2009 Jeep Wrangler problems
The Jeep Wrangler is a series of compact and mid-size four-wheel drive off-road SUVs manufactured by Jeep since 1986, and currently in its fourth generation. The Wrangler JL, the most recent generation, was unveiled in late 2017 and is produced at Jeep's Toledo Complex.
The Wrangler is a direct progression from the World War II Jeep, through the CJ (Civilian Jeeps) produced by Willys, Kaiser-Jeep, and American Motors Corporation (AMC) from the mid-1940s through the 1980s. Although neither AMC nor Chrysler (after it purchased AMC in 1987) have claimed that the Wrangler was a direct descendant of the original military model — both the CJ Jeeps and the conceptually consistent Wrangler, with their solid axles and open top, have been called the Jeep model as central to Jeep's brand identity as the rear-engine 911 is to Porsche.
Similar to the Willys MB and the CJ Jeeps before it, all Wrangler models continue to use a separate body and frame, rigid live axles both front and rear, a tapering nose design with flared fenders, a fold-flat windshield and can be driven without doors. Also, with few exceptions, they have part-time four-wheel drive systems, with the choice of high and low gearing, and standard open bodies with removable hard or soft tops. However, the Wrangler series was specifically redesigned to be safer and more comfortable on-road, to attract more daily drivers, by upgrading its suspension, drivetrain, and interior, compared to the CJ line. The suspension on all Wranglers included trackbars and anti-roll bars, and, from the 1997 TJ onwards, front and rear coil springs instead of the previous leaf springs.
From 2004 on, the Wrangler has been complemented with long-wheelbase versions, called Wrangler Unlimited. 2004-2006 models were longer versions with 2 doors. In 2004 only automatic transmission-equipped “Unlimited” versions were sold. In 2005 both an automatic and manual 6-speed (NSG-370) were offered. Since 2007, the long-wheelbase Wranglers were four-door models, offering over 20 in (508 mm) more room. By mid-2017 the four-door models represented three-quarters of all new Wranglers on the market.

Common 2009 Jeep Wrangler problems
The Jeep Wrangler 2009 is known for various issues that can lead to extensive and costly repairs. Some of the most common problems include:
- Exhaust Manifold Bolt Failure: The exhaust manifold is constantly expanding and shrinking during a duty cycle, which can cause the mounting stud to fracture and the manifold to become permanently misshapen. This process also stretches the bolts, causing them to fail. An exhaust manifold replacement for the Jeep Wrangler 2009 typically costs between $950 and $1,100.
- Body Damage: Given that the Jeep Wrangler is designed for off-roading, it's not uncommon for older models like the 2009 version to have body damage. However, there are repair panels available for 1987-1995 Wranglers, allowing owners to keep their vehicles in pristine condition.
- Oil Leaks: Despite good maintenance, vehicles as old as the 2009 Jeep Wrangler are prone to oil leaks. Diagnosing the source of the leak can be challenging, as there are multiple systems within the vehicle that can leak oil. Engine oil is amber when new but turns brown or black over time, while power steering fluid can be red, green, brown, or transparent. Transmission fluid is red, and engine coolant can be transparent, red, orange, or green.
- Electrical Problems: The 2009 Jeep Wrangler has faced numerous electrical issues, with the worst category being electrical problems overall. Common electrical problems include head replacements, TIPM failure, and death wobble.
- Sway Bar Lawsuit: A Jeep sway bar lawsuit alleges that the electronic disconnect fails, forcing the owner to drive in dangerous conditions. This issue affects 2007-2017 Wranglers and 2012-2018 Ram 1500 models.
- Death Wobble: This issue is a violent shaking of the vehicle, often occurring between 45-60 MPH when the jeep hits bumps or expansion joints on the highway. It can be caused by worn suspension and steering components, including ball joints, wheel bearings, and anti-roll bar drop links.
- Ball Joint Wear: The ball joint can wear out quickly, especially with lifted suspension. Some owners have reported perishing within 10,000 miles. Regular replacements are recommended to prevent excessive shimmying through the steering, which can affect control.
- Leaking Axle Seals: The differentials on both the front and rear axles can leak oil, which can cause damage to the mechanicals if dirt gets in. Regular inspections are necessary to prevent these leaks from causing further issues.
- Interior Rattles: The Jeep Wrangler is known for interior rattles due to its easily disassembled design for cleaning. These rattles can be caused by loose panels or components that need tightening. Lubricating rubber roof seals with an appropriate product can also help reduce rattles.
- Infotainment Glitches: Infotainment systems in the Jeep Wrangler 2009 can sometimes have glitches that can be resolved by turning the car off and on again. If the issue persists, an update from the dealer may be necessary.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-11-04
- VIN: 1j8fa54169l
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Every time I fill the fuel tank it will overflow quite profusely. Not just a trickle, but more like a quart or more. Not only is this manufactured defect a COSTLY inconvenience, BUT A POSSIBLY DANGEROUS SITUATION. Not to mention stinking like gasoline when I arrive at my destination, which was Sunday church service the last time. Research has shown me there has been recalls for this issue on jeeps very near my vehicle's "birthday". I grew up pumping gas for my parents at the station, but now I have to be sure there is a "splash zone" of at least 5 feet of distance from the filler so innocent bystanders don't get splattered. I have been verbally attacked numerous times at the pump because of this manufacturer defect. Now I know perfection can be unattainable, lots of quirky parts in vehicles today, but i can honestly say this situation alone is keeping me from being an advocate of what i once thought was a great buy. I have replaced the steering damper that created the now legendary death wobble, and personally dealt with evap system part failures. Repairing those issues myself doesn't bother me, but the fuel tank is another story. This is something that should absolutely be addressed. If Im required by the government to pass an e-check so minimal fumes don't enter the atmosphere, then this needs to be replaced/corrected IMMEDIATELY because all these jeeps are dumping fuel on the ground all over the world! Also Ive learned about a mopar replacement filler tube with a check valve built in. I feel this issue should be recognized as a recall, or exposed for the environmental hypocrisy it creates.

- Summary: WHEN FILLING MY 2009 JEEP WRANGLER WITH GAS, THE FUEL OVERFLOWS - OFTEN SO MUCH THAT IT SPILLS ONTO THE GROUND. NO MATTER HOW SLOWLY OR CAUTIOUSLY I PUMP THE FUEL, IT STILL OVERFLOWS. THIS HAS HAPPENED ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS. IT IS MY OPINION THAT THERE IS A MALFUNCTION IN THE VEHICLE. I HAVE RESEARCHED THE MATTER AND FOUND THAT APPARENTLY I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE HAVING THIS ISSUE. I ASK THAT THIS BE DEEMED A RECALL - AND THAT THE COMPANY PAYS TO FIX IT. THIS MALFUNCTION COULD CAUSE A FIRE AND OTHER ISSUES RELATED TO GASOLINE EXPOSURE.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-02-01
- VIN: 1J4FA24149L
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: It has been a common known issue for at least the past year for Chrysler/JEEP to have faulty ABS modules in their vehicles. The ABS control module is a microprocessor that runs diagnostic checks of a vehicle's antilock braking system and processes information from wheel-speed sensors and the hydraulic brake system to determine when to release braking pressure at a wheel that's about to lock up and start skidding. It is probably one of the most important parts of a vehicle to make it safe. My local Jeep dealership said to me today that Chrysler plans to be able to allow them to order this part in February of 2023. I feel this is unacceptable, very unsafe and lives can be lost if the production of this part does not come sooner.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-07-13
- VIN: 1j4ga39119l
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Any time you fuel this vehicle the fuel gushes out of the filler neck. We have tried several different fueling stations . Different times of the day and night. Nothing changes , the fuel still blows out. Sometimes even if you pump slow it will still spew back out. Not every station has the rubber splash guards on their nozzles. The reason this is a danger is very obvious. Gasoline has a low flash point , not to mention the health risk of the vapors. One freak spark unrelated to me fueling could have deadly consequences. I spoke to jeep headquarters about this issue. They refused to give me the lot number for the faulty fuel tanks. The fuel tanks that had issues was on 2008 and earlier jeep Wranglers. Our jeep was manufactured in 2/2009 and from what I have gathered uses the exact same tank as the 2008 and earlier tanks back to a certain year. Is it to far fetched to believe that the tank installed could be faulty , just like the earlier ones. Just so we are clear this has been occuring since we purchased the jeep and continues to. I would like jeep to replace the tank or the valve in the tank. They could install the retro fit repair . I don't feel as an owner we should have the Burden of replacing the tank.

- Summary: Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2008-2012 Jeep Wrangler right-hand drive vehicles manufactured February 1, 2007, through October 10, 2011. The affected vehicles have airbag clockspring assemblies that could experience broken airbag circuits.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating airbag deployment, a broken electrical circuit in the airbag clockspring wiring assembly can lead to non-deployment of the driver-side frontal airbag and will not be able to properly protect the driver, increasing the risk of injuries.
- Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the clockspring and add a steering wheel dust shield, free of charge. The recall began on June 10, 2013. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753. This recall supercedes NHTSA recall 11V-528. Chrysler's recall campaign number is M31.

The tearing may allow the floor liner to shift forward.
- Consequence: If the liner shifts forward it may impede the operation of the accelerator and possibly lead to unintended acceleration, which may increase the risk of a crash.

This is my third Jeep Wrangler. I've owned a '95 and an '00 before, and they were both great fun. However, the '09 4-door model is a Jeep for grownups. The longer wheelbase makes for a much more comfortable ride, and the new ones are much wider too. While I'm not completely sold on the 3.8 V6, so far, it's been good. The most important points to note are: (1) It's a Jeep. (2) Nothing has gone wrong. I've only had to get fluid changes. For experienced Jeep owners, this model is much more civilized than what you're used to. For those new to a Jeep, be warned: it's still a real Jeep, and that means it may not suit everybody.

I've always had a thing for Wranglers. Whenever I visited Hawaii, I made sure to rent one. Recently, I finally convinced my wife to buy one with me. I was pleasantly surprised by the spacious back seat. We managed to save $7500 off the sticker price and got 0% financing for 4 years - a deal I never thought I'd find. I also own an '05 Porsche Carrera, but since getting the Jeep, I've only driven the Porsche once. Although I initially planned on giving the Jeep to my son when he turns 16, we'll see what happens.

I've always wanted a Jeep, but with 3 kids it never happened. However, with the Unlimited 4dr, it's now possible. I got the Rubicon with remote start, dual tops, GPS, and other extras. This thing is awesome! The new Orange color for '09 just seems to glow. I haven't had the top off yet, but I can't wait for Spring weather to lose the hard-top, which is actually very quiet on the road. The longer wheelbase of the Unlimited removed the 'squirreliness' on the highway that the Jeeps of yesteryear seemed to suffer from. Even the 2dr version is much more stable than the pre-2007 Wranglers.

I recently purchased an orange 2009 Sahara 2dr hardtop that is loaded with all the goodies that make driving fun and comfortable. Even at highway speeds, it is very quiet and free of rattles and squeaks. The handling is good and it has a very tight turning radius. Although the ride can be a little choppy at times, the auto trans/eng combo works well, with smooth shifting and adequate power, along with 20 mpg economy. The exterior is awesome! The interior, while somewhat unrefined with a lot of hard plastic, has very comfortable seats. The climate control works well, as does the my gig system. All of the controls are easy to use and the instrument panel is easy to read. I really enjoy driving my Wrangler, it rocks!

Like most reviewers, I was always a very cautious car owner. However, after test driving a Wrangler, I was sold and had one ordered and signed for within the hour. It's such a fun car to drive and handles great. I highly recommend getting the power package and the upgraded sound system, the bass is amazing! There's nothing quite like driving a Wrangler with the top down after a long day at work. It's the perfect way to unwind and enjoy the ride.

I purchased this vehicle brand new in October 2009 and have only driven it 9500 miles in the past year. Recently, I had to take it to the shop for some maintenance work. While there, the mechanics discovered a few issues, including a right front axle leak, front and rear differential leaks, an intake leak, and a steering shaft replacement. Although the Chrysler place had to rebuild my rear end differential, the vehicle still kicks when it goes into first gear. Despite these issues, I still have a fondness for my Jeep, but I believe that the quality of this particular vehicle could be improved.

The Jeep is an impressive vehicle with its ability to tackle any terrain. It boasts great ground clearance, a solid four-wheel-drive system, and ample space for four passengers and their gear. However, I was disappointed by the hard plastic interior and weak engine performance, which detracted from an otherwise enjoyable driving experience.

The Jeep model I owned had some limitations, such as difficulty moving on flat roads with strong winds and a low towing capacity. However, I am confident that the upcoming 2012 Pentastar motor will address these issues. While the interior could use some improvement, the vehicle has a visually appealing design and great convertible options. Ultimately, I decided to sell the car after three months, but I am optimistic about future models.
