Maserati S.p.A. (Italian: ) is an Italian luxury vehicle manufacturer. Established on 1 December 1914 in Bologna, Italy, the company's headquarters are now in Modena, and its emblem is a trident. The company has been owned by Stellantis since 2021. Maserati was initially associated with Ferrari. In May 2014, due to ambitious plans and product launches, Maserati sold a record of over 3,000 cars in one month. This caused them to increase production of the Quattroporte and Ghibli models. In addition to the Ghibli and Quattroporte, Maserati offers the Maserati GranTurismo and two SUV models, the Maserati Levante (the first ever Maserati SUV) and the Maserati Grecale. Maserati has placed a yearly production output cap at 75,000 vehicles globally.

History

The Maserati brothers

The Maserati brothers, Alfieri (1887–1932), Bindo (1883–1980), Carlo (1881–1910), Ettore (1894–1990), and Ernesto (1898–1975), were all involved with automobiles from the beginning of the 20th century. Alfieri, Bindo, and Ernesto built 2-litre Grand Prix cars for Diatto. In 1926, Diatto suspended the production of race cars, leading to the creation of the first Maserati and the founding of the Maserati marque. One of the first Maseratis, driven by Alfieri, won the 1926 Targa Florio. Maserati began making race cars with 4, 6, 8, and 16 cylinders (two straight-eights mounted parallel to one another).

The trident logo of the Maserati car company, designed by Mario Maserati, is based on the Fountain of Neptune in Bologna's Piazza Maggiore. In 1920, one of the Maserati brothers used this symbol in the logo at the suggestion of family friend Marquis Diego de Sterlich. It was considered particularly appropriate for the sports car company due to the fact that Neptune represents strength and vigour; additionally the statue is a characteristic symbol of the company's original home city.

Alfieri Maserati died in 1932, but three other brothers, Bindo, Ernesto, and Ettore kept the firm going.

Common Maserati problems

Based on the complaints from Maserati owners, here is a list of common problems with Maserati cars:

  • Clutch Problems: Clutch issues are prevalent in Maserati cars, with reports of clutch malfunctions occurring around 13,000 to 30,000 miles. This problem often requires replacing the clutch, which can be a costly repair.
  • Brake Problems: Maseratis, known for their speed, can have brake issues. While the brakes generally function well, some owners have reported the need to refill brake fluid more frequently. Neglecting this maintenance can lead to spongy and unresponsive brakes.
  • Transmission Issues: Owners have experienced difficulties with switching gears, grinding or crunching noises, and slow movement after gearing into Drive in automatic transmissions. These transmission problems can affect the driving experience and may require repairs.
  • Excessive Wear on Wheels and Arches: Damage to the wheels and arches is a common issue in Maserati Ghibli models. Partial disassembly during wheel removal and improper tools can lead to this damage. Using high-quality tools and parts is essential to prevent such issues.
  • Fuel Consumption: While initially fuel-efficient, some Maserati models, like the Ghibli, may experience decreased fuel efficiency over time. Upgrades, such as installing an aftermarket exhaust system, can help improve fuel efficiency.
  • Power Issues: Problems with power can manifest as difficulty shifting gears smoothly or the car not shifting at high RPM. These issues may indicate transmission wear or clutch problems, necessitating replacements for optimal performance.
  • Various Brake Problems: Brake issues can include brakes locking up during use or the pedal sinking lower than usual, indicating potential disc or pad replacements or brake housing damage. Using the correct brake fluid is crucial to prevent such brake problems.

These common problems highlight the importance of regular maintenance and prompt attention to issues to ensure the longevity and performance of Maserati cars.

  • Summary: I’ve owned this car since Jan 2021. Throughout this time the car will show the exact problems mentioned in the Maserati Recall 338. The car will shut off while I’m in traffic, or if I’m slowly going through a yield sign the car will unexpectedly shift into neutral. I’ve tried talking to my local Maserati dealer over the years and all they keep saying is no, you have no open recalls. My car is doing exactly what the recall was for. All I want is a remedy. I’m getting nowhere, they want to charge me $300 to do diagnostics. My car was manufactured 9/2016 which is of the same time of the recalled vehicles. “ Maserati S.p.A. and MNA have determined that a defect that relates to motor vehicle safety exists in model year 2017 Maserati Levante S vehicles and Levante vehicles. Maserati S.p.A. and MNA have determined that the above described vehicles were manufactured with an engine software issue. Specifically, if the vehicle is being operated at speeds of approximately 2 miles per hour (low engine RPM), which can be encountered during heavy stop and go (bumper to bumper) traffic conditions, the transmission may shift into neutral or possibly have an engine shut down condition, thereby increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.” This quote is from your own website, yet I can’t get any remedies from Maserati. This needs to be known that all affected cars were not recalled. THIS HAS BEEN AN ONGOING PROBLEM SINCE IVE OWNED THE CAR. IT STILL HAPPENS TODAY. I’ve nearly been Tboned in traffic because my car switched to neutral. Help. I feel like this is falling on deaf ears. Several of these cars are now coming up for sale on the used car market and people need to know that these cars are dangerous.

  • Summary: While driving at low speeds, under 5mph, the car will shift itself into neutral. This happens while slowing, coasting, or slow accelerations. This has caused an immediate safety issue as you lose control of the car, especially when the shift into neutral is a hard shift. This hard shift will cause you to loose traction on wet, icy, or snowy surfaces. Although this is a known issue for this model and year, the vin for my specific vehicle shows of no recalls yet the problem persists. I am listing a date of yesterday as this is the most recent occurrence, though I have experienced it for the 2 years that I have owned the vehicle and it has been reported to the used dealership that I purchased it from. There is no longer a Maserati dealer or service center in Alaska. I have been in touch with other owners here in Alaska that have experienced the same issue.

  • Summary: When driving on the highway, almost all warning lights came on. I was in the middle lane and decided it best to get off the highway asap. I stepped on the gas as I looked to accelerate when changing lanes. The car did not speed up. I was able to make it off the highway at the next exit. As I was trying to come to a stop at the light, I pressed on the brakes and the car was not slowing down. I had already been decelerating coming up a hill prior to getting off the highway and thankfully the car came to a stop prior to hitting anyone or running through the traffic light at the end of the off ramp. There were no cars around. If there had been, I would have hit them. I had the car towed to the dealership. The towing company was able to reset the warning lights by temporarily disconnecting the battery. Prior to that, I could not take the car out of park. After the reset, the towing company was able to drive it onto the truck. The car had just come back from the dealership after its annual maintenance the day before. The dealer thinks that it may be related to software updates that had been made to the vehicle, but that has not been confirmed. I feel that I am very fortunate to be alive as without the brakes, I was a danger to myself and others. This specific problem has not occurred before.

This is a safety issue. stalling on a major highway can be dangerous. There are 3-4 other cases (online searching) whose same levante 2017 model had the same issue at very low mileages. The engine on that model is faulty and maserati of north america should be held accountable and recall so that it does not become a serious issues with other drivers still on the road. I now have to pay 38k to replace the engine being ordered from Italy. Maserati of north América will not help me with this. They should recall this model to check the defect in their twin turbo engine.
