Volvo problems
Volvo Cars (Swedish: Volvo personvagnar, styled VOLVO in the company's logo) is a Swedish multinational manufacturer of luxury vehicles. Volvo is headquartered in Torslanda, Gothenburg. The company manufactures SUVs, station wagons, and sedans. The company's main marketing revolves around safety and its Swedish heritage and design.
Volvo Cars has been separate from its former parent conglomerate and producer of heavy trucks, buses, and construction equipment (among others) AB Volvo since 1999 when AB Volvo sold its automobile division Volvo Cars to Ford Motor Company for US$6.47 billion. On 28 March 2010, Ford sold Volvo Cars at a loss to Geely for $1.8 billion; the deal closed in August 2010. Volvo Cars was publicly listed on the Nasdaq Stockholm stock exchange in 2021, though Geely still retains majority ownership. Volvo Cars and AB Volvo share the Volvo logo, and cooperate in running the Volvo Museum.
In March 2021, Volvo Cars announced that it would be a fully electric brand by 2030. In June 2021, Volvo Cars and Swedish battery developer and manufacturer Northvolt announced the intention to establish a 50/50 joint venture consisting of a battery gigafactory and R&D (research and development) center. In December 2021, it was revealed the battery R&D center would be located in Gothenburg. In February 2022, Gothenburg was also chosen as the location for the battery gigafactory. During 2021 and 2022, Volvo Cars transferred its hybrid engine research and production capabilities in Skövde and Zhangjiakou to Aurobay, in a joint venture with Geely.
Volvo Cars owns 48.3% of Polestar and 30% of Lynk & Co, in addition to 50% of NOVO Energy (electric vehicle batteries), 100% of Zenseact (AD and ADAS software), and 60% of HaleyTek (Android-based infotainment systems). As of 2022, Volvo Cars has production plants in Torslanda in Sweden, Ridgeville, South Carolina in the United States, Ghent in Belgium, and Daqing in China.

Common Volvo problems
Volvo cars are popular for their safety features and luxury accommodations, but like any vehicle, they have their common problems. This article will discuss the most prevalent issues with Volvo vehicles, focusing on transmission problems, excessive oil consumption, cooling fan issues, and electrical problems.
Transmission problems are a common issue across many Volvo models, particularly the XC90 and V70. Erratic shifting and transmission failure are the most common complaints, which can lead to dangerous driving conditions and expensive repairs.
Excessive oil consumption is another prevalent problem, particularly with the Volvo S60. Several reports claim that the vehicle runs out of oil before the next oil change, indicating a damaged head gasket or dirty oil filters. This issue can result in a damaged engine, which is expensive to replace.
Cooling fan issues are also common in Volvo vehicles, primarily affecting the XC60. The cooling fan ensures the engine runs at optimal temperatures, and a malfunctioning fan can lead to overheating and catastrophic results. Numerous causes, such as a dirty air filter, clutch assembly failure, faulty temperature sensor, and electrical issues, can result in a malfunctioning cooling fan.
Electrical problems are widespread in Volvo vehicles, with dashboard lights illuminating even when there are no apparent problems. Many of these lights are reportedly false positives, which can be irritating for drivers. Luxury vehicles often house several cutting-edge technological components, from audio speakers and lighting to sensors, and Volvo models experience their fair share of electrical problems.
In conclusion, while Volvo cars are known for their safety and luxury features, they have their common problems. Transmission issues, excessive oil consumption, cooling fan problems, and electrical issues are the most prevalent concerns. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent these issues and save money in the long run.

- Summary: In November of 2021, I purchased my dream car, a 2016 Volvo s60 Cross Country, proud to own a vehicle from a company known for their safe and reliable vehicles. In April of 2022, a class action case ([XXX], et al., v. Volvo Car USA, LLC, Volvo Cars of North America, LLC, and Volvo Personvagnar AB) was issued against Volvo due to a KNOWN-TO-VOLVO DESIGN FLAW in their engines which could lead to engine failure. The case was settled out of court in early 2023 and Volvo issued an extended warranty for vehicles owners to take preventative measures against potential engine failure. Although my car is listed under the extended warranty, I was never sent any notice of it from Volvo. On [XXX], while driving on a highway, at speed limit, my 2016 Volvo s60 Cross Country's engine failed. I learned about the Extended Warranty from a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Quality Bulletin (Extended Warranty P10183: I5T Oil Consumption Replace; Model Year 20132016 S60, 2015-2016 V60, V60CC and XC60, 2016 XC70, S60CC and S60L) while researching the issue with my car online. I contacted Volvo Customer Care to ask why I was not sent notice and what they could do. I was told that to open a case with Volvo I would need a diagnostic from a dealership. On August 5, 2024, I took my car in for a diagnostic at Patrick Volvo Cars in Schaumburg, IL, from who I also purchased the car in 2021. August 6, 2024 I received a partial diagnostic and was told that they would require 10x the original diagnostic price to find the root of the issue in the engine. On the same day, I called Volvo customer care and opened a case. After weeks of little to no communication, on September 3 Volvo denied my case. I was not provided any opportunity to communicate over the phone with my case manager at Volvo - only after she sent me the decision did I receive a call from her to learn Volvo does not care about my side of the story. - Summary: Volvo mechanics claim the engine seized due to alternator pulley failure, however, at the time of the event, the engine showed no oil on the dipstick despite having added multiple quarts of oil over the last three months. Volvo has issued an extended warranty letter to customers due to excessive oil consumption, but Volvo failed to provide this letter for this vehicle. I’ve checked Volvo databases for engines matching this extended warranty and confirmed the engine is in fact covered under this extended warranty. Due to Volvo’s failure to communicate this problem, my daughter continued to drive this vehicle until it completely lost power in high speed traffic on I-95 nearly causing an accident and stranding her on the side of the interstate for several hours. Upon arriving at the cite of this incident, I notice there was no low oil warning light illuminated on the dash, so I double checked oil dipstick and added at least two quarts of oil. Unfortunately the engine had already seized at this point and the vehicle was inoperable.

- Summary: Yesterday I took my one year old granddaughter to North Carolina, which is an hour and a half drive away. We had breakfast with family members and I loaded her into the back seat. When I closed the door it looked as if the door closed, but as I began to drive, the door swung open. I attempted to close the door again, and the latch would not connect to the hook inside of the driver side rear door. I ended up needing to have my son sit in the back seat and hold the door closed the entire ride home (an hour and a half) to make sure that the door would not open again. I am currently driving my "new" car with a ratchet strap going from door to door to hold the door closed so that I can go to work. I found information stating that there was a recall on the Volvo S60 (2017) but when I enter my VIN nothing displays. I just bought the vehicle in February and the dealership is telling me that this will cost me $450 to repair on my MAX CARE warranty. Why? When the vehicle had a recall on it in 2020 that obviously was never addressed, prior to me purchasing it.

- Summary: When I purchased my 2014 Volvo XC 60 I was told that it was in good overall condition and believe that after driving it for the vehicle in full and brought it back because it needed a current inspection. Within four days of taking it home after the inspection, the PCV valve went bad and I had a minor leak in the middle center top of the windshield that dripped in and left watermarks on my headliner. So again I called the dealer and explained to them what was going on. I took it back they corrected the PCV valve and said that they had my windshield Repaired and sealed by a professional windshield installer. Once again, I picked up my new car and I went home with it. The first rainstorm we got the inside of my car was flooded to the point where it shorted out my sunroof switch so now I can use my sunroof and there is mildew smell all through my car , floorboard on the driver side side gets soaked along with everything else from about the center all the way to the left and down the side of the windshield I feel that more than half of that windshield is not secured properly in there and sealed and could lead to serious injury to myself or possibly Someone else. I have reached out to them several times And after I picked it up when they stated everything was fixed and good to go, it was nothing but a nightmare my Car has a massive leaking windshield around more than 50% of it at least. I contacted the auto dealer once again and explained what was going on and how severe the situation had become. The service manager assured me that they work on the windshield was guaranteed and under warranty and he had a switch on hand to Replace my control switch for my sunroof and that he would contact their windshield guy and get him back there to make it right at no cost to me. In addition he said he would also supply me the loaner so I would not be without a car until mine was definitely fixed and ready, that was the last I heard from them and that was almost 3 weeks ago

- Summary: 225/55R 95H On the highway in center lane going 70mph. Car was starting to shake and then heard loud noise coming from the back. Next thing the tire blew. Tread ripped off the bumper, side rear panel, taillight and trim under the door. We were lucky to be able to pull over to the shoulder. We had to get a flat bed tow back home. Took the tire to the Goodyear place where we had purchased the tires. There was 12000 mile on the tires. We purchased a new tire. Driving home there was the same shake. Went back to the tire place and they put the passenger rear tire on the front passenger side to see if it was truly the tire. Yes it was, so we purchased 3 new Goodyear tires, the same ones that was replaced from flat. The Goodyer guy told us to send the tire to Goodyear, because it felt it was defected. Maybe they would pay the over $5000.00 to repair our car. He told me that they have had a lot of problems with that tire. Goodyear sent a certified letter to us stating " Tire condition occured as a result of substantial impact causing overdeflection of the tire and fracture of sidewall rubber and/or fabric plies and/or liner material". They will not pay. If we had hit something substantial we would not be here today. There were not warning light or messages prior to the blowout.

- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: The component or system that failed is the driver side door controls for all four windows and both side mirrors. My safety is at risk as I am unable to adjust my mirrors manually or electronically in order to see. I am also unable to roll down any of the windows in the vehicle from the driver door in the event of an emergency. Yes, the problem has been confirmed by the Volvo service center. According to my local Volvo service center, this is a common problem in Volvos and they are very familiar with the repair needed to correct. The problem is that the driver door wiring is zip-tied together and over time, as the driver door opens and closes, the zip tie chafes the insulation off of the wiring causing the copper part of the wires to be exposed and twisted together. There are no warning lights reporting this issue, only that the window and mirror controls stop working. The following video link between 9:38-12:16 explains this issue in Volvos. I am writing to advocate for a vehicle recall. I believe this is a manufacturing flaw which could have been avoided by simply using electrical tape and not a zip tie. The repair has been quoted at $800. Driver side door entry is an essential function and should not be a cause for an electrical fire or drivers’ and passengers’ safety.
