2005 Jeep Wrangler problems
The Jeep Wrangler is a series of compact and mid-size four-wheel drive off-road SUVs manufactured by Jeep since 1986, and currently in its fourth generation. The Wrangler JL, the most recent generation, was unveiled in late 2017 and is produced at Jeep's Toledo Complex.
The Wrangler is a direct progression from the World War II Jeep, through the CJ (Civilian Jeeps) produced by Willys, Kaiser-Jeep, and American Motors Corporation (AMC) from the mid-1940s through the 1980s. Although neither AMC nor Chrysler (after it purchased AMC in 1987) have claimed that the Wrangler was a direct descendant of the original military model — both the CJ Jeeps and the conceptually consistent Wrangler, with their solid axles and open top, have been called the Jeep model as central to Jeep's brand identity as the rear-engine 911 is to Porsche.
Similar to the Willys MB and the CJ Jeeps before it, all Wrangler models continue to use a separate body and frame, rigid live axles both front and rear, a tapering nose design with flared fenders, a fold-flat windshield and can be driven without doors. Also, with few exceptions, they have part-time four-wheel drive systems, with the choice of high and low gearing, and standard open bodies with removable hard or soft tops. However, the Wrangler series was specifically redesigned to be safer and more comfortable on-road, to attract more daily drivers, by upgrading its suspension, drivetrain, and interior, compared to the CJ line. The suspension on all Wranglers included trackbars and anti-roll bars, and, from the 1997 TJ onwards, front and rear coil springs instead of the previous leaf springs.
From 2004 on, the Wrangler has been complemented with long-wheelbase versions, called Wrangler Unlimited. 2004-2006 models were longer versions with 2 doors. In 2004 only automatic transmission-equipped “Unlimited” versions were sold. In 2005 both an automatic and manual 6-speed (NSG-370) were offered. Since 2007, the long-wheelbase Wranglers were four-door models, offering over 20 in (508 mm) more room. By mid-2017 the four-door models represented three-quarters of all new Wranglers on the market.

Common 2005 Jeep Wrangler problems
Common Problems with the Jeep Wrangler 2005:
- Automatic Transmission Issues: Since the 2005 Jeep Wrangler, several owners have reported problems with the automatic transmission, including the vehicle getting stuck in one gear, especially at high speeds. The manufacturer acknowledges this issue and has issued recalls, but the fix can take a long time. It may be useful to understand the different types of manual transmissions that don't have this problem.
- Death Wobble: This issue is common in the third generation of Jeep Wrangler, from 2007-2018. Hitting a pothole or braking hard can cause the steering components to become loose or damaged, leading to a violent shaking of the vehicle. The exact cause and solution have evaded Chrysler for years, but if you experience it, it is recommended to stay calm and potentially fix the Jeep's Death Wobble.
- Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM) Failure: This issue affects Fiat Chrysler vehicles between 2007 and 2015, including the Jeep Wrangler. The TIPM is responsible for controlling low voltage electronics, such as the headlights, starter motor, fuel pump, and throttle control. A faulty TIPM can cause power windows to fail, the engine to stall, and airbags to deploy at random. The repair cost can be as high as $1,200.
- Exhaust Manifold Bolt Failure: This issue affects the oldest generation of Wranglers, from 1987-1995. Over time, the manifold may stretch beyond its ability to retract, causing the mounting stud to fracture and the bolts to fail. An exhaust manifold replacement can cost between $950 and $1,100.
- Body Damage: Wranglers are made for off-roading, and older Jeeps are more likely to have body damage. However, Raybuck offers a wide selection of repair panels for 1987-1995 Wranglers to keep your Jeep in perfect shape.
- Oil Leaks: Despite good maintenance, vehicles this old are susceptible to oil leaks. Each system has a different color of fluid that mixes with the leaking oil and can be used to pinpoint the source of the problem.
- PCM Problems: The 2005-2006 TJ Jeep Wrangler models are notorious for having a host of PCM problems, including stalling, misfiring, starting, and performance issues, as well as issues with engine temperature readings and false engine error codes.
- Transmission Recalls: Jeep Wrangler models starting in 2005 are famous for multiple recalls related to the automatic transmission and power train.
- Ignition Switch Issues: If accessories are off or acting erratically, you likely have an ignition switch issue. This problem can cause extensive issues but is relatively cheap to fix, with a full replacement typically costing between $115 and $140.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-10-09
- Number Of Injuries: 2
- VIN: 1J4FA49SX5P
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: At every fuel fill up, gasoline splashes back out onto the vehicle, the person filling the vehicle and creates a very unsafe puddle of gasoline on the ground. There is never a time that it does not happen. I would be readily available to make my vehicle available for inspection of this concern. Chrysler has issued recalls for this exact problem on several of their vehicle models all within the same time period of manufacturing. The fuel tank inlet check valve is a widely known and dangerous issue that should be seriously considered to repair the remaining vehicles on the road with this problem. It has been documented by numerous owners of Jeep Wranglers from 2005-2006 while the same issue forced a recall of the same Jeeps in later model years, 2007-2008. The Jeep has been inspected by a certified mechanic where I was notified of much of this information. With the amount of gasoline that spills out and the motorist re-enters their vehicle, there could be a static charge that could ignite the gasoline and cause extreme personal harm and property damage. There is no indication or warning sign to alert you that it is going to splash out gasoline. I am left to rarely fill my fuel tank to the maximum level to avoid being soaked in gasoline and irritating my skin or worse. I have owned this Jeep for going on 4 years and it has been a concern since day 1. I am noting this report of having been injured but the injuries at this point are only skin irritations as a result of gasoline coming in contact with our skin. I also noted the date as the first time this happened but as mentioned before, it happens or will happen at every fill up.

- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: 005-2006 JEEP WRANGLERS ARE INCURRING AN APPARENT LARGE NUMBER OF PCM/ECU FAILURES (AS EVIDENCED IN MANY ONLINE FORUMS AND A HIGH BACKLOG OF PCM ORDERS WHICH JEEP/CHRYSLER IS UNABLE TO FILL OR PROVIDE AN ETA FOR). THE FAILURE OF THE PCM REVEALS ITSELF IN MANY WAYS INCLUDING EMISSIONS SYSTEM FAILURES (AND RESULTANT VEHICLE INSPECTION FAILURES I WILL ADD), TRANSMISSIONS FAILING TO SHIFT, HARD FORCEFUL TRANSMISSION SHIFTS WITH VEHICLE LUNGES AND MORE. ON MY VEHICLE SPECIFICALLY THE TRANSMISSION CODES ARE COMING ON AND THE VEHICLE WILL RANDOMLY NOT SHIFT OUT OF SECOND GEAR AND RANDOMLY SHIFTS TO NEUTRAL WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS AND PRESENTS ITSELF AS A SAFETY HAZARD WHEN ENTERING HIGH SPEED FREEWAYS AND INTERSTATES. TO THE PCM AND FURTHER ONLINE INVESTIGATION INDICATES THIS A FREQUENT AND RECURRING ISSUE. WHEN I ATTEMPTED TO REPLACE THE PCM THROUGH JEEP/CHRYSLER I AM UNABLE TO BECAUSE THE PART IS BA CKLOGGED. I HAVE PLACED A PRICEY $1600 ORDER FOR THE PART BUT THUS FAR OVER 3 MONTHS MY VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN ABLE TO OBTAIN A WORKING REPLACEMENT PART BASED ON THE LARGE NUMBER AND TYPE OF ISSUES REPORTED ONLINE WITH THIS PCM I AM LEFT WONDERING WHY IT IS NOT A SAFETY, EMISSIONS AND/OR RECALL ISSUE.

I purchased it new. So far, I have done the usual city driving, taken it on a few highway trips, and done some light off-road driving. For its size, there is no vehicle that parks as easily as a Wrangler. It turns sharply, and visibility is excellent. With the hard top on, it is the quietest Wrangler yet on the highway. There is some very minor wind noise and some whine from the knobby off-road tires, but it's still not bad. Off-road, it's a killer! Once the axles are locked, there's nothing that can stop you. The 4.0L puts out so much torque at idle, it's amazing. The solid axles allow the suspension to flex and keep the tires in contact with the ground better than any other factory 4x4 I've seen!
-
I love this thing! I will own it until it dies. The only thing I dislike is the gas mileage, but I thoroughly enjoy the vehicle.
-
You'll love driving this vehicle, it's so much fun! Plus, it's incredibly capable off-road. One of my favourite features is how easy it is to fold the top down. And if you're looking to customize it, there are plenty of great aftermarket accessories available.
-
This has been the most enjoyable car I have ever driven. I love feeling the road underneath me and being in control. While some people may complain about the gas mileage and ride, I think it's important to do your research before making a purchase. But for us Jeepers, those are the very reasons we choose to buy them. It's a Jeep Thing - looking in with envy, and looking out with understanding.
-
This is my first Jeep. I'm so glad to say that I've had it for almost a month now and have close to 1000 miles on it with no problems. I've taken it off road several times already and it has performed well on all counts. Even though I have a stock Wrangler, it still overcomes mud and hills with ease. I must say, it's a relatively comfortable ride.

At 1,700 miles, the oil pressure dropped and the dealer had to special order a new camshaft sensor drive that attaches to the oil pump. Unfortunately, at 3,100 miles, the same problem arose. Despite the difficulty in diagnosing the issue and contacting Chrysler/Jeep, I am confident that we will find a solution. It is important to note that this issue is specific to my 2005 Jeep Wrangler with a 4.0 liter engine.

I recently purchased a 2005 Jeep Wrangler Sport with 4wd and the inline straight six cylinder motor. It looked amazing sitting at the dealership, and I was excited to take it home. However, I found that it wasn't the right fit for me and my family. The fuel economy wasn't great for a small vehicle, and there wasn't enough room for four people or any cargo. Additionally, it was quite loud to drive, and the soft top was noisy. If you plan to drive over 60 mph, be prepared to hear the wind. After four months, I decided to trade it back in. While it wasn't the right vehicle for me, it may work for others who prioritize different features.

This is actually my second Wrangler, as I had a Sahara back in '99. I've noticed that there have been some vast improvements in the sound system since then, and I'm pretty sure that the newer model doesn't have a distributor cap like the '99 did, which seemed kind of archaic. While it's not the most comfortable ride for long trips, it's definitely a lot of fun. I think the under 30 crowd would really enjoy it, and there's nothing quite like driving with the top down on a beautiful day or being able to power through snow like this vehicle can.

This vehicle is designed for off-road use. While it may not provide the smoothest ride on paved roads, it excels in rugged terrain. Although I did experience some minor issues with the dash and weld marks, the dealership assured me that these are within Jeep's standards. Overall, I am satisfied with my purchase and look forward to taking it on more off-road adventures.

I've owned a 97' SE 4 cyl 5 sp, '01 sport 6cyl 5sp, and now I have an 05' Rubicon 6 cyl 6sp. Although I've had some issues with the front end, including 4 sets of sway arm links, 4 steering stabilizers, and 3 axle seal sets, I still love my Rubicon. It's incredibly capable and can take you anywhere you want to go. The soft top can be a bit noisy, but the hardtop makes a big difference. While the mpg isn't great, it's not a major concern for me. I plan on owning another Wrangler, but I think I'll go for an older model. I absolutely loved my 97 (unfortunately, I was in a car accident and had to let it go), and my 2001 caught fire in the garage due to a wiring short. Currently, my lawyer is negotiating with Chrysler regarding my 2005. Overall, I highly recommend the Wrangler to anyone looking for a capable and fun vehicle.
