2018 Jeep Wrangler problems

The Jeep Wrangler is a series of compact and mid-size four-wheel drive off-road SUVs manufactured by Jeep since 1986, and currently in its fourth generation. The Wrangler JL, the most recent generation, was unveiled in late 2017 and is produced at Jeep's Toledo Complex.

The Wrangler is a direct progression from the World War II Jeep, through the CJ (Civilian Jeeps) produced by Willys, Kaiser-Jeep, and American Motors Corporation (AMC) from the mid-1940s through the 1980s. Although neither AMC nor Chrysler (after it purchased AMC in 1987) have claimed that the Wrangler was a direct descendant of the original military model — both the CJ Jeeps and the conceptually consistent Wrangler, with their solid axles and open top, have been called the Jeep model as central to Jeep's brand identity as the rear-engine 911 is to Porsche.

Similar to the Willys MB and the CJ Jeeps before it, all Wrangler models continue to use a separate body and frame, rigid live axles both front and rear, a tapering nose design with flared fenders, a fold-flat windshield and can be driven without doors. Also, with few exceptions, they have part-time four-wheel drive systems, with the choice of high and low gearing, and standard open bodies with removable hard or soft tops. However, the Wrangler series was specifically redesigned to be safer and more comfortable on-road, to attract more daily drivers, by upgrading its suspension, drivetrain, and interior, compared to the CJ line. The suspension on all Wranglers included trackbars and anti-roll bars, and, from the 1997 TJ onwards, front and rear coil springs instead of the previous leaf springs.

From 2004 on, the Wrangler has been complemented with long-wheelbase versions, called Wrangler Unlimited. 2004-2006 models were longer versions with 2 doors. In 2004 only automatic transmission-equipped “Unlimited” versions were sold. In 2005 both an automatic and manual 6-speed (NSG-370) were offered. Since 2007, the long-wheelbase Wranglers were four-door models, offering over 20 in (508 mm) more room. By mid-2017 the four-door models represented three-quarters of all new Wranglers on the market.

Common 2018 Jeep Wrangler problems

The 2018 Jeep Wrangler has several common problems that have been reported by owners. These issues include failures to start, water leaking into the cabin, and suspension issues.

Failures to start are the most widespread complaint from 2018 Jeep Wrangler owners, with many experiencing this issue around 20,000 miles. The most common reason for this problem is an electrical issue, such as a dead battery or a worn-out alternator. Low voltage can also be a sign of a damaged EGR valve, which costs around $450 to replace.

Water leaking into the cabin is another common problem, affecting some models within the first 10,000 miles. This issue is often caused by loose panels on the Jeep Wrangler, which are designed to be removed for off-roading purposes. If these panels are not installed correctly, water may leak into the cabin. Fixing this issue at a dealership typically costs under $100, as they may replace some seals if they were damaged during installation.

Suspension issues, commonly referred to as the "death wobble," are relatively rare but still show up on some 2018 Wrangler models around 30,000 miles. This problem is caused by front steering and suspension components becoming loose after hard off-roading adventures, leading to wobbling. Checking the parts and tightening them up costs around $250, while replacing any damaged parts can cost between $500 and $1,800, depending on the source.

The 2018 Jeep Wrangler has also had 11 recalls, which is worse than other midsize SUVs from the same year. The most serious recall covers the steering shaft, which can split, leading to a loss of control. Jeep will replace the parts on affected models. Many other recalls cover seat belts and latches, which are much easier to change out.

Despite these issues, the 2018 Jeep Wrangler is known for its excellent off-road capabilities and up-to-date technology. However, it has received some criticism for its low fuel economy and small cargo area. Overall, the 2018 Jeep Wrangler is considered a good used SUV, with an overall rating of 7/10. It has improved reliability compared to older models, but it is not as reliable as some other SUVs in the same price range.

  • Summary: The navigation/radio screen has delamination. At first, I thought it was just cosmetic. Starting in July of 2024, it started doing things independently, such as changing channels, the source, and switching between navigation and backup camera; on Oct 4, 3024, it started turning on Bluetooth and calling 911. I can not turn it on because it continues to call 911. The vehicle only has 20,900 miles. The local dealership and Jeep are aware of the problem and have offered to repair it at a cost to me. This is a manufacture defect that needs to be fixed/recalled by Jeep.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-10
  • VIN: 1C4HJXCN6JW
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: Several times I have experienced intermittent operation of the rear view camera system and rear brake light operation on my vehicle while reversing. The issue has occured about 10 times in the last year or so. The issue seems to be the same as symptoms as FCA US recall 77B, but my VIN number apparently does not fall under that recall despite being the same model, which I think is a mistake.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-09-20
  • VIN: 1C4HJXDG2JW
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: Within 1 year of getting our Wrangler we experienced issues with the instrument panel short circuit and also the rear camera stopped functioning. I brought it to the dealership and they said it would require hours to repair them and it wasn't covered under warrantee. I've now seen 2 recalls regarding these issues, Short Circuit: [XXX] : [XXX] While I intend to inquire about these and the latter recall is fairly new, i haven't received notice of either. Additionally, in 2022, far within my warranty, the aux battery that restarts the car for the stop/start function, failed to maintain a charge. The car shut off in the middle of an exit ramp on the highway. It was particularly concerning because the engine was stalling anytime I stepped on the brakes. I brought it in for service and Jeep charged me for the entire replacement of the aux battery since it wasn't under warranty. I'm not sure if this is a recurring issue but I wanted to bring it to your attention also. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-02
  • VIN: 1C4HJXFN2JW
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: The instrument panel cluster LED screen occasionally freezes and does not accurately reflect the gear the vehicle is in, speed, etc. Recently the screen froze and continued to display P (indicating vehicle in park) even while the vehicle was shifted to Reverse and Drive. This presents a serious safety risk as the gauge cluster indicates the vehicle is in park when it is in fact in gear. Also, as the display remains on even when the vehicle is turned off the battery may run dead leaving the driver stranded. Our local dealer was unable to get the vehicle to reproduce the issue while in their shop. They advised they were not able to identify an issue. However, we have experienced this issue on 3 separate occasions. This issue was not preceded by any warning lights or audible signals. The issue first occurred at 65,540 miles in the time we have owned it. Unfortunately, I cannot say if this was an issue with the vehicle before we purchased it in July of 2024. We have video evidence of this issue, but the clips are too large to attach here. Please advise if there is somewhere we can email them.

  • VIN: 1C4BJWDG8JL
  • Components: SUSPENSION,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I had the common issue with Jeep ‘18 wranglers called the “death wobble”. I read many articles saying it’s common with jeeps from the 2018 era. One day I was driving and it stopped in the middle of the road. I couldn’t accelerate or brake. I could not fully get the vehicle off a busy highway. I took it in before this to get it diagnosed and mechanics could not figure it out. After this incident I towed it to the dealership and they replaced my drive shaft because it was completely destroyed. I am now paying $2000 in repairs.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-31
  • VIN: 1C4HJXEG1JW
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: The 3.6l v6 (mostly in the 2014-2020 wrangler) has a known issue for cylinder 4, 5 and 6 misfires, warping, metal shavings, damaged cams, ticking, overheating etc. My wrangler has had this issue multiple times and the cost to repair it is well over $4000 each time. The first time, my wrangler had 85000 miles and now it has 135,000 miles. The vehicle overheats, starts rough, idles rough, loses power, mpg tanks and its a huge safety issue (I drive my 2 year old son around a lot, as well as my dog).

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,LANE DEPARTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-01
  • VIN: 1C4HJXDG5JW
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,LANE DEPARTURE
  • Summary: The sensors, in particular the blind spot warning, randomly light up and stay on until the vehicle is turned off. Radio and navigation system randomly shuts off, and check engine light goes on and off randomly. While driving at night, my entire dash flashed a red warning that there was no oil in the vehicle. I immediately pulled over at a gas station. It was dark, I couldn’t see, and it was 2am in a town I was unfamiliar with. I added 1 quart of oil ( I couldn’t really see the dipstick). The warning light went off, and the check engine light came on. I went 30 minutes to my destination and had the car towed to the dealership the next day. They said it was an o2 sensor, and that there was TOO MUCH oil in the vehicle so they drained it and did an oil change. I picked it up, drove less than 5 miles, and the check engine light came back on. I immediately returned to the dealership. They had it for several days before telling me that I had to replace the Catalytic Converters (2 of them) because I had overfilled the oil. They deemed it my fault. Since then the sensor problems continued, and the check engine light would randomly go on and off. Now it’s at the dealership again because it was leaking oil after an oil change. The dealership, and inspector from my extended warranty are saying that it has a blown engine because there was too little oil (in spite of NO SENSOR going off warning that the oil was low). Extended warranty inspector wants me to authorize a complete engine tear down for further inspection ($7000) and the dealership says I should just replace the engine ($11,000).

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-11
  • VIN: 1C4BJWDGXJL
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I have put thousands of dollars already into the motor because my Jeep continually overheats and looses coolant. Its been in the shop countless times over the last year with the same issue. I was told it was the head gasket with is a $3k job. I took it to get a second opinion and this shop just completed the same repair on my exact vehicle. It wasn't the head gasket. He said the cylinder is cracked and it would need to be completely replaced. $10k. That it is a factor defect and that Chrysler has been aware of the issue but is currently not doing anything about issue. He said they extensively searched the cylinder head and could not see where the crack was but Chrysler's recommendation was just replace the cylinder because that is where the issue is. I cannot afford to spend $10k on a repair. The vehicle is not even that old to have this issue, it is a 2018. Chrysler told my mechanic that it was a factor defect, a malfunction in the actual part, but that a recall hasn't been issued yet.

Negative 2018 Jeep Wrangler car reviews

  1. Halle Kovacek 2024-09-04

I am trading it off despite having it for less than a year. The computer is always down.

  2. Adolph King 2024-08-22

It took three visits for my transmission leak to get corrected, but they were able to replace it in the end. Unfortunately, my Jeep has had some issues with poor quality and cheap manufacturing. Despite this, I still love my Jeep!

  3. Fred Parisian 2024-07-15

Before purchasing a Wrangler, it may be helpful to read reviews from various sources. I have personally experienced some issues with my vehicle, including multiple tire replacements, clutch replacements, windshield replacements, and transmission issues. Additionally, there is a phenomenon known as the 'death wobble' that is important to be aware of. It's important to do your research and make an informed decision.

  4. Jovanny Schmeler 2024-06-05

I am confident that I can resolve the issue with my 2018 Wrangler JL not starting, despite the fact that the dealer has been unable to determine the cause. As I plan to take the vehicle off-roading on the beach at my summer home on an island, it is imperative that I can trust it to start reliably. Although there are no licensed Chrysler dealers on the island, I am willing to make the necessary arrangements to bring the vehicle to the mainland for repair. I am hopeful that I will not need to invoke the state lemon law.

  5. Blaise Homenick 2024-04-16

I have had 5 Wrangler Sahara's in the past, but this one is particularly disappointing. The rattling and creaking noises are much worse, and the transmission shifts like garbage. Additionally, the amount of play in the steering is ridiculous. I am currently pursuing the lemon law to get out of this situation. Based on my experience, I will not be purchasing another Chrysler product again.

Positive 2018 Jeep Wrangler car reviews

  1. Elmer Schmeler 2024-11-13

I love this Jeep! It rides so much better and has faster pick up than my neighbor's 2017 JK. Plus, it looks better too. The exterior design changes make this Jeep much more appealing, from the redesigned bumpers and hood to the side vents and more. I absolutely love it!

  2. Kurtis Rodriguez 2024-10-23

I bought a 2018 Wrangler JL Unlimited as a weekend vehicle and to use for eye-catching advertising with business decals. As my 48-month lease comes to an end, I reflect on my experience. In the first 12 months, I experienced the scary 'death wobble' while driving around 70mph on the Interstate. Fortunately, my local dealership was able to fix the issue with the recommended repair from the factory. Since then, I have not had any issues with the death wobble. At around 20,000 miles, I had a check engine light come on, but the dealership was able to fix it with a simple computer system update at no charge. At 35,000 miles, I had to replace the driver's side seat belt assembly for $700 due to a problem with the airbag system. Although I wasn't thrilled about the cost, the dealership always fixes my issues on the first try. With 43,000 miles on the Jeep, the original tires still look great with no uneven wear. While the Jeep is still fun to drive, I wouldn't recommend it as a daily driver due to its tendency to wander on the highway and the need for frequent windshield replacements. Luckily, my local glass company provides original Mopar windshields with no deductible and they look as good as new.If you're looking for a fun and quirky vehicle to drive around town or take on weekend adventures, the Jeep Wrangler is a great choice. With its open-air design, you'll feel more connected to the world around you. I have the 2.0 liter 4-cylinder turbo engine and I'm really impressed with its responsiveness and reasonable mileage. It's also powerful enough to pass quickly at highway speeds. While I wouldn't recommend the Wrangler as a primary daily driver, it's perfect for off-roading or recreational driving. Overall, it's a great vehicle for those who want to add some excitement to their driving experience.

  3. Mohammad Rice 2024-09-20

Much better acceleration than the earlier JK with the same engine. The eight-speed transmission is a huge upgrade from the old five speed, especially during long-off-road descents. The interior trim and and leather seats are nicely designed and quite appealing, unlike some of the spartan interiors of past models. If you like all of the off-road capabilities of a Jeep but also enjoy creature comforts, it's worth considering spending a little more for the upgrades.

  4. Aurelio Jacobs 2024-09-16

My first car was a 1993 Jeep Wrangler. And I always had a Jeep until I had kids.... But now, I'm finally reunited with my beloved jeepy again! It may be slow going uphill and slow to accelerate, but it's not made to be fast... and that's totally fine with me. It's so much fun and I couldn't be happier. I love it so much!

  5. Gerald Hackett 2024-09-08

So far with only 350 miles on my new JL, I think this is the best Wrangler to come out in years! However, time will tell. I have noticed a slight wind noise coming from the hard top panels, but overall I am really enjoying my new ride.
