2014 Jeep Wrangler problems

The Jeep Wrangler is a series of compact and mid-size four-wheel drive off-road SUVs manufactured by Jeep since 1986, and currently in its fourth generation. The Wrangler JL, the most recent generation, was unveiled in late 2017 and is produced at Jeep's Toledo Complex.

The Wrangler is a direct progression from the World War II Jeep, through the CJ (Civilian Jeeps) produced by Willys, Kaiser-Jeep, and American Motors Corporation (AMC) from the mid-1940s through the 1980s. Although neither AMC nor Chrysler (after it purchased AMC in 1987) have claimed that the Wrangler was a direct descendant of the original military model — both the CJ Jeeps and the conceptually consistent Wrangler, with their solid axles and open top, have been called the Jeep model as central to Jeep's brand identity as the rear-engine 911 is to Porsche.

Similar to the Willys MB and the CJ Jeeps before it, all Wrangler models continue to use a separate body and frame, rigid live axles both front and rear, a tapering nose design with flared fenders, a fold-flat windshield and can be driven without doors. Also, with few exceptions, they have part-time four-wheel drive systems, with the choice of high and low gearing, and standard open bodies with removable hard or soft tops. However, the Wrangler series was specifically redesigned to be safer and more comfortable on-road, to attract more daily drivers, by upgrading its suspension, drivetrain, and interior, compared to the CJ line. The suspension on all Wranglers included trackbars and anti-roll bars, and, from the 1997 TJ onwards, front and rear coil springs instead of the previous leaf springs.

From 2004 on, the Wrangler has been complemented with long-wheelbase versions, called Wrangler Unlimited. 2004-2006 models were longer versions with 2 doors. In 2004 only automatic transmission-equipped “Unlimited” versions were sold. In 2005 both an automatic and manual 6-speed (NSG-370) were offered. Since 2007, the long-wheelbase Wranglers were four-door models, offering over 20 in (508 mm) more room. By mid-2017 the four-door models represented three-quarters of all new Wranglers on the market.

STEERING,SUSPENSION,POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-20
  • VIN: 1C4BJWDG2EL
  • Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: When it first started, I would have to be going at minimum 55-60 mph. But it got so bad to the point that I would be going 15-20 mph and out of nowhere my vehicle would start violently shaking and my steering wheel would jerk side to side. The ONLY way to get it to stop would be to completely let off the pedals and let it come to a complete stop by itself. Hitting the brakes could cause it to flip. Having to come to a stop, regardless of the location could cause a serious accident or pile up. Trying to control the steering wheel when this is occurring could cause an accident as well. This is not something that happens here and there. This incident is so frequent that there are websites that try to warn and help others bc it happens so after. Its cost me $4000 trying to fix it. Please look into this and help us resolve this issue before it costs someone their dad or mom or brother or sister, or someone their child or grandchild. Thank you for your time. It is greatly appreciated.

Turned the car on, windshield wipers came up even though they were not turned on, stuck in the up position and stopped. Replaced motor & switch, checked the fuse and wiring, still not working. TIPM in it is bad and needs to be repaired or replaced. This is a known problem in the wranglers from 2008-2017 and causes other safety hazards. They have replaced them in other Chrysler vehicles, but not the wranglers. If this would have happened during a rainstorm or in other situations, this could cause someone to wreck.

My jeep was pouring out oil and the red oil light turned on. I immediately had my jeep towed to the dealer . They had already "fixed" this issue two times previously. It is beyond comprehension that this has not been a manufacturer recall. It is extremely dangerous.

2014 Jeep Wrangler recalls

Upon deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, excessive internal pressure may cause the inflator to explode.
  • Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger's frontal air bag, the inflator could explode with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants potentially resulting in serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger frontal air bag inflator, free of charge. The recall began February 4, 2019. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is V01.

  • Manufacturer: Chrysler (FCA US LLC)
  • Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
  • Summary: Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain model year 2011-2016 Right Hand Drive Jeep Wrangler vehicles manufactured February 16, 2010, to May 2, 2016. The clockspring assembly may become contaminated with dust and cause the air bag circuit to fail.
  • Consequence: Failure of the air bag circuit may prevent the driver's frontal air bag from deploying in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
  • Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the clockspring, wheel back cover, and column shroud, free of charge. The recall began on August 11, 2016. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is S40.

Due to a software error, the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) may fail to learn the locations of the individual sensors while the vehicle is being driven. As a result, the low tire pressure warning light will illuminate, despite the the tire pressures being within specification. Should one of the tires lose air pressure, the driver would not be notified of the change in air pressure. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 138, "Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems."
  • Consequence: If the TPMS light illuminates because the sensors cannot be located, it could mask an actual low tire pressure condition, possibly resulting in tire failure, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Chrysler has notified owners, and dealers will reprogram the TPMS module, free of charge. The recall began on October 23, 2014. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is P63.

Negative 2014 Jeep Wrangler car reviews

  1. Arnoldo Von 2025-01-03

Hey everyone! I just wanted to share my love for Jeeps with you all. I've been a Jeep enthusiast since I was nine years old, when my next door neighbor had a fully restored WWII Willy's. It was such a beautiful and capable vehicle that I knew I had to have one someday. Fast forward to 2012, when I finally bought my first brand new car - a Jeep! I was over the moon with excitement and fell in love with it immediately. The doors could come off, the top could be pulled back, and it could handle any terrain. It truly is the coolest vehicle on the road, don't you think? Unfortunately, my experience with my first Jeep wasn't all sunshine and rainbows. I had some issues with leaks around the doors and a few mechanical problems that were a real headache. But, I'm happy to say that the dealership took it back before my lease was up and I was able to move on. I thought that was just a fluke and decided to give it another go with a 2014 model. I even tricked it out! But, as luck would have it, I had some more issues. It wasn't the best decision on my part, but I still love Jeeps and can't wait to see what the future holds!I had the lift package put on it, rock rails, a wench, KC lights, bush-whacker fenders flairs, 35-inch tires with nice rims, a Gobi Rack, a snorkel package, you name it. Again, this Jeep was going to be perfect! A four-wheeling machine! However, after a short while, the mechanical problems began and have not stopped. Unfortunately, it broke down on me five times in just a month and a half. Two times it needed towing as it shut down completely and I was stuck in the middle of the road! I took it to two different dealerships to see if one was better than the other, but unfortunately, that was not the case. Now, I have a loud chirping/squeaking noise underneath the vehicle that gets louder and louder with every bump in the road. It is incredibly annoying. The dealership tells me it is the lift package, but I have had three separate specialty shops look at it (one that specializes in lift packages on Jeeps) and none of them think that it is the lift package making the noise. They have nothing to gain by telling me this either as they will make no money off of me when they tell me this. The point with all this is - I would advise against buying a Jeep. I want to save you the hassle and frustrations that I have put up with now for nearly 4.5 years!Jeeps are really high on the 'cool factor' scale. They look amazing and there are so many things you can do with them. However, when it comes to reliability, it's a different story. In my almost 24 years of driving, I have owned two Jeeps and unfortunately, they have been the two least reliable vehicles I have ever owned. I had only owned used vehicles prior to this, and one of them was a 1971 VW Super Beetle! I really want to love my Jeep, but I need it to be reliable. I am disappointed that Chrysler has done little to nothing to help. I hope they get their product straight soon. I know I am not the only one who has had these issues. The more people I talk to, the more I find have the same frustrations as me. For those of you who have reliable Jeeps, let me say that I am really happy for you and I hope it stays that way. You are lucky. I am finding, however, that the lucky Jeep owners with few repairs and frustrations are becoming more and more rare. I hope Chrysler fixes things soon.

The vehicle has been a constant disappointment. Despite owning it for five years, it has required frequent visits to the dealership, at least twice a year, if not three times. The ABS and traction lights frequently come on, and the wheel speed sensors often fail, resulting in costly repairs every year. As a result, the vehicle feels increasingly unsafe and unreliable. I have decided to switch to a more reputable brand of vehicle that will not require as much time and money spent on repairs.

My Jeep has been experiencing several issues that need to be addressed. The plastic parts are chalking and turning white, which is unsightly. Additionally, there is a significant amount of drive-train play, causing clunking and knocking that makes it feel like the transmission may fall out of the vehicle. The serpentine belt is also constantly squeaking, which is quite bothersome. Finally, during heavy rainfall, the cowl vent leaks and fills the passenger and driver footwells with water. These issues need to be resolved to ensure the proper functioning of the vehicle.

Jeep has been aware of the leak problems with their T-Tops, yet they continue to put them out without offering customers a choice of a soft top, T-Top, or a one-piece solid top. As a loyal Jeep customer who has purchased four Jeeps with T-Tops, I am disappointed in their lack of quality control and unwillingness to fix the problem. My 2014 Jeep has been in the shop four times for leaks, and it is unacceptable. Jeep needs to take responsibility for their product and provide a solution for their customers.

Despite the initial sticker listing a powertrain warranty, Jeep declined any warranty work due to the fact that the vehicle was purchased used. However, with over 100,000 miles on the odometer, we have since invested in rebuilding most of the front end, the rear differential, replacing the radiator, and other costly repairs. Despite the expenses incurred, I am confident in the reliability of our Jeep Rubicon, which has proven to be a dependable and sturdy vehicle.

I bought this vehicle brand new and it has been a great investment. The only issue I had was a loose exhaust shield, which I happily removed. I make sure to get oil changes every 7-10k miles. I use it for a lot of towing, including a pontoon, jet ski, side by side/atv’s and a large enclosed snowmobile trailer. I also take it off-road and it has held up really well. It has almost 130k miles on it and it still runs, drives, and looks like it did when I first bought it (minus a few buffable scratches). I have never had any issues with it leaving me stranded or making strange noises. The ride is quiet enough (under 85), and the stock upgraded sound system is one of the best I’ve heard. I am planning on integrating a backup camera into the Uconnect soon (for trailers mostly). Overall, this vehicle has exceeded my expectations for reliability and I am very happy with my purchase.

I love my jeep! It's been such a reliable vehicle for me. I'm just looking to upgrade to one with a GPS screen. I recently put in a new radiator and have all the paperwork for it.

Your JKU is noticeably larger than your TJ was. It has a hardtop, so between that and the longer wheelbase, it provides a nicer, quieter ride. You managed to find a manual transmission, which may explain why you have been getting about 25 MPG, way above the 18 or so you were expecting. You mentioned that you dislike the electric window switches being on the dashboard, and you prefer windows that work without the keys. However, the few hand crank window versions you found all had over 100K miles. You will learn to adapt. It is a bit frustrating that it is not possible to disengage the Auto-theft alarm completely. The only way to lock the car without the alarm on is to lock the doors with the manual lever at the door handle. Your Jeep also has an AMFM radio that will not function, which the dealership was unable to fix in a timely manner due to supply chain issues. It was okay for you as you were happy to just use Sirius/XM, but your research seemed to indicate that non-functioning radios are pretty normal for these Jeeps.
