1997 Jeep Wrangler problems

jeep logo

The Jeep Wrangler is a series of compact and mid-size four-wheel drive off-road SUVs manufactured by Jeep since 1986, and currently in its fourth generation. The Wrangler JL, the most recent generation, was unveiled in late 2017 and is produced at Jeep's Toledo Complex.

The Wrangler is a direct progression from the World War II Jeep, through the CJ (Civilian Jeeps) produced by Willys, Kaiser-Jeep, and American Motors Corporation (AMC) from the mid-1940s through the 1980s. Although neither AMC nor Chrysler (after it purchased AMC in 1987) have claimed that the Wrangler was a direct descendant of the original military model — both the CJ Jeeps and the conceptually consistent Wrangler, with their solid axles and open top, have been called the Jeep model as central to Jeep's brand identity as the rear-engine 911 is to Porsche.

Similar to the Willys MB and the CJ Jeeps before it, all Wrangler models continue to use a separate body and frame, rigid live axles both front and rear, a tapering nose design with flared fenders, a fold-flat windshield and can be driven without doors. Also, with few exceptions, they have part-time four-wheel drive systems, with the choice of high and low gearing, and standard open bodies with removable hard or soft tops. However, the Wrangler series was specifically redesigned to be safer and more comfortable on-road, to attract more daily drivers, by upgrading its suspension, drivetrain, and interior, compared to the CJ line. The suspension on all Wranglers included trackbars and anti-roll bars, and, from the 1997 TJ onwards, front and rear coil springs instead of the previous leaf springs.

From 2004 on, the Wrangler has been complemented with long-wheelbase versions, called Wrangler Unlimited. 2004-2006 models were longer versions with 2 doors. In 2004 only automatic transmission-equipped “Unlimited” versions were sold. In 2005 both an automatic and manual 6-speed (NSG-370) were offered. Since 2007, the long-wheelbase Wranglers were four-door models, offering over 20 in (508 mm) more room. By mid-2017 the four-door models represented three-quarters of all new Wranglers on the market.

Common 1997 Jeep Wrangler problems

Based on the information gathered from various sources, here is a list of common problems with the Jeep Wrangler 1997 based on complaints from owners:

  • Engine Popping (Backfiring): Engine popping, which is essentially backfiring, is a common issue in the second generation of Jeep Wranglers (1997-2006). This issue can result in power loss, engine damage, and decreased fuel efficiency.
  • Leaking Door Seals: Leaking door seals are another common problem reported by owners of Jeep Wranglers. This issue can lead to water leaks inside the vehicle, potentially causing damage to the interior.
  • Differential Pinion Seal: The differential pinion seal is prone to failure in 1997-2006 Jeep Wranglers. This can result in oil leaks, affecting the vehicle's drivability and potentially leading to more severe mechanical issues.
  • Exhaust Manifold Bolt Failure: In the 1987-1995 Jeep Wranglers, exhaust manifold bolt failure is a known issue. This problem can cause the manifold to become misshapen, leading to potential exhaust leaks and engine performance issues.
  • Body Damage: Due to the off-road nature of Jeep Wranglers, older models, like those from 1987-1995, are more likely to have body damage. This can affect the aesthetics and structural integrity of the vehicle.
  • Oil Leaks: Older Jeep Wranglers, including those from 1987-1995, are susceptible to oil leaks. Diagnosing the source of oil leaks can be challenging, and addressing this issue promptly is crucial to prevent further damage to the engine.
  • Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM) Failure: Vehicles between 2007 and 2015, including the Jeep Wrangler, have experienced issues with the TIPM. This module controls various electronic functions in the vehicle and can lead to significant malfunctions if faulty.
  • Automatic Transmission Issues: Since 2005, Jeep Wrangler owners have reported problems with automatic transmissions getting stuck in one gear. This issue can impact the vehicle's performance and safety, requiring timely repairs.
  • Frame Rot: Frame rot is a common problem in Jeep Wranglers, especially in older models like the 1997 version . Detecting and addressing frame rot early is crucial to prevent structural integrity issues and ensure the vehicle remains safe to drive.

These common problems highlight the importance of regular maintenance and prompt repairs to keep Jeep Wranglers running smoothly and safely.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-03-01
  • VIN: 1J4FY19SOVP
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: I HAVE OWNED THIS VEHICLE SINCE IT WAS BRAND NEW. IT HAS BEEN GARAGE KEPT FOR APPROX. 20 OF ITS 21YRS. THE REAR FRAME WHERE THE TRAILING ARMS ARE ATTACHED TO THE BRACKETS RUSTED OUT. THE DRIVER SIDE TRAILING ARMS WERE ALMOST READY TO SEPARATE FROM THE FRAME DUE TO THE FRAME RUSTING FROM THE INSIDE OUT. I HAD TO CUT OUT THE SECTION AND REPLACE IT WITH A SAFE T CAP PATCH. CUTTING OPEN THE FRAME SHOWED EXTENSIVE RUST ON THE INSIDE OF THE FRAME. I CHECKED MY PASSENGER SIDE LUCKILY NOT AS BAD AS THE DRIVER SIDE BUT WILL HAVE TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE IT DOES HAVE SIGNS OF RUSTING FROM THE INSIDE OUT IN THE EXACT SAME PLACE. AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH IT APPEARS THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM FOR THE JEEP TJ'S. JEEP CUT SEVERAL HOLES IN THE SIDES OF THE FRAME THAT ALLOWED WATER AND DEBRIS ACCESS TO THE INSIDE OF THE FRAME RAIL BUT DID NOT PUT ANT DRAIN HOLES IN THE BOTTOM OF THE FRAME TO ALLOW THE WATER/DEBRIS TO ESCAPE.

FROM THE OUTSIDE IT LOOKS BRAND NEW. AFTER EXAMINATION I FOUND THE ENTIRE FRAME HAS RUSTED OUT FORM THE INSIDE OUT AND WAS FULL OF CHUNKS OF METAL. I BELIEVE THIS TO BE A MASSIVE SAFETY HAZARD THAT JEEP DESIGNED A FRAME THAT HOLDS WATER AND SALT AND WILL RUST OUT WITHOUT THE OWNER EVEN KNOWING HOW DANGEROUS IT IS TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-08-05
  • VIN: 1J4FY29P3VP
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: WHEN COLD, JEEP STARTS AND RUNS FINE. AFTER ENGINE WARMS UP, OIL PRESSURE WOULD DROP AND JEEP WOULD ALMOST DIE. IF I SHUT IT OFF AND TRY TO RESTART WHILE STILL WARM, JEEP WOULD HAVE A HARD TIME STARTING AND IF IT DID START, IT WOULD IDLE EXTREMELY ROUGH AND BARELY ACCELERATE. ONCE I GOT SPEED UP, IT RAN FINE UNTIL I STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT AND IT WOULD ACT LIKE IT WAS GOING TO DIE AND THE OIL PRESSURE GAUGE WOULD BOTTOM OUT. DEALER PUT MANUAL GAUGES ON IT AND DETERMINED IT WAS THE OIL SENDING UNIT. OIL PRESSURE NOW HOLDS AT 20 WHEN AT IDLE. THE ISSUE WITH THE ROUGH IDLE AND LOSS OF POWER STILL PERSISTS AFTER THE ENGINE WARMS UP. AFTER READING ALL OF THE COMPLAINTS, THIS SEEMS TO BE A RECURRING ISSUE WITH THIS MODEL. REALLY DON'T WANT TO WASTE MONEY TRYING TO GUESS AT WHAT IS THE ISSUE. AS MANY PEOPLE THAT THERE ARE HAVING SIMILAR ISSUES, JEEP SHOULD STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCT AND ISSUE A RECALL. VERY DISAPPOINTED.

  • Summary: NOTICED WOBBLE UNDERNEATH WHILE DRIVING. INSPECTED UNDERNEATH AND NOTICED LIGHT SHOWING BETWEEN TRANSFER CASE SKID PLATE AND FRAME (SHOULD BE TIGHT) AND BOLT HANGING DOWN. TOOK INTO SHOP AND LOWER MID FRAME ON BOTH SIDES IS COMPLETELY RUSTED THROUGH ALLOWING SKID PLATE BOLTS TO FALL OUT WITH NUTS STILL ATTACHED. SKID PLATE ALSO SERVES AS TRANSFER CASE MOUNT AND WHEN IT DROPS THE DRIVESHAFT WOBBLES. ULTIMATELY IF IT HAD COMPLETELY LET GO ON THE HIGHWAY THE REAR DRIVESHAFT WOULD HAVE LOCKED UP AND LOCKED THE REAR WHEELS CAUSING UNCONTROLLED SKID, OR THE DRIVESHAFT WOULD BREAK CAUSING DANGER TO THE PASSENGERS.

Negative 1997 Jeep Wrangler car reviews

  1. Donny Kuphal 2024-10-25

The 1997 Wrangler is a disaster, as confirmed by my personal experience, discussions with dealers, and my dad who is a certified master mechanic. In just 1 1/2 years of owning the car, I have already encountered four major problems that cost me over $1,500. Unfortunately, the company's policy is to require the replacement of entire defective systems instead of minor repairs, resulting in a hefty fee that the company refuses to cover. These issues are a result of design flaws in the first year of the new model.

  2. Jeremy Lowe 2024-09-06

I absolutely adore my Jeep! It's been a lifelong dream of mine to own one, and I finally convinced my husband to get one with me. Being a Jeep person means loving it for all its quirks and charms. It's such a fun vehicle that truly lives up to the Jeep name. Even though I have a 4-cylinder engine, it's still a blast to drive, especially when I put it in 4 low and tackle any terrain. I haven't made any modifications to it and I'm still happy with it. Plus, it's a bold red color, which is perfect for making a statement on the road. And of course, I have a soft top in a lovely tan color - what's the point of having a Jeep if you can't take the top down and enjoy the sunshine?

Jeeps are amazing cars! They're so much fun and incredibly reliable. While the ride can be a bit bumpy, you can easily make it more comfortable by investing in some padded seat covers. However, I would strongly advise against getting a Jeep with a 4-cylinder engine. I made that mistake with my own Jeep and it's been a struggle to pass cars on the highway at 60mph.

I confidently own a 97 TJ 2.5L 5-speed Jeep, which I have successfully converted into an off-road vehicle with 33-13.50 LTBS and a 5-inch lift. Despite having to replace the engine twice, once at 27,000 and again at 93,000, and the computer at 140,000, I have managed to keep it running smoothly, and it currently has 156,000 miles on it.

This is my fourth jeep and I can't say enough positive things about them. The outdoor reputation of the jeep definitely lives up to it. Over the past year, I have put 30,000 miles on it and have not had any major problems. I take it on the highway every week and it has started and run well every day this winter. Currently, it has 115,000 miles and I am happy to report that there are no leaks of any type. Additionally, it handles much better than you would think. I would definitely buy another one in the future.

I purchased my Wrangler with 68K miles about two years ago and have since put over 90K miles on it. It has been a reliable and enjoyable vehicle to drive. Originally intended as a weekend car, it has now become my everyday driver and I couldn't be happier. Living in Florida, I often receive envious looks from other drivers on the road. I opted for an automatic transmission after experiencing issues with clutches in my previous Jeep. While I do miss the power and better MPG's of a 5-speed, I am content with my decision. Even young girls admire my Wrangler, although not as much as my old Mustang. I appreciate the slower speed as fast cars are not a good fit for me, as evidenced by my previous clutch issues.

The ride comfort may not be the smoothest, but let's be honest, if you're interested in purchasing one of these, you're probably more focused on its ability to take you anywhere than on comfort. My 4-cylinder model gets around 21mpg on the highway and 17mpg in the city. I've owned it for a year and a half and have only had to replace the tires (which I did when I first bought it). It currently has 125,000 miles on it and runs perfectly.

If you're looking for a reliable car that can take you anywhere you want to go, consider buying a Wrangler. I recommend getting the 4.0 engine as it is stronger. Personally, I have driven over 96k miles and the engine is still going strong without any problems. Keep in mind that SUVs tend to have a bumpy ride, but if you're up for the adventure, Jeep is the grandfather of SUVs. It's a blast to drive in the winter with its 4x4 capabilities and in the summer with the top down and doors off. I suggest buying a hard top and an aftermarket soft top (Best Top) as it comes with full metal doors.

Your Jeep has been a reliable companion for over 105,000 miles! Despite the poor mileage, it starts up every morning and the driver seat is comfortable with a secure seatbelt that keeps you in place over all terrain. While you had both the hardtop and soft top, unfortunately, the soft top ripped off while driving on the highway. However, you still recommend the Jeep as it was well worth the money you paid in 1997, $18,000, and has great resale value. Although you are getting tired of the water puddles, you have taken steps to remove the musty smell by removing all of the carpet and plugs. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!
