2021 Jeep Wrangler problems

The Jeep Wrangler is a series of compact and mid-size four-wheel drive off-road SUVs manufactured by Jeep since 1986, and currently in its fourth generation. The Wrangler JL, the most recent generation, was unveiled in late 2017 and is produced at Jeep's Toledo Complex.

The Wrangler is a direct progression from the World War II Jeep, through the CJ (Civilian Jeeps) produced by Willys, Kaiser-Jeep, and American Motors Corporation (AMC) from the mid-1940s through the 1980s. Although neither AMC nor Chrysler (after it purchased AMC in 1987) have claimed that the Wrangler was a direct descendant of the original military model — both the CJ Jeeps and the conceptually consistent Wrangler, with their solid axles and open top, have been called the Jeep model as central to Jeep's brand identity as the rear-engine 911 is to Porsche.

Similar to the Willys MB and the CJ Jeeps before it, all Wrangler models continue to use a separate body and frame, rigid live axles both front and rear, a tapering nose design with flared fenders, a fold-flat windshield and can be driven without doors. Also, with few exceptions, they have part-time four-wheel drive systems, with the choice of high and low gearing, and standard open bodies with removable hard or soft tops. However, the Wrangler series was specifically redesigned to be safer and more comfortable on-road, to attract more daily drivers, by upgrading its suspension, drivetrain, and interior, compared to the CJ line. The suspension on all Wranglers included trackbars and anti-roll bars, and, from the 1997 TJ onwards, front and rear coil springs instead of the previous leaf springs.

From 2004 on, the Wrangler has been complemented with long-wheelbase versions, called Wrangler Unlimited. 2004-2006 models were longer versions with 2 doors. In 2004 only automatic transmission-equipped “Unlimited” versions were sold. In 2005 both an automatic and manual 6-speed (NSG-370) were offered. Since 2007, the long-wheelbase Wranglers were four-door models, offering over 20 in (508 mm) more room. By mid-2017 the four-door models represented three-quarters of all new Wranglers on the market.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-26
  • VIN: 1C4JJXP64MW
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: Vehicle stops at low speed and will not move. When placed in park it will not shift back into drive. Hybrid charge lights flashing and several warning lights display on the dash. The dealer is waiting on parts that Jeep says are back ordered indefinitely. Dealership say keep driving it. Jeep is looking for the parts but have not addressed the significant safety risk of shutting down in the roadway and unable to move. I have to shut the vehicle down in the roadway and wait to restart the vehicle to clear the issue. It will not even allow me to pull the emergency transmission release when this condition occurs to move the vehicle out of the roadway.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-15
  • VIN: 1C4JJXP6XMW
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: My 20214XE Hybrid from the day I bought it was often saying "electric not available" There was a potential fire recall last winter that took four months to remedy, during that time we were told not to charge it, park in our garage, park near our home/structures or park by other cars. I purchase a hybrid that I'm not able to use as a hybrid. Finally, got the repair in the spring. Literally, two months later, it starts doing all kinds of dangerous things. I would come to a stop or be in the middle of a turn and would have no power whatsoever, gas pedal to the floor and going nowhere and then would lunge forward. Took to the dealer, computer said CRITICAL hybrid battery overheating, the original repair clearly didn't work. Eventually, it was approved for hybrid battery being replaced. All was well until 2 weeks ago when it got "jeep death wobble", violently shaking back and forth at about 60mph. They did repair it but informed us that there is ANOTHER RISK FOR FIRE RECALL, do not charge it or park in garage, etc. etc. I have a vehicle that is a risk for BURNING MY HOUSE DOWN, this is multiple times and unacceptable. I also purchased a hybrid that I am not able to use as a hybrid.

  • Summary: My instrument cluster went blank while I was driving on several occasions and I felt very unsafe and had to pull over to safety. Once I shut the vehicle off and restarted it the cluster returned to normal condition but then it happened again. I took it to the Jeep service center and they told me there was no recall 30B on my vehicle. Now what should I do?

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-18
  • VIN: 1C4HJXDG1MW
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: Driving on an Interstate Highway in Florida, hit a small "rut" in the roadway at Highway speeds and the front end started shaking "VIOLENTLY" to the point I though the vehicle was going to "Roll Over". I had to slow down, switch from the center lane of a three lane highway crossing over the outside lane then onto the shoulder of the Highway, get the speed down from 70 to 50 mph before the "Violent Shaking" stopped. When speaking with a service center for Jeep I was told this is a "KNOWN ISSUE" with the 2021 Jeep Wrangler but there is no recall for the vehicle year 2021 BUT there were for other vehicle years, which I find UNBELEIVABLE!!!! As a retired Police Officer I will tell you this is a VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION THAT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED IMMEDIATELY OR SOMEONE WILL GET KILLED IN A CRASH!!!

  • Summary: On 9/29/24 with the rear window removed and the top in a closed position while driving highway speeds, the driver side rear window of my vehicle, without warning, flew off and moments later the rear driver side support flew off. The side windows of the vehicle had previously never been removed. It was a shocking experience that left me quite shaken, yet out of control to mitigate. Fortunately, there were no vehicles immediately behind me taking the impact of flying car parts, however, had there been this could have been deadly. The dealership will not be able to fully access the vehicle until 10/16/24. Upon speaking to the service manager they will take a quick look at it today (9/30)

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-26
  • VIN: 1C4JJXP60MW
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: I would like to express a concern with how Jeep is handing the issue with the hybrid batteries in the Wrangler 4XE. I'm connected with the 4XE across the US and Canada and I am seeing issues with how they are addressing the potential for fires in the batteries. In my case, my Jeep was initially part of the B9A recall but was removed from the list. I was on the 04B recall list and had that update performed. A few months later, my battery triggered the P0BBD code that indicated that I needed a new battery. We have seen this trend in the 4XE community where someone who wasn't on the B9A list ended up having a battery issue. Some of these instances include Jeeps that were on the 04B list but had yet to receive that update because Jeep communicated that it was a "defrost" recall without telling customers that they were receiving the same updates that were included in the B9A. So some people are putting off a very important recall because they believe it is just a defrost recall. After I had my battery replaced, the latest 95B recall was issued. My Jeep is on this recall list even though I just had a new battery installed. It would sure seem like the issue with the separators in the battery would have already been known when my new battery was installed. To me, that is an unsafe mishandling of the situation to put a known faulty battery in during a replacement. I do not feel that Jeep is handing these battery issues well and I believe they need some sort of accountability in place to make sure they are truly resolving the issue and not putting band aids on a major issue. We have tracked some data in the 4XE community and are aware that way more batteries were impacted than Jeep announced would be. As well, many batteries have had to be replaced after the recall. This tell me that either Jeep isn't being very forthcoming with the data or they just don't know the correct method for addressing this matter. We need something done before someone gets hurt or killed.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-01
  • VIN: 1C4HJXDN0MW
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: Jeep Death Wobble. While driving at 65 mph on the freeway, I drove over a small bump in the road. My vehicle started to shake uncontrollably. The shaking would not stop until I slowed down to under 30 MPH. This is very unsafe to do while driving on a busy CA freeway. The first time this shaking happened my vehicle had about 26,000 miles. Within the next 1000 miles of driving, the wobble has happened approximately 10 more times, one of which the vehicle went off the road into a ditch. I contacted Jeep and they said they would not fix the problem because the 3-yr/36,000 mile warranty expired. I asked if they were ok with having unsafe vehicles on the road and they said "yes". The front suspension is the system that failed. My safety was at risk when the vehicle was shaiking and went off the road. The safety of other drivers was at risk when I had to slow down to under 30 MPH to get my vehicle to stop shaking. The vehicle was taken to a Jeep dealership for inspection/repair but they would not diagnose the problem without me pre-paying a $250 fee. The vehicle was taken to an independent service center and the problem was confirmed. The vehicle was not inspected byt he manufacturer, police, or insurance. There were no warning lights or symptoms before this problem first appeared.

STEERING,SUSPENSION,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-30
  • VIN: 1C4HJXDN0MW
  • Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Beginning September 30th I experienced the Death Wobble while driving on the highway. It cause violent shaking of my vehicle. It stopped when i slowed to about 50 MPH, each subsequent day after that it would start shaking when i reached a speed of over 60 MPH. It is currently with the dealer to be repaired. Issues include: steering shock has air, also there is an updated longer shoulder bolt that holds the dampner that should fix the steering wheel shake. They also discovered the shock absorbers leak shock oil. In addition, I have had to replace the auxiliary battery placed 2x since I have bought and it is already draining to low levels, which will prevent the electronic system to work less than 1 year after replacing the battery last. These all are defects to the design and should be recalled as they are safety issues.

  • Summary: I plugged in my charger to my Jeep 4xe and I heard a sizzling sound from the wall charger unit and outlet. I immediately disconnected the charger and cut the power to the unit from the breaker box. This was installed in 2021 by a professional electrician. I am grateful I was observant because this would have caused a fire. There was evidence of this starting in the outlet box (black residue). This was. a major near miss safety incident. Hired a professional electrician to repair the charger. The wall charging unit is Jeep branded: HCS-40P Hardwired Electric Vehicle Charging Station, Jeep Branded by Clipper Creek Part number: 0922-00-013 Today there is a note on the MOPAR website: No Longer Stellantis LEV Readiness Compliant Curious...should this unit have been recalled?

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-03
  • VIN: 1C4JJXP6XMW
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: I saw in the news on 9/30/24 that my 2021 Jeep 4XE Wrangler was recalled due to a safety issue (Jeep could catch fire). No information was available that day indicating whether my Jeep was included in the recall. I called my local Jeep dealer and they had no information. I waited for more information to be released on 10/1/24 and saw nothing. I chose to park my Jeep outside and not charge because of what I had heard in the news. I called Mopar on 10/2/24 and was told that the VIN numbers had not been released for the recall but would be released on 10/3/24. I checked my VIN on that day and saw that my vehicle was included in the recall. I called my Jeep service center and was told that they don't have the parts for the recall and they may not be available for months. I asked if I needed to continue to park outside and not charge and was told they don't know anything about that. I called Mopar on 10/4/24 and was told that there is no remedy available and that I do need to park outside and not charge due to fire risk. What if I did not watch the news? What if I did not make these calls? This is safety concern if very alarming to me. I am now stuck with a Jeep that I can no longer charge (which is why I bought it) and I am concerned it could catch on fire and there is no timeline on the fix for this hazardous situation. This is the second recall for a fire hazard for this Jeep. How do I know this time it will be fixed? Thank you for your attention to this frustrating and dangerous situation.

Positive 2021 Jeep Wrangler car reviews

  1. Jamir Hayes 2025-01-09

I feel so lucky to have already received the new 392! It was an incredible experience from start to finish. The first time I heard my new Jeep, I was blown away, and the first time I pressed the pedal, I had an absolute visceral experience. Jeep has truly elevated what was already an amazing vehicle. The old saying of 'there is no replacement for displacement' can easily be applied to this Jeep. My wife and I loved her 2020 Rubicon so much that when the 392 model came out, I just had to have it. If you're on the fence, I highly recommend taking the plunge and buying this Jeep. In my opinion, it's absolutely the best vehicle Jeep has ever produced. The only thing I would change is upgrading the braking to the same level as the engine, but that's a minor issue that wouldn't keep me from buying it.

I ordered this car with the Gorilla Glass windshield back in May. However, I didn't receive it until August 9th due to production of the GG windshield not beginning until mid-July. But let me tell you, it was worth every day of the wait! This car is so well put together, I am honestly shocked that people complain about the quality of this Jeep. I got a 4-door Willys, fully loaded minus the one-touch top; I got the Hard top instead. The Safety and Advanced safety packages are definitely worth the price, especially in urban areas like Miami where the drivers are horrific. Adaptive cruise in constant stop-and-go traffic alleviates so much stress and fatigue. You may not think you need the advanced safety, but when someone with broken taillights during the day slams on the brakes in front of you, the frontal collision warning will save you. This Jeep is so much fun to drive, and the ride quality is surprisingly smooth and taught. Compared to Range Rovers in the family, it is pretty competitive, and that says a lot when it comes to comfort and ability. The 2.0 with 8-speed combo in this is a perfect combination that I wanted to hate but cannot. Obviously, the 2.0 is not going to sound as good as the V6, but the pros of the 2.0 outweigh the sound. I've gotten up to 26mpg on highway driving at Florida highway speeds, which is saying a lot because my Infiniti G35 did not get over 17. I have gone around the car multiple times and pushed almost every single piece, and not a single piece squeaks or rattles. You push on plastics in a Mercedes, Audi, or BMW, and they all squeak, but not here. Who would've thought? Not me haha. If you can get the 8.4I recently got a Jeep and I have already driven it for 2900 miles in less than a month because it's just that great. One of the things I love about it is the visibility on the highway, as I can see above everyone else during rush hour. The only downside is that during severe thunderstorms in Florida, you have to slow down more than a normal car because of its brick-like shape, but it's not a big deal. If you're considering buying a Jeep, I highly recommend it. Although they're not cheap, they hold their value extremely well. I've even received multiple offers for my Jeep over what I paid for it, which is crazy to me. Plus, the Jeep comes with 3 years of free oil changes and tire rotations through Jeep Wave. If you're looking for additional service, many FCA dealers offer 3 full synthetic oil changes and tire rotations for only $100. If you're considering the Bronco, I suggest test driving it, but I personally found the quality of the entire vehicle to be lacking compared to the Jeep. Overall, I'm extremely happy with my purchase and highly recommend the Jeep to anyone in the market for a new vehicle. The plastics in the car were not up to the mark and the overall feel of the car was cheap. The sticker price of the car I drove was 60k due to the Sasquatch package and other features, which I found unacceptable. However, if you are looking for a reliable and adventurous car, I highly recommend a Jeep. It's awesome in every aspect and makes every drive feel like a splash of paradise. Don't forget to wave at other Jeep drivers too! After driving it for over 6 months and 10k miles, I can say that I have loved every single mile. The Advanced Safety Group and Adaptive Cruise features have proven to be very useful, especially during Miami rush hour. The car now gets better MPG in the city than when I first got it. The car is very comfortable and an amazing daily driver. Everything is still solid with no squeaks or rattles. The only issue I have faced is that the brakes aren't as tight as they were when I first got the car, but a quick pedal tighten can fix that. I take the front 2 freedom panels off almost every day and they still seal tight with no whistling or gaps. Everything is wearing well and I am extremely happy with the car. If you are considering options, I suggest getting the upgraded audio because it's amazing, and the navigation that comes with it is also pretty good. The Mud terrain tires on the Willy's package look great but can lose traction a bit more than a normal tire. Both safety groups are a must-have!

This is a vehicle worth waiting for!

  4. Patrick Keebler 2024-10-21

I'm glad to hear that you haven't had any major mechanical issues with your Jeep in the past two years, and that your wife loves it! While it may not be suitable for hardcore off-roading, it's still a capable vehicle. As someone who has owned Jeeps for a long time, I can understand the appeal despite their reputation for being unreliable. I'm happy to hear that your 2021 model has been reliable so far, aside from a slow leaking tire. It's unfortunate that the Rubicon isn't the most comfortable for larger individuals like yourself, but it seems to work well for everyone else. While you may prefer the comfort and all-wheel drive capabilities of your previous Hummer H3, I'm glad to hear that you have no regrets about your Rubicon purchase. I hope you get the chance to take it off-road soon!

Jeeps aren't for everyone, but I absolutely love driving mine every day!
