2016 Jeep Wrangler problems

The Jeep Wrangler is a series of compact and mid-size four-wheel drive off-road SUVs manufactured by Jeep since 1986, and currently in its fourth generation. The Wrangler JL, the most recent generation, was unveiled in late 2017 and is produced at Jeep's Toledo Complex.

The Wrangler is a direct progression from the World War II Jeep, through the CJ (Civilian Jeeps) produced by Willys, Kaiser-Jeep, and American Motors Corporation (AMC) from the mid-1940s through the 1980s. Although neither AMC nor Chrysler (after it purchased AMC in 1987) have claimed that the Wrangler was a direct descendant of the original military model — both the CJ Jeeps and the conceptually consistent Wrangler, with their solid axles and open top, have been called the Jeep model as central to Jeep's brand identity as the rear-engine 911 is to Porsche.

Similar to the Willys MB and the CJ Jeeps before it, all Wrangler models continue to use a separate body and frame, rigid live axles both front and rear, a tapering nose design with flared fenders, a fold-flat windshield and can be driven without doors. Also, with few exceptions, they have part-time four-wheel drive systems, with the choice of high and low gearing, and standard open bodies with removable hard or soft tops. However, the Wrangler series was specifically redesigned to be safer and more comfortable on-road, to attract more daily drivers, by upgrading its suspension, drivetrain, and interior, compared to the CJ line. The suspension on all Wranglers included trackbars and anti-roll bars, and, from the 1997 TJ onwards, front and rear coil springs instead of the previous leaf springs.

From 2004 on, the Wrangler has been complemented with long-wheelbase versions, called Wrangler Unlimited. 2004-2006 models were longer versions with 2 doors. In 2004 only automatic transmission-equipped “Unlimited” versions were sold. In 2005 both an automatic and manual 6-speed (NSG-370) were offered. Since 2007, the long-wheelbase Wranglers were four-door models, offering over 20 in (508 mm) more room. By mid-2017 the four-door models represented three-quarters of all new Wranglers on the market.

Common 2016 Jeep Wrangler problems

The 2016 Jeep Wrangler has several common problems that owners have reported. The most frequent complaints are related to engine issues, which often manifest as a check engine light on the dashboard. The source of the problem can be determined by reading the code, and it's usually resolved by replacing the cylinder head or lifters.

Another issue that has been reported is transmission failure, although this is less common. There have been cases where the transmission fails around 30,000 miles, so it's essential to listen for excessive noise while shifting during a test drive.

Bluetooth connectivity not working properly is also a common problem with the 2016 Jeep Wrangler. This is most likely a software issue with either the phone or the car, and it can be resolved by resetting the infotainment system, which should allow the device to connect again.

There are four recalls affecting the 2016 Jeep Wrangler, which is average for an SUV of its age. These recalls are safety-related and include the clockspring assembly, front impact sensor, passenger airbag inflator, and the seat belt buckle. Addressing these recalls is crucial to protect the driver and passengers, but they will not cause any mechanical breakdowns.

The 2016 Jeep Wrangler's technology is basic, and it lags behind other SUVs in this regard. The infotainment system is dated, and there is no advanced safety technology. If technology is essential to you, then the redesigned 2018 model is a better choice. Standard technology includes an AM/FM/CD stereo system with AUX input and MP3 playback capabilities, while optional upgrades include navigation and an improved Alpine stereo system with 9-speakers.

The Wrangler's safety features include airbags, ABS, disc brakes, stability control, rollover protection, and traction control. However, safety ratings are below average, earning only a 3-star rating in government crash tests.

The 2016 Jeep Wrangler has one engine available, a 3.6L V6 with 285 horsepower. The towing capacity is low for a midsize SUV, at 3,500 pounds. Seating in the Wrangler is uncomfortable and basic, even on higher-end models. There is a decent amount of room in the front seats, but the rear seats are cramped on both body styles. The 2-door model has less room than most compact cars, with only 12.8 cu. ft. of room behind the seats, while the 4-door model has 31.5 cu. ft. of space.

The 2016 Jeep Wrangler is available in 2-door and 4-door configurations, with a price range of $31,826 to $44,571. It's not the best SUV for the money, focusing heavily on off-road enthusiasts and Jeep fans with limited-edition models. New features for 2016 include changes to the Sahara model, and the introduction of the Black Bear Edition. Reliability rankings are average according to J.D. Power, with fewer complaints than older models. However, fuel economy is below average, placing it near the bottom of the midsize SUV lineup. It gets a combined fuel rating of 18 miles per gallon.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-08
  • VIN: 1C4AJWAG2GL
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The airbag light came on, then went off. This happened for a while, meanwhile, the horn stopped working and the controls in the steering wheel were incapable of anything for the radio. I was informed it was a bad steering clock spring and it needed to be replaced. Part # 5156106AG We searched for a recall, and there is one for the 2016 Jeep Wrangler for a failing steering clock spring, only my car’s vin number didn’t match the recall. It appears the previous owner had an issue with the airbags, that was subsequently repaired before I owned this vehicle. I believe it was repaired incorrectly, or is still faulty, as it is broken once again. The coincidence of this being recalled for the same make and model, but not for my specific vehicle is difficult to comprehend. What automobile has more than one need to repair airbags that were never deployed? I have not gotten it repaired yet because the dealer is charging greater than $900 for just the part. I found it online for less than $200.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-17
  • VIN: 1C4BJWDG3GL
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: ABS and traction control lights recently started coming on upon starting the vehicle. This morning, I took to repair shop and had brakes checked. I was told nothing was wrong, that brake pads look good, brake fluid level is good. When I returned home, I checked the NTHSA website to check for recalls on these modules. Saw another complaint regarding the exact same thing I am experiencing. That person stated that the dealership indicated that no fix is available as yet due to a supposed redesign of these components. So now what? I have no choice but to drive a vehicle that has ABS and traction control safety systems that are unavailable. While on the site, I also checked for recalls and found 5 recalls for which I was never notified, including air bag non-deployment. Great. I want to get rid of this vehicle, but alas, interest rates make it impossible.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-10
  • VIN: 1C4HJWFG4GL
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: Jeep Wrangler JK model with ABS issue. I had the "Brake" "ABS" and "Traction Control" light come on my dash. I took my Jeep to the dealership to diagnose the problem and have it resolved. I was told the "ABS Control Module" had a C2200 code that stated internal fault with the ABS Control Module. I had the dealership order one and I paid for it so I can make sure my family is safe driving the Jeep. I was informed by the dealership that the part was on back order and there was no timeline on replenishing off stock. The part was on "Engineering Hold" and would not be available anytime soon. The dealership gave my Jeep back to me and told me since it was the internal electrical part of the ABS control that I would be safe in driving my Jeep without this safety system. I have read multiple forms online stating others are having the same issue across the USA.

SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-19
  • VIN: 1C4BJWDGXGL
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: On July 19, 2024, my ABS and TRAC Control light (Anti-Lock Brake Light) came on. I took my vehicle in to the Myrtle Beach Jeep Dealership in South Carolina and after a complete checkI was informed that C2200-ANS Module Internal will require replacement and the part was currently being re-engineered and was on backorder for at least thirty days. When even tried calling other dealerships and was told that they are having the same problem. On August 27, 2024 I called and spoke with my Jeep service advisor (Jennie Jo, 843-448-1191) and was told that the ABS module is still be re-engineered and will not be available for another thirty days or longer. I saw on-line that numerous Jeep owners are having this serious problem with no relief. There has been no-recall and we cannot drive our vehicle do to the safety risk. I do not know why Jeep is not providing some relief or alternative to customer. I have never experience this type of situation. The dealerships are waiting on Jeep to provide the part and the part is not cheap, over $800 dollars to replace. Jeep needs to inform customer that this is a major safety issue and conduct a mass recall of these other Jeeps. We need help.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-23
  • VIN: 1C4AJWAG8GL
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: The warning lights indicating a problem with ABS/Traction system. Vehicle taken to Wallace Jeep on [XXX] and diagnosed as "ABS Module Internal Failure". Service Manager advised the module was unavailable for several months with MOPAR indicating the "part was on hold until engineering review was complete" and had been that way for several months with numerous extensions and no definitive available date and they were unable to order one for my vehicle with 28 already on order. Living in South Florida where it rains almost daily, driving without operable ABS and Traction Assist for several months now with no idea when parts available is very hazardous. SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-04
  • VIN: 1C4BJWEG6GL
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: "Jeep Death Wobble" - I was informed by my mechanic that the Automatic Braking System module will need to be replaced. This was after numerous attempts to fix what is being referred to online as the Jeep Death Wobble online - widespread complaints online and on Jeep forums. Previous attempts to resolve this issue included alignment, new pads, brake pads, new brake rotors, 4 new tires. Despite all of this expense ($2k +) the jeep continued to wobble erratically and unsafely at around 44 MPH because the brakes are engaging or partially engaging. The temperature of the brakes and rims exceeded the range of the brake temperature sensor my mechanic used so he cautioned the car could vehicle could catch on fire if driven more than a short distance. The ABS module is on back order for months so I am out of luck to fix the vehicle. Jeep claims this is only a supply chain issue but based on what I see as widespread problems, it seems to also be a demand issue - this is happening to many other drivers and should be a safety concern for instability (hence the name Death Wobble) if not also for fires.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-19
  • VIN: 1C4BJWDG4GL
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: My first issue is my windshield wiper fluid only works or comes out once every couple days. My 2nd issue is my TPM system has been blinking and does not show the pressure on very hot days. Both issues have been going on for over a year. 3rd issue is I can no longer use the AM/FM radio. 4th issue is my brakes went out due to a faulty rear passenger side brake hose in March. Over the past 2 weeks something has been wrong with using my brakes. Today I just found out both front brake hoses are defective. Due to these defective hoses, my rotors also need to be replaced. My automotive mechanic said this is very common. My car only has 54k miles on it. I feel like these issues should not be happening on a car that only has 54K miles on it. I feel like many children are in danger because of these hoses being defective. What if a parent has this happen and they are unable to stop on the interstate or anywhere really. I almost wrecked when my brakes went out in March, but luckily I was able to stop before hitting anything. The car behind me almost hit me as well. Can you please investigate these issues as soon as possible before anyone gets seriously hurt. Thank you.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-01
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: 2016 Wrangler 4 door 4x4 Automatic transmission, 110,000 miles, 4x4 used maybe for 30 minutes total in it's lifetime since I purchased it brand new. Transmission does not want to shift out of 4th into 5th, this was noticed when my RPM's never seemed to drop going down interstate at any speed, after the transmission has already shifted through 1st, 2nd, 3rd into 4th. I've noticed also that the transmission tends to linger in 3rd gear to long as well. I've had to put into manual mode and shift manually to get it out of 4th into 5th gear. This has been ongoing for a very long time, dealership unable to identify problem. Is this an isolated problem or others experiencing this also?

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-24
  • VIN: 1C4BJWDG7GL
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: The ABS warning lights come on and go off intermittently. Occasionally when I brake I can feel the brake pedal shudder. This problem has occurred at various speeds from 5mph to freeway driving at 65mph. This problem has been happening for several years but only occasionally. I would estimate it started at about 30,000 miles only occasionally and started more frequently about 50,000 miles. We love our Jeep and are diligent about maintenance. Now it is almost constant. I have taken it to a trusted independent mechanic who could not detect the problem over the past 2 years because it didn’t happen while in the shop. We have had a brake job done and that has not corrected the problem. We took it to get hoses replaced yesterday and got a call from our mechanic stating that the ABS warning system went on for them and they were able to detect a faulty sensor and will replace it. This most recent incident happened when moving vehicle to lift for repairs of heater hoses. The date is 5/24/2024. We have experienced similar and exact problems as other owners complained except have not taken our vehicle to the dealer. Seems it’s about time something be done by Jeep.

  • VIN: 1C4BJWDG5GL
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: Vehicle cel for misfire. Replace plugs and coils. Still happens. Dealership says it needs a new engine? My research shows that this is an extremely common problem with Jeep engines. I am aware of a class action suit regarding this issue. I’m not sure of the status. Vehicle has just under 129k miles and is therefore out of warranty. Jeep/FCA knew these engines had problems and continued to sell them without disclosing the highly likely problems ownere would encounter.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-01
  • VIN: 1C4BJWEG2GL
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: *The ABS alert is on and it is disabling the antilock breaking system. The dealership has inspected the vehicle. *The safety at hand is that my antilock breaking system is not working. I was told that there is a chance if I had to break suddenly, the vehicle ABS will not work and the breaks will lock up, causing me to skid. They cautioned me to pump the breaks in the event I need to suddenly stop. *The Dealer has confirmed that this module is broken. They have inspected the vehicle and they were the ones who provided me with this information. *I was told the ABS module is inoperable at this time and the part has been on back order since I reported it in December 2023. *The alert/notification warning lights go on each time the vehicle is started and stays on the entire time the vehicle is on. The lights first appeared in early October (intermittently). We took the vehicle to Jeep and they could not duplicate the lights coming on or the problem and sent us away. *The warning lights continued to come on intermittently and we took the Jeep back to Jeep/Chrysler in December and we were then told the ABS module was broken. They placed an order for the part at that time. *I have called the dealership multiple times to see when the part would arrive and the dealership informed me that the ABS module for my vehicle is back ordered due an engineering review in progress for that part. Each month I am told the same information. I called Chrysler customer service and have been assigned a Case Manager. Today, the Case Manager gave me the same information and told me that the issue is under review and I will receive an update every 5 days.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-15
  • VIN: 1C4HJWDG8GL
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS
  • Summary: At 70000 miles our vehicle has an airbag warning light illuminated on the dashboard. After diagnostics it was determined that a OBD / DTC code was present : "B1B06 Driver Airbag Squib 2 Circuit Open" Per the manufacturer FCA, this code indicates an issue with the Airbag clockspring, and the driver side airbag may not deploy in case of a crash, hence placing the driver at risk of injury or death. Although FCA issued a safety recall for this issue, it only covers vehicles manufactured before May-2-2016. Our vehicle was manufactured on May-27 yet is suffering from the exact same issue, but not covered by the safety recall as per FCA representatives. "Safety Recall S40 / NHTSA 16V-288 Airbag Clockspring" Attached. This is apparently a known issue on many Jeep Wranglers, not just the ones manufactured between the posted dates, yet FCA does not offer support for vehicle owners whose airbag may not deploy in the case of a crash.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-26
  • VIN: 1C4BJWFG0GL
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: On multiple occasions, while operating my vehicle on the freeway, I have encountered a highly alarming problem. The engine of my car has unexpectedly shut off, resulting in a sudden loss of power and control. This has happened when driving between 45-75mph. This has placed me and other road users in extremely dangerous situations, as it has occurred at high speeds where maneuvering and reacting swiftly are essential. I have taken immediate action to have the issue investigated and resolved by authorized service centers. However, despite their efforts, the problem persists, leaving me deeply concerned about the reliability and safety of my vehicle. This recurring issue indicates a potential flaw in the design or manufacturing of the engine or related components.

Negative 2016 Jeep Wrangler car reviews

I recently purchased a 2016 Jeep Unlimited Oscar Mike and I absolutely love driving it! However, I have a question for fellow Jeep owners. Since purchasing it in February, I have had to take it to the dealership every month to have my brakes worked on. Despite having new brakes on both the front and back, my Jeep has always made a squeaking noise. The dealership has attempted to fix it, but the noise persists. During the last repair, new brakes were installed on the back and now my Jeep makes a clenching sound every time I brake at low speeds. I was informed that this is a normal sound for a Jeep, but I was not aware of this when I made my purchase. It can be embarrassing when picking up my kids from school. Can anyone offer advice on whether this is a common issue with Jeeps?

In 2016, I purchased a Jeep Wrangler JKU from a dealership. Recently, with only 60119 miles on the car, I discovered some issues and contacted the dealership. They helped me get in touch with Chrysler to cover the maintenance on the blown engine head gaskets. On 23Feb20, I noticed some excessive vapor coming out of my exhaust on my way home. I checked my coolant and oil levels and found low coolant levels, but it was still within the normal range. Since I didn't have any other problems or temperature changes, I parked my car at home. The following day, I contacted a dealership to check for maintenance and was advised to bring it in if it was drivable. I drove my vehicle to World Jeep in Shrewsberry NJ where they determined that my head gaskets were damaged and needed repair. The dealership recommended the additional replacement of the radiator, which Chrysler was informed of and discussed terms for covering the repair of the vehicle as the failure occurred right at warranty. Following the maintenance and repair, I drove my vehicle home and submitted the paid bills which a Chrysler rep had discussed for payment. However, I found that the engine was still having a problem with air in the radiator/coolant line and immediately took my vehicle back to the dealership for a coolant purge. During inspection, the Chrysler master mechanic noticed that the main coolant fan was not operating as expected. The main coolant fan operation was intermittent which would have caused a long term overheating as the root cause failure of the head gasket which was determined by the Chrysler facility to have been failing over the last 10,000 miles. Chrysler was contacted and approved maintenance as with the other failed items. Following replacement, I drove my vehicle home attempting to drive it later the next day when I found my vehicle unable to start. I contacted World Jeep again and was able to start my vehicle and drive it to the dealership for maintenance inspection.I am sorry to report that the dealership found a defective gasket installed, a clogged heater core, and a knocking noise in the engine. I contacted Chrysler for their recommendation and they suggested replacing the engine. However, I have had some difficulty receiving a response from Chrysler and they have changed case managers four times. Despite their previous agreement to help cover the repair costs, they are now only willing to assist with 50% of the engine replacement. As a loyal Jeep Wrangler customer, I am disappointed that I have not received the appropriate assistance for a failed component that caused significant damage over a long period of time, only to be noticed at the end of my warranty. I understand that this is not an uncommon problem in multiple Jeep Wranglers, and I hope that Chrysler will take this into consideration and provide a satisfactory resolution.

I am writing a review about the Wrangler that my close friend used to own and finally traded in at 48K. I have extensive knowledge about this vehicle as I have worked on it many times. Unfortunately, the reliability of this vehicle is not up to par. It has had several mechanical issues such as disappearing coolant (I used to carry distilled water to top it off as needed), broken wheel studs (even though it was never taken off-road), broken oil filter housing, and poor fuel economy. Additionally, it is quite noisy and could use some improvement in terms of fuel efficiency. Although it is not the most powerful vehicle, it consumes a lot of gas. Lastly, the interior could use some refinement as it seems that cheap parts were used to save money.

Use Edmunds and True Car to find out what others are paying before going to the dealer. It saved me thousands off the MSRP. Don't be afraid to negotiate with a couple of dealers to get your best deal.

I've had my Jeep for 7 years now and I still love it. I haven't had any major problems with it. I've taken it on several 1000 mile trips each way and even had it in 3 feet deep mud, but it still remains the most all-around vehicle you can buy.

It may ride a bit rough and be a bit challenging to get in and out of, but I absolutely love it! It has the ability to go anywhere and carry anything I need. Although the amenities may be a bit primitive for a top-of-the-line SUV, it's still my favorite for driving around town. It's also surprisingly easy to work on and for some reason, it gets more attention than my Porsche Cayenne S. I've owned it for two years now and have had no problems or surprises. While it may not be the best choice for a long trip, it's perfect for short hops and unpaved roads.

Although my 2016 Willys has only 26,000 miles, it is showing major rust issues, radio issues, a misfire (engine light), and the steering wheel controls have stopped working. As a confident Jeep owner, I expect my vehicle to perform at its best, even with low mileage. These issues are unacceptable for a Jeep of this age and mileage.

  5. Nico Morissette 2024-10-07

My 2016 Jeep Wrangler Sport is a solid, dependable and powerful vehicle that handles the driving challenges in rural northern Minnesota with ease. It was ordered with air conditioning and trailer package as the only options, keeping the price low! Gas mileage is around 18-20 mpg because I'm driving the vehicle as it is designed to be used, mostly on back country two-lane no shoulder roads, often rough, 60 mph, slow down for surprise curves, animals, drivers, machinery, and small towns. Aftermarket add-ons are easy to install, affordable, and allow you to make it your own. The steering requires a little more attention than other SUVs, the seating is for adults, and the ride is solid. I have driven real military jeeps in the early 70s, and in 27 years of service found out that nothing was as good or dependable to replace it, including the Hummer which was overpriced and overrated. I have owned several vehicles before, averaging 100,000 to 120,000 miles per vehicle before trade-in/replacement. They have all been very good vehicles, except for the Outlander which was a mistake. It was highly rated for safety and good mileage, but city-based thinking resulted in a car that is useless outside of the city. Safety-wise, the Jeep is safe if you drive normally and like having metal protecting you instead of designer techno garbage that provides recalls every other week because it doesn't work and was made in Mexico/China.
