2006 Jeep Wrangler problems

The Jeep Wrangler is a series of compact and mid-size four-wheel drive off-road SUVs manufactured by Jeep since 1986, and currently in its fourth generation. The Wrangler JL, the most recent generation, was unveiled in late 2017 and is produced at Jeep's Toledo Complex.

The Wrangler is a direct progression from the World War II Jeep, through the CJ (Civilian Jeeps) produced by Willys, Kaiser-Jeep, and American Motors Corporation (AMC) from the mid-1940s through the 1980s. Although neither AMC nor Chrysler (after it purchased AMC in 1987) have claimed that the Wrangler was a direct descendant of the original military model — both the CJ Jeeps and the conceptually consistent Wrangler, with their solid axles and open top, have been called the Jeep model as central to Jeep's brand identity as the rear-engine 911 is to Porsche.

Similar to the Willys MB and the CJ Jeeps before it, all Wrangler models continue to use a separate body and frame, rigid live axles both front and rear, a tapering nose design with flared fenders, a fold-flat windshield and can be driven without doors. Also, with few exceptions, they have part-time four-wheel drive systems, with the choice of high and low gearing, and standard open bodies with removable hard or soft tops. However, the Wrangler series was specifically redesigned to be safer and more comfortable on-road, to attract more daily drivers, by upgrading its suspension, drivetrain, and interior, compared to the CJ line. The suspension on all Wranglers included trackbars and anti-roll bars, and, from the 1997 TJ onwards, front and rear coil springs instead of the previous leaf springs.

From 2004 on, the Wrangler has been complemented with long-wheelbase versions, called Wrangler Unlimited. 2004-2006 models were longer versions with 2 doors. In 2004 only automatic transmission-equipped “Unlimited” versions were sold. In 2005 both an automatic and manual 6-speed (NSG-370) were offered. Since 2007, the long-wheelbase Wranglers were four-door models, offering over 20 in (508 mm) more room. By mid-2017 the four-door models represented three-quarters of all new Wranglers on the market.

Common 2006 Jeep Wrangler problems

Based on the information provided in the sources, here are the common problems with the 2006 Jeep Wrangler based on complaints from owners:

  1. Death Wobble:
    • The "death wobble" is a term used by Jeep owners to describe violent oscillations in the front axle, causing the vehicle to shake uncontrollably.
    • This issue makes steering difficult and can be dangerous, especially at high speeds.
    • Owners have reported this problem in the 2006 Wrangler, among other model years.
  2. Window Regulator Failure:
    • Many Jeep owners have experienced issues with the window regulator, leading to power windows falling into the door, sometimes while driving.
    • This problem renders the power windows useless and poses a safety hazard.
  3. Fuel Overflow During Refueling:
    • Owners have complained about fuel overflowing from the tank during the refueling process.
    • The fuel system does not respond correctly to the shut-off mechanism, resulting in spills on the ground and the vehicle.
  4. A-Pillar Seal Leaks:
    • The A-pillar seal on both the passenger and driver sides is prone to leaking, allowing water to enter the cab.
    • This issue can lead to water damage inside the vehicle and affect the comfort of the passengers.
  5. Oil Leaks:
    • The Jeep Wrangler 4.0L engine commonly experiences oil leaks from various components such as the timing chain cover, rear main seal, oil pan, and valve cover.
    • These leaks can lead to oil dripping onto the ground, affecting engine performance and potentially causing damage if not addressed.
  6. Pinion Seals and Transfer Case Leaks:
    • Owners have reported leakage issues with the front and rear pinion seals, as well as the transfer case.
    • These leaks can result in fluid loss, affecting the drivability and reliability of the vehicle.
  7. Rear Main Oil Seal Issues:
    • The rear main oil seal, located between the oil pan and the bell housing to the transmission, is prone to leaks.
    • Dirt and debris can enter the seal housing, leading to oil leaks and potential damage to the engine components.

These common problems highlight various issues that owners of the 2006 Jeep Wrangler have faced. It is essential for owners to address these issues promptly to ensure the safety, performance, and longevity of their vehicles.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-22
  • VIN: 1J4FA39S76P
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: The frame of this vehicle has deteriorated to the point of becoming a safety hazard. The frame has rusted through over 50% of the thickness (internally) and has broken through to the outside in several areas around where the suspension and transmission attach. I recognize that this is an older vehicle, but it has larger percentage of rust than other vehicles I have owned and I do not believe it should be this deteriorated. I believe there must have been a manufacturing defect in the design (water/dirt) can get trapped in the frame or the material used was of insufficient corrosion resistance. Component Malfunction: Frame Structural Integrity Safety Risk: Drivetrain/Suspension could detach from vehicle causing safety risk to occupant of vehicle or nearby pedestrians/vehicles/structures. Inspected by dealership: Dealership did not mention it, probably because this is a 'known' issue that they don't have a fix for. (Frame replacement is expensive) Inspected by police: Indiana does not require inspections. (No) Warning Lamps: No. Symptoms appeared in 2020, seem to have accelerated over the last two years/5000 miles.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-12-19
  • VIN: 1J4FA44S16P
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: December 19th, 2022 Gentlemen/Ladies: This vehicle has been operated over five (5) of its sixteen (16) years in East and West Texas, in an extremely high heat and high humidity environment. It has been also in Central Illinois for about 9 years in a similar environment, and it is known to have the Takata air bag initiator units that are prone to an over 50% dangerous explosion failure rate when actuated. Given that this vehicle is soon to be exported to an equally high heat and humidity environment in service, may I ask why haven't you required Chrysler/Jeep to recall and repair the units in question? Given that there are no doubt several million Jeep Wranglers and Wrangler Unlimiteds with these Takata units in them, it is an unconscionable mistake to allow them to continue in daily service in an unrepaired or updated condition. When, not if these units fail, the results can result in serious injuries and deaths.

  • Consequence: IF THIS OCCURS AND THE PARKING BRAKE IS NOT APPLIED, THE VEHICLE MAY ROLL AWAY AND CAUSE A CRASH WITHOUT WARNING.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE TRANSMISSIONS AND INSTALL A BRACKET TO ENSURE THE PARK PAWL ANCHOR SHAFT IS RETAINED IN THE PROPER POSITION. THE RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 28, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT DAIMLERCHRYSLER AT 1-800-853-1403.

Negative 2006 Jeep Wrangler car reviews

  1. Rafael Anderson 2025-01-08

I purchased this vehicle for $8400 just three months ago, and unfortunately had to take it to the dealer for a PCM replacement which cost $1500. Despite the challenge of finding cheaper parts due to them being out of stock or discontinued, I am determined to get the PCM fixed. Once the repair is complete, I plan to sell the vehicle.

  2. Rahul Graham 2024-11-10

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with the vehicle I bought back in August '06. Unfortunately, I've had to take it to the shop 4 times already, for a total of 32 days. I was really excited to finally own this vehicle after wanting one for years, but it's been quite a headache. It's still not fixed and the dealership wants to keep trying to fix the issue, but I'm not sure it will ever be done properly.

  3. Micah Rogahn 2024-08-02

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with the RHD Sport Postal Jeep that I recently purchased. I was really excited to have a reliable vehicle that could handle the demands of my daily mail route. Unfortunately, I noticed some engine noise right away, which turned out to be an issue with the valve lifters. The dealership was able to fix it, but now I'm hearing a loud thunking noise that's a bit concerning. I'm hoping that this isn't a sign of more problems to come. I'm considering getting an extended warranty just in case. Thanks for listening!

  4. Tyree Ankunding 2024-06-09

I always wanted a Jeep Wrangler model for some topless summer fun. I remember test driving the then new Rubicon Model, but it was too rough riding. I waited for the Unlimited version and finally bought the top-of-the-line model with all the options and the automatic transmission. It's cute and all, but I guess the crux of the story is that wanting is often times more pleasurable than having. I'm having a hard time readjusting from a full-size pickup to the small, narrow, cramped, and difficult time getting in and out, especially on long drives. However, DC did a good job on the build-quality, making it very quiet and smooth riding. For those of you who are getting long-in-the-tooth, you may want to rethink it.

I have a 2006 Jeep Wrangler Right Hand drive, which was built and sold exclusively for Mail Delivery to USPS employees. Unfortunately, I have experienced repeated problems with this vehicle starting at 4000 miles. Despite taking it in for repairs, the issues have persisted and have been attributed to the nature of its use as a mail delivery vehicle. I have had to replace my AC control more than 4 times, and my transmission failed less than 1000 miles out of warranty. I had previously asked Chronic to check the transmission on two occasions while it was still under warranty, but they found no issues. Additionally, the molding surrounding my front windshield has been replaced twice, and is currently hanging down due to poor workmanship.

Hey there! I used to own a '97 Wrangler, but this 2006 model is such a vast upgrade, even though it's still very similar. I absolutely love the '06 because it's the last year they stayed true to the design of the Jeep. Driving the Jeep at night during the summer or all the time during the spring is just so much fun! The only problem I've had is that the top was a bit harder to get on than my old Jeep. I used to be able to put my old top on in 5 minutes or less by myself, but now I need a little help to pull the top over. Other than that, I couldn't ask for much more. :)

If you've previously owned a regular Wrangler, you'll be pleasantly surprised by the comfort of this vehicle. The motor is fantastic and it's a great example of a classic, American-made vehicle.

The Wrangler is a unique vehicle that offers a fun and enjoyable driving experience. It has an iconic design and is easy to maneuver, with a perfect blend of technology and simplicity. While some may find the technology unnecessary and annoying, owning a Wrangler will make you appreciate the balance it strikes. However, it's worth noting that the Wrangler's gas mileage is not the best.

Congratulations on your new Rubicon! It sounds like you and your family are having a blast with it. It's great to hear that the extra space is paying off for your kids and dog, even if the MPG decrease was a bit disappointing. Your wife's enthusiasm for the Jeep is infectious, and it's awesome that she took the Jeep 101 course to learn more about it. It's clear that your daughter has great taste in vehicles, and it's wonderful that she plans to own this Jeep when she's older. Overall, it sounds like you made a great choice with this Jeep - it's perfect for off-roading, winter weather, and hunting season. Enjoy your adventures in it!

The Jeep has good power with the 6-speed transmission and gets 18 miles per gallon with a K&N filter system. I recommend opting for the 6-cylinder engine for even more power. I think you'll really enjoy it!
