2002 Jeep Wrangler problems
The Jeep Wrangler is a series of compact and mid-size four-wheel drive off-road SUVs manufactured by Jeep since 1986, and currently in its fourth generation. The Wrangler JL, the most recent generation, was unveiled in late 2017 and is produced at Jeep's Toledo Complex.
The Wrangler is a direct progression from the World War II Jeep, through the CJ (Civilian Jeeps) produced by Willys, Kaiser-Jeep, and American Motors Corporation (AMC) from the mid-1940s through the 1980s. Although neither AMC nor Chrysler (after it purchased AMC in 1987) have claimed that the Wrangler was a direct descendant of the original military model — both the CJ Jeeps and the conceptually consistent Wrangler, with their solid axles and open top, have been called the Jeep model as central to Jeep's brand identity as the rear-engine 911 is to Porsche.
Similar to the Willys MB and the CJ Jeeps before it, all Wrangler models continue to use a separate body and frame, rigid live axles both front and rear, a tapering nose design with flared fenders, a fold-flat windshield and can be driven without doors. Also, with few exceptions, they have part-time four-wheel drive systems, with the choice of high and low gearing, and standard open bodies with removable hard or soft tops. However, the Wrangler series was specifically redesigned to be safer and more comfortable on-road, to attract more daily drivers, by upgrading its suspension, drivetrain, and interior, compared to the CJ line. The suspension on all Wranglers included trackbars and anti-roll bars, and, from the 1997 TJ onwards, front and rear coil springs instead of the previous leaf springs.
From 2004 on, the Wrangler has been complemented with long-wheelbase versions, called Wrangler Unlimited. 2004-2006 models were longer versions with 2 doors. In 2004 only automatic transmission-equipped “Unlimited” versions were sold. In 2005 both an automatic and manual 6-speed (NSG-370) were offered. Since 2007, the long-wheelbase Wranglers were four-door models, offering over 20 in (508 mm) more room. By mid-2017 the four-door models represented three-quarters of all new Wranglers on the market.

Common 2002 Jeep Wrangler problems
The Jeep Wrangler, known for its ruggedness and off-roading capabilities, has had its fair share of issues throughout the years. This article will focus on the 2002 Jeep Wrangler and some of the most common problems reported by owners.
- Axle Leaks: From 2002 to 2006, there were leaks in the axles, which could lead to more significant problems if not addressed promptly.
- Wiring Harness Connections: During this period, wiring harness connections resulted in inaccurate gauge readings, causing frustration for drivers.
- The Death Wobble: This issue affected many Jeep Wrangler models, including the 2002 version. When driving at speeds over 65 MPH, hitting a pothole or bump could cause the steering column to shift out of place, making the steering wheel impossible to move. This resulted in a violent shaking of the vehicle, which could be highly dangerous and lead to costly repairs or serious injury.
- Faulty Electrical Fobs: The electrical fobs in the 2002 Jeep Wrangler tended to wear out quickly or not work, leading to necessary repairs or replacement. In some cases, the automatic start feature would fail, causing frustration for drivers until it was fixed.
These are just a few of the common problems reported by 2002 Jeep Wrangler owners. While the Jeep Wrangler remains a popular choice for off-roading enthusiasts, it is essential to be aware of these potential issues when considering purchasing a used model. Regular maintenance and inspections can help mitigate some of these problems and ensure a safer and more enjoyable driving experience.

SUSPENSION,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-07-13
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 1J4FA39S52P
- Components: SUSPENSION,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: MY 2002 JEEP WRANGLER TJ X, FRAME RAILS ROTTED FROM THE INSIDE OUT ON BOTH THE SIDES AND REAR CURVE UP OF THE FRAME. IT WAS DIFFICULT TO REALIZE THAT IT WAS ROTTING BECAUSE IT ROTTED FROM THE INSIDE OUT. WHILE ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE FRAME LOOKS PERFECTLY FINE AND PAINT WAS STILL WELL COATED, IT WAS ROTTING FROM THE INSIDE. THE PROBLEM DID NOT DISCLOSE ITSELF UNTIL THE BRACKET GOT THE SPRING ARE THE AXLE ATTACHES TO THE FRAME BROKE OFF WHEN THE ROT FROM THE INSIDE MADE IT ALL THE WAY THROUGH. WHEN IT BROKE OFF, IT CAUSED MY VEHICLE TO CRASH. THERE WAS NO FORETELLING THAT THIS WAS GOING TO HAPPEN BECAUSE THE ROT FROM THE INSIDE WAS INVISIBLE AND NOT ABLE TO BE DETECTED. MYSELF I BELIEVE THIS IS A BIG ENOUGH FLAW THAT SHOULD BECOME THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE MANUFACTURER TO REPAIR OR REPLACE. MY JEEP WAS TREATED LIKE MY BABY. I TOOK EXTREMELY WELL GOOD CARE OF THE ENTIRE VEHICLE INSIDE AND OUT. INSPECTING THE FRAME AND BODY EVERY YEAR IN THE SPRING TO MAKE SURE IT ALL PAINT WAS TOUCHED UP AND FRAME PARTS WERE KEPT COATED WITH PAINT. NOWADAYS PRETTY MUCH UNHEARD OF FOR ONLY A 12 YEAR OLD VEHICLE. WHEN PURCHASED BRAND NEW IN 2002 AT A COST OF $21,000, A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF MONEY, BUT ONLY TO LAST FOR 12 YEARS IS A HIGH PRICE TO PAY. I BELIEVE IT'S IN THE BEST INTEREST THAT A RECALL RULING BE MADE FOR ALL 2002 AND OTHER YEARS THAT HAS THE INTERNAL ROTTING OF THE FRAME RAIL. EITHER NEW PATCH FRAME RAILS BE INSTALLED, OR A NOMINAL AMOUNT A MONEY BE COMPENSATED FOR THE COST OF A ENTIRE NEW FRAME, FOR THOSE WISHING TO REPLACE THE FRAME ENTIRELY. I BELIEVE THAT IF THE NHTSA FAILS TO MAKE A RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM, COULD INCUR FUTURE ACCIDENTS THAT COULD RESULT IN INJURY OR EVEN DEATH BECAUSE OF THE INABILITY TO DETECT THE ROTTING OF THE RAIL FROM THE INSIDE.

TIRES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-01-20
- Components: TIRES
- Summary: ON DECEMBER 1, 2017 WALMART INSTALLED 5 NEW GOODYEAR TIRES ON MY WRANGLER. THE FIFTH WAS FOR THE SPARE. THE OLD TIRES HAD TREAD BUT WERE 7 YEARS OLD. I TOW THIS JEEP BEHIND AN RV. I BOUGHT THE TIRES TO AVOID A BLOWOUT WHILE TOWING. ON JANUARY 20 WE STARTED OUR SEASONAL TRIP TO FLORIDA. ABOUT 4:00 PM, THE LEFT FRONT TIRE CAME APART DESTROYING THE FENDER, TURN SIGNAL, SIDE MARKER, BENT FRONT BUMPER, RIPPED THE WIRING FROM THE RV THAT CONTROLS LIGHTS, AS WELL AS THE FRONT JEEP WIRING LEFT SIDE. WHEN I STOPPED, NOTHING BUT A PIECE OF WIRE WAS WRAPPED AROUND THE FRONT RIM. NO RUBBER AND THE ALLOY RIM DAMAGED BEYOND USE. AT THAT POINT I JUST THOUGHT I PICKED UP A NAIL AND GOT A FLAT. THANK GOODNESS I HAD A NEW SPARE WAS MY THOUGHT. THE NEXT DAY, 1/21/18, ABOUT 3:00 PM THE RIGHT REAR TIRE CAME APART AND WHEN I GOT STOPPED THE ONLY THING LEFT WAS ABOUT AN INCH WHERE THE TIRE MEETS THE RIM, 2 RINGS OF RUBBER. I HAD TO HAVE THE JEEP TOWED TO THE NEAREST TIRE CENTER, FIRESTONE COMPLETE AUTO CARE. THERE, I NOTICED THAT THE RIGHT FRONT TIRE HAD SMALL PIECES OF RUBBER MISSING. I REPLACED ALL THE REMAINING GOODYEAR TIRES. I CONTACTED BOTH WALMART AND GOODYEAR. GOODYEAR HAD ME FILL OUT A CLAIM FORM, NUMBER 601521. THEY MADE ARRANGEMENTS TO HAVE THE RIGHT FRONT TIRE AND THE 2 PIECES SHIPPED BACK TO THEM. I RECEIVED A CERTIFIED FORM LETTER STATING THE ONE TIRE HAS NORMAL WEAR (CHUNKS OF RUBBER MISSING IS NORMAL WEAR?) AND MANUFACTURED FINE. I CONTACTED GOODYEAR BY PHONE AND ASKED HOW THAT DETERMINATION CAN BE MADE WHEN TWO NEW TIRES, ONE DAY APART, CAME APART AND A THIRD SHOWING SIGNS OF A PROBLEM. SINCE THEY DONT HAVE A TIRE TO EXAMINE THEY CLAIM THE PROBLEM IS NOT THEIRS. THEY SAID TO SEND PICTURES. THE RESULT WAS THE SAME. I HAVE REQUESTED THAT THE TIRE BE RETURNED TO MY RESIDENCE. I HAVE MORE THAN $4000 DAMAGE TO MY JEEP, AND A MANUFACTURER THATS STANDING IN ANOTHER WORLD. THEY CONVENIENTLY LOST THE TWO RUBBER RINGS, BLAMING IT ON FEDEX.

I WENT TO HAVE TWO NEW TIRES INSTALLED AND WAS TOLD BY THE SHOP THAT THEY COULD NOT JACK OR LIFT THE VEHICLE DUE TO THE RUST. THIS IS PART OF THE FRAME, GOD FORBID IF IT WOULD HAVE FAILED. IT IS SO RUSTED THAT I CAN PUT MY FINGER THROUGH THE FRAME IN SPOTS. I DO NOT USE THE JEEP FOR OFF ROAD ACTIVITIES NOR PARK IT IN THE OCEAN. I ALSO WASH THE ROAD SALT OFF DURING THE WINTER. I HAVE INCLUDED PICTURES OF THE RUSTED PASS SIDE AND THE NOT TOO RUSTED DRIVER SIDE. THIS IS JUST AN AROUND TOWN VEHICLE. THIS IS RIDICULOUS AND JEEP SHOULD BE ASHAMED TO RELEASE A VEHICLE WITH SUCH A DANGEROUS DEFECT. I WONDER IF THIS IS A VEHICLE FROM A FLOOD. FOR THIS AMOUNT OF DETERIORATION, I WOULD NOT DOUBT IT AND I WILL TRY TO FIND OUT. THANKS FOR ANY HELP YOU CAN PROVIDE.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my Jeep that I drove at Camp Jeep 2003 in the Blue Ridge mountains. It's been through all kinds of trails and weather, and I have to say, it's been a great ride! I found that it even handled well in the snow, despite being a lightweight vehicle. If you're thinking of upgrading your Jeep, I highly recommend getting rid of the Goodyear tires and replacing them with 215/75/15 BFG AT KO tires. Since I made the switch, my Jeep has handled even better and I haven't had any issues with slipping in the rain. Another upgrade I recommend is getting a tow hitch and replacing the bumpers. These changes have made a huge difference for me. I'm excited to share that I'm planning to travel south to the Ynes Mountains for Camp Jeep 2005 in California. Oh, and by the way, I did purchase the sliding glass half upper doors from Quadratec. Thanks for listening!

To me, it's important to have a vehicle that will perform in all types of weather, and my Jeep does just that. I love the classic yet practical body style with its strong features. While I have trouble identifying all the new cars on the road today, a Jeep is always recognizable. I'm 62 years old and I absolutely adore my Jeep. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one, unless they make radical changes.

I read another review - a lady said it 'flips' so I got rid of it. Perhaps drivers ed. would be in order, ma'am. Your Jeep is a superior performer - remember what Jeeps are built to do, which is off-road. Your TJ is unmatched in off-road performance and has been totally reliable.

Always wanted one and now I have one. The experience is more fun than I thought. I would get another so I could have one just in case. Don't want everyone having one. Ah, ok... If you test drive one, you'll be hooked. I was torn between a 2002 Camero SS, but I thought this was a refreshing change and it looked and drove a lot more in control. :)

Hey there! I'm currently in Colorado and I have to say, my 2002 Sahara's 3 speed auto does a better job on our inclined roads than I do! Although I'm quite tall, the comfort level is surprisingly good, even though it's not a car. The gas mileage is actually pretty good, considering the heavy transfer case it's always hauling around. The seat comfort and support are excellent, and the fit, finish, and build quality are all very impressive. The only downside is the lousy soft-top, but I usually run around in a safari or bikini top anyway, so it's not a big deal. When the hardtop is on, it's DELUXE. The air/heat is outstanding, and it's no wonder that Mercedes uses the same system. This outstanding vehicle has years of off-road features and refinement in its design. You should definitely consider buying one before the 4.0L is gone!

Congratulations on your purchase of a 2002 X six-cylinder Jeep with an automatic transmission! It sounds like you're having a lot of fun driving it, and it's great to hear that you haven't had any problems with it in the 27,000 miles you've driven. Just a heads up, though - the part-time four-wheel drive is not suitable for use on dry or wet pavement, as it's designed for off-road or snowy conditions only. Additionally, Wranglers tend to depreciate more quickly than other vehicles, so it's worth keeping that in mind. Enjoy your Jeep!

Hi there! This is one of my Play toys, and it does what it needs to do. However, my first new Jeep (CJ-5) that I bought in '79 was even better because of the 304 V-8 power. I'm still getting the same MPG as it did, at about 15-17 mpg.
