The Jeep Wrangler is a series of compact and mid-size four-wheel drive off-road SUVs manufactured by Jeep since 1986, and currently in its fourth generation. The Wrangler JL, the most recent generation, was unveiled in late 2017 and is produced at Jeep's Toledo Complex.

The Wrangler is a direct progression from the World War II Jeep, through the CJ (Civilian Jeeps) produced by Willys, Kaiser-Jeep, and American Motors Corporation (AMC) from the mid-1940s through the 1980s. Although neither AMC nor Chrysler (after it purchased AMC in 1987) have claimed that the Wrangler was a direct descendant of the original military model — both the CJ Jeeps and the conceptually consistent Wrangler, with their solid axles and open top, have been called the Jeep model as central to Jeep's brand identity as the rear-engine 911 is to Porsche.

Similar to the Willys MB and the CJ Jeeps before it, all Wrangler models continue to use a separate body and frame, rigid live axles both front and rear, a tapering nose design with flared fenders, a fold-flat windshield and can be driven without doors. Also, with few exceptions, they have part-time four-wheel drive systems, with the choice of high and low gearing, and standard open bodies with removable hard or soft tops. However, the Wrangler series was specifically redesigned to be safer and more comfortable on-road, to attract more daily drivers, by upgrading its suspension, drivetrain, and interior, compared to the CJ line. The suspension on all Wranglers included trackbars and anti-roll bars, and, from the 1997 TJ onwards, front and rear coil springs instead of the previous leaf springs.

From 2004 on, the Wrangler has been complemented with long-wheelbase versions, called Wrangler Unlimited. 2004-2006 models were longer versions with 2 doors. In 2004 only automatic transmission-equipped “Unlimited” versions were sold. In 2005 both an automatic and manual 6-speed (NSG-370) were offered. Since 2007, the long-wheelbase Wranglers were four-door models, offering over 20 in (508 mm) more room. By mid-2017 the four-door models represented three-quarters of all new Wranglers on the market.

Common 2019 Jeep Wrangler problems

The 2019 Jeep Wrangler has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. One of the most widespread issues is related to the steering system, with around 15,000 miles being the average mileage at which these problems occur.

Another common problem reported by 2019 Jeep Wrangler owners is electrical shutdowns within the first 20,000 miles. These issues can often be resolved by updating the powertrain control module software, which is usually provided free of charge by dealerships, although some may charge up to $100 for the service.

In addition to steering and electrical problems, the 2019 Jeep Wrangler has also been reported to have poor quality paint, particularly around the door hinges, where paint tends to bubble and peel due to thinner paint and increased wear and tear. Repainting the damaged areas can cost around $350.

The 2019 Jeep Wrangler has also been subject to six recalls, which is higher than many other SUVs. The most serious recalls cover the front suspension track bar, which can detach, and the rearview camera, as well as the seat belt retractors, which are not as mechanically serious but still need to be addressed.

Despite these common problems, a well-maintained 2019 Jeep Wrangler can last around 250,000 miles, although this is about 50,000 miles less than the top-rated Toyota 4Runner.

In summary, the 2019 Jeep Wrangler has several common problems, including steering system issues, electrical shutdowns, poor quality paint, and numerous recalls. However, with proper maintenance, a 2019 Jeep Wrangler can still provide reliable transportation for many years.

  • VIN: 1C4HJXDN2KW
  • Components: SUSPENSION,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: The car is having electrical issues that the dealer service is unable to diagnose. They have since ordered a part but they are not certain that this will fix the problem. The car has been in service 3 times. Twice for an uncontrollable shaking that comes from no where, this has fixed the problem temporarily, however it continues. If I hit highway speeds the car shakes making it difficult to drive. The electrical issue for lack of a better word causes the car to stop as there is no acceleration at this point, making it difficult and extremely dangerous to drive. I drive an hour and half to work with fear. I don't want to cause an accident nor do I want anyone else getting hurt. The car has had issues since we first bought it. But thought ok, they are trying to fix the issues so have said nothing until now. Now the electrical system fails causing the care to be undrivable. We had to already have it towed to the dealer. Paid for the diagnostic issue which resulted in nothing and paid for a rental car.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-12
  • VIN: 1C4HJXDN8KW
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: I have a 2019 jeep wrangler with under 50,000 miles. The steering damper is defective. I was experiencing what is known as the death wobble. I searched my vin for a recall. No recall is associated with my vin number, although there is a recall for 2019 jeep wranglers. I took my jeep into the dealer to have them inspect. They told me that the steering damper is bad and needs to be replaced. They suggested using an after marker sterling damper because the Oem part is garbage. I paid over $400 to replace the steering damper. I have called and chatted online with Jeep about this concern. Nothing is being done because my vin is not part of the recall even though I had a defective steering damper. The death wobble was getting really bad and I was afraid of getting into an accident. I believe jeep is being reckless and negligent with this lack on action.

Negative 2019 Jeep Wrangler car reviews

  1. Tillman Kessler 2025-02-18

Hey there! I wanted to share my experience with my brand new Jeep Wrangler JL 2-door hard top in ocean blue metallic color. It's a stock vehicle, built in April 2019, and I've already put 250 miles on it. As a Wrangler enthusiast since 2002, I can say that the JL model is a more refined vehicle with a better ride and numerous improvements compared to its predecessor, the JK model. Although it's a bit overpriced, you won't find many competitors that have the appearance and off-road capabilities of the Wrangler. However, I did notice one issue that takes away from the overall experience of owning and driving it. The steering system in the JL Wrangler feels vague and wandering, which is different from my previous Jeeps or any other vehicle I have owned. On the interstate, it can be a bit frightening and requires two-handed control to keep it from wandering into adjacent lanes. I did some research and found that this is a common issue with the 2018 and 2019 Wrangler JL's. Despite this, I still recommend the 2019 Wrangler JL to anyone interested in owning one of these unique vehicles. Thanks for reading! The NHTSA has received over 500 complaints specifically addressing the steering issue in the JL's. Internet forums that specialize in Jeep Wranglers are filled with complaints and lengthy discussions about the steering characteristics in the new Wrangler. However, there are some owners who have not experienced the flaw or have adapted to it, according to what I read online. Even media-based reviewers have given this phenomenon scant notice. Of course, the manufacturer is somewhat quiet about this issue and may not make it right until someone is killed or reviews such as this have a slowing effect on sales. My advice to anyone considering purchasing a new Wrangler JL in any of its configurations would be to carefully test drive the exact one you may buy, both on a narrow two-lane road and on a highway where you can attain speeds over 55 mph. If your prospective new vehicle steers normally for you, go for it. However, if it feels strange, seems to want to wander, or feels like you’re driving in a windstorm, you may want to reconsider, because it may take a long time before FCA acknowledges the problem and fixes it. Update: After putting over 2000 miles on the JL which I reviewed several months ago (see above), I am updating my review. This may only apply to my vehicle and is not intended to negate the thousands of other JL owners' steering complaints. My new 2019 Wrangler JL Sport, when brand new, had terrible steering as I described above; however, that situation has greatly improved without any intervention on my part. Now the Jeep's steering is almost what I would call normal, not quite as good as my 2016 Trailhawk, but so much improved that I now drive the vehicle without finding it necessary to concentrate on keeping the vehicle on track. The Jeep is now actually fun to drive, as any Wrangler owner would hope to be the case.I want to share my experience with the steering system on my Jeep. I want to clarify that I didn't get used to the bad steering or change my driving habits to accommodate it. Instead, the steering system underwent a mechanical change due to use. Unlike what others have noted, the steering on my Jeep was never loose with play. It was always responsive and stayed on track when I released the steering wheel. However, it had a problem where it wouldn't return to center track when the wheel was nudged and then released, as if there was no caster in the alignment. This required constant counter-correction for each correction made on the highway. It's likely that the joints in the steering system, being new and tight, were not allowing the inadequate caster and toe-in specs to overcome this tightness, thus requiring constant driving adjustments. Now, with some limbering up, it almost steers normally. I hope others have experienced the same improvement.

'Check engine' light coming on. After investigating, I discovered that it is caused by overheating of #2 cylinder valve seats, which leads to cylinder head failure due to a design flaw in production. However, Chrysler has issued a service bulletin to cover the fix, which involves an almost complete tear down of the engine to replace the cylinder head. This process requires the vehicle to be in the shop for three days or more. Please be aware that the jeep may not run the same after a cylinder head replacement, but the issue can be resolved. Thank you for your understanding.

I recently purchased a 2019 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon and have driven it for about a week now. While I would love to give it a 5-star review, I have encountered a significant safety issue with the steering that prevents me from recommending the JL. When driving at highway speeds, the vehicle constantly wanders from one side of the lane to the other, making it difficult to keep in my lane. This is a problem that needs to be addressed as it poses a safety risk. I have researched the issue and found that many other JL owners have encountered the same problem. Despite this issue, I still believe that the Jeep is a fantastic machine and I hope that a solution can be found soon. I had purchased the Jeep with the intention of taking trips with my wife and exploring parts of our great nation that we haven't seen before. However, until this issue is resolved, I am hesitant to use it for this purpose. Overall, I hope that Jeep will address this issue and make the necessary adjustments to ensure the safety of its customers.I hope Jeep can come up with a solution so that everyone can fully enjoy what the new Jeep JLs have to offer.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my Jeep that I bought in May 2019 for just under $60K. Unfortunately, in August with just over 2,000 miles, I had to take it in to be repainted because the bright white paint turned yellow due to too much heat from the engine. There are no vents in the hood, which I think is the main issue. Although the dealership did have it repainted and it looks great, I spent $700 on a clear bra right after I bought it and Chrysler does not cover to have it replaced. I think it would be great if Chrysler offered replacement hoods with vents for the bright white jeeps. Now I will have to spend another $1,000 - $1,500 to purchase a hood with vents and have it painted PLUS another $700.00 to have the clear bra put back on. This puts my jeep at about $63k, which is quite a lot. I'm a bit disappointed and I think I should have stayed with Lexus. Thanks for listening to my story!

There have been numerous complaints about the new JLs, including issues with death wobble, bad steering, and bad welds. While there are ongoing investigations and recalls, it is concerning that drivers' lives may be at risk in a car that is priced so high, starting at $32k+. The vehicle is very basic and unreliable, with poor quality and poorly made components. In my opinion, the MSRP should be well under 24k. Unfortunately, the 2019 model has not addressed the same problems that persisted in the 2018 JL. It would be great if the steering could be upgraded and the frames could be properly welded, like other manufacturers. At present, the steering wanders from side to side, and hitting a pothole at over 60mph can cause the whole car to shake out of control. Some of the welds on the frame are incomplete and too shallow, and some are completely separating. It is important that FCA takes these issues seriously and makes positive changes to ensure the safety of their consumers. Positive 2019 Jeep Wrangler car reviews

  1. Delmer Volkman 2025-02-14

I'm so excited to share that my family now has our 3rd Jeep! We've had a Renegade, Compass, and now a 2-door Firecracker Red automatic. While the Renegade turned out to be unreliable, I decided to trade it in for a Wrangler, and I was right to do so. Everything about the Wrangler is different from any other automobile in the world, and that's what makes it so special. Even though it doesn't have all the bells and whistles of a luxury car, it has just the right amount of creature comforts, like heated seats and steering wheel, and a more than adequate entertainment system with Bluetooth connectivity. Plus, the customization options are endless, which makes it even more fun to drive. Even though Jeeps can be expensive, you can modify them for very little money. I removed the rear seat in mine, which makes it feel like a trucklet and provides plenty of space for storage. I drive my Jeep every day, going 30 miles one way for work through rural hilly roads, and it's perfect for the roads in NE PA. When the weather is poor, I feel confident that I can get where I need to go. However, I was disappointed to find that some of the plastic parts are quite cheap and can easily break. I hope that this won't cause any other issues in the future. The V6 engine is quite potent and smooth, but it can be noisy at idle. Overall, I'm thrilled with my Jeep and can't wait to see where it takes me next! Now let's talk about the steering, which has been a hot topic since its debut. I have done extensive research to understand the history and causes of this suspension and steering, and why it feels the way it does. It definitely feels strange, almost dangerous. However, I have not heard of any accidents or deaths caused by this. It just makes me wonder why FCA would choose to leave it that way. There are many types of trucks and 4x4s in this world, and none of them feel this way. That's because they were engineered not to. During my research, I decided to have my wheel alignment checked, which revealed that all 4 wheels were out of spec with only 1800 miles on it. The technician was also very concerned about the amount of play in the steering wheel. Although I did not bother with trying to get the dealership or FCA to take responsibility for this, I did report my findings and alignment data to both. I am now used to the steering and have not found it to be a cause for alarm. Still, it would not surprise me to see a major recall from FCA any day now. On the other hand, I am pleasantly surprised by the MPG, which is better than I expected. The Renegade got around 30mpg with a 4cyl Turbo and 6spd manual, and the Jeep gets me a consistent 23 on winter fuel. It will go up on summer fuel. I have heard of others with much worse numbers, but I think that is because of extreme mods and driving habits. All in all, I am very happy with it. If it remains reliable, it will be an excellent long-term keeper.

Congratulations on your third Jeep! It's great to hear that you were able to order the exact configuration you wanted from the factory. The new style soft top sounds amazing! While you've had a few minor issues with your Jeep, it's great to hear that your dealer was able to quickly and efficiently resolve them. It's clear that you're a big fan of Jeeps and we're glad to hear that you're overall very happy with your purchases. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

I have owned a YJ, TJ, JK and JL over the years. The difference from previous models is worth noting. I have to admit that this is the only unlimited version of the four models, which may have influenced my opinion in terms of ride comfort due to the longer wheelbase. However, let's face it, the JL is now in a different class. It drives better than before yet gives you that same tough as nails go-anywhere feeling we got from the previous models. The JL is much more refined, handles better and my 2.0 turbo is faster, smoother and gets better MPG. The 8-speed transmission is sublimely seamless and the stop-start feature is barely noticeable. The fit and finish on this Jeep is amazing, adorned with premium materials which are hard to find these days in most vehicles. I think the influence of Fiat in this case is a major plus as it gives this American classic a shot of European flair. My only complaint so far is that the 2.0 turbo calls for 91 octane which is hard to find in RI, which forces me to use 93 instead, which is about $3.00 per gallon. This probably negates my fuel savings, but it still hasn't taken the smile off my face from the way this vehicle performs. I've driven it on four-hour highway treks, through snow storms, heavy rain and dirt roads and it feels great in all of these conditions. The four-door version has all of the interior space one could need and more. Jeeps certainly aren't for everyone, as they can be noisy and less controlled than SUV models. However, the JL is less noisy and much more controllable than all of the previous models. I highly recommend buying a JL.

Hey Edmunds, hope you're doing well! Just wanted to give you an update on my 2019 Wrangler. I've been having a blast taking it off-road and cruising on the interstate since I bought it in January. I even had the top and doors off for a couple of months - it was amazing! Although I wouldn't recommend driving without doors at 75 mph, it was still a fun experience. The best part is that my Wrangler has been trouble-free so far and I'm really happy with the 4 cyl turbo and 8 speed auto (even though it was a bit overpriced). The nav system is also pretty impressive and I'm getting better than 22mpg overall. I do have a couple of minor issues, like the rear view mirror visibility and the owner's manual being a bit unclear on some operations, but nothing that would be a deal breaker. I'm thinking of adding foam headliners to make it even better. By the way, have you tried the stop and go traffic feature? It works like a charm! Looking forward to taking it apart again in a couple of weeks. Take care!

We offer a wide range of prices to suit your needs. The Rubicon model provides a more luxurious driving experience, while the Sport S is a more affordable option. We believe that the price difference is justified by the quality of the product.
