2017 Jeep Wrangler problems
The Jeep Wrangler is a series of compact and mid-size four-wheel drive off-road SUVs manufactured by Jeep since 1986, and currently in its fourth generation. The Wrangler JL, the most recent generation, was unveiled in late 2017 and is produced at Jeep's Toledo Complex.
The Wrangler is a direct progression from the World War II Jeep, through the CJ (Civilian Jeeps) produced by Willys, Kaiser-Jeep, and American Motors Corporation (AMC) from the mid-1940s through the 1980s. Although neither AMC nor Chrysler (after it purchased AMC in 1987) have claimed that the Wrangler was a direct descendant of the original military model — both the CJ Jeeps and the conceptually consistent Wrangler, with their solid axles and open top, have been called the Jeep model as central to Jeep's brand identity as the rear-engine 911 is to Porsche.
Similar to the Willys MB and the CJ Jeeps before it, all Wrangler models continue to use a separate body and frame, rigid live axles both front and rear, a tapering nose design with flared fenders, a fold-flat windshield and can be driven without doors. Also, with few exceptions, they have part-time four-wheel drive systems, with the choice of high and low gearing, and standard open bodies with removable hard or soft tops. However, the Wrangler series was specifically redesigned to be safer and more comfortable on-road, to attract more daily drivers, by upgrading its suspension, drivetrain, and interior, compared to the CJ line. The suspension on all Wranglers included trackbars and anti-roll bars, and, from the 1997 TJ onwards, front and rear coil springs instead of the previous leaf springs.
From 2004 on, the Wrangler has been complemented with long-wheelbase versions, called Wrangler Unlimited. 2004-2006 models were longer versions with 2 doors. In 2004 only automatic transmission-equipped “Unlimited” versions were sold. In 2005 both an automatic and manual 6-speed (NSG-370) were offered. Since 2007, the long-wheelbase Wranglers were four-door models, offering over 20 in (508 mm) more room. By mid-2017 the four-door models represented three-quarters of all new Wranglers on the market.

Common 2017 Jeep Wrangler problems
The Jeep Wrangler 2017 has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to its ignition switch, death wobble, Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM) failure, and engine popping.
Firstly, the ignition switch is a common problem in the Jeep Wrangler, even in its third generation from 2007-2018. This issue can lead to the vehicle's sudden shutdown while driving, which can be dangerous.
Secondly, the Jeep's Notorious Death Wobble is another common problem in the Jeep Wrangler, particularly in the third generation from 2007-2018. This problem occurs when the steering components become loose or damaged, causing the vehicle to shake violently. The exact cause and solution for this problem have evaded Chrysler for years, making it a persistent issue for Jeep Wrangler owners.
Thirdly, the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM) failure is a common problem in Fiat Chrysler vehicles between 2007 and 2015, including the Jeep Wrangler. This problem can cause power windows to stop working, stalling while moving, and airbags to deploy at random. The TIPM controls low voltage electronics, such as the headlights, starter motor, fuel pump, and throttle control. A module replacement can cost up to $1,200, making it an expensive and dangerous problem if faulty.
Lastly, engine popping is a common problem in the second generation of the Jeep Wrangler (1997-2006). This problem is caused by an unintended combustion of fuel outside the combustion chamber, usually unburned fuel in the exhaust. Gasoline combustion requires precise timing, a good ratio of air to fuel, and a functioning spark plug. If any of these constituents becomes faulty, then backfiring occurs, causing power loss, engine damage, and decreased fuel efficiency. The repair costs vary according to the cause and damage, so it is recommended to get it checked as soon as possible.
In summary, the Jeep Wrangler 2017 has several common problems, primarily related to its ignition switch, death wobble, Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM) failure, and engine popping. These problems can lead to dangerous driving conditions, expensive repairs, and decreased fuel efficiency. Therefore, it is essential to be aware of these common problems and address them promptly to ensure the safety and reliability of the vehicle.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-05
- VIN: 1C4BJWEG0HL
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Brakes keep dragging, getting hot and seizing. I have done four complete brake jobs and the vehicle has only 40,000 miles on it. Most recent time the wheel rim was so hot you couldn’t put your hand on it. Cost so far, over $6,000. Google searches indicate that this is a recurring issue on this model and year.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-08
- VIN: 1C4BJWEG8HL
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: Have the rear axle gears chipping/breaking off. Have mentioned this several times to dealer and they said the noise is normal for Jeeps. Took to independent repair shop and he found the gear issue, and asked me if anyone has worked on this rear end before, which would be no. He stated it looks as if someone has broke the original seal on it. I bought it at Performance CJDR in Delaware Ohio, and I'm wondering if something happened to it before I took ownership of vehicle. In process of repair at Bobbitt's Automotive repair in Lancaster Ohio... On my oil changes, the Rear Differential has always been checked OK... Now that vehicle is out of Power train Warranty this happens... My feeling is that this was always an issue with this vehicle, and was being covered up

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-01
- VIN: 1C4BJWDG5HL
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: The brakes kept grinding and squealing even after we changed them, next the rotors and calipers were done. Then again one by one everything needed to be replaced and still didn't take and we kept smelling burning coming from the tires. We then replaced the master cylinder and the brake lines and still it won't take. I looked it up and there are countless complaints on this and Chrysler/Jeep do nothing about this huge safety risk ! Answers to your questions 1. Braking system as a whole and yes it can't move 2. If you do not have brakes in a vehicle you cannot stop so unsafe for the driver and everyone on the road bc of collision. 3. Yes my mechanic has re done this job multiple times and agrees there is a defect going on, not normal. 4. I did not know I needed my insurance or the police involved, the dealership is a joke. 5. No warning sensors or a heads up, just does it.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-05
- VIN: 1C4BJWEG5HL
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: The oil cooler leaks when cold and the oil runs down the intake valley, down the back of the engine, and onto the exhaust pipe, which makes it a fire hazard. It also causes oil puddles on the ground which is a hazard when the oil drips splatter other vehicles windshields, as well as making areas slippery for walking. The dealer says oil cooler leaks are very common on the Chrysler/Jeep 3.6L engine. I was told by the dealer, when making an appointment for replacement, that they have to change these oil coolers all the time. Thousands of people have this same issue and there are hundreds of aftermarket options. This leak is going to cost me $1,000 to have fixed because they did not engineer it properly.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-06
- VIN: 1C4BJWEGXHL
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Oil cooler housing is made of plastic which melts due to engine heat and the location of the part. It’s a common issue with jeeps and should be recalled as it’s an ongoing know issue with all vehicles with the 3.6 pentastar engine.

- VIN: 1C4BJWDG6HL
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Oil filter housing cracked
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-15
- VIN: 1C4BJWDG0HL
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Vehicle started leaking a substantial amount of oil. I took it to a mechanic to have it diagnosed, they stated that the engine oil cooler filter housing is made of plastic and over time warps and leaks. Apparently this is a major issue and has been noted on MANY dodge/jeep vehicles. Prior to this happening, the check engine light came on, I had it diagnosed and it showed as a cylinder 6 misfire. This could have caused major issues in the future if it had not been caught when it was including damage to the bearings and the cylinders (probably what is causing the misfire now).
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-02
- VIN: 1C4BJWEG0HL
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: Oil filter housing is made of plastic and over time the plastic, exposed to heat cycle and elements from being under the plenum, becomes brittle and cracks. The cracks in the oil filter housing create a susbtantial oil leak that drips engine oil onto the exhaust and is a potential for a fire. If the oil level is not properly maintained it could also create a lack of lubrication on the engine for a potential engine lock up while being driven.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-26
- VIN: 1C4BJWDG0HL
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: When driving at highway speed of appx. 60mph, driver heard a loud pop followed by grinding from under the vehicle. Driver pulled over, and assessed for visible damage, none was seen. A tow truck was called, as the severe grinding sound continued if the vehicle moved at all. It was taken back to the dealership where they discovered that the front driveshaft was completely destroyed. No one was injured, however had this happened during busy traffic it could have caused an incident. The front driveshaft, along with all applicable seals were replaced, at the owners expense as were the towing costs. No cause was found. See also NHTSA ID number: 11156532. My incident was not as severe, however very similar.
SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-07-17
- VIN: 1C4BJWDG1HL
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: Vehicle has severe death wobble that began around teh 90K mile mark. Have spent several thousand dollars replacing front suspension components, shocks, etc...and nothing will correct the issue. When talking to the local dealership, they indicated that they had a fix, but would not guarantee that if I spent XYZ dollars on said fix that the problem would be corrected. There are zero modifications to the suspension and no monster sized tires on this vehicle that would contribute to this. This has been ongoing for 6 months or more. The issue arises at highway speeds, whenever a bump in the road is crossed over. To make the wobble stop involves making a complete stop, which isn't the easiest thing on the interstate with vehicles going past at 70MPH or more...
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-16
- VIN: 1C4HJWFG7HL
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Dear Sir(or Madam), My Driver Side Rear Cailper locked up (AGAIN) and my Rear Brakes, Cailper and Rotors had to be replaced (AGAIN) this is the second time I had this problem since I purchased this Jeep that I had the Cailper locked up. Jeep has a real problem with this happening. The last time this happened I had a warranty this time I don't. The last 3 Wranglers I have purchased had the same problem, if this isn't a safety problem it shoud be. I have not received a Repair Order as of yet but will summit it when I do get it.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-16
- VIN: 1C4BJWDG6HL
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS
- Summary: Clockspring failed. No horn, driver airbag, controls to cycle evic and radio stopped working.
SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-06
- VIN: 1C4BJWDG1HL
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: Severe "death wobble" at speeds over 40MPH occurs at random times, usually at highway speeds. Have replaced steering damper, shocks, upper and lower control arms, front u-joints, etc....and these repairs have only masked the problem. The OEM suspension is completely unmolested...no lifts, etc. Tires were replaced around 55-60K miles with a slightly wider tire. Wobble started around 95-100K miles. Currently around 115K miles on vehicle.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-29

- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked, he became aware of an oil leak underneath the vehicle. The contact stated that the failure had persisted. The dealer was notified of the failure and an appointment was scheduled for a diagnostic test. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 31,000.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-02-08
- VIN: 1C4BJWDG6HL
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: The oil filter housing on this engine is made out of plastic and if you search online you will notice that it has failed for many many people. The housing cracks causing motor oil and coolant to mix and leak. We were fortunate to notice it before our engine seized up, but others have not been as fortunate. I believe this defect should be a recall, but there is no recall on this engine even though many many people have experienced this part failing prematurely. Ours failed when the Jeep was under 80,000 miles.

I have the 2017 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport, and this truck rides nice, the experts say it doesn't , well go test drive one, maybe these are the same experts that said Trump would not win the presidency. Interior is great, everything you could want except a back up camera(sure they will include that in the 2018 version). Engine is strong , seats are comfortable, and remember this is a truck. You want to be different or you can get an SUV that you can't tell one from another - they all look alike. Don't take my word go test drive one, you will be shaking you head at the experts just like me. Still love the truck - today's date is 10/25/17. Today is 10/26/2020, still own my Jeep and it’s been a Great. Did replace my brakes, and had to replace the blend door actuator (heater was blowing cold), also the battery. That’s it in three plus years. All normal repair work except for the actuator. Plan are keeping this for a while . Still have my Wrangler, today’s date is October 27 2021. Still a gem. Replace brakes, tires. Love this truck. God willin’ keep it another five years, and then buy a new one. 04/27/2022, decided to buyout my lease and keep my Jeep. Just love this truck. Thank God no major issues. 10/25/2022, still own my Wrangler- 40,000 miles now, still a gem, Thank god .

This is a great vehicle that holds its value. However, due to its popularity, there may be less room to negotiate the price. The best I could do was $3,600 off MSRP. In the end, I feel that I got a great vehicle at a fair price.

Tough, reliable, and smooth shifting, this vehicle boasts good power and an effective 4-wheel drive system. It's a blast to drive under all conditions, and with multiple roof options, you can customize your ride to your heart's content!

The engine of this vehicle has some known issues, such as random misfires and coolant leaks. However, with proper maintenance and care, these issues can be addressed and resolved. It is important to note that every vehicle may have its own unique set of challenges, and it is up to the owner to ensure that they are addressed promptly. With that said, I am confident that this vehicle can provide reliable transportation for many years to come.

The Jeep Wrangler is a fun vehicle, especially if you enjoy offroading. However, we had some issues with our transmission after taking it offroading frequently. Despite our experience with offroading, we found that the Wrangler is not as reliable as other vehicles we have used. On the positive side, the Wrangler has great styling and is adequate for offroading with some additional equipment. It is also fun to drive, especially in standard mode, and easy to clean. The doors and roof are easy to remove, and the sound system is great. The Jeep community is also a plus. The AC and heating systems are phenomenal, the best we've ever seen in a vehicle. On the downside, the Wrangler is very noisy, bad on fuel, and has limited passenger space. It is also way too expensive for what you're getting. The stereo system is poor, and the ride is uncomfortable. The soft top is of poor quality and will let you down. The power is underwhelming, and the braking distance is not great. You will almost certainly get rained on at some point. The excitement of owning a Wrangler wears off quickly due to its poor quality build, which can leave you feeling ripped off.

I have owned several Jeeps in the past and they have all been excellent. However, this particular Jeep was bought and sold as a right-hand drive commercial vehicle. Despite having to fix several issues myself, such as the clock spring, front wheel assembly, power steering pump, complete air conditioner compressor, water pump, serpentine belt and all the idler pulleys, harmonic balancer, and serpentine belt tensioner, I have found the experience to be quite excessive. The traction control sensor was also completely disabled, which cost $2000 to replace multiple parts of the system. Additionally, the seatbelt and sensor were defective, and the warning light/bell never went off, which was quite frustrating. The airbag recalls were also never fixed. The rocker arm roller bearing was a fatal defect, and the dealership quoted me $3000 to replace all 24 of them. Despite regular oil changes, filter replacements, and tire and brake maintenance every three months, this vehicle has been a disappointment. As someone who has used every make and model of postal vehicle for 30 years, I can confidently say that nothing has broken down this much or this often.

I purchased this 2017 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport S 3.6L V6 Automatic as a Certified Pre-Owned vehicle in June 2020 with only 22k miles on it. Fortunately, we had the MPV CPO warranty and the Fidelity Gold warranty. Although we had some issues with the passenger front door lock actuator and the driver rear brake caliper, which were not covered under warranty, the dealership was able to fix them. Unfortunately, we experienced more problems with the front axle, steering stabilizer, engine overheating, and a failed fuel injector. Despite the dealership's efforts to fix the issues, the Jeep is currently awaiting a new engine. It has been a frustrating experience, but we are grateful for the warranties that have helped us cover the costs. We have decided to trade it in as soon as we get it back and look for a more reliable vehicle. It is important to note that this vehicle is a daily driver for my wife, and we have always followed the owner's manual and had all services performed at Jeep dealerships. We have never taken it off-road or made any modifications to it.
