2013 Jeep Wrangler problems

jeep logo

The Jeep Wrangler is a series of compact and mid-size four-wheel drive off-road SUVs manufactured by Jeep since 1986, and currently in its fourth generation. The Wrangler JL, the most recent generation, was unveiled in late 2017 and is produced at Jeep's Toledo Complex.

The Wrangler is a direct progression from the World War II Jeep, through the CJ (Civilian Jeeps) produced by Willys, Kaiser-Jeep, and American Motors Corporation (AMC) from the mid-1940s through the 1980s. Although neither AMC nor Chrysler (after it purchased AMC in 1987) have claimed that the Wrangler was a direct descendant of the original military model — both the CJ Jeeps and the conceptually consistent Wrangler, with their solid axles and open top, have been called the Jeep model as central to Jeep's brand identity as the rear-engine 911 is to Porsche.

Similar to the Willys MB and the CJ Jeeps before it, all Wrangler models continue to use a separate body and frame, rigid live axles both front and rear, a tapering nose design with flared fenders, a fold-flat windshield and can be driven without doors. Also, with few exceptions, they have part-time four-wheel drive systems, with the choice of high and low gearing, and standard open bodies with removable hard or soft tops. However, the Wrangler series was specifically redesigned to be safer and more comfortable on-road, to attract more daily drivers, by upgrading its suspension, drivetrain, and interior, compared to the CJ line. The suspension on all Wranglers included trackbars and anti-roll bars, and, from the 1997 TJ onwards, front and rear coil springs instead of the previous leaf springs.

From 2004 on, the Wrangler has been complemented with long-wheelbase versions, called Wrangler Unlimited. 2004-2006 models were longer versions with 2 doors. In 2004 only automatic transmission-equipped “Unlimited” versions were sold. In 2005 both an automatic and manual 6-speed (NSG-370) were offered. Since 2007, the long-wheelbase Wranglers were four-door models, offering over 20 in (508 mm) more room. By mid-2017 the four-door models represented three-quarters of all new Wranglers on the market.

Common 2013 Jeep Wrangler problems

The 2013 Jeep Wrangler is known for its dependable off-road capabilities, but owners have reported several common problems. These issues include engine stalling while driving, computer failures, and suspension issues.

  • Computer failures: Computer failures are another serious problem mentioned by owners at around 50,000 miles. The totally integrated power module (TIPM) is a known weak spot across many Chrysler, Jeep, and Dodge models from 2013. Replacing the TIPM is a costly project, which can cost around $1,300.
  • Suspension and steering issues: Suspension and steering issues, known as the "death wobble," are also mentioned at around 30,000 miles. A worn-out steering stabilizer is the most common source of the problem. Changing out the steering stabilizer along with the bushings costs around $650.

In addition to these issues, there are 7 recalls for the 2013 Jeep Wrangler, which is average compared to other midsize SUVs from 2013. The most serious recall is for a transmission fluid leak, which can lead to the transmission failing. Jeep will replace a transmission cooler line for free on affected models.

These common problems with the 2013 Jeep Wrangler can lead to higher repair costs than average midsize SUVs. Therefore, potential buyers should be aware of these issues and consider them when making a purchasing decision.

Negative 2013 Jeep Wrangler car reviews

  1. Lonny Mitchell 2024-09-19

Although the feedback is negative, the writer's experience with the car is valuable. However, it is important to note that this is a personal opinion and may not reflect the experience of others. It is recommended to consider other factors before making a decision on purchasing a Chrysler product.

  2. Harmon Jaskolski 2024-09-12

I recently purchased a 2013 Wrangler Unlimited with 30,000 km on it. Unfortunately, I have experienced some issues with it, and have had to spend quite a bit of money on repairs. Despite this, I still enjoy driving it as it is a lot of fun. However, I do feel that it could have been built to a higher standard.

  3. Monserrate Little 2024-09-01

All of my cars have been manual transmissions, including two trucks and three cars. It was quite a challenge to find a manual transmission, especially for a Jeep. Unfortunately, the electronic hill assist feature in the vehicle can be frustrating for those who are experienced with manual transmissions. Additionally, shifting into reverse can be difficult due to the awkward angle. It seems like this Jeep may have been designed with larger individuals in mind.

  4. Sylvester Walter 2024-08-17

The car has experienced several issues since it was new, including the airbag and check engine lights remaining on, poor fuel economy, a rough ride, and a malfunctioning AC. Despite seeking assistance from the dealer and Jeep, no satisfactory resolution has been reached. Additionally, the CD player has been known to damage CDs. These issues have persisted despite the car having only 50,000 miles on its fourth set of tires.

  5. Ignacio Sanford 2024-07-04

This is my first Jeep and I am thoroughly impressed with it. I have always wanted a Jeep and this one has exceeded my expectations. It is both capable and practical for everyday use, making it a timeless vehicle that stands out whether in a parking lot or on a trailhead. Despite having two young kids and all their stuff, as well as my own, the unlimited version was the perfect choice. Although it may be a little tough for my kids to get in on their own right now, this Jeep can go almost anywhere, which is what I love most about it. This is especially important living in the northeast lake effect snow belt. The unlimited version also has good storage in the rear, and the alpine stereo and uconnect are great features. After owning a Jeep for two years, my opinion has only improved. While Jeep claims this is a capable vehicle, I can attest that it truly is, even in wet conditions. However, I do believe that Jeep should consider using marine grade electronics to avoid any potential electrical issues. Unfortunately, I once left the top down in a downpour and experienced numerous electrical issues afterwards. Despite this setback, I still highly recommend the Jeep and would definitely consider buying another one in the future.

I'm so glad you're enjoying your Jeep! It sounds like you made a great decision with the new V6 and other improvements. Off-roading in the mountains and desert of So Cal must be amazing! It's great to hear that you're getting good gas mileage too, with 17-18 mpg in the city and as much as 23 mpg on the highway at 65 mph. And it's even better to hear that you haven't had any problems or concerns with it yet, even after driving 6K miles. Keep on enjoying your Jeep!

My 13’ Jeep JK Sport has 46k miles on it and is still going strong. It might not be as comfortable as my other half’s Porsche, but when the mountain calls, this baby roars!

I'm so glad to hear that you love your 2013 Wrangler! It sounds like you made a great choice when you purchased it new from the factory. It's always a bit nerve-wracking trying something new, but I'm thrilled to hear that your first time as a Wrangler owner has been such a positive experience. Thanks for sharing!

So far this Jeep has never been worked on. The only times my Wrangler has ever been in a shop were for new tires, a new battery, and oil changes. I'm very pleased with how it's been running! With over 112,000 miles and always using synthetic oil, it runs like a top. I'm extremely satisfied!
