1999 Jeep Wrangler problems

jeep logo

The Jeep Wrangler is a series of compact and mid-size four-wheel drive off-road SUVs manufactured by Jeep since 1986, and currently in its fourth generation. The Wrangler JL, the most recent generation, was unveiled in late 2017 and is produced at Jeep's Toledo Complex.

The Wrangler is a direct progression from the World War II Jeep, through the CJ (Civilian Jeeps) produced by Willys, Kaiser-Jeep, and American Motors Corporation (AMC) from the mid-1940s through the 1980s. Although neither AMC nor Chrysler (after it purchased AMC in 1987) have claimed that the Wrangler was a direct descendant of the original military model — both the CJ Jeeps and the conceptually consistent Wrangler, with their solid axles and open top, have been called the Jeep model as central to Jeep's brand identity as the rear-engine 911 is to Porsche.

Similar to the Willys MB and the CJ Jeeps before it, all Wrangler models continue to use a separate body and frame, rigid live axles both front and rear, a tapering nose design with flared fenders, a fold-flat windshield and can be driven without doors. Also, with few exceptions, they have part-time four-wheel drive systems, with the choice of high and low gearing, and standard open bodies with removable hard or soft tops. However, the Wrangler series was specifically redesigned to be safer and more comfortable on-road, to attract more daily drivers, by upgrading its suspension, drivetrain, and interior, compared to the CJ line. The suspension on all Wranglers included trackbars and anti-roll bars, and, from the 1997 TJ onwards, front and rear coil springs instead of the previous leaf springs.

From 2004 on, the Wrangler has been complemented with long-wheelbase versions, called Wrangler Unlimited. 2004-2006 models were longer versions with 2 doors. In 2004 only automatic transmission-equipped “Unlimited” versions were sold. In 2005 both an automatic and manual 6-speed (NSG-370) were offered. Since 2007, the long-wheelbase Wranglers were four-door models, offering over 20 in (508 mm) more room. By mid-2017 the four-door models represented three-quarters of all new Wranglers on the market.

Common 1999 Jeep Wrangler problems

The Jeep Wrangler 1999 is known for several common problems, primarily related to the ignition switch, the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM), automatic transmission issues, and engine popping.

  • Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM) Failure: The TIPM is responsible for controlling low voltage electronics in the vehicle. In the Jeep Wrangler, models from 2007 to 2015, including the 1999 model, are known to have issues with the TIPM. These problems can result in power windows not working, stalling while moving, airbags deploying at random, and other unpredictable behavior.
  • Automatic Transmission Issues: The 1999 Jeep Wrangler, along with models from 2005 onwards, has experienced problems with the automatic transmission. These issues can cause the vehicle to get stuck in one gear, especially at high speeds, and can result in recalls by the manufacturer.
  • Engine Popping: The 1999 Jeep Wrangler, specifically in the second generation (1997-2006), is known for engine popping, which is caused by unintended combustion of fuel outside the combustion chamber. This issue can lead to power loss, engine damage, and decreased fuel efficiency.

These common problems in the Jeep Wrangler 1999 can lead to significant repair costs and inconvenience for owners. It is essential to be aware of these issues and consider them when purchasing or maintaining a 1999 Jeep Wrangler.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-05-01
  • VIN: 1J4FY49S0XP
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: I WAS DRIVING AN OLD WASHED OUT AND BUMPY MOUNTAIN ROAD. DUE TO THE BUMPS, I COULD NOT GO MUCH FASTER THAN 15MPH. THE ROAD/GROUND WAS WET AND SLIPPERY SO I WAS IN 4HI. AFTER GOING DOWN THE ROAD FOR ABOUT 30 MINUTES AND GOING AROUND A TURN, THE AIRBAG LIGHT CAME ON. AS I TURNED THE WHEEL IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION, TO GO AROUND A LARGE DOWNED TREE, IT MOMENTARILY SHUT OFF, THEN RETURNED TO ON. I IMMEDIATELY TURNED THE JEEP OFF AND CHECKED THE AIRBAG FUSES. BOTH ARE GOOD. PUZZLED AND RATHER NERVOUS THAT THE AIRBAG MIGHT GO OFF IN MY FACE, I TURNED AROUND TO GO BACK TO THE MAIN ROAD. AFTER NERVOUSLY DRIVING A FEW MILES DOWN THE ROAD, I RETURNED THE JEEP TO THE SPEED LIMIT AND ATTEMPTED TO ENGAGE MY CRUISE CONTROL BUT, THE LIGHT WOULDN'T TURN ON. I TRIED ALL THE CRUISE CONTROL BUTTONS TO NO AVAIL. PULLED OVER AND CHECKED THE FUSEBOX AGAIN FOR THE CRUISE CONTROL FUSE BUT, I COULDN'T FIND ONE ANYWHERE. AFTER DRIVING ANOTHER 100 MILES HOME, I LET MY SISTER'S FIANCE, WHO'S A MECHANIC, CHECK IT WITH HIS SCAN TOOL. ACCORDING TO HIS SCAN TOOL, THE CLOCKSPRING HAS MALFUNCTIONED. AFTER DOING A FEW GOOGLE SEARCHES, IT'S APPARENT THAT THE COST TO HAVE THIS FIXED IS VERY HIGH. THE PART ITSELF IS OVER $200 AND NEEDS TO BE REPLACED BY A MECHANIC! LABOR IS GOING TO BE AT LEAST ANOTHER $200 BASED ON HOW MUCH TIME IT WILL TAKE AND THE FACT THAT IT WILL MORE THAN LIKELY HAVE TO BE DONE AT A DEALERSHIP. SHOULDN'T THIS BE A LIFETIME PART? WHY SHOULD I HAVE TO PAY TO HAVE THIS FIXED IF IT'S A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE? ANY RESPONSE WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED AS I DON'T HAVE THE MONEY TO HAVE THIS FIXED AND I'M RATHER NERVOUS TO DRIVE IT NOW. WHAT ARE THE ODDS OF THE AIRBAG GOING OFF?[XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-03-31
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: EVER SINCE I PURCHASED THE JEEP, IT HAS BEEN A RELIABLE VEHICLE. THE OTHER DAY, I WENT TO START IT AND THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER WAS UNRESPONSIVE AND THE AIRBAG LIGHT WAS ON. I TRIED REPLACING THE FUSE AND FOUND IT TO BE GOOD, RECEIVING POWER. I STARTED TO CHECK WEBSITES FOR SIMILAR PROBLEMS AND FOUND A RECALL FOR THE EXACT PROBLEM I WAS HAVING. THIS RECALL DESCRIBED EXACTLY WHAT WAS HAPPENING TO MY JEEP. THE RECALL IS FOUND HERE RECALL 99V117000: INSTRUMENT PANEL GROUND SCREWS LOOSE THE LEFT SIDE AND RIGHT SIDE INSTRUMENT PANEL WIRING GROUND ATTACHMENT SCREWS COULD LOOSEN OVER TIME. IF THE LEFT SIDE SCREW LOOSENS, THE INSTRUMENT PANEL GAUGES MAY NOT FUNCTION WHEN THE HEADLAMPS ARE TURNED ON. IF THE RIGHT SIDE SCREW LOOSENS, THE DEFROSTER BLOWER MOTOR MAY NOT FUNCTION. WELL, I TOOK A COPY OF THE RECALL TO MY LOCAL JEEP DEALERSHIP, BLUEBONNET JEEP IN NEW BRAUNFELS, TEXAS. AS SOON AS I WALKED THROUGH THE DOOR, I STARTED TELLING THEM ABOUT THE PROBLEM WITH THE JEEP AND HOW SIMILAR IT WAS TO THE RECALL. I SHOWED THEM A COPY OF THE RECALL AND CONTINUED TELLING THEM HOW IT WAS BEHAVING. THE DEALER ASKED ME IF I PURCHASED THE JEEP FROM THEM AND I TOLD THEM NO. THEY WERE VERY CONCERNED ABOUT ME NOT BUYING THE JEEP FROM THEM, THEY WENT OUT AND COPIED THE VIN NUMBER DOWN. THE ATTENDANT STATED THEY COULD NOT HELP ME BECAUSE IT WAS NOT SHOWING UP AS BEING A RECALL ISSUE. I TOLD THEM IT WAS GIVING ME ALL THE SAME PROBLEMS AS THIS RECALL AND THEY SAID THEY DID NOT CARE, IF THE NUMBER DOES NOT SHOW UP ON THEIR COMPUTER, THEY WILL NOT HELP. I BELIEVE THE ORIGINAL RECALL EFFECTS MORE MODELS OF JEEP THAN ORIGINALLY STATED AND RESPECTFULLY REQUEST THIS TO BE INVESTIGATED. THANKS. *TR

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2012-06-30
  • VIN: 1J4FY19S3XP
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: DRIVING MY 1999 JEEP WRANGLER SPORT 4.0 L6 5-SPEED MANUAL AT APPX. 65 MPH A SLIGHT VIBRATION CAME FROM THE GAS PEDAL. I PULLED OVER, AFTER CRAWLING UNDER THE VEHICLE I FOUND THE FRONT DRIVE SHAFT LOOSE AT THE JOINT CONNECTING TO MY STOCK NP231J TRANSFER CASE. FIGURING IT WAS JUST A WORN U-JOINT I CONTINUED ON MY WAY AT A MUCH SLOWER SPEED APPX. 35 MPH FOR ABOUT 300 YARDS THERE WAS A LOUD POP ALONG WITH METAL AND DIRT FLYING FROM UNDER THE JEEP WHICH MADE ME PULL OVER ONCE AGAIN THIS TIME OUT OF CONTROL AND ENDING UP IN THE DITCH. WHERE I FOUND THE NP231J SHATTERED IN 5 PIECES, MANY MORE WERE THROWN ONTO THE ROAD WAY.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2009-06-10
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: MY JEEP LOST ALL POWER TO THE CONSOLE/DASH DURING NIGHT DRIVING AND I COULD NOT MEASURE MY SPEED, RPMS, FUEL OR ANY OTHER GAUGES. THIS INCLUDED BOTH THE ANALOG (NEEDLE) AND DIGITAL (LED) GAUGES. MY 5-SPEED DROVE FINE THOUGH, NO SWEAT. SO THERE I WAS, DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD, AND I HAD NO WAY TO ASCERTAIN MY VELOCITY. THERE WAS NO WAY TO TELL IF I WAS GOING 20 MPH OR 120 MPH. IT WAS JUST ME, MY JEEP AND MY GUT INSTINCTS. SO, I PULLED A FONZIE AND SMACKED THE DASH, AND GAVE IT MY BEST "HEYYYYYYYY" AND YOU GUESSED IT - AFTER THAT ALL WAS WELL. THE LIGHTS CAME BACK AND I WAS DOING A COOL 60. BECAUSE I CAN'T DRIVE 55. AFTER A LITTLE INTERNET WIZARDRY ON MY FAVORITE SEARCH ENGINE, APPARENTLY THIS IS SIMPLY A LOOSE CONNECTION FROM THE DASH GROUND. BEING A JEEP OWNER, I SIMPLY REPLACED THE FAULTY SCREW AND DIDN'T WASTE MY TIME TAKING IT TO A DEALER OR WHINING ABOUT IT ONLINE. OH WAIT... I'M ACTUALLY ONLY REPORTING THIS PROBLEM BECAUSE I WANTED TO VALIDATE THE NHTSA COMPLAINT PROCESS. LOOKS LIKE IT IS WORKING. HEY V! *TR

I bought my Jeep used with 35,000 miles almost 2 years ago and I'm happy to say that I haven't had a single problem with it since. It's been a reliable companion through all seasons, handling snow like a champ in the winter and providing an exhilarating ride in the summer. When it comes to offroading, this Jeep really shines - it can handle rocks, sand, trails, and hill climbing with ease. I even removed the back seat for added space, turning it into a two-seater, and it's been perfect for my needs. I plan on keeping this Jeep for a while!

I've had my 4.0 litre for 3.5 years and I absolutely love it! However, I must admit that passengers may find it a bit tedious to ride in when we're traveling at speeds under 40. It's an excellent off-road vehicle, but unfortunately, I only get to take it off-road once every two months. Overall, it's a fantastic third car, but I wouldn't recommend it as a daily driver.

  3. Emmanuel Emard 2024-04-27

Great overall vehicle designed for the offroad and more than competent on the road. However, it may not be the best choice for areas where salt is used for winters as the underpinnings may begin to rust in just 2 years and the body may begin to peel and streak. This vehicle is definitely a cult classic and is best suited for genuine OR's. We recommend that urban yuppies consider other options.

Hi there! I noticed that you've had your Jeep since 2000 and it has 130K miles on it. It sounds like you've had quite the adventure with it! I'm glad to hear that you find it a blast to drive and that the 4.0 is bulletproof. I can imagine that replacing several parts like the transmission, transfer case, exhaust manifold, rear axle (3 times), and radiator can be a bit of a hassle, but it's great that you've been able to keep it running. I understand that the gas mileage isn't the best, especially with 33

It's a Jeep! With its lifted body, great wheels and tires, it could climb Mount Everest. It's so much fun to drive on or off-road. If you're looking for speed, this may not be the car for you, but if you want a fun, great-looking REAL Jeep, then this car is perfect!

This car is great as a tub on wheels, with a short turning radius and relatively high seating. I also appreciate the accessibility of the engine compartment and body parts. However, it can be quite noisy on the highway above 55 mph, and the fuel economy is not great even for a 4 cylinder. Despite these negatives, I would still buy it again. I'm especially intrigued by the new model with an extended wheelbase and storage.

I have the '99 Sport with pretty much every option on it, including both tops. The list price was about $26,000. In addition, I've added a 3 inch Teraflex lift and 33x10.5 BFG's on stock rims. The only problem I have had is the dash gauges go dead now and then, but you can easily fix it by popping the instrument cluster with your hand. This is actually my 2nd Jeep (the first one was a Cherokee, which I also bought new and lifted). I can tell you from experience that if you take care of them, they will take care of you. So far, I haven't had any real problems with it.

Hey there! I've been the proud owner of this amazing vehicle for 3 and a half years now. It's taken me on some incredible adventures, from the rugged mountains and beaches of the Lake Superior northwoods in the middle of winter, to the eastern Kansas foothills. I absolutely love driving it and there's nowhere it can't go! Admittedly, I've been driving it less since gas prices started to rise, and I've only put 3000 miles on it since January '05. Now, let me be honest with you, if you're looking for a comfortable ride, a Jeep might not be for you. But if you're looking for a thrilling ride that can handle any terrain, then the Wrangler is the perfect choice! I've found that the wear and tear has been comparable to every other car I've driven. So, whether you're cruising around town or embarking on an off-road adventure, the Wrangler won't disappoint. Go ahead and treat yourself to one!

  4. Darrel Koelpin 2024-07-02

I really appreciate this vehicle! I ordered it from the factory with almost every option, and I haven't regretted it at all. It is the most fun to drive, dependable and versatile vehicle I have ever owned. I use it to commute every day, and then use it for working around the property on the weekends. I have driven it in all kinds of weather and it has never let me down. This little truck will go anywhere and do anything!

  5. Shaun Beer 2024-06-24

I've driven off-road and it felt like driving on pavement. Smooth and strong. I'm so glad I found it and I'm amazed at its ability to handle anything on and off the road.
