850. If it lasts until 200k miles, it will still be a great deal and comfortable.

  4. Darron Friesen 2024-09-22

The car is spacious and comfortable, but unfortunately, the repair is quite expensive. The entire intake is made of plastic, which results in a loss of power and a hissing noise. My car won't rev up past 3k rpms and struggles to make it up a hill. Although many people have experienced similar issues, the Chevy dealership has not issued a recall for their poorly designed intake. It can be frustrating when companies don't take responsibility for their mistakes. In my experience, I would not recommend buying a Chevy. However, I understand that everyone's experience may differ.

  5. Cesar Anderson 2024-09-20

My family has always been a Chevy patron. I really liked the looks, drive and amenities of my Impala, but unfortunately, in the last 2 years, I have had to replace several parts, including the catalytic converter ($739), the solenoid ($875), the intake manifold ($783), and the wheel bearing. It has been quite frustrating and disappointing, and I am not sure if I would consider purchasing another GM car in the future.

Positive 2003 Chevrolet Impala car reviews

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my Impala. I've had it for about 3 1/2 years now and my wife and I absolutely love it! We've put about 111,000 miles on it and it's still going strong. One of the things we love about it is the spacious interior and trunk, which makes it perfect for road trips. Plus, it has a smooth ride on the highway and handles really well. The fuel mileage is also impressive, especially with the 3.4 V-6 engine. When I first got it, I was getting around 29mpg on the highway, but after switching to full synthetic motor oil, I noticed an increase in mileage to 31-32 mpg. And the best part is that the engine still runs like new thanks to the synthetic oil. Overall, I'm really happy with my Impala and would definitely buy it again. Thanks for listening!

I have thoroughly enjoyed my Impala. Despite a recent issue with the cruise control and interior fan, I have had no problems with the car. In fact, my wife and I prefer it over her Maxima, which has surprisingly had a number of issues. I have even considered trading in her Maxima for another Impala, as I am very satisfied with my LS model without leather or a sunroof.

  3. Nikko Fritsch 2024-08-22

I love my Impala! I've had it for two years and have had no major problems. Although the brakes went bad at one point, I bought the car with 77,000 miles and it now has almost 116,000 and still runs great! I'm not usually fond of American cars, but Chevys are the best! I would definitely buy the same car again, as long as the mileage is lower.

  4. Jevon Koss 2024-08-15

I've only owned the Impala for about a month now and I'm really happy with the gas mileage. It averages between 23 and 29 MPG and I can't wait to take it out on the open highway. It handles great on curvey roads. While the interior could be a little more plush, it's still comfortable enough for me.

  5. Gaetano Doyle 2024-07-22

Hi there! I noticed you haven't purchased an Impla yet, but I've looked at both new and used models and wanted to share my thoughts. There are a few things I've noticed that could be improved, such as the unpainted gas cover, trunk, and hood, which seems a bit silly and cheap. Also, the cream dash color might not be everyone's cup of tea. However, there are some great features too, like the excellent MPG, safety rating, and the ability to fit three car seats in the back. Plus, the limited number of options compared to other brands means you won't have to spend a fortune on upgrades. Let me know if you have any questions or if there's anything else I can help with!
