Jeep Wrangler problems

The Jeep Wrangler is a series of compact and mid-size four-wheel drive off-road SUVs manufactured by Jeep since 1986, and currently in its fourth generation. The Wrangler JL, the most recent generation, was unveiled in late 2017 and is produced at Jeep's Toledo Complex.
The Wrangler is a direct progression from the World War II Jeep, through the CJ (Civilian Jeeps) produced by Willys, Kaiser-Jeep, and American Motors Corporation (AMC) from the mid-1940s through the 1980s. Although neither AMC nor Chrysler (after it purchased AMC in 1987) have claimed that the Wrangler was a direct descendant of the original military model — both the CJ Jeeps and the conceptually consistent Wrangler, with their solid axles and open top, have been called the Jeep model as central to Jeep's brand identity as the rear-engine 911 is to Porsche.
Similar to the Willys MB and the CJ Jeeps before it, all Wrangler models continue to use a separate body and frame, rigid live axles both front and rear, a tapering nose design with flared fenders, a fold-flat windshield and can be driven without doors. Also, with few exceptions, they have part-time four-wheel drive systems, with the choice of high and low gearing, and standard open bodies with removable hard or soft tops. However, the Wrangler series was specifically redesigned to be safer and more comfortable on-road, to attract more daily drivers, by upgrading its suspension, drivetrain, and interior, compared to the CJ line. The suspension on all Wranglers included trackbars and anti-roll bars, and, from the 1997 TJ onwards, front and rear coil springs instead of the previous leaf springs.
From 2004 on, the Wrangler has been complemented with long-wheelbase versions, called Wrangler Unlimited. 2004-2006 models were longer versions with 2 doors. In 2004 only automatic transmission-equipped “Unlimited” versions were sold. In 2005 both an automatic and manual 6-speed (NSG-370) were offered. Since 2007, the long-wheelbase Wranglers were four-door models, offering over 20 in (508 mm) more room. By mid-2017 the four-door models represented three-quarters of all new Wranglers on the market.

Common Jeep Wrangler problems
The Jeep Wrangler is a popular off-roading vehicle, but it has faced various problems over its four generations. Some of the most common issues include engine popping, automatic transmission problems, the notorious death wobble, and Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM) failure.
- Automatic Transmission Issues: Since the 2005 Jeep Wrangler, several owners have reported problems with the automatic transmission, including the vehicle getting stuck in one gear.
- The Death Wobble: The third generation of the Jeep Wrangler (2007-2018) is the least reliable, with many owners experiencing the notorious death wobble.
- Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM) Failure: The TIPM is responsible for controlling low voltage electronics, such as headlights, starter motor, fuel pump, and throttle control. Fiat Chrysler vehicles between 2007 and 2015 are famous for issues with the TIPM, causing problems like power windows cranking but no engine starts, stalling while moving, and airbags deploying at random.
These are just a few of the common problems reported by Jeep Wrangler owners. It's essential to research and consider these issues when purchasing a new or used Jeep Wrangler. Regular maintenance can help prevent or minimize these problems, ensuring a safer and more enjoyable driving experience.

- Summary: The manufacturer has not been able to remedy the batteries for electrical propulsion, saying "no remedy available ". Makes me hesitant to drive or park near other vehicles or structures. I have also complained to the dealership, where I purchased my Jeep, about a wobble/shake in the front-end when driving over bumps. After two attempts they have not been able to find a reason for or repair my vehicle. When driving in rain, this condition makes control a dangerous issue in heavy traffic. The most recent occurance was on [XXX] where the posted speed limit is 80mp, accompanied by heavy 18 wheeler traffic! I have also experienced the wobble/shake when traveling [XXX] from Texas to Louisiana, in the rain, surrounded by heavy automobile & 18 wheel traffic once again. This is a very stressful and uncomfortable situation to be in. I have experienced the wobble/shake soon after the purchase of my Jeep, still exists after several mechanical inspections at the dealership where purchased. I have also written a letter to the manufacturer, dated August 22, 2024, for these issues & the devaluation that exists with this particular model, to date I have not received a response! There is no excuse for the inability to repair or respond to my concerns! I have a copy of my letter to Customer Care for Stellantis & recall & repair documents; I am unable to upload at this time. Starting in July of 2024, it started doing things independently, such as changing channels, the source, and switching between navigation and backup camera; on Oct 4, 3024, it started turning on Bluetooth and calling 911. I can not turn it on because it continues to call 911. The vehicle only has 20,900 miles. The local dealership and Jeep are aware of the problem and have offered to repair it at a cost to me. This is a manufacture defect that needs to be fixed/recalled by Jeep.

- Summary: I am writing to file a complaint regarding the recent safety recall (NHTSA Recall Numbers: 24V-720 and 24E-080) affecting my Chrysler vehicle. The recall pertains to a potential fire risk associated with the high-voltage battery pack. While I appreciate Chrysler’s efforts to address this safety concern, I have serious reservations about the effectiveness of the proposed remedy. 1.Safety Concerns: I am worried about the safety of my vehicle’s battery. The recall notice indicated that a battery pack may contain cells with separator damage that could lead to a vehicle fire. I find it concerning that the proposed remedy primarily involves a software update and inspection, rather than an immediate battery replacement, especially given the potential risks involved. 2.Request for Action: I urge the NHTSA to investigate this matter further and consider whether the proposed remedy adequately addresses the safety risks posed by the high-voltage battery. I believe that consumers deserve clear information and effective solutions when it comes to potential safety defects in their vehicles. Thank you for your attention to this matter. I look forward to your prompt response regarding the steps being taken to address this safety concern.

- Summary: I am writing to express my serious concern regarding the unresolved safety recall 95B affecting my Jeep Wrangler. As a parent, my children’s safety is my utmost priority, and knowing that the battery—a component at risk due to this recall—is positioned directly under their seats has made me extremely uneasy. I no longer feel confident or safe driving this vehicle with them inside. Despite the recall, I have been informed there is currently no remedy available. This lack of a solution leaves me without a secure vehicle and heightens my concerns over the risks associated with continuing to drive it. Additionally, my request for a buyback has been denied, which is disheartening given the absence of an available remedy and the potential safety hazards involved. I am seeking immediate assistance and a resolution that prioritizes the safety of my family.

- Summary: My 20214XE Hybrid from the day I bought it was often saying "electric not available" There was a potential fire recall last winter that took four months to remedy, during that time we were told not to charge it, park in our garage, park near our home/structures or park by other cars. I purchase a hybrid that I'm not able to use as a hybrid. Finally, got the repair in the spring. Literally, two months later, it starts doing all kinds of dangerous things. I would come to a stop or be in the middle of a turn and would have no power whatsoever, gas pedal to the floor and going nowhere and then would lunge forward. Took to the dealer, computer said CRITICAL hybrid battery overheating, the original repair clearly didn't work. Eventually, it was approved for hybrid battery being replaced. All was well until 2 weeks ago when it got "jeep death wobble", violently shaking back and forth at about 60mph. They did repair it but informed us that there is ANOTHER RISK FOR FIRE RECALL, do not charge it or park in garage, etc. etc. I have a vehicle that is a risk for BURNING MY HOUSE DOWN, this is multiple times and unacceptable. I also purchased a hybrid that I am not able to use as a hybrid.

- Summary: Driving on an Interstate Highway in Florida, hit a small "rut" in the roadway at Highway speeds and the front end started shaking "VIOLENTLY" to the point I though the vehicle was going to "Roll Over". I had to slow down, switch from the center lane of a three lane highway crossing over the outside lane then onto the shoulder of the Highway, get the speed down from 70 to 50 mph before the "Violent Shaking" stopped. When speaking with a service center for Jeep I was told this is a "KNOWN ISSUE" with the 2021 Jeep Wrangler but there is no recall for the vehicle year 2021 BUT there were for other vehicle years, which I find UNBELEIVABLE!!!! As a retired Police Officer I will tell you this is a VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION THAT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED IMMEDIATELY OR SOMEONE WILL GET KILLED IN A CRASH!!!

Fortunately, there were no vehicles immediately behind me taking the impact of flying car parts, however, had there been this could have been deadly. This vehicle is a blast to drive! I ordered mine exactly how I wanted it and it has been incredibly reliable. While the gas mileage isn't the best at 16-20 mpg, it's worth it for the limitless driving experience. Everyone who sees it loves it and owning it has been an absolute joy. It can be a bit noisy on the highway and the ride is only marginal with good shocks, but the overall experience of driving and owning it is truly special. This model is the perfect balance in the Wrangler line - no leaf springs and still small enough to be an outstanding 4-wheeler, with the iconic look that Wranglers are known for. It's just perfect!

If you've never driven a Wrangler before, I would highly recommend renting one for a few days. It's a unique driving experience that sets it apart from modern CUVs, which is why I love it! I used to own a '95 Wrangler that I adored, but unfortunately it was totaled and I couldn't afford a new one. However, the 2016 Wrangler Unlimited Sahara that I purchased in May 2016 is a significant improvement. The ride is much smoother, the power and acceleration are greatly improved, and the MPG is impressive considering its weight and brick-like aerodynamics. When purchasing a new Jeep, I would suggest opting for the Freedom Top. It provides a quieter ride, improved security, and you can still remove the top in about 10 minutes. I purchased an electric winch to lift off the rear portion of the top for the garage, making it a one-man job and reducing the risk of damaging the top.

We recently bought a 2011 Jeep Wrangler Sahara and we are absolutely thrilled with our decision. While some Jeep enthusiasts may not be used to features like heated seats, navigation system with HDD audio, climate control, and power windows, we find them to be a great way to enjoy the comfort and convenience of a luxury vehicle during our weekly commute, while still having a capable off-road vehicle for weekend adventures. Our whole family has been smiling non-stop since we made the purchase!

I had my first new vehicle in 1979, a CJ-7, which I had to let go of when I started a family. However, I always promised myself that I would have another one. With the kids gone and the 30th anniversary of my first Jeep approaching, I thought it was the perfect time to get one. This new one is much more comfortable and has a better ride, but it's still a Jeep when the pavement ends! I got it for $6K off sticker price and have been having a great time buying aftermarket add-ons for it. Whether on or off-road, this vehicle is just plain fun to drive. Although it's not my primary vehicle, I consider it a safe alternative to riding a motorcycle. If you've always wanted one, go for it! However, if you're more concerned about mpg and cargo space than fun, it might not be for you. I have no regrets!

I've been a fan of Jeeps for years and had a CJ7 until it rusted away. I purchased this Wrangler second-hand in 2002 with only 27K miles and have enjoyed every moment with it. It's not the smoothest ride, lacks refinement in almost every aspect, and can be a bit unstable above 70 mph, but it's a Jeep and perfect for off-roading. On a sunny day with the top down and doors off, there's nothing quite like it. It's been fairly dependable, but I do take it off-road, so it does get a workout. Some repairs have been necessary, but it's not a money pit.

I strongly advise against purchasing a Jeep from Fiat/Chrysler/Ram. My personal experience with the vehicle has been extremely problematic, and the dealership has not been helpful in resolving these issues. Despite multiple attempts to fix the car, the check engine light continues to come on. I believe that taking legal action may be necessary. It is my opinion that potential buyers should avoid this brand altogether. Thank you for considering my advice.

I have experienced several issues with my new vehicle since the day I picked it up, despite taking meticulous care of it and having previous experience with similar models. These issues include play in the drag link, noisy lifters, brakes losing vacuum, pulley bearing noise, pinging even on high octane gasoline, missing speaker clips, extra bolts found on the floor, and numerous squeaks and rattles. Additionally, there are paint inconsistencies and loose chrome bezels on the dashboard. As a taxpayer who supported this car company during its financial struggles, I am disappointed in the poor quality of their products and the above-MSRP prices charged by dealers. However, I am confident in my ability to address these issues and ensure that my vehicle performs at its best.

I bought our '94 Wrangler with a 4.0L automatic and 46,000 miles on it in 2000 for my son. Since then, it has only accumulated 91,000 miles by 2005. Over the course of 4 years, we have only had to replace the radiator and the canvas top in 2004. We did encounter some vacuum problems with the heater, but it was a quick and inexpensive fix at less than $25. The body has only developed a small rust hole on the front fender. We plan to upgrade the suspension in 2005. Overall, it has been an excellent SUV for the money.

Hey there! I wanted to share my experience with my brand new Jeep Wrangler JL 2-door hard top in ocean blue metallic color. It's a stock vehicle, built in April 2019, and I've already put 250 miles on it. As a Wrangler enthusiast since 2002, I can say that the JL model is a more refined vehicle with a better ride and numerous improvements compared to its predecessor, the JK model. Although it's a bit overpriced, you won't find many competitors that have the appearance and off-road capabilities of the Wrangler. However, I did notice one issue that takes away from the overall experience of owning and driving it. The steering system in the JL Wrangler feels vague and wandering, which is different from my previous Jeeps or any other vehicle I have owned. On the interstate, it can be a bit frightening and requires two-handed control to keep it from wandering into adjacent lanes. I did some research and found that this is a common issue with the 2018 and 2019 Wrangler JL's. Despite this, I still recommend the 2019 Wrangler JL to anyone interested in owning one of these unique vehicles. Thanks for reading! The NHTSA has received over 500 complaints specifically addressing the steering issue in the JL's. Internet forums that specialize in Jeep Wranglers are filled with complaints and lengthy discussions about the steering characteristics in the new Wrangler. However, there are some owners who have not experienced the flaw or have adapted to it, according to what I read online. Even media-based reviewers have given this phenomenon scant notice. Of course, the manufacturer is somewhat quiet about this issue and may not make it right until someone is killed or reviews such as this have a slowing effect on sales. My advice to anyone considering purchasing a new Wrangler JL in any of its configurations would be to carefully test drive the exact one you may buy, both on a narrow two-lane road and on a highway where you can attain speeds over 55 mph. If your prospective new vehicle steers normally for you, go for it. However, if it feels strange, seems to want to wander, or feels like you’re driving in a windstorm, you may want to reconsider, because it may take a long time before FCA acknowledges the problem and fixes it. Update: After putting over 2000 miles on the JL which I reviewed several months ago (see above), I am updating my review. This may only apply to my vehicle and is not intended to negate the thousands of other JL owners' steering complaints. My new 2019 Wrangler JL Sport, when brand new, had terrible steering as I described above; however, that situation has greatly improved without any intervention on my part. Now the Jeep's steering is almost what I would call normal, not quite as good as my 2016 Trailhawk, but so much improved that I now drive the vehicle without finding it necessary to concentrate on keeping the vehicle on track. The Jeep is now actually fun to drive, as any Wrangler owner would hope to be the case.I want to share my experience with the steering system on my Jeep. I want to clarify that I didn't get used to the bad steering or change my driving habits to accommodate it. Instead, the steering system underwent a mechanical change due to use. Unlike what others have noted, the steering on my Jeep was never loose with play. It was always responsive and stayed on track when I released the steering wheel. However, it had a problem where it wouldn't return to center track when the wheel was nudged and then released, as if there was no caster in the alignment. This required constant counter-correction for each correction made on the highway. It's likely that the joints in the steering system, being new and tight, were not allowing the inadequate caster and toe-in specs to overcome this tightness, thus requiring constant driving adjustments. Now, with some limbering up, it almost steers normally. I hope others have experienced the same improvement.
