chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet Impala (/ɪmˈpælə, -ˈpɑːlə/) is a full-size car that was built by Chevrolet for model years 1958 to 1985, 1994 to 1996, and 2000 to 2020. The Impala was Chevrolet's popular flagship passenger car and was among the better-selling American-made automobiles in the United States.

For its debut in 1958, the Impala was distinguished from other models by its symmetrical triple taillights. The Chevrolet Caprice was introduced as a top-line Impala Sport Sedan for model year 1965, later becoming a separate series positioned above the Impala in 1966, which, in turn, remained above the Chevrolet Bel Air and the Chevrolet Biscayne. The Impala continued as Chevrolet's most popular full-sized model through the mid-1980s. Between 1994 and 1996, the Impala was revised as a 5.7-liter V8–powered version of the Chevrolet Caprice Classic sedan.

In 2000, the Impala was reintroduced again as a mainstream front-wheel drive car. In February 2014, the 2014 Impala ranked No. 1 among Affordable Large Cars in U.S. News & World Report's rankings. When the 10th generation of the Impala was introduced for the 2014 model year, the 9th generation was rebadged as the Impala Limited and sold only to fleet customers through 2016. During that time, both versions were sold in the United States and Canada. The 10th-generation Impala was also sold in the Middle East and South Korea.

TIRES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-06
  • VIN: 2G1WB58K881
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: Starfire Solarus AS All-Season 225/60R16 98H- Car started shaking violently while I was driving it- seemed to be coming from rear tire. Limped it home, removed driver side rear tire, and noticed substantial bulge where tread was separating. Replaced tire with another brand. Several months later, same thing happened, and removed the remaining Starfire Solarus AS All-Season 225/60R16 98H tire, the passenger side rear tire, and noticed same defect. I bought both tires Mar 15, 2021 on Amazon, but have driven car very little. Unfortunately the shop that installed them didn't note mileage on receipt but the tread looks brand new (other than the defect). Looked at amazon and noticed other customers reporting the same defect! [XXX] I think these tires are very dangerous and are going to cause somebody to get injured or worse, especially since both tires are affected by defects and other consumers are reporting the exact same issue on amazon reviews. That's an issue for a few reasons. If you have to pull out for somewhere that traffic doesn't stop or yield, and the car is barley rolling trying to catch gear, there's the risk of getting hit. When the gear catches, and the jerk happened it's not a small jerk, i feel it's a safety hassard to small children. When my son was 4 months old it started and it jerked him pretty hard. My mother in law is the original owner and had it checked several times with no resolution.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-04-01
  • VIN: 2G1WS583181
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: THIS COOLANT CROSSOVER PIPE GASKET LEAK HAS BEEN A REPEATED AND MULTIPLE VEHICLE PROBLEM WITH THE 3.9L AND 3.5L AND GM ONLY CAME UP WITH 2 TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETINS; THE LAST ONE WAS #07-06-02-006E: COOLANT LEAKING FROM ENGINE (REPLACE COOLANT CROSSOVER PIPE GASKETS) - (MAR 5, 2012). HOWEVER, THE NEW GASKET DESIGN PRESUMABLY REPAIRED THE LEAK. HOWEVER, IT DID NOT. I HAVE SEEN THIS ISSUE DISCUSSED ON SEVERAL WEB SITES WITH ALL COMPLAINING ABOUT THE SAME UNRESOLVED ISSUE. MY 2008 IMPALA WITH THE 3.9L V-6 HAS BEEN REPAIRED FOR THIS ISSUE ON THE FOLLOWING DATES, EACH TIME I WAS ASSURED IT WAS SATISFACTORILY REPAIRED: 02/09/2019 ' DIY DUE TO DEALERSHIP COST. REPAIRED PER GM TSB/GM TECHNICAL SERVICE MANUAL. 11/30/2016 ' DEALERSHIP. 03/10/2014 ' DEALERSHIP. 01/11/2013 ' DEALERSHIP. AND NOW, IT'S LEAKING AGAIN! I CHATTED WITH CHEVROLET ONLINE ON 10 APR 2020 AND CECIL SAID THAT WARRANTY HAD REPAIRED IT ONCE, BUT THE ISSUE HAS BEEN AND STILL CONTINUES. GM WOULD NO LONGER REPAIR THE LEAK. THIS IS WHAT I WAS TOLD: CECIL AT 15:40, APR 10, 2020: UNFORTUNATELY, ONCE THE DECISION IS FINAL THAT IT CANNOT BE CHANGED ANYMORE. BUT HERE IS WHAT WE SUGGEST, YOU CAN TAKE THE VEHICLE TO A CERTIFIED GM DEALERSHIP ABOUT THIS TO HAVE IT DIAGNOSED AND IT MIGHT THE SAME SYMPTOM BUT DIFFERENT ROOT CAUSE. WE CANNOT PERFORM DIAGNOSIS OVER CHAT. CECIL AT 15:41, APR 10: AND FOR ASSISTANCE, I HIGHLY SUGGEST THAT YOU SPEAK WITH THE CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE MANAGER OR CEM AT THE DEALERSHIP. HOWEVER, THE DEALERSHIP IS THE ONE WHO TOLD ME THAT IT COULD NO LONGER BE COVERED UNDER WARRANTY! THIS ISSUE IS SOMETHING GM SHOULD HAVE LONG RESOLVED WITH A BETTER SOLUTION. THIS LEAK IS A CONTINUAL PROBLEM AND GM DOESN'T OFFER ANY BETTER REPAIR OPTIONS AND WILL NOT REPAIR THE LEAK AGAIN.

2008 Chevrolet Impala recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the 2008 Chevrolet Impala.

2014-06-23
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
  • Summary: This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2005-2009 Buick LaCrosse, 2006-2011 Buick Lucerne, 2000-2005 Cadillac DeVille, 2006-2011 Cadillac DTS, 2006-2014 Chevrolet Impala, and 2006-2007 Chevrolet Monte Carlo vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the weight on the key ring and road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine.
  • Consequence: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury. Additionally, a key knocked out of the run position will cause loss of engine power, power steering, and power braking, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will install two key rings and an insert in the key slot or a cover over the key head on all ignition keys, free of charge. The recall began on September 23, 2014. Owners may contact General Motors customer service at 1-800-521-7300 (Buick), 1-800-458-8006 (Cadillac), and 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet). GM's number for this recall is 14299.
2012-08-03
  • Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS LLC
  • Components: SUSPENSION:FRONT:CONTROL ARM:LOWER ARM
  • Summary: General Motors (GM) is recalling certain model year 2008-2012 Chevrolet Impala police vehicles because the front lower control arms may fracture. This safety recall does not include non-police Chevrolet Impala vehicles.
  • Consequence: A broken control arm can result in the loss of control of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace both front lower control arms, free of charge. The safety recall began on August 21, 2012. Owners may contact the Chevrolet owner center at 1-866-694-6546.

Negative 2008 Chevrolet Impala car reviews

  1. Jaeden Gerhold 2024-11-18

Hi there! I've actually owned this vehicle for 20 months and 30000 miles and I'm happy to report that I haven't had to replace the tires yet. I absolutely love the performance of this car! Before owning the Impala, I had a Malibu, but I have to say that the Impala feels much more stable, especially when I need to accelerate quickly or brake suddenly. However, I have noticed that the cabin can be a bit noisy at times with the engine whine and outside wind. Overall, I'm really enjoying my experience with this car!

  2. Vern Mitchell 2024-10-24

The vehicle looks great and is very comfortable with plenty of storage space. However, I have had some issues with it, including spending over $5,000 on repairs, including transmission work, before the car had 60 thousand miles on it. Unfortunately, I am disappointed with my experience with this vehicle, having spent over $23,000 on a used car with only 17,000 miles on it. I am hesitant to purchase another GM vehicle, as I have had issues with two other GM vehicles in the past.

  3. Keegan Hill 2024-07-15

I decided to test drive the car at the dealer and found a great deal. Plus, I needed a loan to rebuild my credit. One thing I really like about the car is the remote start, which is perfect for the winter. It also has a fast and smooth ride, making it great for long trips. However, the seats could be more comfortable. The gas mileage in the city is poor, I'm guessing around 17mpg. I just drove 125 miles and the tank is already half empty, but that's because it has a big engine and a large trunk. I haven't had a chance to take it on the highway yet. My Saab with turbo gets 200 miles to half a tank in the city or on the highway. Anyways, I really appreciate a car with lots of interior room and the trunk is large enough for luggage or groceries. Some people like it for the subwoofers, but the radio isn't the best. I think it has Pioneer speakers, but I can't find that information anywhere. Moving on, you can't customize almost anything like billet grills, headlights, tail lights, instrument cluster, or rims. Overall, I highly recommend this car to anyone.

  4. Morgan Medhurst 2024-05-10

I bought my 2008 Chevy Impala brand new in July 2008. Although it was a bit expensive compared to my Chevy Pickup, I needed to switch to a more fuel-efficient vehicle due to high gas prices. I was pleasantly surprised by how fuel-efficient this Full Size vehicle is. However, the cab is quite small for a full-size car. Unfortunately, I have two major complaints. Firstly, the suspension from the factory is not up to par and GM is aware of this issue, but they refuse to replace or repair it. I had to spend $1200.00 to fix a manufacturer defect after going through 3 sets of tires in under 40,000 miles, which was very frustrating. Secondly, the A/C-Heater System is also problematic, and once again, GM is aware of the issue but they refuse to repair or replace it. Despite these issues, I still appreciate the fuel efficiency of the car. However, I am hesitant to purchase another GM vehicle in the future.

  5. Domenic Trantow 2024-03-15

My car was actually my first new one in over 30 years, which was a big change for me since I usually buy used. However, I have to admit that this car has some pretty bad blind spots, even worse than my pickup truck with a bed cap on it. Unfortunately, I've had to replace all four rotors once and had some rust work done on the front doors and right rear fender (thankfully under warranty). Now, my AC compressor is broken in the middle of January, which is definitely not ideal. On top of that, my stereo has never worked properly and only plays music through the rear speakers 99% of the time. I'm considering trading it in while it still has the most trade-in value and trying out a foreign car or another Ford product.

Positive 2008 Chevrolet Impala car reviews

  1. Shawn Littel 2024-11-06

I bought my 2008 Impala over a year ago and I'm pretty happy with it. However, I did notice a few things that could be improved. For example, the heater doesn't throw heat continuously when the car is in park, which could be a bad situation if you ever get stranded on the side of the road in the middle of winter. Additionally, I noticed that the car has a blind spot in between the area where the windshield and the driver's side door meet, which can be a bit tricky to navigate. Lastly, the lighting inside the car could be improved. Overall, though, I'm still satisfied with my purchase.

  2. Christ Carter 2024-10-15

In the beginning, I absolutely loved my car! The remote start and leather heated seats were amazing. However, I have had to replace the head gasket, water pump, and two sensors. Currently, my car is using 1 1/2 qt of oil every 2000 miles and GM says that is normal. Unfortunately, this is not acceptable to me and I think it's time to move on.

  3. Ignacio McKenzie 2024-10-12

You bought a car with only one owner and 56K miles on it. It rides and drives great, and the power of the 3500 V6 engine is well matched to the car. The MPG is great in town, in the 20s, and on the highway, it gets 29 and up. It runs quietly, handles well, and the tire wear has been good so far. It does well on long trips. Overall, you really like it. Your previous car had a 3800 V6 Olds engine with a little more power, but you should have used the proven 3500 V6 engine instead. Unfortunately, at 58K miles, the head gasket seems to be seeping antifreeze. You're wondering if this problem has a history. It may need a new head and gasket. Additionally, the rear electric door activator needs to be replaced already, which will cost around $300. You hope you haven't got a bad car, but you still like it a lot. You had hoped it would be the last car you needed, as you're 72 years old now and you're thinking it should run over 120K miles for you. You pray it will.

I've heard from many people that American-made automobiles are not as good as Japanese-made ones. While that may be true, my teenage daughter wanted to buy this Impala SS over Japanese or other imports because she loves Chevy. We've driven it about 7000 miles so far, and it has performed excellently, just like my Trailblazer SS. It also has great gas mileage for a V8 engine, getting over 21 mpg with mixed driving. The ride is very comfortable and smooth, although the interior may lack the refinement of some foreign cars. However, it's hard to find a car with a roaring V8 engine for under $30,000. Overall, we're very happy with our Impala SS and would recommend it to anyone looking for a powerful and affordable American-made car.

My car was a rental for its first 20k miles. After 1 year and 17k more miles, I've only had to keep the oil changed. The cylinder deactivation gives highway economy of 27mpg with the cruise set on 70. It drops to about 17 in town. A friend with a Bentley Arnage commented on how nice the interior is! All that and outstanding acceleration to boot. The look of despair and surprise on a Honda 'tuner' face in the rearview when the light turns green is priceless :) This car is definitely a keeper!
