2003 Jeep Wrangler problems

jeep logo

The Jeep Wrangler is a series of compact and mid-size four-wheel drive off-road SUVs manufactured by Jeep since 1986, and currently in its fourth generation. The Wrangler JL, the most recent generation, was unveiled in late 2017 and is produced at Jeep's Toledo Complex.

The Wrangler is a direct progression from the World War II Jeep, through the CJ (Civilian Jeeps) produced by Willys, Kaiser-Jeep, and American Motors Corporation (AMC) from the mid-1940s through the 1980s. Although neither AMC nor Chrysler (after it purchased AMC in 1987) have claimed that the Wrangler was a direct descendant of the original military model — both the CJ Jeeps and the conceptually consistent Wrangler, with their solid axles and open top, have been called the Jeep model as central to Jeep's brand identity as the rear-engine 911 is to Porsche.

Similar to the Willys MB and the CJ Jeeps before it, all Wrangler models continue to use a separate body and frame, rigid live axles both front and rear, a tapering nose design with flared fenders, a fold-flat windshield and can be driven without doors. Also, with few exceptions, they have part-time four-wheel drive systems, with the choice of high and low gearing, and standard open bodies with removable hard or soft tops. However, the Wrangler series was specifically redesigned to be safer and more comfortable on-road, to attract more daily drivers, by upgrading its suspension, drivetrain, and interior, compared to the CJ line. The suspension on all Wranglers included trackbars and anti-roll bars, and, from the 1997 TJ onwards, front and rear coil springs instead of the previous leaf springs.

From 2004 on, the Wrangler has been complemented with long-wheelbase versions, called Wrangler Unlimited. 2004-2006 models were longer versions with 2 doors. In 2004 only automatic transmission-equipped “Unlimited” versions were sold. In 2005 both an automatic and manual 6-speed (NSG-370) were offered. Since 2007, the long-wheelbase Wranglers were four-door models, offering over 20 in (508 mm) more room. By mid-2017 the four-door models represented three-quarters of all new Wranglers on the market.

Common 2003 Jeep Wrangler problems

The Jeep Wrangler 2003 is known for several common problems that have been reported by its owners. One of the most prevalent issues is engine popping, which is a burbling or loud gunshot-like sound from the exhaust caused by unintended combustion of fuel outside the combustion chamber. This problem is more common in the second generation of the Jeep Wrangler (1997-2006) and can lead to power loss, engine damage, and decreased fuel efficiency.

Another common problem with the Jeep Wrangler 2003 is automatic transmission issues. Since the 2005 model, several owners have noticed problems with the automatic transmission, including the vehicle getting stuck in one gear. This problem can be particularly dangerous at high speeds and has led to several recalls by the manufacturer.

The Jeep Wrangler 2003 is also known for its notorious death wobble, which can be caused by hitting a pothole or braking very hard. This problem is due to loose or damaged steering components, including ball joints, knuckles, stabilizers, control rods, and suspension bushings. The exact cause and solution of this problem have evaded Chrysler for years, making it a significant concern for Jeep Wrangler owners.

The Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM) is another common problem area in the Jeep Wrangler 2003. This module is responsible for controlling low voltage electronics, including the headlights, starter motor, fuel pump, and throttle control. Fiat Chrysler vehicles between 2007 and 2015, including the Jeep Wrangler 2003, are known for issues with the TIPM, including power windows cranking but no engine starts, stalling while moving, and airbags deploying at random. These problems can be expensive to fix, with module replacement costing up to $1,200.

Ignition switch issues are also common in the Jeep Wrangler 2003. A failing ignition switch can cause a lack of power to accessories or unexpected battery drainage. Although this problem is relatively cheap to fix, it can cause extensive issues if not addressed promptly.

Exhaust manifold bolt failure is another common problem in the Jeep Wrangler 2003. The manifold is constantly shrinking and expanding, which can fracture the mounting stud and make the manifold permanently misshapen. This process also stretches the bolts, creating enough tension for them to fail. An exhaust manifold replacement can cost between $950 and $1,100.

Body damage is also a common problem in the Jeep Wrangler 2003, particularly in older models used for off-roading. Raybuck offers a wide selection of repair panels for 1987-1995 Wranglers so that owners can keep their Jeeps in perfect shape.

Oil leaks are another common problem in the Jeep Wrangler 2003, particularly in older models. There are multiple systems within a Wrangler that can leak oil, including the engine, power steering, transmission, and engine coolant. Each system has a different color of fluid that will mix with the leaking oil and can be used to pinpoint the source of the problem.

In summary, the Jeep Wrangler 2003 is known for several common problems, including engine popping, automatic transmission issues, death wobble, TIPM failure, ignition switch issues, exhaust manifold bolt failure, body damage, and oil leaks. Owners of this model should be aware of these issues and take prompt action to address them to ensure the safe and reliable operation of their vehicles.

  • Summary: AIRBAG COVER PLASTIC ON STEERING WHEEL WAS BREAKING DOWN. THE PLASTIC BECAME VERY STICKY, AS IF SOMEONE POURED A SODA ON IT. IT WOULD NOT CLEAN OFF WITH CLEANERS OR PLASTIC PRESERVERS. I WAS NOT CONFIDENT IT WOULD WORK AS DESIGNED IF AIRBAG DEPLOYED SO I BOUGHT NEW AIRBAG UNIT FOR THE STEERING WHEEL. PARKING BRAKE WILL NOT HOLD VEHICLE ON MINOR GRADE. IT ALWAYS WORKED UNTIL THE LAST 2-3 YEARS. I HAVE HAD IT ADJUSTED, THE CABLES REPLACED, AND THE BRAKE PADS REPLACED. IT DOES NOT MATTER WHETHER MY BRAKE PADS ARE NEW OR OLD. IF I DO NOT PARK THE VEHICLE WITH THE MANUAL TRANSMISSION IN GEAR, IT WILL MOVE ON ITS OWN, OR IF IT DOES NOT ROLL BACKWARDS, IT WILL, IF ANY LIGHT FORCE IS APPLIED TO IT. I HAD TO INSTALL INSTALL A HYDRAULIC BRAKE LINE LOCK ON THE REAR BRAKES TO MAKE SURE MY VEHICLE WILL NOT MOVE ON A GRADE I KNOW IT IS AN 'OLD' VEHICLE, BUT I LIKE IT A LOT, IT IS WELL MAINTAINED AND LOOKS NEW. IT IS MECHANICALLY SIMPLE TO AND INEXPENSIVE TO MAINTAIN. HOWEVER I SHOULD NOT BE HAVING TO BUY THINGS LIKE AIRBAGS WHO'S PLASTIC DEGRADES. I AND MY MECHANIC HAVE NO IDEA WHY THE PARKING BRAKE STOPPED WORKING AS IT HAD BEFORE. HE IS A MASTER MECHANIC AND AN EXPERT MACHINIST.

TOOK IT TO THE SHOP ONCE THEY SAID THEY FIXED IT, DID IT AGAIN AND I TOOK IT A SECOND TIME, THEY CHARGE ME FOR NEW IGNITION SWITCH AND SAID MY KEYS WERE TO HEAVY CAUSING WEAR TEAR. STEERING,SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2011-08-02
  • Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION
  • Summary: WHEN THE JEEP IS IN THE 40 TO 50 MPH RANGE, A "DEATH WOBBLE" HAPPENS. SOMETIMES BY ITSELF AND SOMETIMES WHEN I HIT A POTHOLE OR STREET PATCH. I HAVE HAD AUTO PROFESSIONALS LOOK AT THE CAR AND THEY CANNOT FIGURE OUT WHAT THE PROBLEM IS. MOST OF THE TIME THE SOLUTION IS TO FIX A SYMPTOM BUT NOT THE ACTUAL CAUSE. WHEN THIS HAPPENS THE BRAKES MUST IMMEDIATELY APPLIED HARD WHICH HAS CAUSE NEAR REAR END COLLISIONS. IF AUTO PROFESSIONALS CANNOT FIND THE CAUSE THEN THIS IS NOT A MAINTENANCE ISSUE. THIS IS A DESIGN FLAW. THIS IS NOT A REMOTE ISSUE. IF YOU GOOGLE DEATH WOBBLE WRANGLER IT WILL RETURN OVER 110,000 HITS! *TR

I've been dreaming of owning a Jeep Wrangler for a while now, and I finally bought a used 2003 model. Unfortunately, after driving it for around 20,000 miles, I've started experiencing the infamous 'Death Wobble.' If you're a Jeep owner, you've probably experienced this issue before. It's a bit frustrating, and from what I've read, there's no real cure for it. Despite this setback, I'm determined to fix the issue so that I can sell the rig. Overall, while I've had some trouble with my Jeep, I still think it's a great vehicle for those who love adventure and the outdoors.

Congratulations on your new car! It sounds like you were really enjoying the drive home. However, you noticed a few issues with the car, such as a loose piece of plastic and a rusty differential axle. You called the dealership and they were able to assist you in returning the car and getting back into your old one. Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

Great Vehicle... When you need to pass on the highway, make sure to give it a good punch, otherwise you won't get much of a response. The engine tends to be weakest between 1200 and 1900 RPM's...

I've always wanted a Wrangler, but I never purchased one because I didn't feel it was appropriate for a long work commute every day. Now that I have a company car, I went and bought one. I love it!

I had my jeep for two months but unfortunately had to trade it in due to an accident caused by the wet roads. I believe that if I had been driving a car, it would have stopped in time. Additionally, it was challenging to see other vehicles when changing lanes and merging into traffic. On the bright side, it was an enjoyable car to drive and had excellent air conditioning that cooled down quickly.

Positive 2003 Jeep Wrangler car reviews

This Jeep Wrangler is a significant upgrade from your son's California college vehicle that he bought to drive the girls around in. It has an improved ride, an easier top, and all the safety features of a regular sedan. It still goes through flooded roads and across fields with the ease of the bigger monsters we hear so much about. Fuel economy is decent. I love the fact that the back seat folds forward to make the mini truck I wanted when I removed the seat from my old Wrangler. Now, as I approach my 60th birthday, I have the best of both worlds. Best regards, the Blonde Supercharged Outdoors Woman.

The best vehicle you've ever owned! :)

Hey there! Have you seen the 2003 X? It's not your momma's station wagon! As a former owner of a 74 CJ 5, I can tell you that the ride quality is so much better. Although, you might still feel a bump or two. The stock off-road ability is pretty good and the steering is crisp and tight. Overall, it's just a really fun car to drive!

Hi there! I loved reading about your '97 Wrangler Sport! It's amazing that you've had it since January '98 and have already gone over 100k miles! What's even more impressive is that you haven't had any problems with it since the day you brought it home. The body of your Jeep is built tough and can overcome any obstacle, which is so cool! I'm so glad that your Jeep saved your life during that nasty hit and run accident in April '03. It's a testament to how well-built and reliable Jeeps are. Thanks for sharing your story, Kim H. from Houston, TX!

Your Jeep sounds amazing! It's great to hear that you love driving it and that it feels just right. Taking it out for a spin on the trails must have been so much fun, especially with those bigger tires. It's impressive how easily it handled the obstacles. And it's good to know that it can handle any weather, from the harsh winter to the hot summer. Thanks for sharing your experience!
