2000 Jeep Wrangler problems
The Jeep Wrangler is a series of compact and mid-size four-wheel drive off-road SUVs manufactured by Jeep since 1986, and currently in its fourth generation. The Wrangler JL, the most recent generation, was unveiled in late 2017 and is produced at Jeep's Toledo Complex.
The Wrangler is a direct progression from the World War II Jeep, through the CJ (Civilian Jeeps) produced by Willys, Kaiser-Jeep, and American Motors Corporation (AMC) from the mid-1940s through the 1980s. Although neither AMC nor Chrysler (after it purchased AMC in 1987) have claimed that the Wrangler was a direct descendant of the original military model — both the CJ Jeeps and the conceptually consistent Wrangler, with their solid axles and open top, have been called the Jeep model as central to Jeep's brand identity as the rear-engine 911 is to Porsche.
Similar to the Willys MB and the CJ Jeeps before it, all Wrangler models continue to use a separate body and frame, rigid live axles both front and rear, a tapering nose design with flared fenders, a fold-flat windshield and can be driven without doors. Also, with few exceptions, they have part-time four-wheel drive systems, with the choice of high and low gearing, and standard open bodies with removable hard or soft tops. However, the Wrangler series was specifically redesigned to be safer and more comfortable on-road, to attract more daily drivers, by upgrading its suspension, drivetrain, and interior, compared to the CJ line. The suspension on all Wranglers included trackbars and anti-roll bars, and, from the 1997 TJ onwards, front and rear coil springs instead of the previous leaf springs.
From 2004 on, the Wrangler has been complemented with long-wheelbase versions, called Wrangler Unlimited. 2004-2006 models were longer versions with 2 doors. In 2004 only automatic transmission-equipped “Unlimited” versions were sold. In 2005 both an automatic and manual 6-speed (NSG-370) were offered. Since 2007, the long-wheelbase Wranglers were four-door models, offering over 20 in (508 mm) more room. By mid-2017 the four-door models represented three-quarters of all new Wranglers on the market.

Common 2000 Jeep Wrangler problems
The Jeep Wrangler 2000 is known for several common problems that affect its performance and reliability. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues by owners of this car:
- Body Damage: The Jeep Wrangler is designed for off-roading, which means that older models like the 2000 version are more likely to have body damage. However, this does not mean that drivers have to resign themselves to dents and scratches. Raybuck offers a wide selection of repair panels for 1987-1995 Wranglers, which can help keep the car in perfect shape.
- Oil Leaks: Even with good maintenance, vehicles as old as the Jeep Wrangler 2000 are susceptible to oil leaks. There are multiple systems within the Wrangler that can leak oil, including the engine, power steering, transmission, and coolant system. Each system has a different color of fluid that can mix with the leaking oil and help diagnose the problem.
- Ignition Switch Failure: Some cases of a failing ignition switch do not prevent the car from starting or running. Instead, the vehicle may have a lack of power to accessories, or components may continue to receive power even when the key is turned to the off position, causing unexpected battery drainage. Ignition switch failure is relatively cheap to fix, with a full replacement typically costing between $115 and $140.
- Death Wobble: The death wobble is a creative term coined by Jeep owners that describes a situation when the front axle begins violently oscillating, causing the car to shake or wobble in a manner that makes it hard to control. This problem is particularly common in the 2006 Wrangler, with 28 complaints filed to CarComplaints.com.
- Fuel Overflow: Jeep owners have complained about fuel overflowing from the tank during the refueling process, with the fuel system not responding to the shut-off mechanism. This can cause gas to spill out onto the ground, the car, and the driver.
- Window Regulator Failure: Without the window regulator, power windows become useless. Thousands of Jeep owners have reported their windows falling into the door, sometimes at highway speeds.
These are some of the most common problems reported by owners of the Jeep Wrangler 2000. While some of these issues can be expensive to fix, others are relatively cheap and can be done as a DIY project for those familiar with electrical systems. It is essential to keep these problems in mind when purchasing a used Jeep Wrangler 2000 and to budget for potential repairs and maintenance costs.
How many miles will a 2000 Jeep Wrangler last?

SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-04-28
- VIN: 1J4FA59S6YP
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: WE HAVE FOUND THAT AFTER REMOVING THE BOLTS FROM THE CROSS MEMBER UNDER THE JEEP THAT THE HOLES ARE RUSTED OUT. IN FACT THE FRAME ON BOTH SIDES OF OUR JEEP ARE RUSTED THROUGH FROM NOT HAVING ANY DRAIN HOLES FOR THE WATER TO DRAIN OUT.
SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-08-16
- VIN: 1J4FA29P5YP
- Components: SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE
- Summary: FRAME ROTTED FROM THE INSIDE OUT AROUND THE LOWER CONTROL ARMS. THE CHASSIS IS OTHERWISE RUST FREE, BUT IT SPONTANEOUSLY ROTTED FROM THE INSIDE OUT. THE LOWER CONTROL ARM DISCONNECTED WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY, LEAVING THE REAR AXLE FREE FLOATING, UNSTABLE, AND VERY LIKELY TO CAUSE A CRASH. THE FRAME HAS HOLES IN IT THAT LET WATER IN. THERE IS NO DRAINAGE HOLE WHERE THE FRAME GOES FROM FLAT ON THE BOTTOM AND CURVES UP AROUND THE WHEEL WELLS. WATER GETS INTO THE FRAME, SITS THERE, AND ROTS IT FROM THE INSIDE OUT. THERE IS NO WAY TO SEE THIS ROT FROM THE OUTSIDE AND THERE IS NO WAY TO FIX IT WITHOUT CUTTING OPEN THE FRAME AND WELDING IN REPAIRS. IF YOU GOOGLE IMAGE SEARCH "JEEP TJ FRAME ROT" YOU CAN SEE OTHER CASES OF THE FRAME FAILING IN THE EXACT SAME LOCATION. HERE'S A BLOG POST WITH SEVERAL INSTANCES OF IT HTTPS://SARAHSTONESADIE.BLOGSPOT.COM/2019/05/JEEP-TJ-FRAME-RECALL.HTML IF YOU GOOGLE "TJ FRAME CAP" YOU'LL SEE THERE'S AN ENTIRE SUB MARKET OF PRODUCTS SPECIFICALLY MADE TO ADDRESS THIS FAILURE. TOYOTA HAD A FRAME RECALL, WHY CAN'T JEEP? IT'S CLEARLY FAILING IN THE EXACT SAME PLACE AND CAN CAUSE SEVERE SAFETY ISSUES. ATTACHED IS A PICTURE "PRE_ROT" THAT SHOWED IT ABOUT 6 MONTHS(?) BEFORE IT COMPLETELY ROTTED THROUGH. THE OTHER PICTURE IS AFTER IT FAILED WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY. IT WAS A SMALL RUST BUBBLE THAT STARTED FROM THE INSIDE OUT THAT FAIRLY RAPIDLY RESULTED IN COMPLETE STRUCTURAL FAILURE.
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-08-07
- VIN: 1J4FA49S8YP
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: THE FRONT FRAME CAP, OR MOUNTING BRACKET HAS STARTED IS ROTTING AND DETERIORATING. THIS IS A MAJOR CONCERN WHICH HAS COURSES MANY OTHER SEVERE ISSUES. THIS IS A MAJOR SUSPENSION COMPONENT THAT IS ROTTING AWAY.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-08-11
- VIN: 1J4FA49S3YP
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD, SPEED DOESN'T MATTER BC IT HAS HAPPENED AT MULTIPLE SPEEDS, THE SPEEDOMETER AND TACHOMETER WILL DROP TO NOTHING, WHILE THE OTHER GAUGES LIKE GAS, OIL PRESSURE, TEMPERATURE AND SUCH DO NOT HAVE ANY ISSUES AND REMAIN WHERE THEY SHOULD BE! A FEW SECONDS AFTER THE SPEEDOMETER AND TACHOMETER DROP, THE ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON AND THE ODOMETER WILL READ 'NO BUS', A FEW SECONDS TO A MINUTE LATER THE GAUGES WILL RESUME AND THE ENGINE LIGHT AND 'NO BUS' DISAPPEAR! ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF THIS IS THE SPEEDOMETER AND TACHOMETER WILL DROP AND OTHER GAUGES NOT BE AFFECTED LIKE PREVIOUS SCENARIO ONLY WITH THIS ONE THE AIRBAG LIGHT WILL ILLUMINATE, LASTS FOR A BRIEF PERIOD AND THEN GOES BACK TO NORMAL! IT HAPPENS SPORADICALLY, BUT HAVE NOTICED IT HAPPENS MORE ON BUMPY ROADS! NONE OF THIS HAS HAPPENED WHILE THE VEHICLE IS STATIONARY AT IDLE! ALL WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD, VARIOUS SPEEDS, VARIOUS TYPES OF ROADWAYS!
STEERING,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-07-22
- VIN: 1J4FA59S9YP
- Components: STEERING,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: THE FRONT PORTION OF THE FRAME HAS RUSTED FROM THE INSIDE OUT, NEARLY SEVERING THE STEERING GEAR BOX AND FRAME, FROM THE REST OF THE FRAME. IN ADDITION THE FRAME IN THE SAME LOCATION ON THE PASSENGER SIDE WAS ALSO SOFT TO THE POINT THAT I COULD COMPRESS THE FRAME WITH MY BARE HAND. I DISCOVERED THE PROBLEM AFTER INVESTIGATING WHY THE JEEP WAS SUDDENLY DIFFICULT TO KEEP STRAIGHT WITHIN THE TRAVELING LANE OF WASHINGTON STREET. THANKFULLY, I WAS CLOSE TO HOME AND WAS ABLE TO MAKE IT BACK. I WAS QUOTED $2,200 TO FIX BOTH SIDES OF THE FRAME THROUGH A METAL FRABRICATOR, BUT HE SUGGESTED REPLACING THE ENTIRE FRAME, AS THERE WAS FURTHER ROT CLEAR UP TO THE SPRING BUCKETS. ULTIMATELY I'LL BE FORCED TO TAKE A $4,600 LOAN TO REPLACE THE FRAME. JEEP TJ'S ARE KNOWN FOR THEIR FRAME RUST ISSUES, BUT THE FACT THAT THE RUST WAS UNSEEN JUST WEEKS BEFORE THIS INCIDENT, COMBINED WITH A SUDDEN LOSS OF STEERING STABILITY, IS WORTH TAKING NOTE OF CONCERN. TWO YEARS AGO THIS JEEP HAD NO VISIBLE RUST ANYWHERE ON THE BODY OR FRAME. THE STEERING GEAR BOX WAS REPLACED WITHIN THE LAST YEAR, AND AT THAT TIME THERE WERE NO INDICATIONS THAT THE FRAME WAS COMPROMISED.
SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-05-13
- VIN: 1J4FA29P6YP
- Components: SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: 2000 JEEP WRANGLER TJ WITH VISIBLE FRAME RUST IN FRONT OF REAR WHEELS. LACK OF DRAINAGE HOLES ALLOWS WATER TO ENTER THROUGH FACTORY DRILLED FRAME HOLES LOCATED IN FRONT AND REAR WHEEL WELLS AND ACCUMULATE IN THE LOWER PARTS OF THE FRAME. BY THE TIME RUST IS VISIBLE ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE FRAME, THE INSIDE HAS ALREADY BEEN COMPROMISED TO A GREATER DEGREE AS THE RUST PROGRESSES FROM THE INSIDE OUT. AFTER RESEARCHING ONLINE IT SEEMS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS MODEL. THERE ARE READILY AVAILABLE KITS TO REPAIR THESE JEEP FRAMES FROM SEVERAL PRIVATE COMPANIES WHICH ILLUSTRATES THE SEVERITY AND PREVALENCE OF THIS PROBLEM. ALTHOUGH THE PARTS ARE AVAILABLE AND INEXPENSIVE, THE COST OF INSTALLATION AS WITH MOST MAJOR VEHICLE REPAIR, IS DANGEROUS AND REQUIRES WELDING WITH SPECIALIZED EQUIPMENT AND SKILLS. A REPAIR COMPLETED BY AN UNQUALIFIED PERSON MAY RESULT IN A VEHICLE UNSAFE FOR USE ON PUBLIC ROADS. THIS VEHICLE HAS 175000 MILES DRIVEN ENTIRELY (EXCEPT ONE TRIP TO ATLANTA) IN TENNESSEE. THIS VEHICLE HAS BEEN DRIVEN ALMOST ENTIRELY ON PAVED PUBLIC ROADS. *TR
SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-04-20
- VIN: 1J4FA49S8YP
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: MY JEEP HAS 149,000 MILES. I AM ONLY THE SECOND OWNER. ON APRIL 20, 2019 I DROVE MY JEEP WRANGLER TJ SPORT APPROXIMATELY 10 MILES. I PARKED IT AND WENT BACK 5 MINUTES LATER. WHEN I DEPRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL IT WENT TO THE FLOOR. I HAD IT TOWED TO MY MECHANIC. THE MECHANIC TOLD ME THAT THERE WERE THREE RUST HOLES IN THE BRAKE LINES WHICH WERE LEAKING BRAKE FLUID. HE ALSO INFOMRED ME THAT THE FRAME WAS SO RUSTED THAT IT WAS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE AT HIGH SPEEDS. I TOOK IT TO A AUTO FRAME SHOP AND WAS GIVEN AN ESTIMATE OF $6,100.00 TO HAVE THE FRAME REPAIRED. I HAVE RESEARCHED THIS ISSUE AND DISCOVERED THAT THEIR IS A COTTAGE INDUSTRY WHICH HAS SPRUNG UP DUE TO THE MULTIPLE JEEPS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. THEY NOTE IN THEIR ADVERTISING THAT THE CHRYSTLER/JEEP WRANGLER T.J. FRAMES WERE MANUFACTURED WITHOUT DRAIN HOLES. THE FRAMES DO HAVE HOLES ON THEIR SIDES JUST BEHIND AND TIRES. WATER FROM THE TIRES GETS SPLASHED UP INTO THE FRAMES. IF YOU LIVE IN THE NORTHEASTERN UNITED STATES THAT MEANS HIGHLY COROSIVE SALT WATER IS BEING SPLASHED UP INTO THE FRAMES ON THESE JEEPS AND RUSTING THE FRAMES FROM THE INSIDE OUT. I HAVE READ ABOUT MULTIPLE JEEP WRANGLER TJ'S SUFFERING FRAME FAILURES DUE TO THE RUST. I AM SHOCKED THAT CHRYSTLER/JEEP HAS NOT RECALLED THE WRANGLER TJ'S TO INSPECT, REPAIR OR REPLACE THE FRAMES ON THEM. I CANNOT BELIEVE CHRYSTLER/JEEP IS UNAWARE OF THE PROBLEM. TOYATA HAS A SIMILAR PROBLEM WITH THEIR TRUCK FRAMES AND THEY HAVE RECALLED VEHICLES. I CANNOT UNDERSTAND WHY THE NHTSA HAS NOT STEPPED UP AND FORCED CHRYSTLER/JEEP TO RECALL THESE VEHICLES. THE OLDER VEHILES ARE NOT SAFE. IT IS YOUR ETHICAL RESPONSIBILITY TO DO SOMETHING TO PROTECT THE CONSUMERS!
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-03-10
- VIN: 1J4FA49S0YP
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: I BOUGHT MY JEEP IN OCTOBER 2000 AND HAD IT UNDERCOATED AT THE DEALERSHIP BEFORE IT EVER LEFT THE LOT. I HAD TAKEN IT BACK IN MULTIPLE TIMES TO HAVE IT RECOATED AND WHILE THE THE BODY EXPERIENCED SOME RUST DUE TO STONE CHIPS AND AGE THE FRAME STILL LOOKED GOOD UNTIL LAST YEAR WHEN I WENT TO HAVE SOME WORK DONE ON THE JEEP. WHEN LIFTING UP THE JEEP TO WORK ON IT, WE FOUND THAT THE FRAME HAD SOME STRANGE MARKS THAT SEEMED TO BE SHOWING ON THE FRAME. WHEN WE SCRATCHED OFF SOME OF THE UNDERCOATING WE FOUND THAT THE FRAME WAS CRUMBLING FROM THE INSIDE OUT. AFTER LOOKING CLOSER AT THE FRAME WE DISCOVERED THAT DAIMLER CHRYSLER HAD LEFT OPEN HOLES IN THE FRAME INSIDE OF BOTH FRONT AND REAR WHEEL WELLS ON THE SIDE OF THE FRAME NEAR THE TOP OF THE ARC OF THE CURVE IN THE FRAME. THIS MAY HAVE BEEN AN OK DESIGN BUT THEY DID NOT LEAVE ANY DRAIN HOLES IN THE FRAME AT ALL. THIS HAS LEAD TO THE ENTIRE FRAME BEING COMPROMISED WITH NO WAY TO KNOW THAT IT WAS HAPPENING AND NO WAY TO TRY TO PREVENT IT. THIS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AS A FAILURE OF THE FRAME WHILE DRIVING WILL LEAD TO LOSS OF CONTROL AS WELL AS THE RISK OF INJURY OR DEATH.

I hope you're doing well! I noticed that you mentioned how much you love your Jeep and that you've never had any issues with it. That's great to hear!
-
I bought this vehicle brand new in 2000, and I have never regretted trading in my trusty old 88 Toyota Pickup for it. The build quality is perfect, and the ride is even smoother than my truck was. It's also a lot quieter, which is a huge plus. Even in 110 degree weather, the A/C works great! The 4.0 6cyl. is a torque monster, and it loves to move this Jeep up to speed quickly! Off-road, it's simply unbeatable! After 160k miles, the only thing I've had to replace is the water pump. The only minor issues I have with it are the 3 speed auto, which can bog it down going up hills, and a weak sound system.

I really like this car! It's both practical and fun to drive, so I would definitely buy it again.

This car is amazing! It's the first car I've owned for more than 2 years and I'm still loving it. There are so many cool things you can add to it, like bumpers, grille guards, and lightbars. Plus, it's perfect for all seasons - vinyl doesn't get as cold as metal in the winter, and in the summer it's a blast to drive. Although, on humid or rainy days, the A/C is definitely a nice option. Overall, I highly recommend this car!

After many years, I finally bought myself the 4.0L straight 6 cylinder about 2 months ago as my first car. Having owned sports cars and sedans all the time, I thought it was time to have some fun while I still can. I guess I'll keep this vehicle for as long as possible because it's so much fun and incomparable to our SUVs. Even on long distances like Dallas-Miami, it's a lot of fun and the seats are very supportive.

I bought my jeep about six months ago and I absolutely love it! It's so much fun to drive with the top off. The four cylinder is perfect for around town, but it can be a bit slow on the interstate. I'm already thinking about my next jeep and I know it will have a six cylinder. So far, it has been really dependable and great on gas.

Hey there! So, my Jeep is definitely not the best option for someone who needs a daily driver. The gas mileage is not great and the wind noise on the highway can be pretty bad. However, it's a lot of fun to take it to the mountains on the weekends! Overall, I wouldn't necessarily recommend it to a friend, but it's still a great offroad machine. If you're looking for something with good manners, you might want to consider a FourRunner instead.

I absolutely love my 2000 Wrangler in Desert Sand Pearl (like the one shown)! It's the best Jeep design ever, loved by kids from 0 to 100 and up. Jeep really went all out in making the body panels more technological. I do wish it had an all-time 4x4 though, as it tends to spin at rabbit starts on wet roads in 4x2. But overall, it's still the King of the Hill!! Unfortunately, there have been a few issues with the car. The door chipped off on the 11th month and the front rotors had to be replaced at 9K miles. The rear differential broke at 14K and the front wheel joints were worn at 20K. Both front stabilizer bar rods broke apart at 30K, even though I never went offroading. The water pump also gave out at 50K. Despite these issues, I still love my Jeep!

I have had my 2000 Jeep Wrangler for two years and unfortunately, I have had to have the heater switch, rear-end, and radiator repaired or replaced with less than 7000 miles on it. It's been a frustrating experience and I'm disappointed with Chrysler.
