2023 Jeep Wrangler problems

The Jeep Wrangler is a series of compact and mid-size four-wheel drive off-road SUVs manufactured by Jeep since 1986, and currently in its fourth generation. The Wrangler JL, the most recent generation, was unveiled in late 2017 and is produced at Jeep's Toledo Complex.

The Wrangler is a direct progression from the World War II Jeep, through the CJ (Civilian Jeeps) produced by Willys, Kaiser-Jeep, and American Motors Corporation (AMC) from the mid-1940s through the 1980s. Although neither AMC nor Chrysler (after it purchased AMC in 1987) have claimed that the Wrangler was a direct descendant of the original military model — both the CJ Jeeps and the conceptually consistent Wrangler, with their solid axles and open top, have been called the Jeep model as central to Jeep's brand identity as the rear-engine 911 is to Porsche.

Similar to the Willys MB and the CJ Jeeps before it, all Wrangler models continue to use a separate body and frame, rigid live axles both front and rear, a tapering nose design with flared fenders, a fold-flat windshield and can be driven without doors. Also, with few exceptions, they have part-time four-wheel drive systems, with the choice of high and low gearing, and standard open bodies with removable hard or soft tops. However, the Wrangler series was specifically redesigned to be safer and more comfortable on-road, to attract more daily drivers, by upgrading its suspension, drivetrain, and interior, compared to the CJ line. The suspension on all Wranglers included trackbars and anti-roll bars, and, from the 1997 TJ onwards, front and rear coil springs instead of the previous leaf springs.

From 2004 on, the Wrangler has been complemented with long-wheelbase versions, called Wrangler Unlimited. 2004-2006 models were longer versions with 2 doors. In 2004 only automatic transmission-equipped “Unlimited” versions were sold. In 2005 both an automatic and manual 6-speed (NSG-370) were offered. Since 2007, the long-wheelbase Wranglers were four-door models, offering over 20 in (508 mm) more room. By mid-2017 the four-door models represented three-quarters of all new Wranglers on the market.

Common 2023 Jeep Wrangler problems

The 2023 Jeep Wrangler has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to its starting and electrical systems, as well as potential issues with its high-voltage battery.

  • Starting issues: Several owners of the 2023 Jeep Wrangler have reported experiencing difficulties with starting their vehicles. In some cases, the vehicle becomes un-startable, with multiple warning lights on the dashboard and 40+ codes indicating a problem. This issue can occur randomly and may be related to communication problems with modules or the battery, although it is not necessarily a battery problem.
  • Electrical system issues: Some owners have reported experiencing electrical system problems, including issues with communication between modules. These problems can result in warning lights and codes on the dashboard, and may require extensive diagnostic work to identify and resolve.
  • High-voltage battery issues: The 2023 Jeep Wrangler 4xe, which is a plug-in hybrid version of the Wrangler, has been recalled due to a potential fire risk related to its high-voltage battery. The recall affects 2021 to 2023 models, and is related to a fault in the high-voltage battery that can cause a fire, even if the vehicle is turned off. Owners of affected vehicles are advised to park outside and not to charge their vehicles until the issue is resolved.

It is unclear at this time whether these issues are specific to the 2023 model year or are more widespread across the Jeep Wrangler lineup. However, the Consumer Reports reliability data suggests that the 2024 Jeep Wrangler is expected to be less reliable than the average new car, based on data from 2021, 2022, and 2023 models.

If you are experiencing any of these issues with your 2023 Jeep Wrangler, it is recommended that you contact your dealership or Jeep customer service for assistance. You may also want to look into your state's lemon law as a backup, as these laws can provide recourse for owners who have experienced repeated issues with their vehicles.

  • VIN: 1C4JJXP68PW
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: I am writing to express my serious concern regarding the unresolved safety recall 95B affecting my Jeep Wrangler. As a parent, my children’s safety is my utmost priority, and knowing that the battery—a component at risk due to this recall—is positioned directly under their seats has made me extremely uneasy. I no longer feel confident or safe driving this vehicle with them inside. Despite the recall, I have been informed there is currently no remedy available. This lack of a solution leaves me without a secure vehicle and heightens my concerns over the risks associated with continuing to drive it. Additionally, my request for a buyback has been denied, which is disheartening given the absence of an available remedy and the potential safety hazards involved. I am seeking immediate assistance and a resolution that prioritizes the safety of my family.

  • Summary: My vehicle was impacted by NHTSA Recall 24V-720. FCA has done nothing to fix the problem and has no forecast for the parts or repairs. Meanwhile, I cannot charge my $60K vehicle, or park it at my house. I have been trying to reach FCA for 3 days now and nobody answers their phone calls either. This is the worst customer service on a safety issue that I have ever seen. I know most Jeep owners are just continuing to drive and charge their Jeeps because otherwise, you have no vehicle.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-03
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: 1C4JJXP66PW
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: [XXX] [XXX] [XXX] [XXX] Oct 21 2014 National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) 1200 New Jersey Avenue, SE West Building Washington, DC 20590 Subject: Urgent Safety Concern and Financial Loss Related to 2023 Jeep Wrangler Sahara 4xe – VIN: [XXX] ] Dear NHTSA, I am writing to formally report a significant safety concern and financial hardship I have experienced as a result of owning a 2023 Jeep Wrangler Sahara 4xe, VIN: [XXX] ]. On [XXX], while the vehicle was charging at [XXX], it caught fire. The vehicle had no pending services or recalls at the time of the incident. To my further dismay, in October 2024, Jeep issued a global recall for this model, citing battery issues. This only confirms my suspicion that the fire in my vehicle was the result of a manufacturing defect. Given the timing of the recall, I believe my incident is directly related to this defect, and the issue raises significant safety concerns. The total cost of my vehicle was approximately $78,454, and I have only driven it for about 15,000 miles. After filing an insurance claim, I was offered $45,215, which does not adequately cover the financial loss I have incurred. This leaves me at a significant financial deficit. Additionally, I have been renting a car for the last six weeks due to this incident, which has further cost me approximately $36,000. I have contacted Jeep’s customer support and created a case (number: [XXX]), but despite my efforts, I have yet to receive any meaningful response or resolution from Jeep. This situation has caused not only significant financial strain but also immense mental stress. I urge the NHTSA to investigate this issue thoroughly and ensure that Jeep takes responsibility for their defective vehicles. I am seeking compensation that appropriately reflects the financial losses I have suffered, ideally in the form of either a replacement INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-18
  • VIN: 1C4JJXP6XPW
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: The High Voltage battery pack in my vehicle may have been built with cells that are susceptible to separator damage. Separator damage, combined with other complex interactions within the cells, may lead to a vehicle fire. A vehicle fire can result in increased risk of occupant injury and/or injury to persons outside the vehicle, as well as property damage. Vehicle risk is reduced when the battery charge level is depleted. Accordingly, owners are advised to refrain from recharging. Out of an abundance of caution, FCA US is also advising owners of these vehicles to park away from structures or other vehicles until the remedy is obtained. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. There is an open recall on the defect, however there is no remedy currently available. Due to the severity of the defect and the inability to use the vehicle as intended, including safely parking the vehicle or recharge the plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, I believe the terms of my lease agreement have been breached by Chrysler and I wish to return the vehicle and terminate the lease without penalty.

  • Summary: The dealership states there are NO active recalls on the vehicle. I’ve taken it in multiple times for the same complaints but they always say they “cannot reproduce” the issue and brush me off. This vehicle seems to have something wrong with the transmission and is often jumpy during acceleration and often times struggles with the braking process. It almost seems like it’s getting a burst of acceleration that I have to fight against while braking. It has been quite scary at times. I have stopped charging the vehicle bc the charger gets incredibly hot near the handle, even when I use public chargers. One time the vehicle died while I was driving at approximately 55 miles per hour. The dealership stated it was bc I was “low on gas” and blew it off as user error.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-22
  • VIN: 1C4JJXR6XPW
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: On July 15th , July 30th and August 11th 2024 the gas pedal on my less than 2 month old Jeep Wrangler 4xE did respond / engage while driving and pressing on the pedal. It felt like the car was dying. This happened at three different speeds, 65mph on the highway, 30mph on a side road and around 40mph on a state road. In addition to the gas pedal not working/ vehicle not moving forward the vehicle also seemed to slow it self down, like i was breaking however i was not and as the vehicle slowed down it was shaking vigorously all 3 times. This is incredibly dangerous and unsafe. I contacted over 20 jeep dealerships and jeep corporate before I was able to get an appointment - this vehicle was looked at by a dealership and I have been told they 'have no codes' and 'everything is fine' In addition to the loss of power, gas failure, non responsive gas pedal I have counted over 10 incidences where this vehicle has a delay in acceleration of 3 - 8 seconds before lurching and jerking forward at various speeds, some of the times vehicle has also shaked other times the jerking is so severe if feels like you've been rear ended. Jeep is not taking these concerns seriously, I am reporting in hopes that you will and maybe others have reported similar issues and we can get some answers and repairs figured out as this car is unsafe and I do not want me or my children to be a statistic of a horrible accident that should have been a recall / fix issued by jeep.

Negative 2023 Jeep Wrangler car reviews

  1. Blake Effertz 2024-10-21

Although the product is unique and fun, it may have some issues with fit and finish, as well as reliability. Additionally, some customers have reported paint defects. We understand that dealing with these issues can be frustrating, and we apologize for any inconvenience caused. We are committed to improving our products and services, and we appreciate your feedback.

  2. Celestino Kilback 2024-07-08

In my experience, Jeep has not met my expectations in terms of reliability, fuel efficiency, ride comfort, modern features, and build quality. I recommend exploring other options in the market that are more reliable and better-built.

Positive 2023 Jeep Wrangler car reviews

The car may feel a little jerky at first, but don't worry, you'll get used to it the more you drive. I highly recommend getting windshield insurance/coverage.

  2. Maximillian Bergstrom 2024-11-01

    I highly recommend!

  3. Ethan Pagac 2024-10-18

It's great to have so many options to choose from! We were able to find a Jeep that had almost every feature we wanted, and even though it didn't have steps, we were able to easily add them on afterwards. Some of the other options, like seat warmers and an upgraded stereo system, would have been more difficult to add later, but we're still very happy with our Jeep!

  4. Benedict Pfeffer 2024-10-02

I learned to drive in a 1954 CJ-3B on our farm. Our little red jeep weighed only 2200 lbs and had only the bare essentials. It had a simple 6volt electrical system that lit the way. Most of its features were mechanical except for the lights. With 72 Hp, it whisked you along. Recently, I bought the bright yellow 2021 80th edition Wrangler to have a vehicle to pull behind our RV. I quickly found out that it was not like my father's jeep. Now weighing about 4000lbs, my jeep is fully loaded with all the tech that we have come to expect in a modern car like Apple play, adaptive cruise control, backup camera and all the rest. With a blast furnace heater, heated steering wheel and seats, it could easily serve as a year-round daily driver. The heat features were probably designed to work on an open topless jeep because they really produce heat. Off the road, the jeep is, well, a jeep. The unstoppable go-anywhere vehicle that earned Jeep its reputation. It's comfortable enough to cruise on the highway, but it's really at home off the road. You have to be careful on the road at higher speeds because it is a high vehicle with an off-the-road suspension that can be a challenge to handle. I don't recommend it for drivers who don't pay 100% attention 100% of the time. That said, it's fun to drive. I like the 2L turbo. It has good low-end torque and revs up quickly. It has plenty of grunt when needed. In 6500 miles of driving, I have had zero defects and no repairs needed. If you know what you're getting into, a jeep can open up a whole new world of joy. No, it's nothing like that CJ-3B, but true to the name, it rules off the road and adds a very modern high-tech road vehicle to the mix.

This is my third Jeep and I decided to go with a Jeep Rubicon Xtreme Recon. It's been amazing so far!
